Controlled Frac Height Growth Technique to Avoid Contacting Water-Bearing Layer

Abstract Many techniques have been used to model, diagnose and detect fracture dimension and propagation during hydraulic fracturing. Diagnosing fracture dimension growth vs time is of paramount importance to reach the desired geometry to maximize hydrocarbon production potential and prevent contacting undesired fluid zones. The study presented here describes a technique implemented to control vertical fracture growth in a tight sandstone formation being stimulated near a water zone. This gas well was completed vertically as openhole with Multi- Stage Fracturing (MSF). Pre-Fracturing diagnostic tests in combination with high-resolution temperature logs provided evidence of vertical fracture height growth downward toward water zone. Pre-fracturing flowback indicated water presence that was confirmed by lab test. Several actions were taken to mitigate fracture vertical growth during the placement of main treatment. An artificial barrier with proppant was placed in the lower zone of the reservoir before main fracturing execution. The rate and viscosity of fracturing fluids were also adjusted to control the net pressure aiming to enhance fracture length into the reservoir. The redesigned proppant fracturing job was placed into the formation as planned. Production results showed the effectiveness of the artificial lower barrier placed to prevent fracture vertical growth down into the water zone. Noise log consists of Sonic Noise Log (SNL) and High Precision Temperature (HPT) was performed. The log analysis indicated that two major fractures were initiated away from water-bearing zone with minimum water production. Additionally, in- situ minimum stress profile indicated no enough contrast between layers to help confine fracture into the targeted reservoir. Commercial gas production was achieved after applying this stimulation technique while keeping water production rate controlled within the desired range. The approach described in this paper to optimize gas production in tight formation with nearby water contact during hydraulic fracturing treatments has been applied with a significant improvement in well production. This will serve as reference for future intervention under same challenging completion conditions.

The development of gas condensate fields under the conditions of elastic water drive is characterized by uneven movement of the gas-water. Factors of hydrocarbon recovery from producing reservoirs which are characterized by the active water pressure drive on the average make up 50-60%. To increase the efficiency of fields development, which are characterized by an elastic water drive, a study of the effect of different volumes of carbon dioxide injection at the gas-water contact on the activity of the water pressure system and the process of flooding producing wells was carried out. Using a three-dimensional model, the injection of carbon dioxide into wells located at the boundary of gas-water contact with flow rates from 20 to 500 thousand m3/day was investigated. Analyzing the simulation data, it was found that increasing the volume of carbon dioxide injection provides an increase in accumulated gas production and a significant reduction in water production. The main effect of the introduction of this technology is achieved by increasing the rate of carbon dioxide injection to 300 thousand m3/day. The set injection rates allowed us to increase gas production by 67% and reduce water production by 83.9% compared to the corresponding indicators without injection of carbon dioxide. Taking into account above- mentioned, the final decision on the introduction of carbon dioxide injection technology and optimal technological parameters of producing and injection wells operation should be made on the basis of a comprehensive technical and economic analysis using modern methods of the hydrodynamic modeling of reservoir systems.

Water breakthrough and the flow of water towards the perforations of a producing well increase production operation costs and influence overall recovery efficiency. To control water production, a downhole water sink can be used in which a well is completed in both oil and water zones. Water is produced from an interval in water zone, which can result in the same pressure drop below water oil contact (WOC) as the pressure drop created by oil or gas production. This system can reduce water production through oil zone perforations. Water produced from water zone perforations can then be injected in deeper aquifers intervals. This technology can also be implemented in horizontal and multi-lateral wells to further increase hydrocarbon recovery with fewer water problems. This study examines the use of horizontal downhole water sink technology to increase oil recovery. Numerical simulation is performed to optimise oil production and water control in a multi-layered oil reservoir, by optimising the direction of drilling and the downhole water sink method. Different scenarios of drilling direction and horizontal down-hole water sink method are examined to identify the option that provides maximum oil recovery. The simulation results showed that drilling horizontal wells in a north–south direction resulted in higher well productivity, and that wells with significantly more water production problems can be controlled using a horizontal downhole water sink.

The movable water saturation of tight sandstone reservoirs is an important parameter in characterizing water production capacity, and there is a great need to understand the relationship between movable water saturation and water production characteristics. However, movable water behavior in this context remains unclear. In this study, four groups of tight sandstone cores from the Sulige gas field are measured to understand the movable water saturation characteristics. Then, the effects such as reservoir micropore throat, clay mineral and physical properties on movable water saturation are analyzed, and the movable water saturation and water production characteristics are discussed. The results show that higher movable water saturation will result in a greater amount of water in the gas drive. There is a critical pressure difference of the gas drive, and a large amount of movable water will flow out. Movable water saturation is independent of the porosity, permeability and initial water saturation, while it is closely related to the reservoir micropore throat and clay mineral content. Movable water is mainly distributed in the medium and large pores; the larger the proportion of such pores, the higher the degree of movable water saturation. A lower mineral content will lead to higher movable water saturation in tight sandstone gas reservoirs. These results provide clues for identifying gas–water bearing reservoirs and evaluating and predicting the water production characteristics in gas wells in tight sandstone gas reservoirs.

Summary This paper describes the multidisciplinary approach taken to investigate and model complex water influx into a water-driven sandstone reservoir, taking into account vertical water flux from the lower sand as a suspected supplemental source. The Khafji oil field is located offshore in the Arabian Gulf. Two Middle Cretaceous sandstone reservoirs are investigated to understand water movement during production. Both reservoirs are supported by a huge aquifer and had the same original oil-water contact. The reservoirs are separated by a thick and continuous shale so that the upper sand is categorized as edge water drive and the lower sand as bottomwater drive. Water production was observed at the central up structure wells of the upper sand much earlier than expected. This makes the modeling of water influx complicated because it is difficult to explain this phenomenon only by edge water influx. In this study, a technical study was performed to investigate water influx into the upper sand. A comprehensive review of pressure and production history indicated anomalous higher-pressure areas in the upper sand. Moreover, anomalous temperature profiles were observed in some wells in the same area. At the same time, watered zones were trailed through thermal-neutron decay time(TDT) where a thick water column was observed in the central area of the reservoir. In addition, a three-dimensional (3D) seismic survey has been conducted recently, revealing faults passing through the two reservoirs. Therefore, as a result of data review and subsequent investigation, conductive faults from the lower sand were suspected as supplemental fluid conduits. A pressure transient test was then designed and implemented, which suggested possible leakage from the nearby fault. Interference of the two reservoirs and an estimate of supplemental volume of water influx was made by material balance. Finally, an improved full-scale numerical reservoir model was constructed to model complex water movement, which includes suspected supplemental water from the lower sand. Employment of two kinds of water influx—one a conventional edge water and another a supplemental water invasion from the aquifer of the lowers and through conductive faults—achieved a water breakthrough match. Introduction The Khafji oil field is located in the Arabian Gulf about 40 km offshore Al-Khafji as shown by Fig. 1. The length and width of the field are about 20 and 8 km, respectively. The upper sandstone reservoir, the subject of this study, lies at a depth of about 5,000 ft subsea and was discovered in1960. The average thickness of the reservoir is about 190 ft. The reservoir is of Middle Cretaceous geologic age. Underlying the upper sandstone reservoir is another sandstone reservoir at a depth of about 5,400 ft. It has an average gross thickness of about 650 ft and is separated from the upper sand by a thick shale bed of about 200 ft. Both reservoirs had the same original oil-water contact level as shown by the subsurface reservoir profile in Fig. 2. Both sandstone reservoirs are categorized as strong waterdrive that can maintain reservoir pressure well above the bubblepoint. On the other hand, water production cannot be avoided because of an unfavorable water-to-oil mobility ratio of 2 to 4 and high formation permeability in conjunction with a strong waterdrive mechanism. In a typical edge water drive reservoir, water production normally begins from the peripheral wells located near the oil-water contact and water encroaches as oil production proceeds. However, some production wells located in the central up structure area of the upper sand started to produce formation water before the wells located in the flank area near the water level. In 1996, we started an integrated geological and reservoir study to maximize oil recovery, to enhance reservoir management, and to optimize the production scheme for both sandstone reservoirs. This paper describes a part of the integrated study, which focused on the modeling of water movement in the upper sand. The contents of the study described in this paper are outlined as:diagnosis and description of the reservoir by fully utilizing available data, which include comprehensive review of production history, TDT logs, formation temperatures, pressures, and 3D seismic; introduction of fluid conductive faults as a suspected supplemental water source in the central upstructure area; design and implementation of a pressure transient test to investigate communication between the reservoirs and conductivity of faults; running of material balance for the two reservoirs simultaneously to assess their interference; and construction of an improved full-scale reservoir simulation model and precise modeling of complex water movement. Brief Geological Description of the Upper Sand The structure of the upper sand is anticline with the major axis running northeast to southwest. The structure dip is gentle (Fig. 3) at about3° on the northwestern flank and 2° on the southeastern flank. The upper sand is composed mainly of sandstone-dominated sandstone and shale sequences. It is interpreted that the depositional environment is complex, consisting of shoreface and tide-influenced fluvial channels.

Summary Wettability of two types of sandstone cores, Berea (permeability on the order of 600 md), and a reservoir rock (permeability on the order of 10 md), is altered from liquid-wetting to intermediate gas-wetting at a high temperature of 140C. Previous work on wettability alteration to intermediate gas-wetting has been limited to 90C. In this work, chemicals previously used at 90C for wettability alteration are found to be ineffective at 140C. New chemicals are used which alter wettability at high temperatures. The results show that:wettability could be permanently altered from liquid-wetting to intermediate gas-wetting at high reservoir temperatures,wettability alteration has a substantial effect on increasing liquid mobility at reservoir conditions,wettability alteration results in improved gas productivity, andwettability alteration does not have a measurable effect on the absolute permeability of the rock for some chemicals. We also find the reservoir rock, unlike Berea, is not strongly water-wet in the gas/water/rock system. Introduction A sharp reduction in gas well deliverability is often observed in many low-permeability gas-condensate reservoirs even at very high reservoir pressure. The decrease in well deliverability is attributed to condensate accumulation (Hinchman and Barree 1985; Afidick et al. 1994) and water blocking (Engineer 1985; Cimolai et al. 1983). As the pressure drops below the dewpoint, liquid accumulates around the wellbore in high saturations, reducing gas relative permeability (Barnum et al. 1995; El-Banbi et al. 2000); the result is a decrease in the gas production rate. Several techniques have been used to increase gas well deliverability after the initial decline. Hydraulic fracturing is used to increase absolute permeability (Haimson and Fairhurst 1969). Solvent injection is implemented in order to remove the accumulated liquid (Al-Anazi et al. 2005). Gas deliverability often increases after the reduction of the condensate saturation around the wellbore. In a successful methanol treatment in Hatter's Pond field in Alabama (Al-Anazi et al. 2005), after the initial decline in well deliverability by a factor of three to five owing to condensate blocking, gas deliverability increased by a factor of two after the removal of water and condensate liquids from the near-wellbore region. The increased rates were, however, sustained for a period of 4 months only. The approach is not a permanent solution to the problem, because the condensate bank will form again. On the other hand, when hydraulic fracturing is used by injecting aqueous fluids, the cleanup of water accumulation from the formation after fracturing is essential to obtain an increased productivity. Water is removed in two phases: immiscible displacement by gas, followed by vaporization by the expanding gas flow (Mahadevan and Sharma 2003). Because of the low permeability and the wettability characteristics, it may take a long time to perform the cleanup; in some cases, as little as 10 to 15% of the water load could be recovered (Mahadevan and Sharma 2003; Penny et al. 1983). Even when the problem of water blocking is not significant, the accumulation of condensate around the fracture face when the pressure falls below dewpoint pressure could result in a reduction in the gas production rate (Economides et al. 1989; Sognesand 1991; Baig et al. 2005).

Abstract This paper presents the use of real-time microseismic (MS) monitoring to understand hydraulic fracturing of a horizontal well drilled in the minimum stress direction within a high-temperature high-pressure (HTHP) tight sandstone formation. The well achieved a reservoir contact of more than 3,500 ft. Careful planning of the monitoring well and treatment well setup enabled capture of high quality MS events resulting in useful information on the regional maximum horizontal stress and offers an understanding of the fracture geometry with respect to clusters and stage spacing in relation to fracture propagation and growth. The maximum horizontal stress based on MS events was found to be different from the expected value with fracture azimuth off by more than 25 degree among the stages. Transverse fracture propagation was observed with overlapping MS events across stages. Upward fracture height growth was dominant in tighter stages. MS fracture length and height in excess of 500 ft and 100 ft, respectively, were created for most of the stages resulting in stimulated volumes that are high. Bigger fracture jobs yielded longer fracture length and were more confined in height growth. MS events fracture lengths and heights were found to be on average 1.36 and 1.30 times, respectively, to those of pressure-match.

Hydraulic fracturing emerges currently, all over the world, as one of the more strategic techniques used by companies in the oil exploitation sector. This technique is characterized by its high productivity and profit in relation to conventional methods of hydrocarbon exploitation. However, in many countries, as is the case of Brazil, there are several divergences considering the employment of this methodology. Many renowned researchers attest that there are several irreversible environmental impacts generated by the use of this methodology. Among the main environmental impacts are the risk of groundwater level contamination, the risk of surface subsidence, and the risk of the environment contamination with fluids used in the process of the oil and gas extraction.
