In time, osteoarthritis (OA) generates the misalignment of the affected joint structures. However, due to the nature of bipedal gait, OA in the lower limb can also cause pathological gait patterns, which can generate instability and falls, with great consequence, especially in the aged population. With goniometry used to evaluate the range of motion of joints (ROM), we wanted to evaluate how gender impacts gait dynamics in OA patients. For this study we have compared 106 OA patients (male=32, female=74) to age matched controls. All participants had their right leg as dominant. Video recording of normal gait was analysed with a digital goniometry tool phone application, and the knee’s ROM was measured in midstance and midswing of the gait. During midstance, significant extension and flexion of the knee excursion have been observed in both males and females. During midswing, knee OA presents more differences, whereas subjects with hip and knee OA present changes on the dominant knee. Midstance changes suggest that the knee’s joint degenerative changes can be linked to hip OA secondary changes. Midswing changes in lower limb OA suggest a connection to the activities of daily life. Gender differences generated by OA must furthermore be studied in both lower limbs so that the best therapeutic approach can be chosen.

Background: Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) is characterized by traction apophysitis of the tibial tuberosity. Few studies on symptomatic and asymptomatic OSD have correlated findings with clinical examination. Purpose: To investigate the relationship between lower limb tightness and practice time among adolescent baseball players with symptomatic OSD. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: The study participants were 402 male baseball players (N = 804 knees) with a mean ± SD age of 10.9 ± 1.5 years (range, 7-14 years). Participant age, height, body weight, body mass index, practice time per week, range of motion of the hip and ankle joints, heel-buttock distance (HBD), and straight-legged raise angle were evaluated. Tibial tuberosity development, as assessed with ultrasonography, was classified into 4 stages: cartilaginous, apophyseal, epiphyseal, and bony. Knees that were classified as apophyseal or epiphyseal were investigated. Participants were divided into 3 groups: non-OSD, asymptomatic OSD, and symptomatic OSD. Results: Of 400 knees in the apophyseal and epiphyseal stages, 23 knees had asymptomatic OSD, and 11 had symptomatic OSD. Players with symptomatic OSD practiced for significantly longer than the non-OSD group ( P = .001) and asymptomatic OSD group ( P = .001). Players with symptomatic OSD also had a larger HBD ( P = .006) and smaller range of motion regarding internal rotation of hip ( P = .023) and dorsiflexion of the ankle ( P = .013) than the non-OSD group. Conclusion: Players with symptomatic OSD had longer practice times than the non-OSD and asymptomatic OSD players. Symptomatic OSD was also associated with tightness of the lower limbs as assessed by the HBD and range of motion in the hip and ankle joints.

Introduction: The technique of neural mobilization promotes ease in carrying out the movement and they  elasticity of the nervous system, creating and perfecting  straining their normal functions, with resulting increase in range of motion . Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of neural mobilization of the brachial plexus on the gain range of motion in the lower limbs in asymptomatic individuals. Method: The evaluation was conducted in three steps , immediate post-neural pre-mobilization and post - late , by testing the 3rd finger  to the ground test and fleximetry. The technique of brachial plexus neural mobilization was applied for ten days, with three weekly sessions to complete ten days (four weeks), performed on alternate days, with a minimum interval of 24 hours between sessions. The sample consisted of 17 sedentary college students, between 18 and30 years, . All statistical analysis was performed with (p<0.05). Results: In assessing the hamstrings and quadriceps with fleximeter there was not a statistically significant gain range of motion after neural mobilization , however, there was a significant increase in overall flexibility evaluated with the test of the 3rd finger soil to reach the left finger. Conclusion: In this study, neural mobilization brachial plexus got no efficacy to gain range of motion of the lower limbs in asymptomatic individuals. However, the overall results showed earned flexibility to reach the left finger.

This study investigated the effectiveness of whole-body vibration (WBV) training incorporated into a conventional physiotherapy (PT) program (WBV-assisted training) in improving blood flow in the lower limbs and range of motion in the lower limb joints of children with myelomeningocele (MMC). A total of 31 children with MMC (7–15 years old) underwent a 6 weeks treatment program consisting of 2 weeks of conventional PT followed by 4 weeks of WBV-assisted training. The assessment comprised two parts: evaluation of lower limb joint range of motion and Doppler ultrasonography of the superficial femoral, popliteal, and anterior tibial arteries and was performed three times for each of the participants (at baseline, after 10 sessions of PT but before WBV-assisted training, and after 20 sessions of WBV-assisted training). Our results showed that WBV-assisted training significantly improved lower limb circulation in patients with MMC, increasing velocity and reducing resistivity in all tested arteries. Moreover, WBV-assisted training alleviated lower-extremity contractures, especially of the knee. Thus, WBV-assisted training is effective as an adjunctive rehabilitation program for improving functional mobility in children with MMC.

There is limited research on the biomechanical assessment of the lower limb joints in relation to dynamic movements that occur at the hip, knee, and ankle joints when performing dorsiflexion (DF) and plantarflexion (PF) among males and females. This study investigated the differences in joint angles (including range of motion (ROM)) and forces (including moments) between the left and right limbs at the ankle, knee, and hip joints during dynamic DF and PF movements in both males and females. Using a general linear model employing multivariate analysis in relation to the joint angle, ROM, force, and moment datasets, the results revealed significant main effects for gender, sidedness, phases, and foot position with respect to joint angles. Weak correlations were observed between measured biomechanical variables. These results provide insightful information for clinicians and biomechanists that relate to lower limb exercise interventions and modelling efficacy standpoints.

Background: Rocker shoes are commonly prescribed to healthy and pathologic populations to decrease stress on the lower limbs. An optimal rocker shoe design must consider both toe and heel rockers. Heel rockers are as effective as toe rockers in relieving foot plantar pressures. However, most studies have focused on the position of toe rockers. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of different heel rocker apex placements on lower-limb kinetics and kinematics. Methods: Eighteen healthy females participated in this study. Three pairs of rocker shoes with rocker apex positions anterior to the medial malleolus (shoe A), at the medial malleolus (shoe B), and posterior to the medial malleolus (shoe C) were fabricated and then compared with a flat shoe (shoe D). Kinetic and kinematic data were collected, and lower-extremity joint ranges of motion and moments were calculated. Results: Ankle range of motion was increased by shoe C (P = .04) during initial contact and by shoe A (P = .02) during single-limb support. Peak knee moment was significantly larger for shoes A and B (P &lt; .05) during single-limb support. Conclusions: Results showed that forward and backward shifting of the heel rocker apex could change the knee moment and ankle joint range of motion in the stance phase of gait. Therefore, placement of the heel rocker in a rocker-bottom shoe can be manipulated to promote the desired lower-limb motion, at least in healthy individuals.

The efficacy of Lokomat on motor recovery in stroke patients is well known. However, few studies have examined Lokomat tools to assess stiffness, joint torque and range of motion (ROM) during the subacute phase of stroke. The purpose of this retrospective observational study is to assess the changes of joint torque, ROM and stiffness that were estimated with Lokomat tools, namely L-FORCE (lower limb-force), L-ROM (lower limb-range of motion)and L-STIFF (lower limb-stiff), for paretic and non-paretic lower limbs in the subacute phase of stroke, assuming that the tools were able to measure these changes. The data come from 10 subjects in the subacute phase who had their first ever-stroke and followed a treatment that included Lokomat. The measurements came from basal assessments (T0) and one-month follow-up (T1). The measures were compared between paretic and non-paretic legs, and between T0 and T1. Significant differences in stiffness, joint torque and ROM were obtained between the paretic and non-paretic limbs at both T0 and T1. A non-significant trend was obtained for reduced stiffness and increased torque and ROM between T0 and T1 of the paretic limbs. The Lokomat tools were able to measure the changes between paretic and non-paretic legs and the small changes between T0 and T1 measurements.

Aims In recent years there has been a significant rise in the popularity of muscle gun devices. However, the current research regarding handheld muscle gun devices is unclear. Therefore, this literature review will explore the current literature regarding the effect of muscle gun device on lower limb range of motion, muscle activation, force output and the possibility of reducing delayed onset muscle soreness. Methods Four databases were used along with two academic search engines to search for studies that satisfied the inclusion criteria. To fulfil the inclusion criteria studies had to be of a pre-post design with a focus on the use of percussion massage devices on lower limbs. Studies exploring range of motion and muscle force output were of particular interest. Results Thirty-nine included studies were used in this literature review. It was found that handheld percussive massage devices are the most effective method of increasing lower limb range of motion compared to foam rolling and other self-myofascial protocols. The use of handheld percussive massage devices directly after exercise reduces delayed onset muscle soreness. However, there was no reported significant increase in muscle activation or force output following the usage of a handheld percussive massage device. Conclusion The use of muscle gun devices is recommended as part of a structured warm-up pre-exercise due to an increase in range of motion, reduction in perceived muscle soreness whilst having no negative impact on muscle activation and force output. Muscle guns may also be implemented as part of a rehabilitation programme post injury due to their ability to increase range of motion and reduce perceived pain and muscle soreness.

Objective Despite the fact that muscle pump activation is known to positively impact chronic lower limb edema, objective measurements of standardized exercises for venous-lymphatic rehab are lacking. The aim of this investigation is to determine the effectiveness of an addressed physical activity exploiting the advantages of an aquatic environment. Material and methods Thirty-two lower limbs of 16 patients affected by bilateral chronic leg swelling were included (12 females, 4 males). All the patients underwent a protocol of five sessions of physical exercises specifically conceived inside a pool. Volumetry, subcutaneous thickness, ankle range of motion and symptomatology were assessed as outcome measures. Results One week after the end of the protocol, the average reduction in lower limb volume was 303.13 ± 69.72 ml ( p = 0.00002) and 334.38 ± 62.50 ml ( p = 0.000003) in the right and left legs, respectively. Ankle range of motion and feeling of heaviness significantly improved. Conclusion A specifically designed aquatic protocol is able to positively impact chronic leg swelling offering a first line rehab for this medical condition.

This study investigated the jumping performance and lower limbs kinematics among boys with Down syndrome. The participants (n = 23) were required to perform standing broad jump test and their jumping performance was evaluated using Motor Skills Inventory for locomotor skills anal- ysis. In addition, the jumping performance was also recorded for lower limb kinematic analysis using 2-Dimensional video recording tools. Results revealed that 91.3% of the participants scored ‘Poor’ values of standing broad jump distances. Based on the Motor Skills Inventory analysis, five participants were grouped as ‘Rudimentary’, nine participants were ‘Functional’ and the other nine participants were ‘Mature’ level of motor development. Based on these three groups, further analysis was conducted on the lower limbs kinematics during jumping performance (three phases: take off, jump peak height and landing). Finding showed that there were no significant differences on lower limb kinematics between the groups during these three phases of jumping. Proper inter- vention strategies are needed in order to improve the jumping skills among children with Down syndrome.

Abstract: This study aimed to reveal an overview of muscle strength and joint flexibility of the upper and lower limbs of the students of SMKN 3 Manado. This was a simple descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. In this study, muscle strength of the right and left hands  was measured by using a grip strength dynamometer and of the limb muscles by using a leg dynamometer. Respondents who met the inclusion criteria were 53 people composed of 22 males and 31 females. The results showed that the upper and lower limb muscle strength were lower than normal, and none were categorized as good muscle strength. Flexibility of lower limb joints generally had a normal range of motion (ROM) value. Conclusion: Most students of SMKN 3 Manado had very low upper and lower limb muscle strength. The evaluation of lower limb joint flexibility showed normal ROM value. Keywords: muscle strength,joints flexibility.     Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran kekuatan otot dan fleksibilitas sendi ekstremitas atas dan bawah pada pelajar SMKN 3 Manado. Penelitian menggunakan model survey deskriptif potong lintang dengan mengukur kekuatan otot ektremitas kiri dan kanan menggunakan alat pengukur khusus pada tangan dan kaki. Responden yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi terdiri dari 53 orang yang terbagi 22 orang pria dan 31 orang perempuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kekuatan otot ekstremitas atas (kekuatan otot genggam tangan kanan dan kiri) dan kekuatan otot ekstremitas bawah (kekuatan otot tungkai) umumnya mempunyai kekuatan otot yang kurang sekali dan tidak ada yang masuk kategori baik Fleksibilitas sendi ekstremitas bawah umumnya mempunyai nilai range of motion (ROM) normal. Simpulan: Sebagian besar siswa/i SMKN 3 Manado mempunyai kekuatan otot ekstremitas atas dan bawah tergolong kategori kurang sekali. Penilaian fleksibilitas sendi-sendi ekstremitas bawah umumnya memperlihatkan ROM yang normal. Kata kunci: kekuatan otot, fleksibilitas sendi.
