Abstract Parameters of gear flanks, such as roughness, hardness, and residual stress, impact their working performance. Therefore, it is essential to optimize these parameters for increasing gears’ life. Thus, this study combined the meshing theory and the ultrasonic surface rolling technology, and presented an innovative design to realize ultrasonic burnishing. First, the dimensions of the ultrasonic burnishing device with two nodes integrated with a gear at the bottom were calculated using frequency equations by a numerical method. Second the correctness of the calculating results was verified by simulations and experiments. Third, the influence of the ratio between the width and diameter of the gear on the acoustic system was studied. Finally, experimental platform of the rolling enhanced acoustic system for gear tooth surface is built successfully. A series of experiments were conducted, and the results showed that the roughness decreased and the hardness and the residual stress improved. Therefore, this design provided a new theory and technology to machine complicated surfaces such as gear flanks.

Gears’ accuracy has important influences on its working performance and life. Electrochemical mechanical finishing (ECMF) was applied to finish cylindrical gears. The influence of the generative type of ECMF was studied theoretically and experimentally on the shape of gear teeth, and on the dimensional accuracy between teeth, and that in the tooth thickness direction. The results indicate that the generative type of ECMF can improve the accuracy between teeth, as well, the dimensional accuracy of gear tooth and that in the thickness direction may be also improved.

Gears’ surface quality and modification characteristic have an important influence on its working performance. Pulse Electrochemical Finishing (PECF) could get excellent surface topography. In this project, PECF with a scanning cathode is used to finishing the cylinder gear. Tooth profile modification is realized by PECF with an uneven interelectrode gap distribution along the tooth profile and tooth lead modification is realized by PECF with a variable moving velocity of the cathode. The experimental results show that the tooth surface roughness could be decreased from Ra 3.9μm to Ra 0.35μm, which means that the PECF process possesses the finishing ability for the raw surface tooth, and the difference of material removal of PECF with an uneven interelectrode gap distribution could be 46μm and the material removal could be controlled by regulating the moving velocity of the cathode, which means tooth profile and lead modification could be realized by PECF.

The fatigue strength of a gear tooth surface is affected by various factors, which subsequently impacts the transmission performance of gears. Usually, shot peening treatment is carried out during processing to improve the performance of gears. Most current studies focus on theoretical descriptions and simulation analyses of shot peening treatment. However, in this paper, the relationships among shot peening treatment, residual stress, and bending fatigue strength of a gear tooth surface are discussed, through experimental methods. Based on X-ray stress analysis, at select locations on the test samples, the residual stresses on gear tooth surfaces with and without shot peening treatment are determined and contrasted. The results show that shot peening treatment can effectively increase the residual stress on gear tooth surfaces. In addition, an electromagnetic resonance fatigue tester is used to analyze the bending fatigue strength of gear tooth surfaces. The test results indicate that the bending fatigue strength of the gear teeth with shot peening is higher than that of the gear teeth without shot peening. The obtained conclusions lay the foundation for further practical engineering applications of gears.

The kinetics of reaction of C2H5OH with N2O behind shock waves is studied. The quantitative measurements of the time profiles of concentration of O atoms were carried out by the method of atomic resonance absorption spectroscopy (ARAS) using resonance vacuum-ultraviolet line of O-atom at 130.5 nm. For the calibration of absorption intensity of oxygen atoms depending on its concentration, the special series of experiments in the mixture containing different amounts of N2O in Ar was carried out at T = 2100 ± 50 K when molecule of N2O is completely dissociated. An experimental study of the appearance and consumption of oxygen atoms during the reaction of ethanol with oxygen in mixture 10 ppm N2O + (10 ... 0.1) ppm C2H5OH + Ar at temperatures of 16002300 K and pressures of 200-300 kPa have been carried out. A kinetic analysis of obtained data was performed using the Chemkin package.

Fine finishing of spur gears reduces the vibrations and noise and upsurges the service life of two mating gears. A new magnetorheological gear profile finishing (MRGPF) process is utilized for the fine finishing of spur gear teeth profile surfaces. In the present study, the development of a theoretical mathematical model for the prediction of change in surface roughness during the MRGPF process is done. The present MRGPF is a controllable process with the magnitude of the magnetic field, therefore, the effect of magnetic flux density (MFD) on the gear tooth profile has been analyzed using an analytical approach. Theoretically calculated MFD is validated experimentally and with the finite element analysis. To understand the finishing process mechanism, the different forces acting on the gear surface has been investigated. For the validation of the present roughness model, three sets of finishing cycle experimentations have been performed on the spur gear profile by the MRGPF process. The surface roughness of the spur gear tooth surface after experimentation was measured using Mitutoyo SJ-400 surftest and is equated with the values of theoretically calculated surface roughness. The results show the close agreement which ranges from −7.69% to 2.85% for the same number of finishing cycles. To study the surface characteristics of the finished spur gear tooth profile surface, scanning electron microscopy is used. The present developed theoretical model for surface roughness during the MRGPF process predicts the finishing performance with cycle time, improvement in the surface quality, and functional application of the gears.

Planetary gear trains (PGTs) are widely used in various machines owing to their many advantages. However, they suffer from problems of noise and vibration due to the structural complexity and giving rise to substantial noise, vibration, and harshness with respect to both structures and human users. In this report, the sound level from PGTs is measured in an anechoic chamber based on human aural characteristic, and basic features of sound are investigated. Gear noise is generated by the vibration force due to varying gear tooth stiffness and the vibration force due to tooth surface error, or transmission error (TE). Dynamic TE is considered to be increased because of internal and external meshing. The vibration force due to tooth surface error can be ignored owing to almost perfect tooth surface. A vibration force due to varying tooth stiffness could be a major factor.

New geometry of generating spiral bevel gear is proposed. The key idea of the new proposed geometry is that the gear tooth surface geometry can be investigated in a developed curved surface based on the planar engagement principle. It is proved that the profile curve on the back of generating cone surface is a conical involute curve. The equations of generated gear tooth surface are achieved by the conical involute curve sweeping along the tooth trace of gear. The obtained equations are explicit and independent of the machine-tool settings. This differs from previous studies. The developed theory is illustrated with numerical examples to compare with the previous method, the comparison approves that the method is possible in this way. The new method indicates that there are new solutions to the design the production of spiral bevel gear.

Abstract The dynamic response of a beam-tip mass-pendulum system subjected to sinusoidal excitations is considered. The conditions under which resonant and nonresonant oscillations occur are investigated and discussed. The main objective of this study was to conduct a series of experiments to investigate the autoparametric interaction between the first two modes of the system. The use of a pendulum as a passive control device was experimentally evaluated.
