Optimist, Pessimist or Engineer - Conductivity Based on Need Not Fashion

Abstract An optimist says the glass is half-full, a pessimist half-empty, whereas a good engineer says that the glass is twice as big as it needs to be. There has been much debate over the years about the relative functionality, application and even necessity of proppant in delivering effective hydraulic fractures. Often these debates have been directly linked to major changes in core frac applications, more recently in the dominant North American onshore unconventional market. However, the debates have all too often used broad or unclear brush strokes to describe shifting fracture requirements. Meanwhile, the developing oilfield in the rest of the world resides in more permeable areas of the resource triangle, great care must be taken to ensure that conventional lessons hard learned are not lost, but also that unconventional understanding develops. Over recent years there have been many debates and publications on the relative value of the use of proppant (and associated conductivity), although the true question was about appropriate fracture design in different rock/matrix qualities and environments. Certainly, the vast majority of fracturing engineers appreciate the difference between continuous proppant-pack conductivity and other techniques, such as infinite conductivity, pillar fracturing or duning designs. However, there is increasing evidence that conventional fracturing is suffering from populist attitudes, leading to ineffective fracturing. Additionally, and just as impactful, that unconventional fracturing continues to rely on the lessons learned and physics derived directly from our conventional experience but applying this in an entirely different environment. Primarily, the main concern is with the transfer of recent lessons learned and techniques utilised in one rock quality and environment, to an entirely different scenario, resulting in the misapplication, reduced IP30, poorer NPV or reduced long term EUR and IRR. Examples will be referenced where appropriate proppant selection and frac design can be the difference between success and failure. Fundamentally, we have not sufficiently developed our understanding of the role of proppant and conductivity, for application in unconventionals and thereby rely far too much on our previous conventional thinking. While at the same time we are exporting often inappropriate unconventional populist practice into very conventional environments, thereby potentially achieving the abhorrence of the worst of both worlds. This paper will describe and address scenarios where appropriate engineering selection, rather than popularity-based decision making, has resulted in a successful outcome. It will also attempt to ensure that we show the importance of studying your rock, in anticipation of engineering design, and that this should be a key consideration. The paper will also suggest that as an industry we urgently need to address our approach to consideration of conductivity, placement and importance and ensure that unconventional knowledge and learning progresses with a beneficial outcome for all.

Students in higher education bring with them a difference of linguistic abilities that is often due to the difference in socioeconomic status and early schooling. The lack of linguistic capacity hampers academic pace and introduces discrepancies in performance of learners. This paper examines the persistence of socioeconomic differences being translated in educational institutes and their influence on language outcomes and it investigates the role of effective intervention through an action research model by Zuber-Skerritt (1992) called CRASP. It is an experimental study based on a sample of 300 engineering students which examines initial and final evaluation of language proficiency through intervention. The tools used to gather data include demographics, language test of writing and speaking skills and sequential assessment. The results showed that intervention is helpful for enhancing language proficiency nonetheless; the improvement rate is nearly negligible and requires a long-term plan to impact early disadvantage of exposure.

Background: Complications of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) include coagulopathy. We performed a meta-analysis on the association of COVID-19 severity with changes in hemostatic parameters. Methods: Data on prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), D-Dimer, platelets (PLT), or fibrinogen in severe versus mild COVID-19 patients, and/or in non-survivors to COVID-19 versus survivors were systematically searched. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated. Results: Sixty studies comparing 5487 subjects with severe and 9670 subjects with mild COVID-19 documented higher PT (SMD: 0.41; 95%CI: 0.21, 0.60), D-Dimer (SMD: 0.67; 95%CI: 0.52, 0.82), and fibrinogen values (SMD: 1.84; 95%CI: 1.21, 2.47), with lower PLT count (SMD: −0.74; 95%CI: −1.01, −0.47) among severe patients. Twenty-five studies on 1511 COVID-19 non-survivors and 6287 survivors showed higher PT (SMD: 0.67; 95%CI: 0.39, 0.96) and D-Dimer values (SMD: 3.88; 95%CI: 2.70, 5.07), with lower PLT count (SMD: −0.60, 95%CI: −0.82, −0.38) among non-survivors. Regression models showed that C-reactive protein values were directly correlated with the difference in PT and fibrinogen. Conclusions: Significant hemostatic changes are associated with COVID-19 severity. Considering the risk of fatal complications with residual chronic disability and poor long-term outcomes, further studies should investigate the prognostic role of hemostatic parameters in COVID-19 patients.

Purpose. To evaluate the role of ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in predicting the long-term outcome of sub-Tenon needling revision of failed trabeculectomy blebs. Methods. Adult patients with a failed trabeculectomy bleb and unsatisfactory intraocular pressure (IOP) control were recruited. The aqueous flow under the partial thickness scleral flap was looked for and the blebs classified on UBM as scleral route patent (SRP) or scleral route occluded (SRO). All blebs underwent needling revision with injection of 5 mg/0.1 mL 5-fluorouracil. Survival of the revision procedure at the end of 2 years follow-up with regards to the baseline UBM characterization of the bleb was noted. Successful outcome was defined as IOP <22.0 mmHg and/or 30% reduction of baseline IOP with or without medication. Results. A total of 13 eyes had SRP and 5 eyes had SRO blebs on UBM. Only SRP blebs survived the needling procedure by the end of 2 years. Of the 13 SRP blebs, 10 blebs survived (76.9%). Needling had failed in all 5 SRO blebs. The overall success rate was 55.6 % at 2 years. There was no difference in age, IOP, and time from initial trabeculectomy between the failed and successful group. The outcome correlated significantly to the patency of the scleral route assessed by UBM (p=0.07). Conclusions. Ultrasound biomicroscopy characterization of failed blebs appears to help in predicting the outcome of needle revision. In SRO blebs, it may be better to plan a full bleb revision rather than needling alone. Ultrasound biomicroscopy may help in avoiding an unnecessary needling procedure in SRO blebs where it is likely to fail.

Inclusion of a persistence trait into the DairyNZ Forage Value Index (FVI) is an important step toward developing a holistic assessment of the relative value to dairy farm businesses of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) cultivars. For the purposes of the FVI, ‘persistence’ was defined as the persistence over time of yield differences between diploid and tetraploid functional groups, and implemented (as an interim step) via two measures: a mean persistence scaling factor (μPS) and a relative pasture renewal cost (RRC). The values of μPS and RRC were estimated by analysing four long-term dry matter (DM) production data sets from across New Zealand, then applied to all cultivars in the 2019 FVI lists. Incorporating persistence reduced the difference in overall FVI value between tetraploids and diploids between $117 and $202/ha (depending on diploid heading date, and region), partially re-balancing the sharp rise in tetraploid values and rankings resulting from incorporation of the metabolisable energy (ME) content trait. Implementing persistence in the FVI at the ploidy level is the first step toward inclusion of cultivar-specific persistence information. This next step will require persistence data for cultivars, plus more information on processes and criteria used by farmers when they decide to renew pastures.

The singularity of human resources and the complex interests in the world of work are a constant challenge for business executives and HR colleagues. While the difference between the performance of a motivated and an unmotivated employee can be up to twice as much at almost the same cost level, the motivation strategy is typically either absent from the business life, or operates on a reactive concept based on an unconscious design. Although the mere presence of motivation and its various levels are less quantifiable in exact terms with direct tools, a performance which is much weaker than possible is measurable in the short and long term, and its negative economic results are clear. The aim of the research is to examine the motivational practices of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in the Southern Transdanubian Region. Involving 300 businesses we evaluated the applied wage system, the role of money among the motivational tools, the extent and causes of fluctuation, the system of employee training, the way of performance evaluation, the reasons for underperformance, the importance of motivation, the company motivation strategy and the efforts to retain the key people. The employee motivation can be increase in several forms, but the priority of needs and claims is constantly changing. Updating this motivational matrix is a real leadership challenge, but this effort can pay off multiple times. According to the results it can be stated that the motivation strategy – as a key economic issue – is not given sufficient attention in business practices.

Long-term studies (2014–2019) of the population dynamics of the fungus Rhizoctonia solani Küch. were carried out in the soil on the Purple Majesty, Vitelotte and Fioletovy potato varieties and preceding crops (potatoes, oats and tendergreen). The study was carried out in Novosibirsk region in the soil and climatic conditions typical of the forest-steppe zone of Western Siberia. To study the peculiarities of R. solani fungus population dynamics in potato plantations, soil samples were taken from under the plants during the entire growing season. The accumulation of rhizoctonia propagules in the soil was determined using the method of multiple soil pellets. The difference in the amount and rate of accumulation of the fungus R. solani on different varieties, as well as the influence of previous crops on this process, was established. Two peaks of the fungus accumulation were observed on the Purple Majesty variety: the first (48.7 propagules/100 g of soil) – during the full germination period, the second (57.2 propagules/100 g of soil) – at the end of the crop maturation phase. One peak was observed in the population dynamics of the fungus on Vitelotte and Fioletovy varieties, at the end of the ripening period (59.0 and 49.1 propagules/100 g soil, respectively). The smallest amount of R. solani fungus in the soil on average during the growing season was noted on the Fioletovy variety – 33.3 propagules/100 g of soil. In the Purple Majesty and Vitelotte varieties, this figure was 41.5 and 40.4 propagules/100 g of soil, respectively. When potato variety Agata was cultivated as monoculture, there was a rapid and significant accumulation of the fungus R. solani in the soil (from 34.6 to 126.8 propagules/100 g of soil). When this variety was cultivated following tendergreen or oats, the amount of the pathogen varied to a lesser extent (25.1–52.2 and 19.8–41.0 propagules/100 g of soil, respectively). No sharp increases in the number of propagative structures of the phytopathogen in the soil were noted.

Abstract This article is a retrospective overview of work performed in the domain of Active Assisted Living over a span of almost 18 years. The authors have been creating and refining artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics solutions to support older adults in maintaining their independence and improving their quality of life. The goal of this article is to identify strong features and general lessons learned from those experiences and conceive guidelines and new research directions for future deployment, also relying on an analysis of similar research efforts. The work considers key points that have contributed to increase the success of the innovative solutions grounding them on known technology acceptance models. The analysis is presented with a threefold perspective: A Technological vision illustrates the characteristics of the support systems to operate in a real environment with continuity, robustness, and safety; a Socio-Health perspective highlights the role of experts in the socio-assistance domain to provide contextualized and personalized help based on actual people’s needs; finally, a Human dimension takes into account the personal aspects that influence the interaction with technology in the long term experience. The article promotes the crucial role of AI and robotics in ensuring intelligent and situated assistive behaviours. Finally, considering that the produced solutions are socio-technical systems, the article suggests a transdisciplinary approach in which different relevant disciplines merge together to have a complete, coordinated, and more informed vision of the problem.

The article presents the results of long-term field studies of methane in the upper part of permafrost for the different geomorphological levels of Central Yakutia. Patterns of spatial distribution of methane content across different landscapes were found. The highest concentrations of methane are found in alas deposits, the major role of methane in the conservation there goes to the moment of freezing the thermokarst lake draining. The difference in methane content in the sediments of the Late Pleistocene Ice Complex on the left and the right bank of the river Lena was identified. That is likely caused by the conditions of ice complex formation.

In the context of static conservation reserves, dynamic fluvial processes and patterns of river channel and floodplain change are problematic for environmental management. Floodplain wetlands that evolve by erosion and sedimentation experience changes in the location and extent of channels and wetlands regardless of conservation reserve boundaries. We describe historical channel and floodplain change in an Australian wetland of international ecological significance, the southern Macquarie Marshes, and synthesise the role of avulsion in wetlands that move laterally on the broader floodplain. Avulsion has shifted the foci of flooding and areas of aquatic habitat in the system over the last century. By ~1925, active wetlands surrounding the Old Macquarie River and the original conservation area contracted around Monkeygar Creek within the present nature reserve, and the boundary of this reserve has changed little since the 1940s. Ecological changes associated with continued wetland desiccation in the reserve triggered a recent Ramsar Article 3.2 notification for the Macquarie Marshes, prompting management responses from government agencies. Fluvial morphodynamics and their impacts on wetland ecology should be specifically recognised and integrated with adaptive management plans to combine new findings with lessons learned from previous intervention strategies for the long-term ecological sustainability of floodplain wetlands.

Often, public reports of accidents only identify the last, obvious failure or immediate cause of the accident. If human error is the immediate cause or final failure, further assessment of accident contributors may stop, and an enhanced training program is often determined to be the primary solution for preventing further accidents of this type. However, in many cases, the accident is the final result of many inputs, decisions, actions and inactions. To demonstrate this characteristic of accidents, the 20 stories in a publication titled “Set Phasers on Stun” have been categorized into action errors and planning errors that involve designers, mechanics, or operators. For each story, the hazard and the number of simultaneous failures are listed. Then two of the 20 stories are assessed in detail; one story involves an action error and the other one involves a planning error. In each of these two stories, the system is first described as it should operate and then its risk is quantitatively assessed to identify findings, lessons learned, recommendations, analogies to the other 18 stories, and applications. This paper has three immediate goals. One, to recognize the difference between an action error and a planning error. Two, to recognize that most accidents involve 2 to 4 simultaneous failures. Three, to appreciate that quantifying the failure frequency serves two benefits. Because it is usually difficult to find out exactly what happened after an accident, the calculated frequency can help confirm what actually happened. When various alternatives are recommended, it can also help to select the most economic ones. This paper has two long term goals. One, consider assessing the failure rates of near misses. By reducing near misses, larger accidents will be reduced. Two, consider assessing the failure rates of personal near misses because you know what actually happened.
