Much has been said and written about the role culture plays in the safety performance of organizations across all industries. Understanding that accidents cannot simply be blamed on those directly at fault, this paper explores organizational culture and the part it has played in contributing to the cause of rail and other transportation accidents. This paper also discusses the pivotal role of organization leaders in setting cultural norms and priorities that either bolster or hinder safety. Structure, budget, mission statement, and values, which are established by leaders, all demonstrate the importance of safety to employees and others. At the same time, organizations focused on production run the very real risk of placing safety second. This is a particular concern with transportation providers who may be pressured to focus on performance and schedule adherence, at the cost of safety Recommendations for improvement of organizational culture are provided, with a focus on generally accepted best practices.

The actual problem of production of long products in bars at the current production of mill 370/150 of OJSC «BSW – Management Company of the Holding «BMC» is considered, a brief technological model of obtaining long products in bars is given, an algorithm for determining the optimal cutting of long products is developed. The developed algorithm will help to reduce the cost of production per one ton and increase the competitiveness of the company’s products. The mechanism of formation of rods of non – dimensional length, which in turn significantly affect the consumption coefficient of metal in production, is revealed.

The present-day production and repair of vessels imply saving costs and retaining output quality. One of the cost items is maintenance of processing equipment of manufacturing plants with minimal expense. It can be implemented using up-to-date engineering diagnostics. Suggested tool equipment of vibration diagnostics and vibration adjustment allow not only controlling true technical state of electrical machine, but bring vibration level to target values. The set of methods, including RMS level vibration measuring, narrow-band frequency analysis and spectrum of envelope of vibration, provide insight into complete idea of true technical state of rotor equipment. Vibration adjustment methods, such as alignment, frame flatness setting-out, frame hardening, allow successfully to perform the balancing procedures. The article presents the symptoms of the most widespread defects of rotary converters, which are affected to perform mechanism balancing. Methods of successive elimination of revealed defects are described in detail by the example of converter vibration adjustment. According to the analysis results, application of methods and facilities of vibration diagnostics and vibration adjustment allow to significantly increase repair intervals and, as a consequence, to decrease costs of motor-operated mechanism repair.

In the article, the current problem of reducing the cost of pipe‑rolling products, which is especially acute in the world market of metal products high competition conditions is considered. A significant share in the cost of pipe products stands at the cost of rolling tools. Reducing the cost of buying a deforming tool allows you to make considerable savings in the seamless pipes’ production. The article presents: analysis of the economic efficiency of manufacturing long cylindrical mandrels from a semi‑finished product – forged billet at OJSC «BSW – management company of «BMC» holding»; development of the technological process for the production of long mandrels depending on the required size; the results on the manufacture of long cylindrical mandrels from forged billet at OJSC «BSW – management company of «BMC» holding», as well as their industrial tests in the conditions of the pipe rolling shop. A positive result of using long mandrels of the PQF mill made of forged blanks was obtained.

The article deals with issues related to the use of calcium carbide in steelmaking, instead of secondary aluminum and other deoxidizing materials, in order to reduce the cost of deoxidizing steel and slag.It was assumed that reducing the content of aluminum in the metal of the reinforcing steel grade would improve its spillability, and by improving the spillability, the yield of usable metal would increase. It was also expected that as a result of the use of calcium carbide for deoxidizing the coating slag in the ladle, the degree of contamination of cord steel with non-metallic inclusions would decrease.During the tests, the optimal amount of additive material was determined. In General, as a result of the work carried out, it was found that calcium carbide can be used for deoxidation of slag and metal during extra-furnace steel processingThe methods of adding the material are described in detail. The results of this work are presented.

IBM PC compatible computers are widely used in microscopy for applications ranging from control to image acquisition and analysis. The choice of IBM-PC based systems over competing computer platforms can be based on technical merit alone or on a number of factors relating to economics, availability of peripherals, management dictum, or simple personal preference.IBM-PC got a strong “head start” by first dominating clerical, document processing and financial applications. The use of these computers spilled into the laboratory where the DOS based IBM-PC replaced mini-computers. Compared to minicomputer, the PC provided a more for cost-effective platform for applications in numerical analysis, engineering and design, instrument control, image acquisition and image processing. In addition, the sitewide use of a common PC platform could reduce the cost of training and support services relative to cases where many different computer platforms were used. This could be especially true for the microscopists who must use computers in both the laboratory and the office.

The imaging performance of the light optical lens systems has reached such a degree of perfection that nowadays numerical apertures of about 1 can be utilized. Compared to this state of development the objective lenses of electron microscopes are rather poor allowing at most usable apertures somewhat smaller than 10-2 . This severe shortcoming is due to the unavoidable axial chromatic and spherical aberration of rotationally symmetric electron lenses employed so far in all electron microscopes. The resolution of such electron microscopes can only be improved by increasing the accelerating voltage which shortens the electron wave length. Unfortunately, this procedure is rather ineffective because the achievable gain in resolution is only proportional to λ1/4 for a fixed magnetic field strength determined by the magnetic saturation of the pole pieces. Moreover, increasing the acceleration voltage results in deleterious knock-on processes and in extreme difficulties to stabilize the high voltage. Last not least the cost increase exponentially with voltage.
