Abstract: Indonesia's position in the global competition for the halal food industry is not yet at the top competitive position. However, there is a significant change in the position of the competitiveness. The change can be seen from the Global Islamic Economy Indicator report for 2020/2021, which positions Indonesia at number 4 (fourth) in the halal food industry. Previously, Indonesia had never been in the top 10 positions. Since Indonesia is the first country ranked in halal consumption, the new ranking position is an achievement. The high competitiveness position during the COVID-19 pandemic also becomes an obstacle to make Indonesia a World Halal Center in 2024. This study aims to discuss an in-depth analysis of the implementation of halal value chain policies in Indonesia and the impact of implementing these policies on the export competitiveness of the Indonesian halal food industry. This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological type through data collection by interviewing export business actors in the halal food industry. The experiences of some informants are the key to answers the objectives of this study. This research produces the first halal value chain policy stated in the Halal Product Guarantee Law No. 33 of 2014, which requires all food entrepreneurs to carry out halal certification. The halal value chain in Indonesia applies the principle of traceability which makes Indonesian halal food products competitive. The second application of the principle of traceability is different from other countries, making halal food products produced by Indonesia acceptable to importing countries, especially OIC countries.Abstrak: Posisi Indonesia dalam persaingan global industri makanan halal belum berada pada posisi kompetitif teratas. Namun, ada perubahan signifikan dalam posisi daya saing. Perubahan tersebut terlihat dari laporan Global Islamic Economy Indicator 2020/2021 yang menempatkan Indonesia pada peringkat 4 (empat) dalam industri makanan halal. Sebelumnya, Indonesia belum pernah berada di posisi 10 besar. Karena Indonesia adalah negara pertama yang menempati peringkat pertama dalam konsumsi halal, posisi peringkat baru tersebut merupakan sebuah pencapaian. Posisi daya saing yang tinggi di masa pandemi COVID-19 juga menjadi kendala untuk menjadikan Indonesia sebagai World Halal Center pada tahun 2024. kebijakan daya saing ekspor industri makanan halal Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan tipe fenomenologis melalui pengumpulan data dengan mewawancarai pelaku usaha ekspor pada industri makanan halal. Pengalaman beberapa informan menjadi kunci untuk menjawab tujuan penelitian ini. Penelitian ini menghasilkan kebijakan rantai nilai halal pertama yang tertuang dalam Undang-Undang Jaminan Produk Halal Nomor 33 Tahun 2014, yang mewajibkan semua pengusaha makanan untuk melakukan sertifikasi halal. Rantai nilai halal di Indonesia menerapkan prinsip ketertelusuran yang membuat produk makanan halal Indonesia berdaya saing. Penerapan kedua prinsip ketertelusuran berbeda dengan negara lain, menjadikan produk pangan halal produksi Indonesia dapat diterima oleh negara pengimpor khususnya negara OKI.

The halal product industry continues to grow and has a big influence on the global market. In fact, Indonesia is determined to make the country's halal product industry more competitive in the world halal market. To anticipate this global market competition, Indonesia as a Muslim majority country must be able to take the advantage of this enormous opportunity. The role of the network in developing halal products to the global market was when marketing its products. PT. Mitratani could not be separated from relationships with business partners. Each business partner had a role to play. Also, PT. Mitratani could not separate the use of information technology and media as a means to expand marketing to the global market. To create an edge in competition, PT. Mitratani focused on customer and consumer needs. The most important thing was to build trust in business partners. PT. Mitratani's advantage was in the cultivation of edamame. It was from planting to the use of pesticides and fertilizers, until PT Mitratani farmers did their own crops and carried out quality control on each land. This was done to maintain the quality of edamame. PT. Mitratani also improved the quality of its products by implementing HACCP, SOP and GMP in processing and production. In addition to maintaining the quality of PT, Mitratani had established good relationships with company stakeholders so that loyalty and trusted in the product and the company could continue.

This paper aims to find out how non-Muslim countries such as Japan and Germany develop the halal tourism industry and highlight the narratives of halal tourism in both non-Muslim countries. This study has been done qualitatively in focus on the literature review and discourse analysis method as the main approach. Over time, the halal label has been led to be an inseparable aspect of lifestyle segment in certain society. It did not occur only in the food industry, but also been penetrated into various other industries, one of those is known as halal tourism. According to Global Muslim Tourist Index (GMTI), this phenomenon is not only the Muslim countries Phenomenon, but also increase in the non-Muslim countries. The halal tourism business is expanding and start to be the main economical income by Muslim minority countries, including Japan and Germany. The presence of these two countries in developing halal tourism is unique, because it is not a country with a Muslim majority, but it is precisely the target of foreign Muslim tourists, including Indonesians. Although Indonesia has been named the best halal destination according to GMTI, in fact the interest in halal tourism developed by Japan and Germany is far more promising. No doubt this has become a challenge for Indonesia to enter the this global market competition. Therefore, compared to following the market trend with profit oriented, Indonesia as a Muslim-majority country should deliver halal tourism towards the target of justice and welfare of the people.Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk memahami wacana dan kepentingan yang mengiringi perkembangan wisata halal di Jepang dan Jerman, sebagai negara non-muslim. Hal ini dikarenakan, meskipun berstatus negara non-muslim, keduanya mengalami peningkatan yang cukup signifikan dalam hal pengembangan dan tingkat kedatangan turis muslim. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan teori hegemoni oleh Laclau dan Mouffe yang menekankan pada aspek logic of difference dan chain of equivalent sebagai kunci utama internalisasi wacana hegemonik, tulisan ini dimaksudkan untuk melihat beragam wacana dan kepentingan mengiringi perkembangan wisata halal, baik yang tersirat maupun tersurat. Untuk mancapai tujuan tersebut, metode pengumpulan data akan dilakukan dengan studi kepustakaan yang fokus pada beragam artikel, berita, serta laporan-laporan terkait perkembangan industri pariwisata halal di Jepang dan Jerman. Dari berbagai data dan analisa, tampak jelas bahwa meskipun ada beragam wacana dan kepentingan, perbedaan tersebut berada dalam wacana besar neoliberalisme. Sehingga, wisata halal di negara non-muslim dapat dipahami sebagai sebuah wacana hegemonik yang hanya menguntungkan negara dan pasar tetapi mengesampingkan masyarakat. Dengan belajar dari temuan tersebut, Indonesia sebagai negara dengan populasi muslim terbesar diharapkan mampu mengembangkan industri wisata halal yang ramah, bukan hanya kepada turis dan pemodal, melainkan juga pada masyarakat sebagai garda terdepan industri wisata halal.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the influence of religiosity (intrinsic and extrinsic) and halal literacy on the intention of Muslim consumers to purchase halal branded food products in India. An extended version of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) was used as a framework. Apart from religiosity and halal literacy, the influence of attitude, social norms and perceived behavioural control of halal on buying intention were also tested. Design/methodology/approach The study uses a survey design. The data were collected from 350 individual respondents, using a closed-ended, structured questionnaire. The quality of the measurement model has been assessed through reliability testing, factor loading, average variance extracted and Fornell-Larcker criterion. The test of hypotheses was conducted by performing the partial least square structural equation modelling. Findings The result of hypotheses testing shows that both intrinsic and extrinsic types of religiosities did not have a direct influence on buying intention. However, religiosity (extrinsic and intrinsic) and halal literacy have significant relationships with most of the antecedents of the intention of the TPB. In addition, both kinds of religiosities (extrinsic and intrinsic) and halal literacy had a significant indirect effect (through TPB antecedents) on buying intention. Originality/value Muslim population in India is one of the largest in the world, yet there is a lack of popular halal branded food products in the market. Nevertheless, few researchers have attempted to study the consumer behaviour of the Muslim population for halal products in India. A large amount of research work on halal food behaviour is from countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia, where the Muslim population is in the majority and halal brands are already popular. Further, this paper studies the impact of dimensions of religiosity, which has been overlooked by researchers studying the halal food purchasing behaviour. The study also explores the impact of halal literacy, an understudied construct in halal marketing literature. The present study is amongst the earliest empirical research based on Muslim consumers in India on the topic of halal branded food products.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyze the customer attitude on Halal food products and determine major factors that affect the attitudes towards Halal food products in Azerbaijan. Within the framework of this research, theory of planned behavior was applied and influence of subjective norms, religiosity level, availability of Halal certification and health considerations on attitude toward Halal food products was measured. Design/methodology/approach Random sampling technique was used during these studies. Within the framework of current research, the local Muslim population was surveyed. The sample size for current research was 636, and specified models were estimated using Eview by applying a robust least squares method. Findings The impact of subjective norms, religiosity level and availability of Halal certification and health considerations upon consumer’s attitude is economically and statistically significant. Empirical findings show that the strength of the association between religiosity level and attitude toward Halal food products is dependent on the level of religiosity and some other factors such as age category, gender status and existence of halal certification. Practical implications As a predominantly Muslim country, exploring attitudes toward Halal food products in Azerbaijan can serve as a valuable source of information while developing Halal branding strategy in this market, i.e. insights gaining from this research will guide marketers while tailoring their marketing strategy for efficiently targeting this market. Originality/value This is the first empirical research in Azerbaijani market devoted to understanding factors that influence Halal food purchase attitude.

With the increase in labor costs in China and the tremendous changes in the international trade environment, upgrading the total factor productivity of Chinese furniture export enterprises faces a great challenge. Lots of studies have explored the interaction of exports or misallocation on the total factor productivity (TFP) of furniture enterprises, however, there is little knowledge on the impact and interaction of both exports and misallocation on the TFP. Based on panel data of Chinese furniture enterprises, this paper measures the TFP and the distortion of labor and capital resources in Chinese furniture enterprises. A two-way fixed-effects model is used to analyze the impact of exports and misallocation on the TFP of Chinese furniture enterprises. The paper reveals several important findings. First, the TFP of Chinese furniture export enterprises is lower than that of non-export enterprises, this phenomenon is called the “export–productivity paradox”. Chinese furniture export enterprises are processing trade-oriented and labor-intensive enterprises at the low end of the value chain, exports have a negative effect on improving the TFP of furniture enterprises in the short term. Second, the distortion of labor and capital resources in Chinese furniture enterprises promotes improvements to the TFP of furniture enterprises rather than reducing the TFP of furniture enterprises. Last but not the least, we find that misallocation has a positive moderating effect on exports and can weaken the negative impact of exports on TFP by the “forced mechanism”, which is that the higher the distortion of the misallocation, the higher the cost of acquiring capital and labor, and enterprises are forced to enhance their productivity when facing market competition, thus promoting improvements to the TFP of furniture enterprises.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the understanding of halal concept among food production workers and to develop a generic Halal Control Point (HCP) Plan for the manufacturing of processed foods. Design/methodology/approach A mixed-method (interviews, surveys and microbiological analyses) approach was used to analyze the hygiene and halal practices of four food processing plants in Penang, Malaysia. In total, 200 food production workers were surveyed (and quality assurance staff were interviewed) to determine their understanding of halal concepts and attitude towards halal food products. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) swabbing tests were conducted to determine the hygiene of workers and food contact surfaces. End products were sampled and enumerated for total bacterial count. Findings The swabbing tests of food contact surfaces (i.e. tabletops) showed that only Company C (oat) and Company D (coffee powder) passed the ATP hygiene test (= 10 reflective light units [RLU]). The results obtained from all workers’ hands and aprons indicated a 100 per cent failure rate (>30 RLU). No ATP was detected on the packaging materials from all companies. The microbiological findings indicated that the end products are satisfactory and were below detection limits as verified by the enumeration done on the food samples. Besides, from the interview sessions conducted with the quality assurance staff, one generic Halal Control Points (HCPs) plan and four specific HCP plan tables were developed for the manufacturing process of halal food products for each company. Originality/value The HCP plans will be of value for food industry seeking to identify potential point sources of haram contamination and halal control points for their food production processes.

Value chain governance (VCG) strategies have important marketing implications for specific wine and agri-food products that used GIs in Italy and UK. There are many challenges surrounding the prevailing trend or movement towards the adoption of exclusive quality standards and distinctions in the global supply chains of agri-food products, including wines to support the conception of traceability and safety assurances. This article aimed to reviewing previous research that could be relevant to the analysis of governance mechanisms in supply chains related to GIs for these products. The study analyzed how other researchers coped with these research issues. The survey was qualitative in nature, and recapped selected case studies from Italy and UK, regarding the VCG of wine and food products GIs. Therefore, the findings were limited only to the impact of VCG, wine and food production in these areas and could not be generalized beyond them. The article contributes in advancing knowledge and transferring it from existing situations in developed countries or markets to the developing ones.

Aim/Purpose: The study attempts to analyse the influences of knowledge management capacity on company performance and supply chain practices. It also examines whether supply chain practices significantly and positively impact company performance. Background: Knowledge management capacity is an essential tactical resource that enables the integration and coordination among supply chain stakeholders, but research examining the link between knowledge management capacity and supply chain practices and their impacts on company performance remains scarce. Methodology: The study uses correlation analysis and factor analysis to confirm the theoretical framework’s validity and structural equation modelling to test hypotheses. The data are obtained from 115 halal food firms in China (with a response rate of 82.7%). Contribution: This study’s findings contribute to the Social Capital Theory by presenting the impacts of different supply chain practices on company performance. The findings also suggest the impact of intangible resources on enhancing company performance, contributing to the Resource-based View Theory. These results are a crucial contribution to both academicians and corporate managers working in the Halal food industry. Managers can apply these findings to discover and adopt knowledge management capacity with practical anticipation that these concepts will align with their company strategies. Also, the research motivates managers to concentrate their knowledge management on enhancing companies’ supply chain practices to achieve improved company performance. Findings: This study is an initial effort that provides empirical evidence regarding the relationships among supply chain, knowledge management, and company performance from the perspective of China’s halal food industry. The results prove that knowledge management capacity is the supply chains’ primary success determinant and influencer. Besides, knowledge management capacity positively influences company performance, and supply chain practices directly influence company performance. Recommendations for Practitioners: Managers can apply these study findings to determine and increase knowledge management capacity with practical anticipation that these concepts will align with their company strategies. Also, the research motivates managers to concentrate their knowledge management on enhancing companies’ supply chain practices to achieve improved company performance. Recommendation for Researchers: The study presents a new theoretical framework and empirical evidence for surveying halal food businesses in China. Impact on Society: These results are a significant contribution to the research field and industry focusing on halal foods. Future Research: First, this research focuses only on halal food businesses in China; thus, it is essential to re-examine the hypothesized relations between the constructs in other Chinese business segments and regions. Next, the effect of variables and practices on the theorized framework should be taken into account and examined in other industries and nations.

As a result of increased consumer awareness, demand for healthier food products is increasing day by day. Consumers seek healthier versions of food products which they relate to reduced presence of unhealthy components or increased presence of healthy ones. As a result, the food industry has not only increased the variety of products available but also uses nutritional claims to signal the presence of more substances. As an average consumer at the supermarket devotes just a few seconds to selecting each product, they are only able or willing to process that information that immediately attracts their attention or that is felt to be more important to them. This paper analyses how consumers rank different nutritional claims for two processed cereal products. Five claims were chosen to reflect the current market landscape of availability, and that relates to both “healthy” (i.e., fiber) and “unhealthy” (i.e., fat) substances. We use a direct ranking preference method with data from a survey conducted with consumers in a Spanish region in 2017. Results show that the ranking of claims differs between the two products (biscuits and pastries) and across consumers. However, consumers prefer those that show reduced presence of unhealthy substances above those that highlight the presence of healthy ones. Therefore, policy to maximize the impact of nutritional labelling should be product-specific.

Purpose Much has been written about the importance of external integration for the integrity of food products. To achieve food integrity, all actors along the supply chain have to be fully integrated and comply with an assurance system or process. The more complex the supply chain operations are, the greater will be the need for integration. This research paper investigates the impact of external integration on compliance with halal standards, as an example of product integrity within the food industry. Design/methodology/approach A survey of 1,000 food manufacturers was conducted. Partial least squares structural equation modelling was used to test the effect of external integration on compliance with halal standards. Findings The results showed that there were links between halal assurance system and external integration. Nevertheless, it was discovered that only customer integration mediated the relationship between the halal assurance system and product quality and production cost. Practical implications The practical implications of the findings extend to managers in the food industry who might pursue supply chain integration as a structure to achieve excellence. The findings suggested that the deployment of a halal assurance system has a positive effect on operational performance. Furthermore, the results show that managers who wish to implement the halal assurance system should carefully invest in an external integration strategy, depending upon the operational performance improvement intended. Originality/value This research is one of the first studies to investigate the effects of external integration on halal food in general and is the first empirical investigation of the effect of safeguarding halal integrity on operational performance.
