The m otu proprio Sollicitudinem nostram (1950), treating th e adm in istratio n of justice in eastern ecclesiastical courts, in th e field of canonical procedure m any and im portant developm ents, valuable for any canonist in the E ast and in th e West, and it deserves th erefore closer investigation. It is not only th e law at present in force in the Catholics Churches E astern, but also, one dares to say, an excellent first draught of the fu tu re section De iudicis in a new L atin Code. This Eastern Code contains sections th a t are quite new, such as De compromisso in arbitros (cans. 98—122); De iudicio contentioso coram unico iudice (cans. 453—467), and others, especially cans. 544—567 on criminal trials. These innovations a re based on th e latest ideas on canonical procedure and will, doubtless, have a great im pact on this further development. The present article confines itself to th e canons on trials before a single judge in the Catholic Church Eastern. In th e first place, it notes some differences of collegiate and noncollegiate (single judge) tribunals. In the second place, th e re are explained th e new fundam ental principles on w hich th e section on th e single judge in the Eastern Code is based; and, finally, an indication is given of the sources of this section as a w hole and, as fa r as possible, of eachcanon in particular.

The present article describes four ecclesiological models elaborated by Augustine of Hippo after his conversion to Christianity within the Catholic Church (Church / auctoritas, Church / communio, Church / Ciuitas Dei, Church / Cross). A brief summary of the ecclesiology of Vatican II is given and indications are given of the Augustinian elements still susceptible of development in the contemporary Church.

Toward the end of the last century, particularly during the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, hundreds of Catholic priests distanced themselves from the Church or decided to leave the ecclesiastical institution. This fact, unusual at that time, is the focal point of the present article, which is the result of an extensive investigation into the renunciation of the priesthood by a significant number of priests in the Barcelona diocese. The author addresses the question why such deeply committed members of an institution, as are the priests of the Catholic Church, decided to leave the institution at that moment. The author discusses some aspects of the social context in which this process took place and offers some explanations for these significant departures.

Not so long ago, the Catholic Church gained a new Pope. He chose to be called Francis. This is a strong symbol. The present article wants to ratify the fact that, theologically, the Church must walk under a testimony of poverty. Then, in harmony with the path of the CEBs (Ecclesial Grassroots Communities) that never lost their vocation of an option for the poor, the article intends to call attention to the need for a Church that will follow the mission as a theological fundament that in turn responds to the need to proclaim to the world what Pope Francis has been doing: humility and simplicity. Keywords: Catholic Church. Poor Church. CEBs. Humility. Simplicity.

Abstract: The present article has as an objective the study of the relationship between the Religious Community “Devoção do Senhor Bom Jesus do Bom Fim” with the clergy who work in the Sanctuary of Bonfim, located in the city of Salvador, and with the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. The article makes evident the relationships among men through religious symbols. The facts raised point to the ecumenical character of Catholicism, the religion of all, or almost all, in Salvador. We still further stress the prestige warranted by the participation in the administrative body of the Devoção, accom- panied by a retribution to the Devoção.

This article refers to the political risks that a group of five parishioners, members of an aristocratic Catholic parish located in Santiago, Chile, had to face when they recovered and discovered unconscious meanings about the hard and persistent psychological and sexual abuse they suffered in that religious organisation. Recovering and discovering meanings, from the collective memory of that parish, was a sort of conversion event in the five parishioners that determined their decision to bring to the surface of Chilean society the knowledge that the parish, led by the priest Fernando Karadima, functioned as a perverse organisation. That determination implied that the five individuals had to struggle against powerful forces in society, including the dominant Catholic Church in Chile and the political influences from the conservative Catholic elite that attempted to ignore the existence of the abuses that were denounced. The result of this article explains how the five parishioners, through their concerted political actions and courage, forced the Catholic Church to recognise, in an ambivalent way, the abuses committed by Karadima. The theoretical basis of this presentation is based on a socioanalytical approach that mainly considers the understanding of perversion in organisations and their consequences in the control of anxieties.

The activities of John Wheatley's Catholic Socialist Society have been analysed in terms of liberating Catholics from clerical dictation in political matters. Yet, beyond the much-discussed clerical backlash against Wheatley, there has been little scholarly attention paid to a more constructive response offered by progressive elements within the Catholic Church. The discussion that follows explores the development of the Catholic social movement from 1906, when the Catholic Socialist Society was formed, up until 1918 when the Catholic Social Guild, an organisation founded by the English Jesuit Charles Plater, had firmly established its local presence in the west of Scotland. This organisation played an important role in the realignment of Catholic politics in this period, and its main activity was the dissemination of the Church's social message among the working-class laity. The Scottish Catholic Church, meanwhile, thanks in large part to Archbishop John Aloysius Maguire of Glasgow, became more amenable to social reform and democracy.
