Vegetarian is one of dietary pattern that is believed to prevent degenerative diseases, but vegetarian apparently can  lower calcium absorption due to the high intake of oxalic and phytate acid that can reduce bone density. Physical activity can also affect the bone density. Intense physical activity will make bone density stronger. The purpose ofthis study was to analyze the correlation between consumption of calcium food sources and physical activity with bone density of lacto ovo vegetarian at Buddha Tzu Chi Surabaya Foundation. This research was an observational analytic, using cross sectional study design. The sample were 31 adult, taken through the inclusion criteria of alacto ovo vegetarian, a vegetarian diet ≥ 1 year, age ≥ 20 years old. Data collection through measurement of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) using bone densitometry Quantitative Ultrasound (QUS) method, interview of respondent characteristics, consumption of calcium food sources by Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ), and physical activity by International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The data was analyzed using Pearson Test. The results showed that there was a correlation between consumption of calcium food sources (p = 0.000) and physical activity (p = 0.022) with bone density of lacto ovo vegetarian. The higher consumption of calcium food sources and physical activity can increase bone density. Respondents should increase physical activity and doing routine exercise to make bone density stronger, and consume high calcium of foods such as broccoli, pokcoy, orange, and cow’s milk.

Background : Inadequate of vitamin B6, magnesium, zinc, and calcium intake and a lower body mass index can lead to Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) in vegetarian woman. The objective of this study was to determine the association between micronutrients intake, nutritional status and PMS among vegetarian women.Objectives : The objective of this study was to determine the association between micronutrients intake, nutritional status and PMS among vegetarian women.Methods : A cross sectional study was conducted to 44 vegetarians women.Subjects of this study were collected consecutively. Dietary intake were measured by Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ). Score of PMS were measured by Shortened Premenstrual Assessment Form (sPAF).Physical activity were measured by International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Score of stress level were measured by International Physical Activity Questionnaire (PSS-10). Data were analyzed by Chi Square test and ratio prevalence to determine the risk factor.Results : There were 54.55% of subject have a moderate PMS level. There were a correlation between vitamin B6 and PMS (p=0.019;RP=2.96;95%CI=0.9-10), magnesium and PMS (p=0.033;RP=3.8;95%CI=0.6-23), zinc and PMS (p=0.002;RP=6.17;95%CI=0.9-39), physical activity and PMS (p=0.033;RP=3.79;95%CI=0.6-23), stress level and PMS(p=0.045;RP=0.39;95%CI=0.1-1.3). There were no correlation between calcium intake and PMS (p=0.211;RP=1.816;95%;CI=0.569-5.794), BMI and PMS (p=0.355;RP=0.753;95 %; CI=1.443).Conclusion : Intake of vitamin B6, magnesium and zinc, physical activity and stress level were correlated to PMS. Calcium intake and BMI were not correlated to PMS.

The aim of this study was to assess the differences in body dissatisfaction (BD) of male and female adolescents by body max index (BMI) and the quantity, type and organisation of physical activity (PA). To do so, 652 adolescents aged 12–17 years participated in a cross-sectional study. The cognitive-affective component of BD was assessed with the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and the perceptual component with Gardner’s scale for the assessment of, body image (BI). PA was measured with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SF) and the item 1 from the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Adolescents (PAQ-A). The results show that sex and BMI are key variables when determining BD. Moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) was moderately associated with a greater body satisfaction in males but no association was found between BD and the participation and organisation of PA. Moreover, the results suggest that participants in aesthetic/lean PA are at a higher risk of suffering from BD than participants in other PA types. These findings provide useful information for the design of programmes promoting healthy lifestyles, weight control and BI concern during the school period.

Little is known regarding the association between physical fitness and bone health in older Korean men. This study investigated the relationship between estimated cardiorespiratory fitness (eCRF) and bone mineral density (BMD). This cross-sectional study included 2715 Korean men aged 50 years and older selected from those who participated in the 2008–2011 Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination and Survey. eCRF was obtained using a sex-specific algorithm developed on the basis of age, body mass index, resting heart rate, and physical activity and classified into low, middle, and high categories. Femoral neck BMD was assessed by dual X-ray absorptiometry. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for osteopenia, osteoporosis, and low BMD were calculated for eCRF categories in models fully adjusted for age, waist circumference, education, income, smoking, heavy alcohol intake, serum vitamin D, serum parathyroid hormone, and dietary intake of energy, protein, calcium, and vitamins A and C. Overall, eCRF levels were positively associated with BMD and negatively with prevalence of osteopenia, osteoporosis, and low BMD. Logistic regression showed inverse trends in the risks of osteopenia (high vs. low: OR = 0.692; 95% CI, 0.328–0.517; p = 0.049) and low BMD (high vs. low: OR = 0.669; 95% CI, 0.497–0.966; p = 0.029) by eCRF category in models fully adjusted for all the measured covariates. The current findings suggest that maintaining high eCRF via regular physical activity may contribute to attenuation of age-related loss of BMD and decreased risk for low BMD in older Korean men.

This study clarified the prevalence of daytime sleepiness in fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade children and examined the association between physical activity (PA) and daytime sleepiness in children aged 9–12 years. This cross-sectional study included 314 children (mean age ± standard deviation: 10.5 ± 1.0 years; male: 52.9%) enrolled in two public elementary schools in Kobe, Japan. PA was assessed using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children. The outcome was self-reported daytime sleepiness. The prevalence of daytime sleepiness in fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade children were 10.8%, 25.2%, and 28.6%, respectively. In univariate analysis, subjects with reported daytime sleepiness had lower PA levels than those without daytime sleepiness (odds ratio (OR) = .67; 95% confidence interval (CI) = .47–.95). Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that lower PA was significantly associated with daytime sleepiness after adjusting for multiple confounders (OR = .54; 95% CI = .37–.81). The prevalence of daytime sleepiness in fifth and sixth grades was higher than fourth grade. Furthermore, this study clarified the significant association between PA and daytime sleepiness and suggested that PA could be one of the factors to prevent daytime sleepiness in children aged 9–12 years.

This study aimed to analyze the level of physical activity for people with high blood pressure cared for in a health center. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 310 individuals between 18 and 69 years of age through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The majority (80%) of participants presented low or moderate levels of physical activity. The analysis of association between sociodemographic variables and physical activity level revealed that older men from the interior of the state with higher educational levels have a greater chance of exhibiting lower levels of physical activity. The logistic regression model revealed that origin, schooling and diabetes are predictors of low physical activity level. The conclusion is that part of the sample does not match the desirable profile to practice regular physical activity.

Background: Osteoporosis and subsequent fractures increased mortality and disability. Along with this fact, the demand for diagnostic tests has also increased in recent years, which has created a heavy financial burden on the health system. Objectives: The aim of this research was to evaluate the compatibility of the indications of performing the bone density measurement in Arak city with the criteria of the international sociality of clinical densitometry (ISCD). Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed from 2016 to 2017. Patients’ information was extracted from checklists recorded by a bone density measurement expert. Patients who lived in Arak and did not have an underlying condition that reduced the value of the bone mineral densitometry (BMD) test were studied. We collected the information of the patients who had undergone a bone density test at the discretion of their physician. Results: Here, 816 out of 1,354 bone density tests, requested by non-rheumatologists, were abnormal, and 538 were normal. In the abnormal group, 800 (98%) cases had ISCD indications for BMD application, and only 16 (2%) cases had no indication. However, 636 bone density tests were requested by rheumatologists that 474 were abnormal and 162 were normal, and in the abnormal group, 471 (99.4%) had ISCD indications for BMD, and only 3 (0.6%) cases had no indications. Conclusions: In many cases, bone mineral density has been requested based on ISCD indications (85.13%), and bone disorders have been well identified (64.83%). The study also demonstrates that BMD requests are common among different specialized groups, and when rheumatologists request a bone density, the test is highly sensitive (99.37%).

This is a cross-sectional study of probabilistic sample involving 416 men from two cities in southern Brazil. Data collection used a questionnaire divided into six parts: sample characteristics; anthropometric measurements; economic level by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE); International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ short-version); Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System Questionnaire (BRFSS) and Male Aging Symptoms Scale (AMS). The sample was divided into two groups: with and without male aging symptoms, making use of descriptive and inferential statistics. The presence of male aging symptoms was identified in 61.6% of men, especially somatic and psychological symptoms. Most were considered sufficiently active (60.1%), highlighting men without male aging symptoms (p = 0.026), with a possible effect of moderate and total PA on low-intensity symptoms (p = 0.027; p = 0.015). This study identified relationships between PA duration and intensity and intensity of male aging symptoms. PA practice with specific intensity and duration is suggested in order to obtain health benefits related to male aging symptoms.
