AbstractObjectiveThis descriptive study aimed to determine the disaster preparedness of a senior class of undergraduate nursing students.MethodsThe study sample was composed of 73 undergraduate nursing school students from Ankara, Turkey. Data were collected by using a questionnaire developed by the researchers and were evaluated with descriptive statistics.ResultsMore than half (56.1%) of the students stated that the disaster competencies of nurses should include leadership, manager, and coordinator skills; 42.4% of them indicated the competencies of decision-maker, critical thinking, autonomy, and planning skills. Regarding education, 56.4% of the students considered their education on disaster nursing as “efficient”; however, 35.9% of them considered their education as “partly efficient” or “inefficient.”ConclusionsMany correct concepts related to the definition, features, competencies, and roles of disaster nurses were stated by students. However, low percentages and insufficient statements showed low preparedness for disasters. Curriculum development or redesign is necessary to include content and clinical experiences related to disasters. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2016;10:557–561)

The purpose of the present research was to investigate the claim that Open Focus Training® reduces anxiety. Subjects were 29 female, undergraduate nursing students, 15 treated (Open Focus) and 14 controls. The state-anxiety items from the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were administered prior to and following the treatment/control conditions. A one-way analysis of variance indicated that the Open Focus Training® procedure did not produce a significant reduction in levels of state anxiety. Possible reasons for this are discussed.

Background: The advents of new technologies are providing a variety of effective learning environment. However, many adult students still prefer traditional, academic settings and do not want to take online or hybrid classes. Methods: Present study included cross sectional descriptive survey design which was carried out on 394 undergraduate nursing students. Convenient sampling technique was chosen for selection of samples. A five-point Likert self-structured scale was used for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data in SPSS.Results: Study findings showed that there were 209 (53%) female participants. Significant difference (p=0.05) was found among participants’ gender and year of study, area of residence, father education, family income and whether they had ever attended online classes. Lack of control over the group was top perceived barrier with highest score (261 marks). Majority of participants (61%) perceived barriers encountered during online classes. Mann Whitney U test showed the significant differences of participants’ perceived barriers among male and female participants by their age, year of study, fathers’ education and family income (p<0.05).Conclusions: As more students are growing up familiar with internet-based learning, many students were still opposing to go with online classes. Barriers explored in the study can limit the acceptance of online classes among undergraduate nursing students. Higher authorities must find the ways for making online education user friendly.

A cross-sectional study involving 235 subjects was conducted in 2011 to compare the opinions of nursing students regarding mental illness and related care practices at two institutions in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Following approval by the ethics committee, data collection was initiated using an instrument containing questions regarding the importance of personal characteristics, knowledge of mental health, and the Opinions about Mental Illness (OMI) scale. Statistical analyses, including the Mann-Whitney test, Chi-squared test, and Spearman correlation at , were performed using SPSSv.15. The students exhibited significantly different characteristics only for Benevolence. Regarding the importance of knowledge about mental health, in comparison with students from the State University of Londrina (Universidade Estadual de Londrina – UEL), students at the State University of Maringa (Universidade Estadual de Maringá – UEM) considered psychological aspects more comprehensively than technical knowledge. We conclude that there are differences between students at these institutions in terms of knowledge and the factor Benevolence. Further studies are necessary to identify the underlying causes of such differences.

The study results indicate that undergraduate students experienced average levels of compassion fatigue, burnout and compassion satisfaction. Conclusion: As shown in the study, some of the undergraduate students are experiencing compassion fatigue and burnout, associated with relieving suffering of others.
