The objective is to present risky sexual behaviors that can lead to contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In San Luis Potosí, Mexico, a universe of 77 men with active sexual life was studied; a self-administered questionnaire with four sections was applied: initiation of sexual intercourse, sexually transmitted diseases, preventive actions and number of sexual partners. To measure sexual behavior, two scales were designed, an ordinal one to observe different levels, a nominal one for the presence or absence of risky sexual behaviors. Some results obtained show that 87.1% had their first sexual intercourse at age 18 or earlier, 53.2% always used condoms, 93.5% had their first sexual intercourse with women and 6.5% with men, and 63.7% engaged in risky sexual behavior. One of the conclusions is that the majority of males in this study engaged in one or more risky sexual behaviors that can lead to contracting HPV and other sexually transmitted diseases

Background. The debate on whether participation in sports enhances or curtails risky sexual behavior among athletes continues. The purpose of the study was to establish the sexual behavior patterns and associated high risks among University student-athletes. Methods. A cross-sectional survey research design was used to collect self-report data on sexual behaviors from university student-athletes (n = 151) who participated in a University sports tournament. Descriptive statistics of frequencies and proportions and inferential statistics of chi-square test of independent measures were used to analyze the data. Majority (65%) of the student-athletes were taking part in Ball games and Racket games (13.9%). Results. About a third (33%) of the student-athletes had their first sexual debut while aged between 18 and 20 years, 60% had regular sexual partners, over 30% had more than one sexual partner and 67% would have sexual intercourse with strangers; only 58% of these would seek the sexual history of the strangers. More than half (55%) of the student-athletes frequently used condoms to prevent pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, but only 39% of them always used condoms with their sexual partners in the last six months. The participants’ sexual behaviors differed significantly (p < .05) by their gender. Males tended to start having sexual intercourse earlier (p < .002), had more than one sexual partner (p < 0.001) and would always use condoms (p < .001) than females, but more females than males would have sexual intercourse with a stranger (p < .001). Conclusions. Kenyan University student-athletes are sexually active and are faced with high risk sexual behaviors like multiple sexual partners and sexual intercourse with strangers. The difference in patterns of sexual behavior between male and female student-athletes calls for gender specific interventions by programmers, policy makers and health workers. Keywords:  sexual behaviors, student-athletes, sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s).

This paper looked into the abuse of inhalable nitrites, mainly amyl nitrites, commonly known by the street name of poppers. This paper compiled several studies of nitrite inhalant abuse and the risk associated with the sexual practices that may concur. The paper explores first, the history and true intentions of nitrite inhalants, then the increasing abuse mainly within the homosexual community, and the legitimacy of the link of nitrites and the HIV/AIDS epidemic.  Various studies discussed in the paper will show that there is no legitimate link between poppers increasing the chance of HIV/AIDS but it is the unsafe sexual practices that occur with poppers that lead to various sexually transmitted diseases. The dangers of inhalable nitrites come from legal loopholes, use with other drugs such as Viagra, and the nature of unsafe sexual practices mostly within the homosexual community.

A sample of 105 hours of network daytime soap opera programming from 1989–90 was analyzed for depictions of sexual behaviors, safe sex, and pregnancy. The content analysis indicated occurrences of sexual behaviors were slightly lower than previous studies showed. A few discussions about safe sex (prevention of pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and AIDS) were found. Because these discussions of sexual health issues were not found in previous content analyses, soap opera programming may be beginning to reflect a trend toward more responsible portrayals of sexual behavior. Although most characters engaged in these activities were Caucasian, in their thirties, and not married to each other, the occurrences of married partners in these depictions were increasing.

Fisherfolks participate in unsafe sexual behaviors which can predispose them to HIV infection. This research was designed to assess the effects of training on HIV/AIDS-related knowledge and sexual behavior among fisherfolks in two fishing communities in Nigeria. Respondents were allocated into Experimental Group (EG, n = 103) and Control Group (CG, n = 105). Data were collected at baseline using a questionnaire which included questions on socio-demographic characteristics, sexual behavior among others. A 3-day HIV/AIDS training was conducted for EG. Fisherfolks in EG and CG with good knowledge were 16.5% and 54.3%, respectively at baseline. The number increased to 100.0% in EG than CG (60%) at follow-up. At baseline, fisherfolks in EG and CG with high riskperception scores were 26.2% and 59.0%, respectively; corresponding figures at post intervention for EG and CG were 100.0% and 70.0% respectively. Training increased HIV/AIDS knowledge, improved risk perception and reduced risky sexual practices among fisherfolks.

BACKGROUND: Sexually Transmitted Diseases are still considered a serious public health problem in Brazil and worldwide.OBJECTIVE: To examine Sexually Transmitted Diseases prevalence and the sickness impact profile of STDs in a reference health center specializing in the treatment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases.METHOD: We collected epidemiological, demographic, clinical and laboratory data from the medical records and interviews of 4,128 patients who had attended the center from January 1999 to December 2009.RESULTS: Male patients outnumbered (76%) females (24%), Caucasians outnumbered (74.3%) those of mixed race (14.8%), blacks (10.8%) and Asians (0.1%). STD occurrence was higher in the 20-29 age group (46.2%) This population included 34.7% high school graduates, 8.7% college graduates and 0.8% illiterates. As for affective-sexual orientation, 86.5% were heterosexual, 7.8% homosexual and 5.5% bisexual. Regarding patients' sexual practices over the previous 30 days, 67.7% reported sexual intercourse with one person, 8.6% had had sex with two persons and 3.9%, with three or more people. The highest incidence of STD was condyloma acuminata, affecting 29.4% of all the patients, genital candidiasis 14.2%, and genital herpes 10.6%. Of the 44.3% who submitted to serologic testing for HIV detection 5% were positive, with a ratio of 6.8 males to 1 female.CONCLUSIONS:STD prevalence remains high in Brazil and it is necessary to invest in early detection, prevention and treatment.
