The aim of this study was to prove that Arabica coffee introgressed with C. liberica, have resistance to Meloidogyne paranaensis (Mp). Open pollinated fruits were harvested from mother plants of 29 Arabica coffee genotypes from the IAPAR germplasm bank. Seeds were collected from the fruits and were sown to obtain seedlings to test the resistance to Mp. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design with 29 coffee genotypes, 8 replications, and one plant per plot. Cultivars Catuaí Vermelho IAC 99 and IPR 100 were used as susceptible and resistant checks, respectively. Seedlings with three to four pairs of leaves were inoculated with 1,400 eggs and juveniles J2 of Mp (IP). At 120 days after inoculation, seedlings were evaluated by counting the nematodes per gram of roots, and the final nematodes population was obtained (FP). The reproduction factor (RF) was calculated using the formula: RF = FP/IP. The reproduction factor reduction was used to classify the resistance levels of genotypes, which were classified as highly resistant (HR), resistant (R), moderately resistant (MR), moderately susceptible (MS), susceptible (S) an highly susceptible (HS). All genotypes differed from Catuaí in resistance factor (RF), five of which did not differ from IPR 100 for RF, and only the line IAPAR 15242 had RF < 1.0. Out of 28 Arabica genotypes introgressed with C. liberica, five HR, 11 R, 11 MR and one MS were identified. However, only IAPAR 15242 and IPR 100 were classified as HR and presented 100% of HR plants, but only the first showed an RF < 1.0. Results revealed that these Arabica coffee genotypes with introgression of C. liberica genes have great potential to be used in breeding programs and they are a new alternative as a source of resistance.

The aim of this study was to prove that Híbrido de Timor (HdT) accessions are resistance sources to Meloidogyne paranaensis. Two experiments were carried out in a greenhouse at IDR-Paraná (Londrina, Paraná State, Brazil). Open pollinated fruits were harvested from 10 accessions (HdT UFV 380-05, HdT UFV 408-10, HdT UFV 408-11, HdT UFV 408-28, HdT UFV 428-04, HdT UFV 439-14, HdT UFV 443-08, HdT UFV 445-70, HdT UFV 446-138, HdT UFV 448-75) from the EPAMIG/ UFV germplasm bank. Seeds of these accessions were sown to obtain seedlings to test the resistance to M. paranaensis. For each experiment, a completely randomized design was used with 11 treatments, eight replications and one plant per plot. Cultivar Mundo Novo IAC 376-4 was the susceptible check. Seedlings with three to four pairs of leaves were transplanted into plastic cups with a capacity of 700 mL and 1200 eggs. The J2 of M. paranaensis (IP) were inoculated after one month. The assessments were performed 134 days after inoculation, when the data of the number of eggs and J2 per gram of roots and the final population of nematodes (FP) were obtained. The reproduction factor (RF) was calculated using the formula: RF = IP / FP. To classify the resistance levels of the genotypes, the reproduction factor reduction (RFR) was used. It classified the levels from highly resistant to highly susceptible. Different levels of intermediate resistance between the accesses were observed, highlighting HdT UFV 408-28 that presented moderate resistance to M. paranaensis. HdT UFV 408-28 showed a high percentage of plants with intermediate resistance, which can be used in breeding programs aimed at resistance to M. paranaensis

The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance of Ethiopian Coffea arabica from IAPAR’s germplasm bank to Meloidogyne paranaensis. A completely randomized design was used with 15 treatments, eight replications and one plant per plot. 14 accessions of C. arabica from Ethiopia were evaluated and the cultivar Mundo Novo IAC 376-4 was used as a susceptible control. To classify the resistance levels of the genotypes, the reduction of the reproduction factor (RRF) was used. The Ethiopian accessions were classified from highly resistant to highly susceptible. Most of the Ethiopian coffees were highly resistant to M. paranaensis. The genotype Geisha also showed resistance, but is still in heterozygous condition.

ABSTRACT The production of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) may be compromised by a variety of pests and diseases, with root-knot nematodes standing out among the soil-borne pathogens that cause significant losses. It was assessed the reaction of common bean genotypes to the reproduction of these nematodes, with emphasis on the two species most frequently found parasitizing the crop: Meloidogyne javanica and Meloidogne incognita. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, using a completely randomized design, with 26 treatments (genotypes), ten replications and plot consisting of a pot containing one plant. Each plot was inoculated with 1,000 eggs and second-stage juveniles and assessed at 62 days after the inoculation, when the final populations were estimated. The genotypic resistance was determined based on two criteria: reproduction factor and index. All the genotypes were susceptible to M. incognita according to both assessment criteria. The IAC Alvorada, IAC Imperador, BRS Esplendor and BRS Esteio cultivars, although may be classified as resistant to M. javanica by the reproduction factor, are classified only as moderately resistant if the assessment criterion is the reproduction index.

ABSTRACT Melon is one of the most economically important crops cultivated in Brazil, especially in the Northeast region. However, as its cultivation increases, phytosanitary problems arise, including those caused by nematodes, which are most effectively controlled using resistant cultivars. This study aimed at assessing the reaction of muskmelon genotypes, in terms of resistance to Meloidogyne incognita and M. javanica infestation. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions using a completely randomized design, in a 2 x 15 factorial scheme, with six replications. A total of 15 muskmelon genotypes were evaluated and the 'Santa Cruz Kada' tomato was used as a susceptible control. The total number of eggs and juvenile nematodes in the roots and the reproduction factor were used to assess the genotype reaction. None of the genotypes was resistant to M. incognita. Eight genotypes were classified as resistant to M. javanica and promising for use in melon breeding programs.

Abstract: Angico is a species found in several environments in Brazil, with several applications. It is used in the timber industry and mainly in folk medicine. In order to verify a variation in the biometric characteristics and the quality of seeds from different mother-plants in different harvesting years, the following variables were studied: moisture content, diameter, density, electrical conductivity, fresh and dry matter of seedlings, germination percentage and kinetics, in a completely randomized design with a 2x3 factorial arrangement (lots x size). The obtained results showed that angico seeds from different lots showed different physiological quality, possibly due to the climate variations to which mother-plants were submitted in the different years. Seed size directly interferes with seedling growth under both controlled and greenhouse conditions, and it can be used as a vigor indicator for angico seeds.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this paper was to evaluate the effects of different honey concentrations in culture media, in comparison to sucrose medium, for the in vitro development of the epiphytic Encyclea cordigera orchid, in order to improve the process of propagation of the species. The in vitro germination was prepared on a reduced Murashige & Skoog (MS) medium. After 90 days, the seedlings were divided into different treatments, where they remained for another 90 days. Six treatments were set up (30g L-1 of sucrose; 15, 30, 45, and 60g L-1 of honey; and absence of any carbohydrates) in a completely randomized design. Plants were removed from the vials 270 days after the start of the experiment, and the number of roots, length of the largest leaf, length of the longest root, number of leaves, and fresh and dry masses were evaluated. Data concerning the number of leaves and roots were (x+1)1/2 transformed and subjected to an analysis of variance (ANOVA); the means were compared by a Tukey's test set at 5% probability. Medium containing 60g L-1 of honey proved to be superior to the sucrose medium traditionally used, favoring the in vitro growth and development of Encyclea cordigera. This medium can therefore be recommended for the propagation of this species, which is usually cultivated as an ornamental plant.

The application of Trichoderma fungus can be used to obtain seedlings of higher quality for plantations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of Trichoderma isolates on the germination and initial growth of açaí seedlings. Two trials were set up. In the laboratory, the seeds were inoculated in suspensions prepared with each of the isolates for 24 h, and they were arranged in trays containing filter paper in a completely randomized design with five replicates containing 50 seeds each. For the control, the seeds were submerged only in water. Part of the seedlings resulting from seeds treated and not treated with Trichoderma were transferred to bags containing forest soil and were submitted to seven modes of application of Trichoderma and kept in a nursery. The speed of germination and hypocotyl were not influenced by the biological treatment. The application of the different Trichoderma isolates positively influenced the height, collar diameter, number of leaves, root size, leaf area and root, and aerial part dry mass of the açaí seedlings. The application of the Trichoderma isolate TAM01 on the preplanting substrate and biweekly applications on the postplanting substrate was the combination that most positively influenced the development of açai seedlings.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the damage caused by Meloidogyne enterolobii in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) and to verify the reliability of the reproduction factor as a suitable measure for selecting resistant okra genotypes. Increasing populations of M. enterolobii - 0, 500, 1,500, 3,000, 5,000, and 7,000 eggs and second-stage juveniles (J2) per plant, - were evaluated, in a completely randomized design. The pathogen showed a parasitism pattern similar to that of M. incognita, causing a significant decrease in morphological and agronomic traits. The pathogen reproduction factor should be used in the selection of okra genotypes for tolerance to M. enterolobii, in populations above 3,000 eggs or J2.

Root-knot nematodes negatively impact on coffee yield worldwide. The use of resistant cultivars is the most effective way to manage these pests. The goal of this study was to identify Coffea arabica genotypes with resistance to Meloidogyne paranaensis and M. incognita race 1. Eighteen C. arabica genotypes (EPAMIG’s Germplasm Bank), previously selected for poor host suitability in a M. paranaensis-infested field, plus a resistant and a susceptible standard, were inoculated with these two Meloidogyne species to determine their resistance using nematode reproduction factor (). Accessions for which were considered resistant, while those for which were considered moderately resistant or susceptible, also according to statistical analysis. Five accessions from crossing ‘Catuaí Vermelho’ × ‘Amphillo MR 2-161’, one from ‘Catuaí Vermelho’ × ‘Amphillo MR 2-474’, two from ‘Timor Hybrid (UFV 408-01)’ and the standard ‘IPR-100’ were resistant to M. incognita race 1 with . Four accessions from ‘Catuaí Vermelho’ × ‘Amphillo MR 2-161’, one from ‘Timor Hybrid (UFV 408-01)’, one from ‘Catuaí Vermelho’ × ‘Amphillo MR 2-474’ and the resistant standard ‘IPR100’ were resistant to M. paranaensis (). Field evaluations with parental genotypes showed that plants that originated from progenies ‘Catuaí Vermelho’ × ‘Amphillo MR 2-161’ were resistant to M. paranaensis and also gave a good yield compared to commercial cultivars, showing promising agronomic traits that can be used in breeding programmes to develop new cultivars of C. arabica.
