Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the knowledge and practices of dentists regarding breastfeeding as a strategy for promoting children's oral health. It also aimed to investigate how nursing mothers perceive the participation of dentists in actions to promote and support breastfeeding. Methods: this study employed a mixed methodological approach. During the quantitative phase, 91 dentists of the Family Health Strategy answered an electronic questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. For the qualitative investigation, were interviewed 21 nursing mothers. These interviews were examined through content analysis, and the results were interpreted from the perspective of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Results: Among dentists, 81.3% agreed that they are aware of the implications of breastfeeding for the child's oral health and reported 72.8% advising mothers and pregnant women about its benefits. Ambivalent social norms and weaknesses related to actions promoting and supporting breastfeeding emerged in the speeches of nursing mothers, and unfamiliarity about the benefits of this practice for children's oral health. Conclusions: Dentists recognize the benefits of breastfeeding for children's oral health. On the other hand, the nursing mothers pointed out barriers, exposed weaknesses, and signaled necessary conjunction of efforts to improve maternal and child care quality.

Introduction One of the main problems of the public health services, in which the family oral health team is included, is access by users to dental treatment in primary care, with particular reference to caries disease. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between family risk, for prioritization of home visits and oral health conditions, with a view to providing evidence about the first indicator for organizing the demand for oral health in the Family Health Strategy (FHS). Method The application of family health is based on Form A of the primary care information database SIAB ("Sistema de Informação de Atenção Básica"), used for registering families with the FHS. Eleven dentists examined the oral health conditions of 1165 persons (608 from 12 to 19 years; and 557 from 35 to 44 years of age), classifying them into six codes from A to F. Multinomial logistic regression was used (α=0.05) to analyze the association between family risk variables and oral health situation. Result There was significant association between family risk and presence of caries disease with treatment needs (OR: 2.08, p<0.0001). Conclusion Persons who have family risk would have twice as much chance of presenting caries disease in comparison with those without risk, corroborating the relevance of this element in organizing the demand for oral health.

Abstract This study aimed to conduct an integrative review of scientific literature on the topic of Oral Health in the Family Health Strategy in the period 2004-2014. Articles published in national and international journals (n = 141) were consulted and selected from the electronic Library the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and from electronic databases PubMed, Lilacs, BBO and Cochrane. The implementation process of oral health teams in the Family Health Strategy was the most frequent thematic variable (18%) of the 15 variables identified. The Northeast was the Brazilian macro-region where the largest number of published articles originated (n = 61). The studies were predominantly quantitative, and the highest number of publications occurred in 2010 (n = 26). We concluded that there is an increasing interest in investigating the context of oral health implementation in the Family Health Strategy, with particular emphasis on theme categories related to the micro-process work and the redefinition of professional identities arising from multidisciplinary work in primary care.

AbstractThe purpose of this article is to carry out a literature review on oral health team in primary care with their inclusion in the Family Health Strategy (FHS). The publications were consulted in national papers, official documents and other publications of Health Ministry (MS). In the literature it is observed that with the creation of the Unified Health System (SUS) a process of health restructuring services in Brazil began. The Primary Care National Policy (PNAB) is the result of several historical facts involved with the development and consolidation of SUS. The Family Health Program (PSF), now called the Family Health Strategy (ESF) was created in 1994 aimed at reorienting health care with new bases, centering family focus and attempting to achieve improvement in quality of life of Brazilians. In 2000, oral health teams were included in the PSF to extend access  of the Brazilian population to health promotion actions, prevention and recovery of oral health, improve health indicators and encourage the reorganization of dentistry in primary care. ESF is a unique strategy in the reorganization of the Brazilian health system and the inclusion of the ESB an important complement in primary care, aiming an integral dental practice. Keywords: Primary Health Care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of Community Health Agents (CHA) about the oral health/disease process, and compare the results between those who work in Family Health Teams (FHT), with and without Oral Health Teams (OHT). The participants in this study were 162 subjects, representing 66% of the total number of CHA in the municipality, and 81 of them are connected with Family Health Units (FHU) with OHT, and 81 CHS with FHUs without OHT. Data were collected from October to December 2013, by application of a questionnaire, containing personal and professional data, and 12 validated questions about knowledge of the oral health/disease process. The Mann-Whitney test was applied to verify differences between the groups. Statistically significant differences were verified between the groups of CHA when the total scores of questions about the oral health/disease process were analyzed (p < 0.0021). It was concluded that knowledge about the oral health/disease process, of the CHAs connected with a FHU with an OHT was better when compared with that of CHAs connected with a FHU without an OHT.

ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate pregnant women's knowledge and perception of oral practices as well as their relationship with periodontal disease. Methods The project was developed in 27 units of the Family Health Strategy in the city of Picos, State of Piauí, Brazil, whose service prioritized providing the first dental appointment for pregnant women. A questionnaire was applied to 302 pregnant women, and a calibrated examiner (Kappa=0.96) performed the intraoral exam (CPI). Results the disease was present in 90.7% of them, although 96.4% had been to the dentist once, the majority have not seen a dentist during pregnancy, either because they feared the treatment would harm the baby, or lack of perceiving the need for doing so. Among those that had seen a dentist, did so because of pain or due to routine dental appointments. (19.9%). The belief that pregnancy could cause oral problems was mentioned by 39.7%, however, the majority (98.3%) stated they had received no guidance in this period, a fact which was shown to be associated with periodontal disease (p=0.0003). Conclusion It was concluded that there had been disease prevalence in the group, becoming persistent throughout pregnancy and also that the women presented many oral health care doubts during their gestational period.

Objective To evaluate the evolution of indicators after the implementation of 21 Oral Healthcare Teams in the Family Health Strategy. Methods We used data from outpatient services of Oral Healthcare Teams to evaluate efficiency, access, percentage of absences and emergencies of oral healthcare professionals who worked in the partnership between the Sociedade Beneficente Israelita Brasileira Hospital Albert Einstein and the Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de São Paulo, during the period 2009-2011. Results Percentages of emergencies, income, and access showed a significant difference during the period analyzed, but no difference for percentage of absences was found. When monthly analysis was made, it is noteworthy that at the beginning of service implementation a fluctuation occurred, which may indicate that the work was consolidated over the months, becoming capable of receiving new professionals and increasing the population served. Comparison of the indicators in that period with the goals agreed upon between the Sociedade Beneficente Israelita Brasileira Hospital Albert Einstein and the Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de São Paulo made it possible to notice that the Oral Health Teams had a good performance. Conclusion The results showed that the goals were achieved reflecting the increasing number of professionals, the maturing of work processes in the Oral Health Teams, and optimization of the manpower available to perform the activities. Understanding these results will be important to guide the actions of Oral Health Teams for the following years and to assess the achievement of goals.

A participatory, formative meta-evaluation of baseline studies in Brazil is presented. International standards recommended by associations of evaluators were used, along with "specificity" criteria built up using the terms of reference for proposals for the selection of studies. The methodological approach combined a "peer review" of baseline study reports, with a participatory (self) assessment for "primary" evaluators, the average of which provided the final score. Results revealed a classification of "good" and "very good" for the set of standards. The differences between the attribution of scores further highlight the importance of taking into account multiple points of view. Given the lack of pre-existing standards for the reports, the absence of standards and the incipient nature of evaluation focusing on utility, this meta-evaluation does not adequately reflect the quality or potential utility of the baseline studies, however, it will certainly contribute to overcoming these limitations and improving future impact studies of the Brazilian Family Health Strategy Expansion Project (PROESF).
