Abstract Proper contrast used for elements within websites or applications is one of the key factors providing their visibility and ability to attract user attention. While usability guidelines and standards such as WCAG 1 assume the existence of minimal contrast for optimum user experience, maximal contrast for positive user experience has not been defined. Recent studies showed that too high a contrast can be harmful for user experience, while visibility is reduced if it is too low. In the present study, experiments were performed to examine the level of user-friendliness and visibility for selected color pairs. We calculated the color contrast according to the WCAG standard. As a result, it was possible to find color combinations not necessarily with a high contrast but delivering visibility and not diminishing user experience. Finally, a ColoUR Picker Tool was developed that supports designers in the design of effective visual communication, which is understood as searching for a balance between user-friendliness, visibility, and color contrast. Research expands current efforts towards effective web design and increased user experience.

Interactive environments create endless possibilities for the design of websites, games, online platforms, and mobile applications. Their visual aspects and functional characteristics influence the user experience. Depending on the project, the purpose of the environment can be oriented toward marketing targets, user experience, or accessibility. Often, these conflicting aspects should be integrated within a single project, and a search for trade-offs is needed. One of these conflicts involves a disparity in user behavior concerning declared preferences and real observed activity in terms of visual attention. Taking into account accessibility guidelines (WCAG) further complicates the problem. In our study, we focused on the analysis of color combinations and their contrast in terms of user-friendliness; visual intensity, which is important for attracting user attention; and recommendations from the Web Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). We took up the challenge to reduce the disparity between user preferences and WCAG contrast, on one hand, and user natural behavior registered with an eye-tracker, on the other. However, we left the choice of what is more important—human conscious reaction or objective user behavior results—to the designer. The former corresponds to user-friendliness, while the latter, visual intensity, is consistent with marketing expectations. The results show that the ranking of visual objects characterized by different levels of contrast differs when considering the perspectives of user experience, commercial goals, and objective recording. We also propose an interactive tool with the possibility of assigning weights to each criterion to generate a ranking of objects.

Online platforms and multiple accesses are two of the necessary conveniences that consumers nowadays look for. A multiple channel strategy allows customer interaction from various angles but does not provide a flawless, coherent user experience. This chapter identifies key factors that drive a successful omni-channel platform and proposes a successful omni-channel strategy framework. A survey consisting of 21 items was administered to gain customers' perspectives on channels provided by a particular company. Descriptive analysis was performed to study the underlying issues faced by customers when making complaints, service request, and enquiries via the multi-channel interaction provided. Findings show that eight technological and four customer engagement factors contribute to a comprehensive omni-channel strategy framework for a deeper understanding on the significance of a flawless user platform.

Roboticists have developed a diverse array of powered exoskeletons for human augmentation and rehabilitation over the last few decades. One of the key design objectives is to minimize the discomfort to enhance the user experience. The high inertia and joint misalignment of conventional rigid exoskeletons are two key factors that cause these problems. Different types of control algorithms have been developed to compensate the inertia and render low impedance to the wearers [1–2].

AbstractThe research herein shows the absence of an orderly repository of the garments worn at the show arts environment, rituals, and festive acts in the Peruvian context. Consequently, the gap between the object and the spectator broadens regardless of several events carried out in a face-to-face manner. The typical costume, as part of the intangible material cultural heritage of the dances, rites, and festivities of a city, evolves and transforms over time due to different factors. A digital repository that captures the essence of the costume and its evolution is necessary to connect and link with the cultural object. In this sense, based on the characteristics defined in the Ux Honeycomb, the research proposes to determine the interaction between these characteristics in a digital costume repository to generate value to the community. In order to achieve the objectives, a review of the literature was made, as well as an analysis of digital repositories and interviews with experts, professionals, and students of creative careers. From the interaction, produced by the internal and external force, of two or more values mentioned above the utility of the digital repository is generated. The relationships and interactions between the elements bring functionality and vitality to the repository. Keywords: Costumes repository, value, cultural heritage, user experience, web design.

Nowadays, guidelines and standards play a key role in the adoption of (computer) technologies by industries and society. In essence, they constitute a rapidly evolving medium for transferring established and de facto knowledge to various guidelines and standards in order to achieve consistency and user-friendliness of user interfaces, especially in cases where complex and rapidly evolving technologies are employed. Despite the indisputable value and importance of such knowledge, several studies investigating the use of guidelines and standards by designers and developers (e.g., Wandke & Hüttner, 2001) have concluded that they are frequently ignored. This is attributed partly to the fact that such knowledge is not easily exploitable (Tetzlaff & Schwartz, 1991), and partly to their incarnation medium (i.e., paper based-manuals) that usually raises issues of ineffectiveness and lack of user-friendliness (e.g., Bevan & Macleod, 1994).
