Summary A useful approach for improving seed germination and seedling growth is a seed priming technique. Application of the priming technique enhances water absorption, causing activation of metabolic activities in the seed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of seed priming on germination parameters of safflower and to compare different priming techniques: priming by soaking and priming on filter paper. The priming treatments included hydropriming (distilled water) and osmopriming with 0.1% and 0.5% solutions of KNO3 for 8 and 16 hours. The experiment revealed significant difference between the priming treatments and the control. The highest germination (89.50%) was recorded within the priming treatments by soaking in the solution of 0.1% KNO3 and priming on filter paper moistened with 0.5% KNO3 for 8 hours. Considering germination index, mean germination time and time to 50% germination, the best results were obtained within hydropriming on filter paper for 16 hours. This study has shown that the priming techniques significantly improved germination parameters of safflower. Although priming on filter paper showed better results, the soaking technique – due to its simplicity, low cost and easiness of application – can be successfully used to improve germination parameters of safflower and increase the number of plants per unit of area and thus increase the seed yield per acreage.

As parsley seed vigour is known to be low, a 3-year field study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of seed priming and pelleting. Hardening and solid matrix priming (SMP) were applied to two varieties (Cukrowa and Berlińska). Both methods of seed pre-sowing treatment increased the percentage, speed and synchrony of seedling emergence. Due to seed pre-treatment the original root yield of cv. Cukrowa increased by 6.45 to 7.09 t/ha and that of cv. Berlińska by 2.44 to 5.48 t/ha, depending on the priming technique. Pelleting of primed seeds negatively affected seed vigour as compared to the primed non-pelleted seeds.

A 2-year farm trial by employing the nutrient priming technique on common bean (Sar?k?z) and cowpea (?imal) seeds was performed to assess seed yield and protein content. Priming: (p1) control, (p2) KH2PO4, (p3) ZnSO4 and (p4) KH2PO4+ZnSO4, planting date: (d1) 20 May, (d2) 15 June 2015, (d1) 7 May, (d2) 7 June 2016 were used to study the yield (kg ha-1) and crude protein (%) of the mentioned crops in Ankara, Turkey. In 2015, application of p3 and p4 (868.8, 834.8), d2 (962.3) and p4d2, p2d2 and p3d2 (1061, 1052, 1028) increased seed yield of Sar?k?z, and p2 and p1 (899.5, 835.9) and d2 (955.9) increased the yield of ?imal. Treatments of p4 and p3 (18.7, 18.5), d2 (19.2), and p4d2 (21.3) increased the protein of Sar?k?z and d2 (19.4) increased the protein of ?imal. In 2016, p3 (2506), d2 (2516) and p3d2 (3650) increased the yield, and p4 (26.1), d2 (26.8) and p4d2 (28.3) increased the protein of Sar?k?z. Treatments of p3 (1979.1), d2 (2664.3) and p3d2 (3310.6) increased the yield, and d1 (24.1) and p3d1 (25.7) increased the protein of ?imal. Application of Zn and P by seed priming seems to effectively increase the yield and protein content of these crops.

A characteristic property of legumes is the formation of hard-stone seeds. To use such seeds for sowing, it is necessary to carry out measures to increase their seeding indicators. The article provides an overview of methods of pre-sowing preparation of seeds, priming (Seed Priming). The harvest of Birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) can contain up to 90% or more hard-stone seeds. Mechanical priming of hard-stone seeds of Birdsfoot trefoil increases their germination energy and field germination.

    One of the effects of reducing water content on soil is reduction of growth and development of seedlings and variation of field development. Seed priming technique has been known as a challenge to improve germination and seedling emergence under different environmental stresses. The objectives of this research were to evaluate the effects of osmo-priming on germination characteristics and changes of proline, protein and catalase activity of Ocimum basilicum seeds. Results showed that drought stress reduced the germination characteristics and drought stress in -8 bar was the critical stress.  Priming treatments were include KNO3, PEG and NaCl by 0, -4 and -8 bar concentrations. The seeds were primed with those materials for 8 and 16 hours. The highest germination characteristics were obtained from nitrate potassium in -8 bar for 16 hours priming. Therefore the best seed treatment under drought stress during germination was obtained from the osmo-primed with -8 bar nitrate potassium for 16 hours. The drought stress increased proline and catalase activity but reduced total protein. Priming treatment increases proline, total protein and catalase activity under drought and control conditions. It is concluded that priming results in improvement in germination components of Ocimum basilicum in drought stress conditions and increases the resistance to drought stress with improvement of proline, protein and catalase activity in germination phase.
