Abstract Background: In developing, countries young women have little awareness about safe sex practice and do casual sexual activities. The consequences such as teenage and unplanned pregnancy and birth, unsafe abortion, miscarriages, and maternal deaths due to unsafe sex practice make youth sexuality much more serious and common in developing countries. Therefore, this study aimed to assess family planning, utilization at first sexual initiation, and associated factors among high school youth female students in Alamata, Tigray, Northern Ethiopia. Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study was employed in Alamata town, south Tigray region, Ethiopia from June 01-30, 2019. A Self-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS statistical package version 22. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariable logistic regressions were used to assess the factor associated with family planning utilization at first sexual initiations. Results: A total of 538 youths female who initiated sexual activities with an average age of 18.2+1. 6 years participated in this study. More than half of youths 297 (55.2%) were grades 9-10 and 283 (52.6 %) were living with both their mother and father. About 122 (22.7%) of youths used family planning methods at their sexual debut. The most common methods used were emergency contraceptive pills 90 (73.8%) and male condom 32 (26.2%). For those who start sexual activities without using family planning, 42 (7.8%) experienced unwanted pregnancy. Students those who got >100birr monthly pocket money were 88% less likely to use a family planning method at first sex [AOR 0.124CI 95% (0.05-0.32)] and regards to religion students categorized as other religions were more likely to use family planning methods [AOR 1.67 CI 95% (1.17-2.57)].Conclusions: Most youth females are not using family planning at first sexual debut. This might expose them to different reproductive health problems. Therefore, an active effort to promote sexuality education and family planning use is recommended at the high school level.

Background. Long-acting contraceptive methods, subdermal implants, and intrauterine devices are reliable, safe, and cost-effective family planning methods. However, these methods are not widely used in Ethiopia despite government effort to increase access. The study is aimed at assessing the rate of utilization of long-acting contraceptive methods among married women and associated factors. Method. We analyzed the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey dataset. A total of 2045 married women of reproductive age group, who were using any modern contraceptive method at the time of the survey, were included in the study. Descriptive statistics were computed to characterize the study participants. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify associated factors, reporting odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Result. The multivariable analyses showed that women educational status, parity, religion, previous history of abortion, desire for more child, and region where the respondents reside were significantly the factors that determine the utilization of long-acting contraceptive. There is a significant regional disparity in long-acting contraceptive utilization. Compared to women residing in Tigray region, those who live in other regions (Afar-Somali, Oromia, Amhara, Benishangul Gumz-Gambela, and Southern Nations Nationalities and People) have low likelihood of using long-acting contraceptive methods. Conclusion. Utilization of long-acting family planning method is low in Ethiopia. There is a significant regional disparity in utilizing these methods. Policy makers should promote culture-sensitive and tailored interventions to improve the utilization of long-acting family planning methods.

Background. Preconception healthcare is promising to improve the reproductive health status of women and couples if they receive care three months to two years before conception. In the current context of Ethiopia, however, preconception healthcare is overlooked in the continuum of care. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the knowledge of preconception healthcare and associated factors: a study among mothers in Jinka town, southern region, Ethiopia. Methods. A community-based cross-sectional study was employed among 522 randomly selected women of childbearing age who are living in Jinka town from March to April 2018. The study considers all the kebeles in the town. Study subjects were determined using proportionate-to-population size allocation. Then, a systematic random sampling technique was applied. Data were collected using a semistructured and pretested questionnaire. Descriptive summary data and binary logistic regression analysis were carried out to identify factors with the 95% confidence level and a p value of less than 0.05. Results. A total of 513 study subjects participated in this study. The overall preconception healthcare knowledge score of women in Jinka town was 51.1%. In the multivariable analysis, housewives (AOR = 2.93; 95% CI: 1.38–6.19), an education level of at least college (AOR = 3.79; 95% CI: 1.75–8.23), no history of neonatal death (AOR = 4.13; 95% CI = 1.39–12.25), and the use of family planning methods (AOR = 2.38; 95% CI: 1.49–3.79) increased the probability of preconception healthcare knowledge compared to the counterparts. Conclusion. In this study, women’s knowledge of preconception healthcare was found borderline. The identified factors were housewife, education level of at least college, no history of neonatal death, and using family planning methods. Therefore, emphasizing these factors for the enhancement of women’s knowledge of preconception healthcare is a necessary step.

This study examines the associations between women’s empowerment and family planning use in Jimma Zone, Western Ethiopia. A total of 746 randomly selected married women of reproductive age were interviewed. The data were employed by structural equation modelling (SEM) to investigate the complex and multidimensional pathways to show women’s empowerment domains in family planning utilisation. Results of the study revealed that 72% of married women had used family planning. Younger women, having access to information, having access to health facilities and being aware about family planning methods, living in a rural area, having an older partner and increased household decision-making power were associated with using family planning methods. Women’s empowerment is an important determinant of contraceptive use. Women’s empowerment dimensions included increased household decision-making power, socio-demographic variables and having access to information about family planning and accessible health facilities. These were found to be important determinants of contraceptive use. Future interventions should focus on integrating women’s empowerment into family planning programming, particularly in enhancing women’s autonomy in decision making. Further research is warranted on the socio-cultural context of women that influences women’s empowerment and family planning use to establish an in-depth understanding and equity of women in society.
