Cytokinins can cause de-etiolation of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. seedlings growing in the dark. Brassinosteroids (BRs) have been considered to regulate negatively the de-etiolation in dark-grown Arabidopsis seedlings. We show here that epi-brassinolide (epi-BL) can partially produce the phenotype of de-etiolation as caused by treatment with cytokinins in the dark, including the development of leaves and epicotyls in the wild-type and the BR-deficient mutant det2. But BRs cannot inhibit hypocotyl elongation, nor restore all the inhibition caused by cytokinins and light. We have found that there are distinct short term and long term phases of induction of de-etiolation by cytokinins. The short-term effect is probably coupled to ethylene in the inhibition of the hypocotyl elongation; the long-term effect causes morphogenesis of leaves and epicotyls. BRs can only regulate de-etiolation in the long term. We propose that the inhibition of hypocotyl elongation of det2 in darkness is caused by the absence of BR-dependent elongation rather than the inhibition caused by the expression of genes for photomorphogenesis. We propose that BRs resemble cytokinins in regulating de-etiolation as positive regulators, and that the inhibition of hypocotyl elongation and the development of leaves and epicotyls in de-etiolation are independent processes.

Catecholamines are known to have short-term regulatory effects on fat cell hexose uptake. We examined the long-term effects of catecholamines on the insulin-sensitive 2-deoxyglucose (dGlc) uptake in cultured 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Prolonged exposure (48 h) to isoproterenol (beta-adrenergic agonist) stimulated the basal dGlc uptake up to 90%. The effect was specific, time, concentration, and protein synthesis dependent and reversible. The effect of insulin was unaltered and superimposed on the increase in basal dGlc uptake. The long-term effect of isoproterenol was mimicked by epinephrine, dibutyryl cAMP (DBcAMP), and 1-methyl-3-isobutylxanthine (IBMX). By contrast, short-term exposure to isoproterenol (and epinephrine) induced a protein synthesis-independent increase in basal dGlc uptake (30%) not accompanied by an increase in insulin responsiveness. Moreover, on short-term basis, DBcAMP and IBMX suppressed both the basal and insulin-stimulated uptake up to 50%. Determination of the intracellular nonphosphorylated dGlc during the uptake and of the hexokinase activity revealed that the long-term effect of isoproterenol was most likely due to alterations low in dGlc transport. In conclusion, long-term regulators of hexose uptake are in cultured 3T3-L1 adipocytes, isoproterenol, and other cAMP stimulators. The long-term effect is independent from the short-term regulatory effect of the agents and from the effect of insulin.

While the relation between terrorism and tourism has been an important topic for tourism research, the questions whether terrorism affects tourism immediately and how long after a terrorism event tourism recovers are, as yet, not clearly answered. The aim of this article is to better understand the magnitude and temporal scale of the impact of terrorism on tourism. To this end, a research model differentiating between short-term and long-term effects of terrorism on tourism is developed and analyzed for the destination Israel using data on tourists from Germany. The results show both short-term and long-term impacts with a time lag between the terrorist event and the beginning of tourism decline of 1 or up to 6 months. An economic influence on the development of tourist arrivals was not detected, but seasonality plays an important role in the relationship between terrorism and tourism.

Abstract Decreased post-operative cerebral region oxygenation saturation (crSO2) variability, a surrogate for cerebral autoregulation, correlates with poor neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates who undergo cardiac surgery. The goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between pre- and post-operative crSO2 variability in neonates requiring neonatal cardiac surgery for congenital heart disease (CHD). The variability of averaged 1-min crSO2 values was calculated for a minimum of 12h before and for the first 48h following cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary by-pass in neonates between November 2019 and May 2021. The crSO2 variability increased by 9% with each additional postnatal day in the pre-operative monitoring period (p=0.009). There was a 40% decrease in crSO2 variability between the pre-and post-operative monitoring periods (p<0.001). There were no associations between the degree of decrease in crSO2 variability and CHD classification (aortic arch obstruction or single ventricle physiology). The crSO2 variability improves with each additional postnatal day but then decreases by almost half following cardiac surgery in neonates. We did not observe any association between pre-operative crSO2 variability and post-operative ventilator-free days, post-operative ICU days, or mortality. The long-term effects or significance of reduced crSO2 require further exploration.

Warren ripping and poisoning were used to control rabbits on the flood-out plain of a major creek system on Manunda Station, a sheep-grazing property near Yunta in semi-arid South Australia. Rabbit numbers were initially reduced by >99 per cent, as indicated by the number of active entrances remaining in rabbit warrens. After nearly 10 years without follow-up control work, ripped warrens had only two per cent of the pre-control number of active entrances. Poisoning effectively reduced rabbit numbers in the short-term, but had no long-term effect on the number of active entrances, either in ripped or unripped warrens. Perennial shrubs regenerated on and around ripped warrens. Warren ripping on this part of Manunda is a cost-effective management option.

AbstractA number of studies have found that humor has a positive short-term effect in terms of enhancing creativity, but few have examined its long-term effects, and few have considered different personality traits when exploring this connection. The present study seeks to address this gap by examining the relationship between creativity and dispositions towards ridicule and being laughed at. We conceptualized humor-induced mirth as a positive emotion within the framework of broaden-and-build theory (Fredrickson 1998), with the potential to foster an individual's disposition towards creative behavior. We hypothesized that this potential would depend on different dispositions towards ridicule and being laughed at. Path analysis was then used to explore the impact of gelotophobia, gelotophilia and katagelasticism on creative performance, with creative disposition as a mediating variable. Gelotophobia, the fear of being laughed at, was found to correlate negatively with creative disposition, and may also exert an indirect negative influence on creative performance through its association with creative disposition. Gelotophilia, the joy of being laughed at, on the other hand, appears to have a partially mediated influence on creativity, exhibiting both a direct and an indirect positive relation through its positive association with creative disposition. No significant relation was observed between katagelasticism (the joy of laughing at others) and creativity.

Cognitive ability is an important aspect of children’s development, but there is still room for discussion about the impact of preschool education on children’s cognitive ability. Based on the data of China Urbanization and Children Development Survey (CUCDS) of Tsinghua University, this paper categorizes cognitive ability into Chinese language cognition and mathematical cognition. It is discovered that the impact of preschool education on children’s cognitive development differs depending on the cognitive ability and the length of time. In particular, preschool education has both short-term and long-term effects on children’s Chinese cognitive ability, while there is only a short-term effect on the development of children’s mathematical cognitive ability without long-term effect.

In recent years, the global temperature is continuously rising and has the trend of accelerating. The frequent occurrence of extremely high temperatures and heat waves has caused widespread concern from all walks of life. How to fully understand the change law of temperature becomes very important. In view of the temperature change in Xi’an, this paper introduces a new method called visibility graph to establish the temperature network in Xi’an. On this basis, firstly, this paper studies the relationship between temperature fluctuation and network degree. We find that short-term fluctuations do not cause long-term effects. Then, through the study of network degree distribution, it is revealed that the temperature network conforms to the law of power-law distribution. In addition, this paper also completes the community detection of temperature network, and finds that some communities have fewer nodes (between June and August), which means that the correlation between summer temperature and other seasons in Xi’an is low, and it is easy to form extreme weather. To sum up, the research in this paper provides a new theoretical method and research ideas for mining and mastering the variation law of temperature in Xi’an.

BackgroundPulmonary rehabilitation (PR) causes short-term improvement in exercise capacity, dyspnea, and health-related quality of life in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF); however, long-term maintenance of the improvement is difficult. Nintedanib, an antifibrotic drug, has been shown to delay the worsening of pulmonary function in IPF. Therefore, the concomitant use of nintedanib with PR is anticipated to contribute to the long-term maintenance of the PR effects. The long-term effect of PR under nintedanib treatment in IPF (FITNESS) study is a multicenter, randomised, prospective, parallel-group, open-label trial.MethodsThe study will enroll 82 patients with IPF who have been treated with nintedanib. Patients in the PR group will receive a programmed short-term induction PR program, followed by a maintenance home-based PR program, while patients in the control group will receive usual outpatient care. Patients in both groups will continue to receive nintedanib treatment throughout the study period. The primary endpoint of the study is to compare the change in the 6-min walk distance from the baseline to 12-months between the PR and control groups. The main secondary endpoint is endurance exercise time, measured using a bicycle ergometer.DiscussionFITNESS is the first randomised controlled study to evaluate the long-term effects of PR in IPF treated with nintedanib. This study will address the hypothesis that concomitant use of nintedanib contributes to the maintenance of long-term effects of PR, thus leading to a comprehensive therapeutic approach of “nintedanib and PR” in the antifibrotic era.
