Objective: To find the risk factors of severe erectile dysfunction. Material & methods: This Cross sectional study subjects completed the questionnare at the time of diagnosing Erectile Dysfunction (ED). Amount of 297 ED patients with mean age of 49.08 ± 13.69 years were enrolled consecutively at Urology Outpatient Clinic from 2005 to 2012. The questionnaire consisted of marital status, educational status, and occupation, comorbidities, habits, and International Index of Erectile Dysfunction-5 (IIEF-5) questionnare. We compared population proportion of ED severity (severe vs not severe) between sociodemographic, comorbidities and habits group and we also compared the mean of ED onset age and ED duration between those groups. Results: Of the patients, 29.3% were classified as severe ED, and 70.7% were classified other than severe ED (mild, mild-moderate, etc). The median of ED onset age was 47 years (46.64 ± 13.77 years) and the median of ED duration was 52 weeks (126.75 ± 167.69 weeks) ranged from 1 to 1040 weeks. We found status of low education level, unemployed, not married and having diabetes mellitus could increase the risk of having severe ED in ED population with each prevalence ratio was 1.44 (1.12-1.87), 2.02 (1.20-3.42), 1.91 (1.10-3.30), 2.01 (1.30-3.12). Not married group was also found have an earlier mean of ED age onset (mean difference 6.78 (2.37-11.19) years. Conclusion: We found that education level, occupation status, marital status and diabetes mellitus contributes in determining ED severity.

Objective: To determinate the association between work overload degree and sociodemographic characteristics of informal caregivers of older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Material and Methods: Quantitative, descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study of 83 informal caregivers of older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, coming from the northeast sector of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico. The Zarit Scale was used to measure the overload degree, and items regarding sociodemographic characteristics were included. Results: The profile of the caregiver with tendency to work overload was: woman (81.9%), housewife (47%), with an average age of 40 years, married (53%), daughter of the older adult (72.3%), low schooling (66.1%), with a monthly income lower than or equal to $6,799 Mexican pesos (51.8%), one to three years acting as caregiver (54.2%), and dedicating more than 17 hours per day to provide care to the patient (51.8%). The 48.2% of the caregivers showed intense work overload, 44.6% absence of work overload and 7.2% slight work overload. A statistically significant association was found (p=0.02) between the degree of work overload and the marital status and occupation variables. Conclusions: The statistically significant association indicates that marital status and occupation is related to the caregiver’s perceived work overload degree. It is relevant to propose interventions addressed to these characteristics in order to reduce the work overload, which is a risk for the caregiver’s health with the aforementioned profile, since it is related to greater odds of medical, psychiatric, and social morbidity and mortality.

Background. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder of multiple etiologic factors characterized by chronic hyperglycemia with disturbance of carbohydrate metabolism. It can play the vital role in the cause of morbidity and mortality through continued clinical consequence. Therefore, good knowledge, attitude, and practices of glycemic control are necessary in promoting care, in enhancing better therapeutic outcomes, and in the prevention and management of diabetes complications. Methods. A cross-sectional study design was conducted to determine knowledge, attitude, and practice towards glycemic control and its associated factors. Diabetic patients who were attending the University of Gondar Hospital from March to May 2018 were included in the study. The data was collected using questionnaires, and individuals that can fulfill our inclusion criteria were selected by a simple random sampling technique. SPSS version 20 was used for descriptive and logistic regression analysis, and finally, the variables were summarized and presented using tables and graphs. Results. Of the total 403 participants, 216 (53.6%) were males and 176 (43.7%) were illiterate. Of the total, 250 (62%) had good knowledge, 271 (67.2%) had a good attitude, and 300 (74.4%) had good practice towards glycemic control. In multivariate logistic regression, occupational status and marital status were significantly associated with the knowledge of participants towards glycemic control. Occupational status, educational status, and marital status were significantly associated with attitude and practice towards glycemic control. Conclusion. More than half of the participants had good knowledge, attitude, and practice towards glycemic control. Occupational status and marital status were significantly associated with knowledge, attitude, and practice towards glycemic control.

Abstract Objective: To verify self-care activities of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and to analyze the relationship with sociodemographic and clinical variables. Method: A cross-sectional study was performed of 149 people using the Diabetes Self-Care Activities Questionnaire. Results: Of the 15 self-care activities analyzed, appropriate behavior was observed for aspects related to medication use and inadequate for fruit/vegetable consumption, blood sugar testing and physical exercise. The correct use of medications was correlated to marital status. Regarding inadequate behaviors, there were associations of fruit/vegetable consumption with skin color and place of residence and blood sugar testing with marital status and inverse correlations of physical exercise with systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, waist circumference and postprandial glycemia. Conclusion: The results of this research contribute by strengthening the line of care in chronic diseases and assist in divulging the importance of supported self-care. Implications for practice: The findings of this research provided information relevant to the planning of care.

Background. The mortality and prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) vary across racial/ethnic groups with African Americans/blacks being disproportionately affected. However, it is unclear to what extent such disparities persist after the adjustment for covariates related to race/ethnicity and/or DM in the population. We aimed to assess racial/ethnic disparities in DM and to determine which covariates account for the observed racial/ethnic variabilities. Materials and Methods. We utilized a large cross-sectional survey of the US noninstitutionalized residents (n=30,852) to investigate the racial/ethnic disparities in diabetes mellitus, and the degree in which the disparities are explained by the relevant covariates. Pearson’s chi-square was used to examine study variables by race/ethnicity, while logistic regression was used to assess the effect of race/ethnicity and other covariates on DM prevalence. Results. There were statistically significant ethnic/racial differences with respect to income, education, marital status, smoking, alcohol, physical activities, body mass index, and age, P<0.05, but not insurance coverage, P>0.05. Race/ethnicity was a single independent predictor of DM, with African Americans (non-Hispanic blacks) more likely to be diagnosed for DM compared with non-Hispanic whites, prevalence odds ratio (POR) 1.45, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.30–1.62, while Hispanics were less likely to be diagnosed, POR = 0.98, 95% CI 0.87–1.09. Similarly, after controlling for potential confounders, the racial/ethnic variability in DM between AA/blacks and non-Hispanic whites persisted, adjusted POR = 1.30, 95% CI 1.15–1.47. Conclusions. Racial/ethnic variability exists in DM prevalence and is unexplained by racial/ethnic variance in education, income, marital status, smoking, alcohol, physical activities, age, and sex.
