Abstract Twenty-eight populations of ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi L.) were evaluated for morphological traits and oil yield in two consecutive years. Then, selected ajowan populations that revealed medium and high oil yield and higher seed weight in two years were selected for further studies. These were assessed for physiological traits, total phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant capacity under four salt treatments control, 60, 90, and 120 mM NaCl. The essential oil composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) Thymol (32.7-54.29%), γ -terpinene (21.71–32.81%), and p-cymene (18.74–26.16%) were major components. The highest and lowest thymol were recorded for Qazvin (control) and Qazvin (Low salt concentration), respectively. Salt stress caused an increase in essential oil content of Esfahfo and Qazvin populations. The highest phenolic and flavonoid contents were found in Arak population grown in 60 mM NaCl (183.83 mg TAE g− 1 DW) and Yazd population grown in 90 mM NaCl (5.94 mg QE g− 1 DW). Moreover, Yazd population exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity based on DPPH (IC50 = 1566µg/mL) under 60 mM NaCl and the highest reducing power (0.69 nm) under 120 mM NaCl. Overall, the results revealed that low and moderate salt stress improves the phytochemicals of ajowan, being especially useful for pharmaceutical and food applications.

Present study reports a comparative screening of three ecotypes of Ziziphora tenuior L., sampled from three region with different elevation in middle and northeastern Turkey, based on their essential oil composition, total phenolic content and antioxidant capacities. Z. tenuior ecotypes showed twenty compounds, representing 89.18-91.44% of the essential oil (EOs) identified by GC-MS. The major components of EOs in ecotypes were pulegone (37.23-49.12%), and followed by 1,8-Cineole (2.26-7.78%), limonene (4.20-5.44%), ?-Caryophyllene (3.88-5.11%) and thymol (2.68-4.11%), respectively. Ecotypes showed variable pulegone content and it was increased with elevation increase. The total phenolic contents varied among ecotypes ranged from 21.13 to 27.50 mg of gallic acid equivalent/g EOs. Antioxidant capacity was determined in vitro using DPPH radical-scavenging and FRAP (Ferric reducing power) assays and expressed as concentration of each extract required to inhibit radical by 50% (IC50 and EC50) values that ranged from 0.80 to 0.97 mg/ml in DPPH and 0.42 to 0.55 mg/ml in FRAP assays, respectively. Our results indicated that antioxidant capacity changed among ecotypes. Taking into account the essential oil content, it seems that to select ecotype was the most appropriate to obtain more pulegone for this plant from its wild habitat.

This study was aimed to determine the effects of 24-eBL, a steroid growth regulator, on the plant growth, total phenolic content, essential oil content and composition in “Munstead” lavender cultivar belonging to Lavandula angustifolia. For this aim, 24-eBL was applied to plants at four different concentrations (0, 0.75, 1.50 and 2.25 mg/l) twice, at the beginning of budding and 10 days after the first application. The plants harvested during the full bloom period were evaluated for fresh and dry stemmed flower yields, stemless dry flower yield, total phenolic content and essential oil yield and composition. As a result of the study, 24-eBL at concentrations of 0.75 and 1.50 mg/l significantly increased the stemless dry flower yield, total phenolic content and essential oil yield per plant. 24-eBL applications also changed essential oil composition. To conclude, 24-eBL applications can be used to increase the dry flower yield, phenolic and essential oil contents in lavender plants.

Winter Savory (Satureja montana L.) has been used in traditional medicine and as a spice or natural food preservative in the Mediterranean region for centuries. In this paper, some technological and analytical aspects of the S. montana tinctures development and an evaluation of the essential oil composition are provided. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents and phenolic compounds profile analyzed spectrophotometrically and by high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC), respectively, were evaluated in the developed tinctures. The results showed that the tinctures prepared from the S. montana herb by maceration or remaceration are rich in polyphenols, and there is an influence of the technological factors (particle size and extraction mode) on the total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Caffeic, rosmarinic, and chlorogenic acids, (–)-catechin and rutin were identified in the tinctures using the HPTLC method. p-Thymol (81.79%) revealed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was the predominant compound of the essential oil of this plant. Thus, the high contents of polyphenols and flavonoids in the developed tinctures and p-thymol among the volatile components of the S. montana essential oil could indicate the promising antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of these herbal preparations. The obtained results are a ground for the organization of the manufacture of the S. montana tincture and essential oil with the purpose of performing preclinical studies.

The aim of this study was to determine the chemical variability of wormwood extracts as affected by the growing region. Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were also investigated. The essential oil composition variability ofA. absinthiumL. aerial parts collected from four different Tunisian regions was assessed by gas chromatography (GC/FID) and by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS). In addition, total polyphenols, flavonoids, and condensed tannins as well as antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities of methanolic extract and essential oils were undertaken. Chromatographic analysis of wormwood essential oils showed the predominance of monoterpene hydrocarbons represented mainly by chamazulene. RP-HPLC analysis of wormwood methanolic extract revealed the predominance of phenolic acids. Antiradical activity was region-dependant and the methanolic extract of Bou Salem region has the strongest activity (CI50=9.38±0.82 µg/mL). Concerning the reducing power, the methanolic extract of Bou Salem, Jérissa, and Boukornine regions was more active than the positive control. Obtained results of antimicrobial activities showed that wormwood essential oil is endowed with important antibacterial activity which was strongly related to the organoleptic quality of oil which appeared strongly region-dependant.A. absinthiumL. EOs investigated are quite interesting from a pharmaceutical standpoint because of their biological activities.

In the current study the essential oil obtained from the leaves of Eucalyptus camaldulensis plants collected from five localities of the Montenegro coastline was analyzed. The oil yield varied from 0.63 % (Kotor) up to 1.59% (Tivat). The chemical composition of the leaf essential oil was analyzed using GC-MS technique. Monoterpene hydrocarbons were a major class of compounds. Among them, dominant compounds were p-cymene (17.38-28.60%), ?-phellandrene (12.35-14.47%) and ?-pinene (0.94-11.48%). The second largest group was oxygenated monoterpenes with cryptone (4.97-7.25) and terpinene-4-ol (2.75-4.21%) as predominant. Besides high content of sesquiterpene alcohol spathulenol (7.83-14.15%) was found. According to the results obtained E. camaldulensis from Montenegro can be classified in the chemotype with low 1,8-cineole and high p-cymene and cryptone ratio.

The principal aim of this study was to analyze the chemical composition and qualitative and quantitative variability of essential oils obtained from seven naturally grown populations of thePinus peuceGrisebach, Pinaceae in Kosovo. Plant materials were collected from three populations in the Sharri National Park and from four other populations in the Bjeshkët e Nemuna National Park, in Kosovo. Essential oils were obtained by steam distillation and analyzed by GC-FID (Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detection) and GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry). The results showed that the yield of essential oils (v/wdry weight) varied depending on the origin of population and the plant organs and ranged from 0.7 to 3.3%. In total, 51 compounds were identified. The main compounds wereα-pinene (needles: 21.6–34.9%; twigs: 11.0–24%),β-phellandrene (needles: 4.1–27.7; twigs: 29.0–49.8%), andβ-pinene (needles: 10.0–16.1; twigs: 6.9–20.7%). HCA (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis) and PCA (Principal Component Analyses) were used to assess geographical variations in essential oil composition. Statistical analysis showed that the analyzed populations are grouped in three main clusters which seem to reflect microclimatic conditions on the chemical composition of the essential oils.

The essential oil of aerial parts of Helichrysum conglobatum (Viv.) Steudel. (Asteraceae) from Cyprus was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The essential oil yield was 0.01, v/w. Forty five compounds were identified in the oil comprising 96.1% of the total. The essential oil was mainly composed of sesquiterpene type compounds and oxygenated sesquiterpene derivatives. The main components of the oil were β-caryophyllene (14.6%), γ-curcumene (14.1%), hexadecanoic acid (13.5%), tetradecanoic acid (7.5%), rosifoliol (5.4%) and δ-cadinene (5.3%). This is the first report on the essential oil composition of H. conglobatum from Cyprus.

Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of leaves of two Nigerian species were analyzed for their constituents by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The leaf oil of Ficus benjamina L. (Moraceae), collected during the day, contained high contents of α-pinene (13.9%), abietadiene (9.7%), cis-α-bisabolene (8.2%) and germacrene-D-4-ol (8.4%), while the night sample was dominated by germacrene-D-4-ol (31.5%), 1,10-di- epi-cubenol (8.8%) and hexahydrofarnesylacetone (8.3%). This could be a possible indication of differences in emissions of volatiles by F. benjamina during the day and night. The main compounds of Irvingia barteri Hook. f. (Irvingiaceae) were β-caryophyllene (17.0%), (E)-α-ionone (10.0%), geranial (7.6%), (E)-β-ionone (6.6%) and β-gurjunene (5.1%).

The leaf essential oil composition of Taxodium distichum L., collected from the foothills of Uttarakhand, India was analyzed using gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) equipped with DB-5 (5% diphenyl-95% dimethyl polysiloxane) and β-cyclodextrin (6-tertiarybutyldimethylsiliyl-2,3-diethyl-β-cyclodextrin) capillary columns. Seventeen constituents, representing 90.3 to 99.4% of composition were identified in the essential oils from different seasons, viz. spring, summer, rainy, autumn and winter. The essential oil composition was mainly dominated by monoterpene hydrocarbons, represented mainly by α-pinene (81.9–94.3%). Other constituents of the oil were myrcene (0.5–4.7%), β-pinene (2.2–2.9%), limonene (0.5–1.5%), camphene (≤0.03–1.5%), and α-terpineol (upto 1.6%). Chiral analysis of T. dstichum essential oil on an ethyl substituted β-cyclodextrin capillary column revealed the presence of α-pinene in racemic form, with an enantiomeric ratio of 49.3% for (1 R)-(+)- and 50.7% for (1 S)-(-)-α-pinene.

The essential oil composition from the aerial parts of Baccharoides lilacina (Dalzell & A. Gibson) M. R. Almeida was analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). A total of 41 compounds have been identified, representing 97.4% of the total oil. The main constituents were identified as β-caryophyllene (27.7%), epi-α-cadinol (25.1%), caryophyllene oxide (9.9%), α-muurolol (7.6%), α-cadinene (6.1%) and α-cadinol 4.5%). The oil was found to be rich in oxygenated sesquiterpenes (47.1%) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (46.2%).
