Objective:To analyze the frequency of and odds for and against HIV infection based on ABO blood type in a large sample of blood donors.Background:Coevolution between pathogens and hosts may explain the ABO system of polymorphisms. HIV-infected cells add ABO(H) blood group antigens to the viral envelope. Naturally occurring antibodies against ABO(H) antigens that are present in normal human sera are able to neutralize ABO-expressing HIVin vitro. Blood donors are ideal for studying blood groups and HIV infectionin vivobecause all donors are routinely typed and tested.Methods:All blood donors who donated blood between 1994 and 2010 were tested for HIV (ELISA antibody tests and Western blot test or immunofluorescence testing) and were ABO typed (direct and reverse grouping tests). HIV infection based on the ABO blood group was analyzed using the chi-square test and game theory.Results:The total number of examined blood donors during this period was 271,410, of whom 389 were infected with HIV. B-group donors were more infected than non-B donors (p= 0.006).Conclusions:A more restricted antigen recognition capacity of anti-Galα1-3Gal in blood groups AB and B and a weaker antigen-binding capacity of anti-A antibodies may contribute to a higher frequency of HIV infection in blood group B.

Objective To investigate correlations between ABO/rhesus (Rh) blood group antigens and anti- Helicobacter pylori and anti-cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) seropositivity in blood donors. Methods A total of 311 blood donors were enrolled. ABO and Rh blood groups were determined using hemagglutination tests. Specific anti- H. pylori IgG and anti-CagA IgG antibodies in sera were quantitated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Correlations between blood groups and anti- H. pylori and anti-CagA seropositivity were evaluated using the Chi-square test. Results O+ was the most frequent blood type (38%, n = 118). Anti- H. pylori IgG seropositivity was observed in 240 (77.2%) blood donors, while anti-CagA IgG seropositivity was observed in 132 (42.5%) blood donors. Although seropositivity rates for both anti- H. pylori and anti-CagA IgG were higher in individuals with blood type O, no statistically significant associations were observed between seropositivity and any ABO/Rh blood groups. Conclusion Individuals with blood type O may have higher rates of H. pylori seropositivity.

OBJECTIVE: To find out the distribution of ABO and Rh (D) blood groups among blood donors in districtMardan and to help transfusion services in the area.STUDY DESIGN: Cross sectional descriptive study.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in DHQ Hospital Mardan from 1st January2012 to 31st December 2012. A total of 2893 healthy adult, blood donors (both volunteer and directed) fromdistrict Mardan were included. Two ml of blood anti-coagulated with EDTA was taken and both ABO andRh (D) blood groups were determined using commercially available anti-sera of Biolaboratories. Thedistribution ofABO and Rh blood groups in the local community were then calculated.RESULTS: Among ABO blood groups “ B” (27.97%) was the most prevalent, followed by “0” (27.93%),“ A” (24.75%) and “ AB” (19.36%). Group Rh positive (94.30%) was more prevalent than Rh negative(5.70%). Similarly 0+ve (26.65%) was most frequent followed by B+ve (26.17%), A+ve (23.16%), AB+ve(18.32%), B've(1.80%),Ave(l.59%),O ve( 1.28%) and ABve( 1.04%).CONCLUSION: Blood group 'B' was most frequent among the ABO blood groups and Rh (D) positiveamong Rh blood groups while0+vewas the most frequent blood group in the study population.KEYWORDS: ABO Blood grouping, Rh (D) blood grouping, Mardan.

The present study is a retrospective analysis of allelic frequency of ABO and Rhesus (D) blood groups of donors attending the Deaprtment of Transfusion Medicine of Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM), Dhaka. BIRDEM IS a 625 bed hospital, where patients and blood donors come from all parts of Bangladesh. A total of 1, 28,506 blood donors of both genders were included in the study over fourteen years from June 1995 to June 2009 for analysis. Blood group was determined by performing the both tube and slide method blood grouping method. The distribution of blood groups in our population was B>O>A>AB in Rh positive groups donors and O>B>A>AB among Rh negative donors. Blood group B was more common among the males (37.42%) while O was predominant among female donors (33.83 %). On the other hand, blood group O negative was predominant in both genders (36.88%). In this study, Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium law was used to calculate the allelic frequency for ABO/ Rh system. Homozygous allelic frequency for Rh negative population was only 0.0007. Although phenotypically B group was dominant and AB was rare in our population, but according to Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium law the estimated allelic frequency of A (0.3694) and O (0.3040) showed higher frequency than B type (0.2300) in Bangladeshi population in both homozygous and heterozygous state. So, with increasing population of Bangladesh, this changing trend in estimated blood group in ABO system may play an important role in our genetic pattern. Campylobacter jejuni is an important cause of human foodborne gastroenteritis; strategies to prevent infection are hampered by a poor understanding of the complex interactions between host and pathogen. Previous work showed that C. jejuni could bind human histo-blood group antigens (BgAgs) in vitro and that BgAgs could inhibit the binding of C. jejuni to human intestinal mucosa ex vivo. Here, the major flagella subunit protein (FlaA) and the major outer membrane protein (MOMP) were identified as BgAg-binding adhesins in C. jejuni NCTC11168 . Significantly, the MOMP was shown to be O- glycosylated at Thr 268 ; previously only flagellin proteins were known to be O- glycosylated in C. jejuni . Substitution of MOMP Thr 268 led to significantly reduced binding to BgAgs. The O- glycan moiety was characterized as Gal(β1–3)-GalNAc(β1–4)-GalNAc(β1–4)-GalNAcα1-Thr 268 ; modelling suggested that O- glycosylation has a notable effect on the conformation of MOMP and this modulates BgAg-binding capacity. Glycosylation of MOMP at Thr 268 promoted cell-to-cell binding, biofilm formation and adhesion to Caco-2 cells, and was required for the optimal colonization of chickens by C. jejuni , confirming the significance of this O- glycosylation in pathogenesis.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are counted as a public health issue worldwide. The virus is transmitted to infect others through blood and blood products. Appointed blood groups and Rh-positive are more prone to the transmission of the infection by blood transfusion. The aim of this study is to find out the frequency of hepatitis B and C in apparently healthy blood donors and whether there is an association between ABO and Rh blood groups. ABO blood groups and their relationship with HBV and HCV infections were studied in 87,124 blood donors of both genders. Out of these donors, 353 individuals were found to be infected with HBV and HCV with a ratio of 1:250. The study was conducted between January to June 2018, which was presented to the Central Blood Bank in Baghdad and Al-Razi Medical Centre. It found that most hepatitis B and C blood donors were blood group O with a prevalence of 33.7 and 45.5%, respectively, while the results for those with blood group A showed 28.5 and 22.7% HBV and HCV infections, respectively. On the other hand, the incidence of HBV in individuals with blood group B was 29.8%, and HCV was 23.8%. AB blood group donors demonstrated the least incidence at 7.9% for both HBV and HCV. In conclusion, it has been found that there is a significant association between blood groups and Rh factor with hepatitis B and C infections.

ABO, Rhesus D and subgroups of ABO are highly immunogenic and are the common cause of antibody production in mismatched blood transfusions, haemolytic transfusion reaction and maternal alloimmunization. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of ABO, Rh D and subgroups of ABO among blood donors attending Specialist Hospital Sokoto, Nigeria. ABO, Rhesus D and subgroups of ABO antigen status of 176 blood donors with mean age of 30.44 ± 8.210 years attending Specialist Hospital Sokoto were determined using tile method for ABO and Rh D and conventional tube method for anti- A1, anti- H reagents for ABO subgroups respectively. Among the 176 subjects tested, blood group O+ was the most frequent group with 93 (52.8%), 39 (22.2%) were blood group B+, 37(21.0%) were blood group A+, 5 (2.8%) were blood group AB+, 2 (1.1%) were blood group O-. No data was obtained for A-, B- and AB- blood groups.  Out of 37 A blood groups obtained, 31 (83.8%) had A1 antigens and 6 (16.2%) had A2 antigens. Out of the 5 AB blood groups, all had A1B antigens. The study also shows that there was statistically significant difference between blood group A and ethnic groups (Hausa, Fulani and Yoruba) (p<0.05). Blood group O was found to be the most frequent followed by B, A and AB except among Hausa which revealed a pattern of O> A> B> AB. ABO, subgroups shows majority had A1 followed by A2 and A1B respectively.

Background. ABO and Rh blood group antigens are thought to be among genetic determinants of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Identification of blood group phenotypes are more associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It will be helpful for individuals who are susceptible blood groups to take care of themselves by avoiding other predisposing factors and taking preventive measures. Methods. Hospital-based comparative cross-sectional study was carried out from February to April 2019 at Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Referral Hospital. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected with a semistructured pretested questionnaire. ABO and Rh Blood group were determined by slide and test tube methods. Biochemical parameters were determined with Mindray BS-200E fully automated clinical chemistry analyzer. Data were analyzed by IBM SPSS version 20 statistical software. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were employed for data analysis. A P value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. From a total of 424 participants included for this study, blood group O was found higher in frequency with 74 (34.9%) and 97 (45.75%) for cases and healthy controls, respectively. ABO blood groups showed significant association with T2DM, a chi-square value of 12.163 and P value of 0.007. However, the Rh blood group was not associated with T2DM. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that blood group B had a higher risk (OR: 2.12, 95% CI: 1.33-3.32) and blood group O had decreased risk (OR: 0.636, 95% CI: 0.43-0.94) of T2DM as compared to other blood groups. Conclusion. ABO blood group antigens showed significant association with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Blood group B was associated with an increased risk and O blood group with decreased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract The nutritional requirements of mosquitoes include both sugar (generally derived from the nectar of flowers) and blood (humans or animals). Mosquitoes express different degrees of preferences towards hosts depending on behavioral, ecological, and physiological factors. These preferences have implications for mosquito-borne disease risk. The present study is directed to reveal the effect of the human blood groups on the fecundity and fertility of the malaria vector Anopheles stephensi. In laboratory tests, mosquitoes were fed on ABO blood groups via artificial membrane feeders, and the level of attraction against different blood groups was tested by the electroantennogram and wind tunnel bioassay under control conditions. Overall, the human blood type had a significant impact on the fecundity and fertility of female An. stephensi. The highest numbers of eggs are laid, in the case of blood group B, (mean (±SD)) 203.19 (9.45) followed by the AB, 105.75 (4.51), and O, 98.8 (3.98). In the case of blood group B, females attain the highest fertility of about 89.98 (5.43%). This study provides novel insight into the ABO host choice of the mosquitoes that are still partially unknown and suggests more personal protection, which is a useful tool for the prevention of malaria.

Abstract Abstract 4188 The frequency of minor blood group antigens has not been described among Hispanic blood donors. A retrospective cohort study was performed using the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center (STBTC) donor database, LifeTrak. Blood donors self-identified race and ethnicity. Caucasian and Hispanic donors were eligible. Donors who did not have minor antigen testing performed were not included. The STBTC has a high proportion of Hispanic blood donors (299047/779409, 38%), who are primarily of Mexican ancestry. Minor antigen testing was performed in 10% (74140/779409) of all donors; 8% (25394/299407) of Hispanic donors and 11% (42891/392074) of Caucasian donors. Hispanic donors were significantly more like to express blood type O Rh+ than Caucasian donors (13920/25394, 55% v 14947/74140, 35%; p<0.001). The frequency of ABO and RhD blood groups were similar to those reported previously in Caucasian and Hispanic donors (Garraty, et al. Transfusion, 2004). Of the minor antigens, expression of Rh E also differed significantly between Hispanic and Caucasian donors (4706/11744, 40% v 5416/19497, 28%; p<0.001). The prevalence of the other minor antigens were more similar and are reported in Figure 1. Complete Rh haplotypes were available in 8296 Caucasian donors and 7176 Hispanic donors. The haplotype RhDce differed significantly in 36% of Caucasians and 50% of Hispanics (3022/8296 v 3589/7176). The haplotype RhDce was previously reported as most common in African-Americans at 44% (Avent, et al. Blood, 2000). Haplotype RhDCE was found in 8% of Caucasians and 10% of Hispanics (660/8296 v 643/7176); haplotype RhDcE in 16% of Caucasians and 15% of Hispanics (1354/8296 v 1041/7176); and haplotype RhDCe was found in 39% of Caucasians and 27% of Hispanics (3260/8296 v 1903/7176). Differences exist in the frequency of minor blood group antigens among Caucasian and Hispanic blood donors in Southwest Texas. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

A series of glycoproteins and glycolipids on red blood cell surface constitute blood group antigens. These are AB, A, B and O in ABO blood group system and Rh in rhesus blood group system. A total of 1065 unrelated Backward Caste (OBC) individuals from Uttar Pradesh were studied for the phenotype and allele frequency distribution of ABO and Rh (D) blood groups. Total 1065 samples analyzed, phenotype B blood type has the highest frequency 36.81% (n=392), followed by O (32.68%; n=348), A (23.66%; n=252) and AB (6.85%; n=73). The overall phenotypic frequencies of ABO blood groups were B>O>A>AB. The allelic frequencies of O, A, and B alleles were 0.5819, 0.1674 and 0.2506 respectively. Out of total 1065 samples, 1018 (95.59%) samples were Rh-positive and 47 (4.41%) were Rh-negative. Phenotypic frequency of Rh-negative in Koari, Yadav, Kurmi and Maurya samples were 0.99%, 4%, 1.4% and 7.6% respectively.
