Abstract Silo-cave is a unique human habitation form on the Loess Plateau in northern China, which consists of an excavated 6–7 m deep pit as the courtyard and cave dwellings in the surrounding four walls. This architecture has had a history of more than 7000 years, and yet such "living fossils for the history of dwellings" are now facing great crises and challenges during rapid social and economic development. In this paper, remote sensing and GIS techniques are used to comprehensively and systematically investigate the spatial distributions and morphological characteristics of silo-caves at both the macro and micro scales. The research shows that silo-cave villages are mainly distributed in economically underdeveloped areas, such as West Henan (Yuxi), South Shanxi (Jinnan), Central Shaanxi (Guanzhong), and East Gansu (Longdong). The morphological evolution patterns of typical silo-cave villages are identified, including: (1) retaining the periphery and rebuilding the interior, (2) retaining the interior and expanding the periphery, and (3) expanding both the interior and periphery. These patterns are demonstrated to be influenced by many factors, including landforms, traffic conditions, economic development, population growth, and administrative division adjustment. Sustainable development of these traditional silo-cave villages relies on administrative policy and planning, people’s awareness of cultural heritage protection, culture inheritance, industrial transformation, and public services.

The aim of the article is to illuminate the modern paradigm of the globalization economic environment, which shows the gradual end of the decade of “crisis-free” growth of the world economy and, accordingly, the nearing to the next global economic crisis; to cover the importance of attracting investment and implementing a specific national industrial policy as one of the key factors of development; to outline the problems of prevention, forecasting and analysis of risks arising in the investment sphere in the context of providing conditions for sustainable development of the Ukrainian economy. The subject of the study is: the monitoring of investment sector indicators that determine the potential of economic development and provide an analytical assessment of the risks posed in the investment sphere in the context of ensuring the conditions of sustainable development of the Ukrainian economy. Methodology. The article uses the complex approach with the application of methods of simulation and econometric modeling for analytical estimation of gross fixed capital formation as a key investment indicator in the current economic conditions of Ukraine. Results. The conducted study clearly demonstrates not only the presence but also the obvious deepening of the imbalance between the current state of attracting foreign investments and actual needs in technological and physical renewal of the production sphere. The consequence is a real threat of loss of potential for economic development. Some measures have been identified to improve the investment climate, and the key ones are the provision of state support for reforming the Ukrainian economy in terms of improving the investment climate and stimulating the innovative potential of entrepreneurial activity. The practical implications of this study are to identify the lack of innovation strategy, which deepens Ukraine’s technological backwardness compared to developed countries in general, and the EU countries, in particular, and keeps the inefficient and destructive natural-production base of Ukrainian economy. Value/originality. Waqf is a Sadaqah Jariyyah, a Capital Gift to Allah which is useful for Sustainable development and beneficial to Muslim, Poor, Marginalised, and disadvantaged communities. The important thing is waqf properties must be used for the benefit of needy. It can be achieved through investing the waqf in infrastructure development through the generation of profits from waqf infrastructure and utilization of Waqf property by common and needy public. The proper management of waqf properties through modern techniques of risk and asset management so that maximum benefits can be achieved through any Waqf property is the need of time. The history of Waqf is very old in Madhya Pradesh and this research is undertaken to study the methods used to commercially develop Waqf lands which are regulated by waqf board of MP located in the state of MP. The researcher is trying to find out the potential of economic development through waqf properties in MP and the welfare which can be achieved of poor and marginalized classes in this chapter.

Loess deposition within the Loess Plateau of China records the history of environmental change over the last 2.5 Myr. Loess-paleosol sequences of the last 10 ka, which have preserved information of global climate change, relate closely to human occupation of the area. Hence, studies of the deposition and development of Holocene loess are significant for studying environmental change and problems associated with engineering geology. We present here stratigraphic relations among four profiles from the south, west and center of the Loess Plateau. On the basis of 14C radiometric and AMS dates of organic material extracted from the paleosols, together with magnetic susceptibility measurements down each profile, we discuss Holocene stratigraphic divisions within the Loess Plateau, and suggest that the Holocene optimum, characterized by paleosol complexes, occurred between 10 and 5 ka bp. From 5 ka BP to the present, neoglacial activity is characterized by recently deposited loess.

There are few precipitation events in the Loess Platea area, which may significantly influence water uptake strategies for plant communities, while water source for trees, growing in the Loess Plateau mountain area, are poorly comprehend. We investigated the impacts of precipitation (before and after) on water uptake strategies for typical broadleaf and coniferous trees using hydrogen and oxygen stable isotope techniques in the Loess Plateau mountain area of northern China. Our results indicated that water sources of the two plant species varied before and after rainfall. Robinia pseudoacacia largely absorbed water from 30-40cm (57.8%) soil layers before precipitation and switched its main water source to 20-30cm (58.5%) soil layer after precipitation. Contrary to R.pseudoacacia, Pinus tabuliformis mainly absorbed water from 20-30cm (24.9%) and 10-20cm (21.6%) soil layers before precipitation and changed its dominant water sources to 0-10cm (39.8%) and 10-20cm (44%) soil layer after precipitation. Moreover, the herbaceous of broadleaf plant has the higher complex of the community. On the whole, R.pseudoacacia and P.tabuliformis showed the diverse characteristics of water utilization, which suggests that these two species are suitable for a mixed forest vegetation and our findings provide valuable information for planning long-term ecological afforestation management around the Loess Plateau mountain area of northern China.

Abstract In the Loess Plateau, natural resources are scarce and the ecological environment is fragile. Sustainable development requires special attention paid to resource and environmental carrying capacity (RECC). This paper selects 24 representative cities in five natural areas of the Loess Plateau, uses the entropy-weight-based TOPSIS method to evaluate and analyze the RECC of each city and region from 2013 to 2018, establishes a diagnosis model to identify the obstacle factors restricting the improvement of RECC and constructs the theoretical framework of RECC' system mechanism. Results show that the RECC of Loess Plateau is increasing in general but relatively small. The environmental and social subsystem have the highest and lowest carrying capacity respectively. There is an obvious contradiction between economic development and the environment. Population density, investment in technological innovation, per capita sown area of crops, and per capita water resources are the main obstacles affecting the improvement of RECC in the Loess Plateau. Such evaluation and diagnosis could support ecological civilization and sustainable development.

The ecological degradation caused by unreasonable development and prolonged utilization threatens economic development. In response to the development crisis triggered by ecological degradation, the Chinese government launched the National Barrier Zone (NBZ) Construction Program in 2006. However, few in-depth studies on the Loess Plateau Ecological Screen (LPES) have been conducted since the implementation of that program. To address this omission, based on the remote sensing image as the primary data, combined with meteorological, soil, hydrological, social, and economic data, and using GIS spatial analysis technology, this paper analyzes the change characteristics of the ecosystem pattern, quality, and dominant services of the ecosystem in the LPES from 2005 to 2015. The results show that from 2005 to 2015, the ecosystem structure in the study area was relatively stable, and the area of each ecosystem fluctuated slightly. However, the evaluation results based on FVC, LAI, and NPP showed that the quality of the ecosystem improved. The vegetation coverage (FVC) increased significantly at a rate of 0.91% per year, and the net primary productivity (NPP) had increased significantly at a rate of 6.94 gC/(m2∙a) per year. The leaf area index (LAI) in more than 66% of the regions improved, but there were still about 8% of the local regions that were degraded. During these 10 years, the soil erosion situation in LPES improved overall, and the amount of soil conservation (ASC) of the ecosystem in the LPES increased by about 0.18 billion tons. Grassland and forest played important roles in soil conservation in this area. Pearson correlation analysis and redundancy analysis showed that the soil conservation services (SCS) in the LPES were mainly affected by climate change, economic development, and urban construction. The precipitation (P), total solar radiation (SOL), and temperature (T) can explain 52%, 30.1%, and 17% of the change trends of SCS, respectively. Construction land and primary industry were negatively correlated with SCS, accounting for 22% and 8% of the change trends, respectively. Overall, from 2005 to 2015, the ecological environment of LPES showed a gradual improvement trend, but the phenomenon of destroying grass and forests and reclaiming wasteland still existed.
