The aim of this study was to assess, using the DPPH assay, the antioxidant activity of several substances that could be proposed to immediately revert the problems caused by bleaching procedures. The percentage of antioxidant activity (AA%) of 10% ascorbic acid solution (AAcidS), 10% ascorbic acid gel (AAcidG), 10% sodium ascorbate solution (SodAsS), 10% sodium ascorbate gel (SodAsG), 10% sodium bicarbonate (Bicarb), Neutralize® (NE), Desensibilize® (DES), catalase C-40 at 10 mg/mL (CAT), 10% alcohol solution of alpha-tocopherol (VitE), Listerine® (LIS), 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX), Croton Lechleri (CL), 10 % aqueous solution of Uncaria Tomentosa (UT), artificial saliva (ArtS) and 0.05% sodium fluoride (NaF) was assessed in triplicate by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) free radical assay. All substances exhibited antioxidant activity, except for CL. AAcidS, AAcidG and VitE exhibited the highest AA% (p<0.05). On the contrary, CHX, NE, LIS and NaF showed the lowest AA% (p<0.05). In conclusion, AAcidS, AAcidG, SodAsS, SodAsG and VitE presented the highest antioxidant activity among substances tested in this study. The DPPH assay provides an easy and rapid way to evaluate potential antioxidants.

Background: Free radicals are molecules without any electron pairs, unstable, and highly reactive. Antioxidants are needed to reduce free radicals. Antioxidants provide various benefits in dentistry as a preventive agent for caries, healing, bone formation, mouthwash, preventive and therapeutic cancer, and reduction of periodontal disease progressions. Additionally, research on antioxidants is still undergone due to the existence of free radical residues on bleached teeth. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), ascorbic acid (AA), and sodium ascorbate (SA) are ingridients that have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants can be in two forms solution and gel. Solutions have a higher substance releasing power than gel. Gel is extremely adhesive, so it does not flow easily. Meanwhile, solutions are rather unstable because it flows easily. Antioxidant activities were evaluated with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) Assay method. Purpose: Analyzing through literature reviews the potential antioxidants of EGCG, AA, and SA in solution and gel forms by DPPH Assay. Reviews: There were eight journal articles used in this review. The first article described antioxidant solutions in which EGCG was higher than sodium ascorbate. The second article showed that antioxidant gel EGCG was lower than sodium ascorbate. The third journal explained that ascorbic acid was higher than sodium ascorbate both in solution and gel forms. The other articles provided some information about the antioxidant activity percentages of EGCG, SA, and AA in the forms of gel and solutions by DPPH assay. Conclusion: EGCG has a higher antioxidant activity than SA, but it is lower when compared to AA in both solution and gel forms by DPPH assay.

Background: Among the nanoparticles, selenium nanoparticles (SeNP) are one of the most extensively studied as Selenium has zero oxidation state, non toxic and biologically inert material. This is the reason why Selenium is considered as a major nanoparticulate. In this study SeNPs were extracted from the fruit of Capparis decidua which is a xerophytic small herb. Aim: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the cytotoxic effect and antioxidant capacity of selenium nanoparticles. Materials and Methods: In this study SeNPs were extracted from the fruit of Capparis decidua which is a xerophytic small herb. The cytotoxic effect of SeNPs was evaluated using Brine Shrimp assay and the antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH assay considering ascorbic acid as the standard. Results: From the study of this assay the shrimps introduced  into the well were almost alive in different concentrations and this indicates that there is no cytotoxicity in selenium nanoparticles. The percentage inhibition of Selenium nanoparticles in 10 µl was 15.4 0.1, 20 µl was 38.36 0.15, 30 µl was 45.3 0.1, 40 µl was 59.6 0.15 and 50 µl was 65.6  0.1. It can be inferred that percentage inhibition increases with increase in concentration but it was less when compared to the percentage inhibition of the standard. Conclusion: The selenium nanoparticles extracted from Capparis decidua do not have any cytotoxic effect on shrimps. The SeNPs possessed significant antioxidant activity in increasing concentrations compared to the standard used. Thus SeNPs are biologically useful and can be used as eco-friendly, cost effective and efficient biomedical agents and therapeutics.

In this study, we determined the phytocomponents using GC-MS and evaluated antioxidant activity by a 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay of the methanolic extract of six lotus varieties seed in Viet Nam (N. Nucifera). GC-MS chromatogram of the methanolic extract of six lotus varieties seed in Viet Nam showed 27 peaks which indicate the presence of 27 phytochemical constituents. The major phytochemical constituent is methyl-alpha-dgalactopyranoside (66,86-78,69%) in all lotus varieties. Antioxidant activity of liquid extract and condensed extract was found as 8.20-15.67 mg/mL and 0.850-1.286 mg/mL in comparison with IC50 of ascorbic acid (3.2 μg/mL). Moreover, 50 % of the DPPH scavenging ability of liquid and condensed extract differed from each other. From obtained results, the seeds of six lotus varieties in Viet Nam were found to be potential for bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity.

Abstract Crude caffeine was isolated from kola nut, by treating the filtrate obtained from powdered kola nut with lead (II) acetate to precipitate acids and albumins, along with HCl to precipitate lead ions, and to make some insoluble tannins to be soluble, then Na2CO3 solution was added to neutralise the acidic HCl solution. Dichloromethane is added to the filtrate to extract the caffeine from the aqueous layer and then distilled to obtain the crude caffeine. The extracted crude caffeine is recrystallized with activated charcoal and tested for its antioxidant capacity, using the DPPH assay, which screens the antioxidant activity of plant extracts. The DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) in methanol helps to facilitate the extraction of the antioxidant compounds from the sample. Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) is used as the standard for this assay, due to its appreciable antioxidant activity. The IC50 value was calculated from the graph of % inhibition against concentration, and the extracted caffeine from kola nut was found out to have a high antioxidant activity comparable to that of the standard, ascorbic acid.

Plan: The antioxidant activity studies of the extract of Costus igneus leaves Preface: Costus igneus commonly known as fiery costus or Spiral flag is a species of herbaceous plant. It is claimed to help build up insulin in the human body and is sometimes referred to as insulin plant. Insulin plant Costus igneus (Fam: Zingiberaceae) is a tropical evergreen shrub with large, smooth, dark green leaves. The Costus igneus is valued mainly for its tonic, stimulant, and antiseptic properties. It is said to be aphrodisiac and to be able to prevent the hair from turning grey. Its root is anodyne, antibacterial, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, carminative, stimulant, stomachic, tonic and vermifuge. Methodology: In the present study the antioxidant activity of the leaf extract was studied using four methods viz. DPPH assay, reducing power assay, superoxide radical scavenging assay, and Folin-ciocalteu assay. Outcome: The studies have proved that extract possesses antioxidant activity. In reducing power assay, the plant extract showed 75.43 % increase in reducing power compared to Ascorbic acid which showed 91.94%, at a concentration of 16µg/ml. In DPPH assay, plant extract produced 71.85% DPPH scavenging activity, compared to Ascorbic acid which produced 84.47% at a concentration of 160µg/ml. In superoxide scavenging activity, the plant extract produced 68.19% radical scavenging activity compared to the standard which showed 79.78% at a concentration of 800µg/ml. The IC50 was found to be177 and 367 µg/ ml of the standard and plant extract respectively.

Flavonoid content and antioxidant activity in peel and pulp samples of four different cactus pear fruit varieties were investigated. Major cactus fruit flavonoids were quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin. Greater amount of quercetin was found in the pulp compared with the peel samples in all varieties examined. Both kaempferol and isorhamnetin were found in at least three of the varieties (Opuntia ficus-indica; O. lindheimeri; O. streptacantha) exclusively in the peel samples. Generally, pulp tissue samples of all the cactus fruit varieties contained greater ascorbic acid, glutathione, alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene and antioxidant activities than the peel tissue samples. Total flavonoids correlated well with antioxidant activity (r2 = 0.89). Ascorbic acid had the highest antioxidant activity, followed by glutathione, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol on equimolar basis.

The genus Juniperus L. (Cupressaceae) consists of ca. 67 species and 34 varieties. Juniperus communis L. grows on dry hills or mountainous tracts and is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere. A typical variety J. communis L. var. communis was collected in Deliblatska pescara (Deliblato Sands) and variety J. communis L. var. saxatilis Pall. in Kopaonik Mountain. Needle essential oils were obtained using Clevenger apparatus and analyzed using GC/MS and GC/FID. Antioxidant activity of essential oils was evaluated using DPPH assay. A total of 78 compounds were detected and identified. Both oils are characterized by high abundance of monoterpenes. The main constituents of J. communis var. communis essential oil were sabinene (39.4%), ?-pinene (13.3%), myrcene (4.7%) and terpinen-4-ol (3.7%), while J. communis var. saxatilis essential oil had ?-pinene (34.9%), sabinene (20.3%), ?-3-carene (6.4%) and germacrene B (6.3%) as the most abundant components. DPPH test showed IC50 values 0.66 mg/ml for J. communis var. communis and 0.32 mg/ml for J. communis var. saxatilis. Although antioxidant activity was weaker than used standards (BHT and L-ascorbic acid) it is still significant.

The amounts of anthocyanins, flavonoids, total polyphenol and ascorbic acid in seven apple cultivars from Romania were investigated. The amounts of polyphenol and flavonoids in pulp and skin of apple cultivars ranged between 17.187.52 mg GAE/g DW and 20.1011.06 mg CE/g DW as well as 3.641.18 mg GAE/g DW and 10.315.57 mg CE/g DW, respectively. The highest and smallest values of ascorbic acid both in the skin and the pulp were observed in the cultivars Mutsu and Starkrimson. The anthocyanin content is positively correlated with the colour intensity of the apple epicarp, being about three-fold higher in Prima than Golden Delicious cultivar. The better antioxidant activity provided by the content of polyphenol, ascorbic acid and flavonoids was in apple fruits of Mutsu cultivar and for this reason it should be regarded as a valuable source of antioxidants.

The aim of this study was to determine the phenolic content and antioxidant activity of extracts obtained from herb of Tanacetum vulgare L. (tansy) harvested in two different locations from the western part of Romania. Aqueous extracts of tansy presented high antioxidant activity that ranged between 295.77 and 653.65 mg GAE/L, and remarkable percentage of inhibition (31.82-65.05 %). The compounds quantified in the plant extracts that were determined by UHPLC are: ascorbic acid, riboflavin, pyrocatechol, rutin, quercetin, and kaempferol. Extracts obtained from tansy flowers showed higher content of phenols compared to that obtained from leaves. Similarly, the flower extracts present a high antioxidant activity that could suggest their use as natural additives in food preservation and also in pharmaceutical industry and veterinary medicine.
