Abstract Background Pectus excavatum (PE) negatively impacts psychological function, but its effect on autonomic nervous system (ANS) function has not been investigated. We evaluated ANS function following postural changes in patients with PE.Methods The participants were 14 healthy men (control group) and 20 men with PE (study group). Psychological function was assessed using the visual analog scale for pain, Brief Symptom Rating Scale-5, and Beck Depression Inventory-II. Sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). ANS regulation in response to postural change was measured in the supine position and immediately after sitting. All measurements were compared between the control and study groups at baseline and between the study groups before and after Nuss surgery.ResultsAt baseline, upon postural change, symptomatic activity increased in the control group (50.3% to 67.4%, p=0.035) but not in the study group (55.0% to 54.9%, p=0.654); parasympathetic activity decreased in the control group (49.7% to 32.6%, p=0.035) but not in the study group (45.1% to 45.1%, p=0.654); and overall ANS regulation increased in the control group (1.02 to 2.08, p=0.030) but not in the study group (1.22 to 1.22, p=0.322). In response to postural change after Nuss surgery in the study group, sympathetic activity increased (48.7% to 70.2%, p=0.005), parasympathetic activity decreased (51.3% to 29.8%, p=0.005), and overall ANS regulation increased (0.95 to 2.36, p=0.012).Conclusion ANS function in response to postural change is dysregulated in patients with PE, which improved after Nuss surgery.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, ID: NCT03346876, November 15, 2017, retrospectively registered,https://register.clinicaltrials.gov/prs/app/action/SelectProtocol?sid=S0007KGI&selectaction=Edit&uid=U0003JZU&ts=2&cx=cstxeg

Introduction. Professional athlete training is significantly different from recreational physical activity, and sustained, repetitive exposure to over-strenuous and intensive training may result in critical changes of most systems and organs in a sportsman’s body. Aim. The assessment of the influence of multiannual strength-endurance training on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and cardiovascular system (CVS) among the rowers of Polish national team. Materials and Methods. 20 rowers, aged 20–30, seniors of Polish national team were qualified into the study. The functional examination of ANS was conducted by means of Task Force® Monitor system. The assessed parameters included hemodynamic parameters, heart rate, and blood pressure variability and reflexes sensitivity of baroreceptors. In order to examine and compare the reaction of autonomic nervous system the subjects underwent a tilt test. Results. In the study group, significantly higher levels of sBP (129.3  ±  12.2 vs 118.3 ± 8.4, p=0.0030), SI (59.9 ± 8.8 vs 41.2 ± 6.8, p>0.001), CI (3.2 ± 0.5 vs 2.4 ± 0.4, p>0.001), and significantly lower levels of HR (54.2 ± 5.3 vs 60.1 ± 5.7, p=0.0034) and TPRI (2333.3 ± 389.9 vs 2950.2 ± 604.2, p=0.0012) compared to the control group, were found. After the tilt test the levels of HR (p=0.0005) and TPRI (p=0.0128) were significantly higher but SI (p>0.001) and CI (p=0.0006) were significantly lower in the study group compared to the control. Conclusions. Multiannual strength-endurance training connected with rowing activities substantially modulates the activity of cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system, influences the volumetric workload of the heart and structural changes, and increases the sensitivity of reflexes of arterial baroreceptors.

The aim of the study was twofold: first, to compare the activity of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) between the population self-declared as electrohypersensitive (EHS) and their matched control individuals without intended exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF). The second objective was to determine whether acute exposure to different radiofrequency signals modifies ANS activity in EHS. For that purpose, two different experiments were undertaken, in which ANS activity was assessed through heart rate variability (HRV) and skin conductance (SC). In the first experiment, a comparison between the EHS group ( n = 30) and the control group ( n = 25) showed that the EHS has an increased number of responses to auditory stimuli as measured by skin conductance activity, and that none of the short-term heart rate variability parameters differ between the two matched study groups. The second experiment, performed in a shielded chamber, involved 10 EHS from the first experiment. The volunteers participated in two different sessions (sham and exposure). The participants were consecutively exposed to four EMF signals (GSM 900, GSM 1800, DECT, and Wi-Fi) at environmental level (1 V/m). The experiment was double blinded and counterbalanced. The HRV variables studied did not differ between the two sessions. Concerning electrodermal activity, the data issued from skin conductance and tonic activity did not differ between the sessions, but showed a time variability. In conclusion, the HRV and SC profiles did not significantly differ between the EHS and control populations under no exposure. Exposure did not have an effect on the ANS parameters we have explored. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study provided analysis on the skin conductance parameters using a newly developed method (peak/min, extraction of skin conductance responses) that had not been performed previously. Additionally, the skin conductance signal was decomposed, considering tonic and phasic activities to be a distinct compound. Moreover, this is the first time a study has been designed into two steps to understand whether the autonomic nervous system is disturbed in the EHS population.

Introduction: Available data suggest that there is an association between endometriosis and a group of disorders including autonomic nervous system irregularities. A deeper understanding of relationship between endometriosis and autonomic nervous system is needed as it may lead to novel discoveries on the causes or consequences of endometriosis. In this study, we analyzed the prevalence of migraine in patients with endometriosis. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, medical records of women were reviewed through January 2013 to December 2017. Women with laparoscopically proven endometriosis (n = 185) were compared with those without endometriosis (n = 168). The 3-item screening questions (ID Migraine™) test was used to screen migraine. Data were analyzed using SPSS v25 (IBM Corporation). The χ2 test was used for analyzing the nominal parameters and group comparisons. Pearson χ2 was used to study the association between endometriosis and migraine. Results: The mean age was 31.86 ± 4.49 years of the endometriosis group and 28.95 ± 5.11 years of the controls (p = 0.408). The two pre-screening questions of ID Migraine test were answered positively by 86 patients of the endometriosis group (75.4%) and by 53 patients of the control group (54.6%) (p = 0.001). Of these patients, 51 (44.7% of endometriosis group) and 26 (26.8% of control group) were diagnosed as having migraine using 3-item Migraine questionnaire (p = 0.007). Conclusion: This study showed that the prevalence of migraine was significantly higher in patients with endometriosis. Because there is a strong correlation, patients with endometriosis should be screened for headache and migraine to increase the benefits of care.

Abstract   Within the framework of the research into pathological conditions and syndromes associated with undifferentiated connective tissue dysplasia (UCTD), an emphasis needs to be placed on the changes in heart rhythm. In puberty, the severity of neurovegetative disorders caused by the presence of UCTD might increase manifold. The features of heart rate variability (HRV) in pubertal children against the background of UCTD have been studied insufficiently and require more detailed analysis. This study aims to assess heart rate variability and tone of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in puberty-aged children with UCTD. Two groups of children were examined, with methods including electrocardiography and cardiointervalography. The main group consisted of 36 puberty-aged children with UCTD, the control group consisted of 30 healthy children. ANS tone was assessed based on the HRV. In the control group of children aged 11, the value of variation range (VR) was 0.18±0.4, mode amplitude (MA) 35.2±2.4, stress index (IN) 72.8±4.3, which corresponds to the state of vegetative balance. As the puberty progresses, the state of eutonia is replaced by the activation of the sympathetic division of the ANS, which becomes most pronounced at the age of 13 years. In the control group of children aged 13, the value of VR was 0.08±0.02, MA 61.7±2.1, SI 210.6±8.6, which corresponds to moderate sympathicotonia. By the end of puberty, in healthy children, the severity of sympathetic activation begins to decrease, and at the age of 15 years, vegetative balance is again observed. However, this pattern is violated in children with UCTD. Upon entering puberty, moderate activation of the sympathetic division of the ANS is already observed in children with UCTD. At the age of 11 years in this group, the value of VR is 0.06±0.02, MA 72.4±3.1, SI 211.2±8.6. At the age of 13, pronounced sympathicotonia is observed, which is confirmed by the values of VR - 0.04±0.01, MA 80.2±4.3 and SI 34.3±14.7. By the end of puberty in children with UCTD, in contrast to the control group, the analyzed parameters indicate not an equilibrium of the ANS, but the predominance of parasympathetic activation. The research provides an insight into heart rate variability in puberty-aged children with UCTD. It was established that healthy children enter puberty in a state of equilibrium of the autonomic nervous system, which in the middle of puberty is replaced by moderate sympathicotonia, and then returns to its original values. Children with the presence of UCTD enter puberty with moderately pronounced sympathicotonia, which gradually increases to pronounced values and is replaced by moderate vagotonia. This work describes the educational game “Integrating Synapse, Muscle Contraction, and Autonomic Nervous System,” which was developed to assist students in understanding and integrating concepts related to the physiology of synapses, muscle contraction, and the autonomic nervous system. Analysis was made of the effect of the game on learning and the students’ opinions about it. Dentistry students were divided into control and game groups. They attended lectures about the topics, after which the control group students were submitted to a test, whereas the game group performed the game activity before undertaking the test. The mean score was significantly higher for the game group, compared with the control group ( P < 0.05). Pharmacy students also attended lectures about these topics; in the next class, the students performed a pretest and the activity with the educational game. After the game, a posttest was applied. The mean scores were significantly higher for the posttest than for the pretest ( P < 0.05). Students of medicine attended the lectures and performed the activity with the educational game, without the learning assessment. All of the students answered a question, using a 5-point Likert-type scale, concerning whether they thought the activity with the game was useful for learning. The mean scores obtained by the dentistry, pharmacy, and medicine students were 4.7 ± 0.6, 4.9 ± 0.3, and 4.3 ± 0.1, respectively. The educational game increased the learning of the undergraduate students, in agreement with their opinions of the strategy.

Introduction. In connection with the widespread introduction of osteopathy into practical medicine, new facts confi rming its effectiveness are appearing. These facts need theoretical justifi cation. The biodynamic approach is the least studied and scientifi cally proven approach in osteopathy. There are only a few works describing the benefi cial effects of this type of treatment on the autonomic nervous system based on an assessment of heart rate variability. One of the most sensitive indicators of changes in the state of the body is the electrical activity of the skin (EAS), which is widely used in modern polygraphic devices.Goal of research — to investigate the EAS in the physician and in the patient during the session of craniosacral biodynamics (CSB).Materials and methods. The study involved 32 patients who were randomly divided into 2 groups — control group (10 patients) and main group (22 patients). In the control group there were 8 women and 2 men aged from 20 to 65 years (mean age 42±20 years). In the main group, 16 women and 6 men aged from 18 to 68 years (mean age 40±16 years) were examined. Two professional certifi ed computerized polygraphs «Chris» were used, simultaneously recording the EAS values of the doctor and the patient. In the main group, the background indicators were recorded at the fi rst stage (10 minutes), then the procedure of the CSB, which lasted 20 minutes, was recordered. The control group was used only for registration of EAS. At the same time, patients were in the same conditions as in the main group.Results. During the CSB, the state of both the doctor (p<0,001) and the patient (p<0,001) has changed signifi cantly. At the same time, the tendency of changes in individual indicators of EAS in patients during treatment was logical. The altered state of the physician practically did not depend on its original level (p>0,05). However, there was a high relationship between the states of the doctor during contact and non-contact treatment (correlation coeffi cient 0,80, p<0,001). The patient′s initial condition had a moderate, statistically signifi cant relationship with his condition during the treatment (p<0,001). Since the beginning of the craniosacral biodynamics, the patient′s condition has hardly changed. At the same time, the contactless impact on the patient′s body was comparable with the contact effect (correlation coeffi cient 0,97, p<0,001). There was no signifi cant relationship between the states of the physician and the patient before the beginning of the treatment (correlation coeffi cient 0,18, p>0,05). However, in the process of craniosacral biodynamics, a statistically signifi cant relationship was formed between them with a correlation coeffi cient for non-contact exposure equal to 0,49 (p<0,01) and for contact exposure — 0,34 (p<0,05). Biodynamic treatment statistically signifi cantly improved the state of the autonomic nervous system.Conclusion. The study of the electrical activity of the skin in craniosacral biodynamics is a highly informative method, which allows to verify and quantify the changes occurring in the patient and in the physician during the treatment.

Both motor imagery (MI) and action observation (AO) trigger the activation of the neurocognitive mechanisms that underlie the planning and execution of voluntary movements in a manner that resembles how the action is performed in a real way. The main objective of the present study was to compare the autonomic nervous system (ANS) response in an isolated MI group compared to a combined MI + AO group. The mental tasks were based on two simple movements that are recorded in the revised movement imagery questionnaire in third-person perspective. The secondary objective of the study was to test if there was any relationship between the ANS variables and the ability to generate mental motor imagery, the mental chronometry and the level of physical activity. The main outcomes that were measured were heart rate, respiratory rate and electrodermal activity. A Biopac MP150 system, a measurement device of autonomic changes, was used for the quantification and evaluation of autonomic variables. Forty five asymptomatic subjects were selected and randomized in three groups: isolated MI, MI + AO and control group (CG). In regards to the activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), no differences were observed between MI and MI + AO groups (p > .05), although some differences were found between both groups when compared to the CG (p < .05). Additionally, even though no associations were reported between the ANS variables and the ability to generate mental motor imagery, moderate-strong positive associations were found in mental chronometry and the level of physical activity. Our results suggest that MI and MI + AO, lead to an activation of the SNS, although there are no significant differences between the two groups. Based on results obtained, we suggest that tasks of low complexity, providing a visual input through the AO does not facilitates their subsequent motor imagination. A higher level of physical activity as well as a longer time to perform mental task, seem to be associated with a greater increase in the ANS response.

Autonomic nervous system properties in migraine patients and nonmedication treatment in headache free period The aim of the study was to characterise parameters of the autonomic nervous system in migraineurs and to find out and to adapt the optimal biofeedback (BFB) training methods. Heart rate (HR), arterial blood pressure and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) at rest, static workload, arterial occlusion and during recovery period were measured. 22 migraineurs (female, average age 22.2 ± 2.4 years) and 14 healthy age and gender matched controls participated. Migraine patients were divided into two groups (M1 and M2) according to HR and BRS at rest. At rest 60% of migraine patients (group M1) had significantly decreased HR vs. control group (P< 0.01). The M2 group showed a tendency to decreased BRS at rest comparing to the control group and significantly (P< 0.01) differed in this parameter from the M1 group. In a 10 s precontraction period M1 group had a significantly lower HR increase comparing to other analysed groups (P< 0.01). HR was significantly decreased in the M1 group during the recovery period comparing to the control and M2 groups (P< 0.05). Both parts of autonomic nervous system, PNS and SNS branches, were impaired in migraineurs. The M2 group had most likely decreased PNS activity and impaired SNS activity. M1 group patients showed increased PNS activity. BFB training sessions reduced migraine attack frequency and need for medication in the M2 group.
