This study aimed to examine the quality of broiler carcasses in the Banyuwangi traditional market with carcass quality examination based on SNI number 3924-2009 and tetracycline antibiotic residues test based on SNI number 7424:2008. A total of ten broiler chicken sellers as representative of almost all broiler chicken sellers in the Banyuwangi market, with each seller was taken for one carcass in this research. Carcass quality examination used a standart carcasses weight 1,0-1,3 kg. Carcass quality examination was carried out with descriptive analysis with reference to the physical characteristics of SNI (Standarisasi Nasional Indonesia). The bioassay method is used to test for tetracycline antibiotic residue. The result of the carcass quality examination showed that from the whole sample consisting of conformation, disjointed or broken bones and missing parts, discolorations, and cleanliness of broiler carcasses are good enough. The percentage quality of broiler carcasses quality I is 60%, quality II is 30% and quality III is 10%. The examination of antibiotic tetracycline residues in broiler meat showed negative results indicating that no feeds containing additional antibiotics made carcasses in the traditional Banyuwangi market safe for consumption.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of neem leaf infusion on growth parameters, carcass characteristics and meat quality of broiler chicken. One hundred and sixty, seven days old broiler chicks of cob strain were used for the experiment which was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD). Each group was sub-divided into four replicates of 10 birds. The chicks in group 1 served as control and antibiotics were administered to them while 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% concentration of neem leaf infusion were administered to bird on groups 2, 3 and 4, respectively. The period of experiment was six weeks. The birds were fed ad libitum. One bird close to average final weight was selected randomly in each replicate and was slaughtered at 42nd day of the experiment. Meat samples from breast muscle of the bird were subjected to cooking weight loss, refrigeration weight loss and sensory evaluation. The data obtained were subjected to one-way Analysis of Variance. Results revealed that there were no significant (p>0.05) effects of neem leaf infusion on weight gain and feed conversion ratio while water intake was influenced (p<0.05) at the starter phase across the treatment groups. It was only feed intake that was influenced (P<0.05) by the Neem leaf infusion (NLI) at the finisher phase. The heart was the only parameter that was significantly (p<0.05) affected among the carcass parameters. The cooking loss increased (P<0.05) with higher concentration of the infusion while refrigeration weight loss percentages were similar (P>0.05) across the treatments. The result on Sensory evaluation showed that only colour, tenderness and overall flavour were significantly (P<0.05) influenced. The study concluded that administration of aqueous Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf infusion in drinking water of broiler chicken as alternative to antibiotics did not pose any adverse threat on the performance and meat quality of broiler chicken.

The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of feeding system on the growth rate and carcass quality of crossbred Improved Jezersko-Solčava x Texel (JSRT) lambs and to evaluate the effect of sex on these traits. The trial was conducted in nature according to the traditional rearing systems. The trial included 44 crossbred lambs, which were born and reared until the slaughter in three different flocks. In the age of 10 days suckled lambs were offered with ad libitum corresponding diets according to the feeding system. All lambs were slaughtered in seven consecutive days by the same procedure. The effect of feeding system significantly affected daily gain from birth to slaughter, EUROP carcass conformation and shoulder width. Likewise, the effect of sex significantly affected daily gain from birth to slaughter and internal fatness of carcasses. According to carcass cuts the feeding system significantly affected only the proportion of neck and leg. Considering meat quality traits, feeding system had a significant effect on the pH 45 and CIE a* values. In this study, we could speculate that more than the feeding system the growth and the carcass traits as well as meat traits were affected by the amount of the supplement.

SUMMARY1. Seventy-two individually fed pigs on six treatments were used to determine the effects on performance and in particular on carcass quality of (a) giving quantities of liquid skim-milk (preserved with formalin) in excess of those normally recommended; (b) replacing meal by skim-milk in the ration on a calculated dry-matter basis (1 gal. skim-milk equivalent to 1 · 1 lb. meal) as compared with a calculated energy basis (1 gal. skim-milk equivalent to 1 · 3 lb. meal) and (c) giving skim-milk for only a part of the growing period instead of throughout. The experimental period continued from 9–10 weeks of age until slaughter at an average live-weight of 135 lb.2. Extensive carcass measurements were taken and in addition assessment of the carcasses was made by a representative of the County Quality Pork Association and by an expert pork butcher.3. Carcasses from pigs given an all-meal diet were comparable in all respects with those from pigs given skim-milk throughout up to a maximum of either 5¼ or 10½ pints per pig per day.4. Carcasses from pigs given the highest level of skim-milk (maximum of 15¾ pints per pig per day) were superior in many respects to those on any of the other treatments, but the possibility that this was due to their slower rate of growth rather than to the high level of milk per se, is discussed.5. Pigs given skim-milk as replacement of part of their meal allowance on a calculated dry matter basis grew significantly faster than those in which the replacement was made on a calculated energy basis or than those given an all-meal diet. The importance is stressed of ensuring that in assessing the value of skim-milk for pigs the caloric value of the rations being compared is similar. The need for experiments based on actual determinations of the caloric value of the rations used is also emphasised.6. While the performance of pigs given skim-milk up to 75 lb. live-weight only was similar to that of pigs given skim-milk throughout, evidence was obtained that the quality of their carcasses was slightly inferior.7. There was some suggestion that as the level of skim-milk in the diet increased an eye muscle of a rather paler colour was produced.
