Aim.The aim of the work described herein was to study the dynamics of allantoin accumulation in the underground phytomass ofEchium vulgareL.,Symphytum caucasicumM. Bieb. andS. asperumLepech. as well as to clarify the role of allantoin in plant adaptation to stress factors.Methods.We studied the roots of plants growing in the foothill (Nalchik, 490–512 m above sea level) and the mountain zones of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (Terskol village, 2530 m above sea level; Verkhnyaya Balkaria village, 2680 m above sea level). The roots were collected at the stages of rosetting, flowering, fruiting and at the end of the growing season. Aqueous-alcoholic extracts of shredded roots were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography.Results.The highest content of allantoin in the roots ofEchium vulgare,Symphytum caucasicum,S. asperumplants was noted at the end of the growing season, respectively 0.915; 0.342–0.658; 2,842–3,426%. Under conditions of low temperatures and increased solar radiation, the content of allantoin in the roots increases 1.2–1.9 times as compared with the plants of the foothill zone.Conclusion.Allantoin plays an important role in the process of adapting species of the family Boraginaceae to oxidative stress caused by hypothermia and increased solar radiation.

The GLORYS12v.1 and ERA5 reanalyses for different months are used to study a relationship between long-term variations in the monthly mean values of sea level in different areas of the Kara Sea and their steric factors during 1993-2018. The areas of the sea were identified where the relationships between these changes and variations in the mean temperature and salinity of the upper quasihomogeneous water layer, as well as the variations in the monthly mean intensity of their insolation, are statistically significant.

This survey article, most of whose results are described in greater detail in Munk and Cartwright (1966), which will hereafter be abbreviated to MC, describes methods which aim to separate the response of the sea level at a given place due to various exciting forces such as gravity, solar radiation, non-linear effects, and weather. In so doing, it provides predictors for sea level which are formally simpler and somewhat more accurate than those given by the classical methods.

Sea skatersHalobates matsumuraiEsaki andAsclepios shiranui(Esaki) are among the few marine insects found in Japan. For the past several decades, they have become rare in most localities and have now been designated as endangered by the government. In order to understand their adaptive strategies to the marine environment and to develop conservation measures, it is essential to know their life histories. We studied their lifecycles in Kujukushima Bay off the north coast of Kyushu (Japan) where they co-occurred in small coves along the jagged coast. They appeared to have more than one generation a year and to overwinter in the egg stage. Eggs ofH. matsumuraiwere laid on natural sandstones and man-made sandstone walls along the shore, mostly above the average sea level. The eggs had very hard shells, presumably adaptive to protect them from desiccation, solar radiation, and wave action, especially during the overwintering period.

The intensity of solar radiation available at the horizontal surface are measured by a CMP6 Pyranometer in Biratnagar (26.45°N, 87.27°E), Pokhara (28.22°N, 83.32°E), Kathmandu (27.72°N, 85.32°E ) and Lukla (26.69°N,86.73°E), which are 72m, 800m, 1350m, and 2850m, above from the sea level. This paper compares the seasonal and altitude variations of total solar radiation measured at above mentioned sites. The maximum total solar radiation of about 704.51 W/m2, 815.97 W/m2 777.27 W/m2 and 914.03 W/m2, are observed in Biratnagar, Pokhara, Kathmandu, and Lukla respectively. Solar radiation available in any location is affected by topography and pollution. It is found that the more solar energy is available during spring than in summer in Lukla. The solar radiation is observed higher in Pokhara than in Kathmandu. It might be due to absorption of solar energy by air pollutants which are higher in Kathmandu as compared to Pokhara.In addition we also discussed the diurnal variation of measured and calculated data of solar radiation on clear sky day. The annual average solar energy measuring 4.95, 5.44, 5.19 and 4.61 kWh/m2/day is found in Biratnagar, Pokhara Kathmandu and Lukla respectively. To the Editor.— Weinstock et al1 observed "a significant association of melanoma with latitude of residence during the teenage years," thereby implying a direct relationship between solar radiation intensity and increasing tropical latitude. However, for specific locations, this relationship may not be true. For example, average daily solar radiation in Spokane, WA (latitude 47 degrees, 40 minutes, elevation 2400 feet), was 1314 BTU during July, compared to 862 BTU in Charleston, SC (latitude 32 degrees, 53 minutes, elevation sea level).2

The global solar radiation (GSR) is measured at the horizontal surface since 2011 using calibrated CMP6 Pyranometer at Nepalgunj which is located at an altitude 150m above sea level. This paper explains the daily, monthly and seasonal variation of global solar radiation and also compares temperature with global solar radiation. The average temperature in Nepalgunj varies between 44°C (it is hottest from May through July) and 30°C, although during winter (November-January) it can reach 4°C. The annual average daily global solar radiation is about 12.9MJ/m2/day which is sufficient to promote active and passive solar energy technology in Nepalgunj and other similar geographical locations.
