Abstract: The aim of this study was to find out the incidence of anemia in pregnant women of Swat District; to analyze the iron variations and its dietary effects.Data were collected during the periods of January – September 2016. The study of samples comprised of 250 pregnant women in the different trimester. Blood sample from each woman was collected and full blood count (FBC) was conducted through Mindray BC-3000 plus hem analyzer for all pregnant individuals. Confirmed anemic cases were then examined for IDA with serum ferritin, serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) through Randox kit and serum transferrin saturation was estimated by formula (serum ferritin saturation =serum iron ×100/TIBC). The total number of participants in the first trimester were 50, among them 26 women were suffer from iron deficiency anemia (IDA) with 52% weightage of prevalence rate, (mean Hb concentration 9.602 ± 0.87 g/dl). The rates of IDA were 63.3%; ( mean Hb concentration 8.48 ± 1.24 g/dl) and 54%; ( mean Hb concentration 9.18 ± 1.28 g/dl), among 150 and 50 participants in the second and third trimester, respectively. A significant correlation was found between serum ferritin and Hb, serum ferritin against MCV and serum ferritin against MCH. The high prevalence of anemia was found 78.2% in the age group from 26-30 followed by 78.2% in the age group 36-40 years compared to those of other age groups in the second trimester. In this study the prevalence of IDA in third trimester is lower compared to first and second trimester.

The aim of the study: to study the frequency of anemia in pregnant women with different somatotypes and to develop a model for predicting the risk of this pathology. Materials and methods. 390 women were examined. Of the women studied 110 were mаcrosomatotype, 173 mesosomatotype, and 107 microsomatotype. Somatometry was performed according to R.N. Dorokhov for women in early pregnancy (before 910 weeks of gestation). In blood test the level of hemoglobin, red blood cells, and hematocrit is determined using the Medonic M-series hematological automatic analyzer. Serum iron levels were determined colorimetrically with ferrosine. Serum ferritin levels were determined spectrophotometrically using ELISA methods. Results. It was found that iron deficiency anemia was significantly more common in pregnant women of macro-and microsomatic body type compared to women with mesosomatotypes (p 0.05). Pregnant women with severe anemia were not found. There were iron deficiency anemia of mild and moderate severity, and latent iron deficiency. Hematological parameters (hematocrit, serum iron, serum ferritin) were significantly lower in pregnant women with latent iron deficiency compared to women without anemia (p 0.05). Using multiple regression analysis, we obtained the regression equation (formula), which predicts the development of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women of different somatotypes. Conclusions. The calculations according to the presented formula, allows to predict with high accuracy the prognosis of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women, and also allows to form among patients a high-risk group for the development of this disease in the first trimester of pregnancy when the pregnant woman is registered in the womens consultation, which will contribute to more effective implementation of therapeutic and preventive measures to prevent the development of this pathology.

Aim. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between iron deficiency anemia and small for gestational age (SGA) in early third trimester pregnancies. Methods. A total of 4800 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria were analyzed retrospectively. We included pregnant women who had iron deficiency anemia between 26+0 and 30+0 weeks of gestation and delivered singletons between 37+0 and 41+6 weeks of gestation. Patients were divided into four groups according to anemia level: (1) hemoglobin (Hb) < 7 mg/dl (n = 80), (2) Hb 7–9.9 mg/dl (n = 320), (3) Hb 10–10.9 mg/dl (n = 1300), and (4) Hb > 11 mg/dl (n = 3100, control group). The primary outcome of this study was the presence of SGA. Results. The demographic and obstetric characteristics were similar among all the groups. Maternal age, BMI <30 kg/m2, nulliparity rates, and previous cesarean delivery rates were similar among groups. Ethnicity was significantly different in the severe and moderate anemia groups (<0.001). Mean fetal weight was 2900 ± 80 g in the severe anemia group, 3050 ± 100 g in the moderate anemia group, 3350 ± 310 g in the mild anemia group, and 3400 ± 310 g in the control group. Fetal weight was significantly lower in the severe and moderate anemia groups compared to the mild anemia and control groups (<0.001). The SGA rate was 18.7% in the severe anemia group, 12.1% in the moderate anemia group, 5.3% in the mild anemia group, and 4.9% in the control group. SGA was significantly higher in the severe and moderate anemia groups compared to the mild anemia and control groups (<0.001). Conclusion. The results of this study indicated that early third trimester severe and moderate iron deficiency anemia was associated with SGA. Iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women may lead to low birth weight.

Purpose: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) during pregnancy and infancy is still common in developed countries, especially in low-income groups. We examined the prevalence of anemia and IDA in healthy low-income pregnant women participating in the Early Childhood Initiatives (ECI) program, and in their infants when they reached six months of age. Methods: Pregnant women were recruited by nutritionists. In mothers, hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume, and serum ferritin (SF) were measured at 36 ± 2 weeks of gestation. In infants, Hb, mean corpuscular volume, SF, serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), and transferrin saturation (TS) were measured at six months of age. Thirty-one mother-infant pairs participated. Results: Among the 31 pregnant women participating in the ECI program, six (19.4%) were anemic (Hb <110 g/L) and five (16.1%) suffered from IDA (Hb <110 g/L and SF <10 µg/L). Among infants, seven of 23 (30.4%) were anemic (Hb <110 g/L) and five of 23 (21.7%) suffered from IDA (Hb <110 g/L plus two of the following: TIBC >60 µmol/L, SF <10 µg/L, serum iron <5.3 µmol/L, TS ≤15%). Conclusions: The prevalence of anemia in this group of lowincome pregnant women is comparable to that in privileged women. The prevalence of IDA in infants is comparable to that observed in other high-risk groups. Effective strategies are needed to prevent IDA in vulnerable groups.

Pregnant women are at risk for iron deficiency anemia especially pregnant women in malaria-endemic areas. This study aimed to analyze the profile of iron in the third trimester pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia in co-endemic area of Bengkulu city. This study was cross-sectional study with a total sample of 66 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria. Examination profile of iron in pregnant women is done by taking blood specimen through the vena cubity. Profile iron includes examination sTfR levels, hepcidin, transferrin were examined by ELISA. Determination of iron deficiency anemia is based on the results of Hb, serum iron and TIBC. The results showed 39.4% of pregnant women experience iron deficiency anemia. There is an average difference between hepcidin levels with the incidence of iron deficiency anemia (p-value 0.031). Based on binary logistic regression analysis profile iron with irondeficiency anemia in pregnant women, hepcidin levels are predictors factors on the incidence of iron deficiency anemia (p-value 0.000, 95% CI .296-.709).

Background: The effect of vitamin D replacement on hemoglobin (Hb) concentration in subjects with concurrent deficiencies of vitamin D and iron is not known. Methods: We report on an investigator-initiated, randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled, 12-week interventional trial. Thirty subjects with iron-deficiency anemia (serum ferritin <15 µg/l) were randomized to an intervention arm (cholecalciferol, i.e. vitamin D3, 0.6 million units i.m. once) or placebo. In all subjects, iron deficiency was corrected with parental iron. Other causes of anemia were excluded with appropriate investigation. The primary end point was a rise in Hb concentration. Results: Baseline parameters of age, BMI, hemogram values and levels of serum ferritin, 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were similar in the 2 arms. Twelve weeks after vitamin D replacement, there was a significant increase in 25 (OH)D levels (57.7 ± 20.5 vs. 14.1 ± 6.2 ng/ml, p < 0.0001) and a decrease in PTH levels (32.4 ± 16.4 vs. 52.9 ± 18.4 pg/ml, p = 0.003) in subjects in the intervention arm when compared to the placebo arm. However, the increments in serum ferritin and Hb concentration in the intervention and placebo arm did not differ. Conclusion: Vitamin D replacement in subjects with iron-deficiency anemia after iron correction does not improve Hb concentration further.

Background: Febrile seizure are seizure that occur between the age of 6 month to 60 months with a temperature of 100.4f or higher, that are not the result of central nervous system infection or any metabolic imbalance and that occur in the absence of a history of prior afebrile seizure. Febrile seizures are the commonest cause of seizures in children, occuring in 2-5% of children. The maximum age of febrile convulsion occurrence is 14-18 months, which overlap with the maximum prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia which is 1-2 year old. 7 So far, the dilemma of cause of febrile seizure could not be solved. Standard text book still mention iron deficiency is associated with an increased risk of febrile seizure, thus screening for that problem and treating it appears appropriate.Methods: This case control study was done from June 2015 to December 2016. 60 cases of first episode of simple febrile seizure in age group of 6 month to 5 years were included in the study. A control group was selected from age and sex matched children admitted with febrile illness but without seizure. In all cases detailed clinical history, anthropometry, clinical sign of iron deficiency, CNS examination, CBC, PBF, Red cell indices, serum iron, serum ferritin and serum TIBC level was done. These were analysed in three groups mild, moderate, severe deficiency of anemia. A clinical correlation is tried to establish between overt and subtle iron deficiency with seizure.Results: Majority of subjects with first episode of simple febrile seizure were males (63.3%). Majority of cases of febrile seizure occur in the 6-24 months age group (83.3%). Incidence of anemia among case group subjects was 90.0% whereas the same in control group was 30 %. Mean RDW and TIBC levels in cases were significantly higher as compared to that in controls. MCV, Mean Serum ferritin and Serum Iron levels in cases were significantly lower as compared to that in controls.Conclusions: The findings in present study established an association between iron deficiency anemia and first episode of simple febrile seizures.

     This research aimed at identifying the relationship of iron-deficiency anemia caused by insufficient dietary intake and the iron-deficiency anemia caused by parasitic worms such as hookworms. Whole blood was drawn from 40 specimens; 20 males and 20 females, normal healthy controls with age ranges 8-50 year. Blood samples were collected from 80 patients with symptoms of anemia, with age range from 10-50 year. After fecal examination, they were divided into two groups: Group one, iron-deficiency anemia with non-parasitic; and group two, iron-deficiency anemia with parasitic. Blood samples were divided into two container, one for the hemoglobin, other for serum ferritin and elements of iron, zinc in tubes without anticoagulants. Results demonstrated a significant decrease in the levels of serum iron, serum ferritin, and hemoglobin in male and female patients (in group one without parasitic worms) as compared with control groups. Furthermore (in two groups with and without parasitic worms), a significant decrease in the level of serum zinc in male and female patients as compared with control group. A significant decrease in the levels of serum iron, ferritin and hemoglobin were observed in male and female patients with iron-deficiency anemia caused by parasitic hookworms compared with control group. The worm burden was classified as light, moderate and heavy as estimated by egg counts per gram of faeces, so results showed the median increase with developing of iron deficiency anemia from parasitic hookworms.

Women often do not meet the increased iron and folate needs of pregnancy. Maternal iron-deficiency anemia is associated with poor maternal and infant outcomes, including preterm delivery and low birth weight. Poor folate status increases risk for maternal anemia, spontaneous abortion, and congenital defects. Because of this, supplemental iron and folate are often recommended during pregnancy. There are few data on iron and folate status in pregnant women in Switzerland. We measured iron and folate status in a national sample of Swiss pregnant women, estimated the prevalence of anemia, and determined if supplement use is associated with iron and/or folate status in this group. A 3-stage probability to size cluster sampling method was used to obtain a representative national sample of pregnant women (n = 381) in the second and third trimester. We measured hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, and serum folate and ferritin concentrations. Serum transferrin receptor concentration was determined in anemic subjects. The use of iron and folate supplements was evaluated by questionnaire. Mean hemoglobin (± SD) in the sample was 123 g/L (± 1.0). The prevalence of anemia was 6%. Of the 21 anemic women, 11 were iron-deficient, giving an iron-deficiency anemia prevalence of 3%. Nineteen percent of women had low serum ferritin concentrations (< 12 ug/L) and 4% had low serum folate concentrations (< 2.5 ug/L). Supplements containing iron were taken by 65% of women, and 63% were taking folate-containing supplements. Women in the second and third trimester taking folate-containing supplements had significantly higher serum folate concentrations compared to those not taking a folate supplement (p < 0.001). In the third trimester, women taking iron-containing supplements had significantly higher serum ferritin concentrations compared to those not taking an iron-containing supplement (p < 0.01). Our findings indicate that iron and folate status appears to be adequate in the majority of pregnant women in Switzerland, and that use of iron and folate supplements may have a positive impact on status.
