Trial research of teak clones was located in Wonogiri, Central Java. This research was conducted in order to evaluate the growth performance of teak clones that can be developed for forest plantation and private forest. Establishment of teak clones test was conducted in 2002 using 20 clones with Randomized Completely Block Design/RCBD consisting of 5 ramets and 5 replications with plant spacing of 2 m x 6 m . The second plot was established in 2005 using 100 clones with RCBD that consisted of 3 ramets and 5 replications with spacing of 2 m x 6 m. The observation and measurement on height and diameter at breast height/dbh were carried out periodically in every year to determine the level of plant growth The results showed that the average growth at the age of 5 years in two test plot clones are height from 8,73 to 9,97 m , tree diameter from 8.61 to 13.14 cm and tree volume estimated 0,046 - 0,103 m3. Estimated heritability clones of tree height and diameter were 0,18; 0,29 in plot 1 and 0,32; 0,38 in plot 2.

<p>The Development of Core Collection for Rice Genetic Resources Tolerant to Drought. The experiment was conducted in dry season, July-September 2009 at the research farm in Jakenan, Central Java and planted in randomized block design (RBD) arrangement by using 150 accessions with the plot size of 5 m x 1 m, with plant spacing 25 cm x 20 cm and three replications. Another experiment used as control and grown as upland rice without drought stresses by watering twice in a week was planted in RBD arrangement with two replications, plot size 5 m x 1 m and spacing 25 cm x 20 cm. The results showed that 26 varieties were selected for sub core collection for drought tolerance. Jatiluhur and B.9645-E-Mr-89 had the highest yield potential respectively 3,88 dan 3,77 t/h. All of the varieties with tolerant to drought were selected for core collection. This would be very important as they could be directly grown by farmers as tolerant varieties or used as sources of gene in the breeding program to improve varieties for drought tolerant with high yielding potential.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstrak</strong></p><p>Pembentukan core collection untuk sumber daya genetik padi toleran kekeringan. Penelitian dilaksanakan pada musim kemarau, Juli-September 2009 di Kebun Penelitian Balai Penelitian Lingkungan Pertanian Jakenan, Jawa Tengah, dengan rancangan acak kelompok, tiga ulangan, menggunakan 150 aksesi yang ditanam pada petak berukuran 5 m x 1 m. Tanaman disiram setiap tiga hari sekali sampai tumbuh baik dan setelah berumur 25 hari tanaman mulai dikeringkan. Sebagai petak pembanding adalah tanaman padi gogo biasa yang disiram setiap dua seminggu sekali sampai panen. Pertanaman pembanding ditanam dengan jarak 25 cm x 20 cm. Dari penelitian ini terpilih 26 varietas toleran kekeringan dengan skor 1-5. Di antara aksesi ini terdapat varietas yang berumur genjah dan sedang (115-135 hari), sehingga waktu panennya agak berbeda. Varietas Jatiluhur dan galur B.9645- E-Mr-89 mempunyai potensi hasil paling tinggi, masingmasing 3,88 dan 3,77 t/ha dan toleran terhadap kekeringan. Aksesi yang toleran terhadap kekeringan terutama yang mempunyai potensi hasil tinggi, dapat langsung digunakan oleh petani atau sebagai sumber gen dalam perakitan varietas unggul toleran kekeringan dan berpotensi hasil tinggi.</p>

Abstract Acacia hybrid is an interspecific hybrid resulting from crossing between Acacia mangium and A. auriculiformis either naturally or artificially. This study aimed to determine the morphological variation of artificial Acacia hybrid, obtained by full-diallel control crossing. Observed sample trees were clones at the clonal test, established in 2011 in Wonogiri, Central Java. Tree samples were taken by selecting clones categorized into the superior, intermediate, and inferior clones based on their growth at one year of age, with three different clones in each category. Parameters to be observed were morphological characters including quantitative (tree height, diameter breast height, bole length, phyllode length and phyllode width) and qualitative (stem form, stem straightness, bark type, bark color, phyllode shape, phyllode apex shape, conspicuousness of the main vein, and petiole color). The data quantitative and qualitative were then scored and analyzed using NCSS series 12 software for cluster analysis. The results showed that morphological characters of Acacia hybrid clones varied across the tree categories. Furthermore, the dendrogram showed that the characters of Acacia hybrid grouped into two clusters: Cluster A dominated by superior and most intermediate clones, and Cluster B dominated by inferior clones. The study result implies the use of morphological characters of Acacia hybrid to select the hybrid vigor in a breeding program.

Summary Cocoa (Theobroma cacao) farmers in Sulawesi, Indonesia typically use subsidised, ammonium-based rice fertilisers that in combination with poor agricultural practices have resulted in soil acidification, loss of organic matter, aluminium toxicity and lower soil fertility. As a result, these soils are only marginally appropriate for replanting cocoa to boost production. A field experiment was performed to test alternative soil amendments for successful replanting of cocoa on these deficient soils. In a trial with a randomised block design, 6-month old seedlings, top-grafted with the local MCC02 clone, were planted under light Gliricidia sepium shade and after 3 months treated quarterly with two options of mineral fertilisers: either a customised fertiliser, consisting of Nitrabor (a combination of calcium nitrate and boron), dolomite, rock phosphate and KCl or a NPK/urea mix used by farmers, each supplied with or without ‘micronutrient’ rock salt, organic fertiliser and beneficial microorganisms or their culture medium, a mixture of chitin and amino acids (a total of 20 treatments). Over a 4-year period, the marginal mean rates of stem diameter increment and flowering score were higher in customised fertiliser than NPK/urea treatments. The average growth rate was highest in the first year and was increased by supplying organic fertiliser. A significant correlation (r = 0.22, p < 0.05) occurred between growth and available P, but concentrations of available P were higher in the NPK/urea plots, which also had lower mean growth rates. Combined supply of organic fertiliser and microbes increased available P, as well as growth rates, in both the customised and NPK/urea treatments. In contrast, NPK/urea-treated plots without these amendments demonstrated very low growth rates. The customised formulation was more effective with or without added organic fertiliser or inoculated microbes. Micronutrient supply stimulated flowering. Growth rates in trees supplied with NPK/urea were also promoted by micronutrients. Leaf flush production occurred in regular cycles and was unaffected by the nutrient amendments. After 3 years, the customised and organic fertiliser application increased soil pH and exchangeable Ca and Mg concentrations, although they remained below recommended levels for cocoa production. These treatments had little impact on soil C content (about 1.3%) which was also deficient. Exchangeable Al and total Zn concentrations were higher in soils amended with NPK/urea. The results of the trial provide evidence that utilisation of organic fertiliser in combination with customised nitrate-based formulations improves cocoa establishment, growth and soil properties and should be recommended as a replacement for the NPK/urea fertilisers traditionally used by farmers.

Kenaf is a multi-purpose crop with numerous industrial uses. Its production is constrained by poor cultural and agronomic practices which reduce yield. Inappropriate spacing among others could result in low yield. Effect of plant spacing on growth and yield of kenaf was investigated in Ibadan, Nigeria. Kenaf seed was sown (2 plants/stand) at three plant spacing: 50×15, 50×20, 50×25 cm was assessed for seed and bast fibre yields using randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replicates. The analysis was done using statistical analysis system (SAS). Plant spacing differed significantly for bast fibre and seed yields. Highest bast fibre yield (0.9±0.03) and seed yield (0.5±0.01) were obtained at 50×20 cm and 50×25 cm spacing, respectively, while the lowest bast fibre yield (0.7±0.01) and seed yield (0.3±0.01) were obtained at 50×15 cm spacing. Spacing of 50 × 15 cm and 50 × 20 cm are appropriate when planting for fibre while 50 × 25cm is appropriate for seed production. Keywords: Kenaf, Spacing, Fibre and Seed yield.

Squash seeds yield and quality can be improved by proper population plant spacing and the pollen quantity, which influences the pollination quality and fertilization. Nine experiments were conducted as a factorial combination of three spacing between plants (0.8 x 0.3, 0.8 x 0.6 and 0.8 x 0.9 m), two quantities of pollen (50% of an anther and another entire one) and natural insect pollination. Seed and fruit production parameters, and seed quality were evaluated. A randomized complete block design, five replications, with ten plants per plot was adopted. Larger plant spacing increased the average number of mature fruits and seed yield per plant. Seed yield was directly proportional to the amount of pollen used during pollination. Higher amounts of pollen resulted in higher seed yield per area, but the plant spacing did not affect this characteristic. Manual pollination, using a whole anther, did not differ from natural pollination in relation to seed yield and quality.

Field experiments were carried out in the Agronomy field of BARI, Joydebpur, RARS, Jamalpur and RARS, Ishurdi during two consecutive kharif seasons of 2012 and 2013 to determine the suitable plant spacing and optimum fertilizer dose for higher yield of mukhikachu. Three levels of spacing viz., 60 cm x 60 cm, 60 cm x 45 cm and 60 cm x 30 cm and three levels of fertilizer dose viz., recommended dose (3000-96-27-81-18 kg ha-1 of CD-N-P-K-S), 25% less than the recommended dose and 25% higher than the recommended dose were used as treatment variables. The experiments were laid out in factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed that the closer spacing (60 cm x 30 cm) in combination with 25% higher than the recommended fertilizer dose gave the maximum edible yield of mukhikachu (two years average) at all locations (20.04 t ha-1, 20.75 t ha-1 and 16.63 t ha-1 at Joydebpur, Jamalpur and Ishurdi, respectively). The wider spacing (60 cm x 60 cm) coupled with 25% less than the recommended fertilizer dose produced the lowest yield (two years average). The maximum benefit- cost ratio (two years average) was obtained from the combination of the recommended fertilizer dose and 60 cm x 30 cm spacing, that were 2.93 at Joydebpur and 3.42 at Ishurdi, while at Jamalpur the maximum benefit-cost ratio (two years average) was found maximum from 60 cm x 30 cm spacing with 25% higher than the recommended fertilizer dose (3.12).Bangladesh J. <p>Forest Management is facing the challenge of implementing the sustainable forest management which includes private forest. Successfully gained the Ecolabel Certificate, some private forest management units in Central Java and Yogyakarta’s districts prove that the small units run by farmers are able to implement the sustainable forest management. The farmers’ success in implementing the sustainable forest management must have been gained through learning process. How the learning process was and what farmers’ learning support institutions influencing of the sustainable private forest management were, were the research questions of this study. The study used explanatory survey method on 200 farmers in Gunung Kidul and Wonogiri. Data collection was conducted from December 2009 to February 2010. The data were analyzed by using descriptive technique and Structural Equations Model (SEM). The conclusions are: (1) there are significant differentiation about farmer’s learning support institutions in Gunung Kidul and Wonogiri. In Gunung Kidul District the institutions are integrated in one team work which legitimated by Bupati (the Head of District); (2) farmers’ learning intensity is low. It was significantly influenced by farmers’ learning support institutions; (3) farmers’ learning intensity can be improved by farmer empowerment activities and competent personnels.</p><p>Keyword: Sustainable private forest management, farmers’ learning process, support system of farmer’s learning institutions, collaboration</p>

<p>ABSTRAK<br />Penelitian mengenai jarak tanam dan pemupukan untuk tanaman<br />rosela merah (Hibiscus sabdariffa var. sabdariffa) belum banyak dilakukan.<br />Suatu penelitian, yang dilakukan di Desa Kanyoran, Kecamatan Semen,<br />Kabupaten Kediri pada tahun 2010, bertujuan untuk mendapatkan jarak<br />tanam dan dosis pupuk NPK majemuk yang tepat bagi pertumbuhan serta<br />produksi kelopak bunga rosela merah dan analisis usaha tani. Perlakuan<br />disusun dalam rancangan acak kelompok faktorial dengan 3 ulangan.<br />Sebagai faktor pertama adalah 3 ukuran jarak tanam yang terdiri atas 1) 80<br />x 50 cm; 2) 100 x 50 cm; dan 3) 120 x 50 cm; dan sebagai faktor kedua<br />adalah 5 dosis pupuk NPK majemuk yang terdiri atas a) 30 kg NPK/ha; b)<br />37,50 kg NPK/ha; c) 45 kg NPK/ha; d) 52,50 kg NPK/ha; dan e) 60 kg<br />NPK/ha. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terjadi interaksi antara jarak<br />tanam (100 x 50 cm) dengan dosis pupuk (45 kg NPK/ha) yang<br />memberikan pertumbuhan tinggi tanaman, jumlah cabang produktif,<br />jumlah buah, bobot kelopak bunga berbiji, bobot biji, bobot basah kelopak<br />bunga tanpa biji, dan bobot kelopak bunga kering maksimal, masing-<br />masing sebesar 186,63 cm; 16,33 cabang; 117,00 buah; 41,33 kg/petak;<br />16,17 kg/petak; 26,67 kg/petak; dan 2,35 kg/petak (652,75 kg/ha). Usaha<br />tani rosela merah memberikan keuntungan sebesar Rp 10.420.000/ha<br />dengan B/C = 1,49. Red roselle farm provided a gain of Rp10,420,000/ha with a<br />B/C of 1.49. An effort to meet the national food need is by utilizing productive forest areas under albizia stands. Food stuff such as peanuts can grow under albizia forest stands. The purpose of this research was to know success of agroforestry system implemented to tree after initial release of contract. This study was conducted under albizia stand of state forest Magetan in East Java. Research design was used in this study was randomized block design. 5- year- old albizia stages with 0%, 25%, 50 % trimming intensity with plant spacing of   3 m x 4 m, Albizia trees that used for this comparison as many as 90 albizia trees. Results showed that soil lies under 5-year-old albizia trees still produced peanut with highest weights 129 g/m and lowest weight 117 g/m2 while highest biomass about 115.10 g and lowest biomass about 98.23 g. Application of agroforestry system under 5-year-old albizia stand is still good and intensive, creating work, improving social welfare, local community opinion change into positive perceptions for forestry development, forest protection, forest fire prevention, reducing rapid forest degradation and environmental quality conservation of forest areas.

<p>Perkembangan varietas-varietas bawang merah di suatu daerah ditentukan oleh keserasian dengan lingkungan, potensi hasil, toleransi terhadap serangan organisme pengganggu tumbuhan (OPT), serta umur dan mutu hasil. Penelitian bertujuan untuk menguji penampilan beberapa klon bawang merah dan hubungannya dengan intensitas serangan OPT penting. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Brebes dan Tegal (Jawa Tengah) dari Bulan Juni sampai dengan September 2011. Perlakuan yang diuji ialah 10 klon bawang merah hasil silangan tahun 2004 dan 2005, serta dua varietas bawang merah sebagai pembanding (Bauji dan Bima Brebes). Rancangan percobaan yang digunakan ialah acak kelompok dan diulang tiga kali. Parameter yang diamati ialah pertumbuhan tanaman (tinggi tanaman, jumlah daun, dan jumlah anakan), hasil panen, dan serangan OPT penting. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa klon no. 2005/1 dapat beradaptasi dengan baik di Brebes dan Tegal, mampu menghasilkan produksi tertinggi masing-masing sebesar 9,95 dan 17,50 t/ha, mempunyai diameter umbi terbesar (1,87 dan 2,41 cm), bentuk umbi bulat, dan berwarna merah tua, sedangkan klon no. 2004/11 mempunyai pertumbuhan dan  produktivitas yang tinggi, relatif toleran terhadap serangan Spodoptera exigua, Alternaria porri, dan Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, diameter umbi (1,67 dan 1,96 cm), bentuk umbi bulat,  dan berwarna merah tua, sedangkan klon no. 2004/10 dan no. 2005/19 sangat rentan terhadap serangan hama S. exigua, penyakit A. porri, dan C. gloeosporioides. Klon-klon yang mempunyai tingkat serangan rendah/toleran terhadap OPT merupakan klon harapan bawang merah toleran/tahan OPT. Namun demikian, penggunaan pestisida sesuai dengan konsep pengendalian hama terpadu (PHT) masih tetap diperlukan terutama apabila serangan OPT tersebut mencapai ambang pengendalian yang ditetapkan.</p><p> </p><p>The development of shallots varieties in one location depends on the genetic adaptability, yield potential,  tolerance to pest and diseases, harvest date, yield and quality. The aim of study was to evaluate 10 clones and two local clones as check, Bima Brebes and Bauji were conducted in Brebes and Tegal (Central Java) from June to September 2011. The trial were laid out in a completely randomized block design and each treatment was replicated three times. The parameters used for evaluating these clones were plant height, no. of sprout,  no. of leaves, yield and pests and diseases incidence. The results showed that considering overall performance, clone no. 2005/1 gave the highest yield (9.95 and 17.50 t/ha), and diameter of bulb (1.87 and 2.41 cm) in Brebes and Tegal respectively, clone no. 2004/11 produced growth and good yield  and showed tolerance to Spodoptera exigua, Alternaria porri, and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, bulb diameter (1.67 and 1.96 cm) with dark red color,  while clone no. 2004/10 and no. 2005/19 were identified as the most susceptible clones to S. exigua, A. porri, and C. gloeosporioides. This suggests that some of shallots clones could be good candidates for the new varieties of shallots. However, the use of pesticides in IPM concept were still needed especially if the incidence of pests and diseases reach the action threshold.</p>
