OBJECTIVE: To find out the distribution of ABO and Rh (D) blood groups among blood donors in districtMardan and to help transfusion services in the area.STUDY DESIGN: Cross sectional descriptive study.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted in DHQ Hospital Mardan from 1st January2012 to 31st December 2012. A total of 2893 healthy adult, blood donors (both volunteer and directed) fromdistrict Mardan were included. Two ml of blood anti-coagulated with EDTA was taken and both ABO andRh (D) blood groups were determined using commercially available anti-sera of Biolaboratories. Thedistribution ofABO and Rh blood groups in the local community were then calculated.RESULTS: Among ABO blood groups “ B” (27.97%) was the most prevalent, followed by “0” (27.93%),“ A” (24.75%) and “ AB” (19.36%). Group Rh positive (94.30%) was more prevalent than Rh negative(5.70%). Similarly 0+ve (26.65%) was most frequent followed by B+ve (26.17%), A+ve (23.16%), AB+ve(18.32%), B've(1.80%),Ave(l.59%),O ve( 1.28%) and ABve( 1.04%).CONCLUSION: Blood group 'B' was most frequent among the ABO blood groups and Rh (D) positiveamong Rh blood groups while0+vewas the most frequent blood group in the study population.KEYWORDS: ABO Blood grouping, Rh (D) blood grouping, Mardan.

Background: Many reports have appeared in recent years showing an association between blood  groups and Myocardial Infarction. Clinical studies have shown a significant association between MI  and blood group B.Objective: To investigate correlation of ABO blood groups with risk of MI.Methods: The present cross sectional study analyzed ABO blood group among total 400 subjects of  any age from the local population of Jodhpur city from July to December 2011.Among them 200  subjects were normal health (135 male and 65 female) students of Dr. S.N. Medical College, Jodhpur  and another 200 (135 male, 65 female) were MI patients admitted in the CCU of Mathura Das  Memorial (MDM) Hospital, Jodhpur. ABO blood group of all subjects were determined by slide  agglutination method. Risk of MI was expressed by risk ratio. Data were analyzed by one sample chi  square test.Results: The results obtained in this study showed that the prevalence of MI in blood  group B is significantly higher than in all other ABO blood groups.Conclusion: The results may  conclude that there is a significant association between MI and blood group B. Background & Objective: Practically, most important blood groups are A, B, O, AB and RhD(+/-), which are essential for right blood supply to the recipients and in various studies. The incidence of ABO and Rhesus (Rh) groups varies markedly in different parts of the world and in different races. The present study was aimed at determining the prevalence of ABO & RhD blood groups among healthy blood donors in Western Rajasthan. Material and Methods: At our centre, all the healthy blood donors were assessed and analyzed for ABO-Rh blood grouping during a period of previous 4 years (from January, 2015 to December, 2018). 119200 samples were checked for ABO and RhD blood grouping by manual saline antigen-antibody agglutination method using commercially prepared antisera antiA, antiB, antiAB, antiD, in house prepared reagent cells Acell, Bcell, Ocell and negative control. The results were reconfirmed on fully automated immunohematology analyzer (Galileo Neo, USA) with direct hemagglutination micro-well plates using antiA, antiB, antiD series-5, antiD Novaclone, Monoclonal control, Acell, Bcell and Ocell provided by the manufacturer. Discrepant samples were cross checked separately by column agglutination technique using DG Gel ABO/Rh-2D cards (Diagnostic Grifols S.A.) and tube technique. Results: We found that the most common blood group was B+ 39758 (33.35%) followed by O+, A+, AB+, B-, O-, A- and AB-. RhD negative donors were 10504 (8.81%) among the total donors. Phenotypic frequencies were expressed under the standard assumption of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Conclusion: Present study concludes that the most common ABO phenotype found among healthy blood donors in Western Rajasthan (India) is group B with RhD negativity being 8.81%. Larger studies should be conducted to calculate antigenic, phenotypic and allelic frequencies in general population. Present study was designed to find the association of ABO blood groups with oral cancers. In this study 50 diagnosed cases of oral cancers and 50 healthy controls were selected. ABO blood grouping, complete blood examination was performed in all these subjects. Out of 50 patients 16 were blood group A, 11 group `B`, 8 group `AB` and 15 belong to group `O` as compared to controls who were, 14, 15, 3, 18 for blood groups A, B, AB and O respectively. Conclusions: No relationship is found between Oral Cancers and ABO Blood groups.

Abstract Background ABO blood group types are among the risk factors of COVID-19 infection in many recent studies. Thus, the objective of this study is to find the relations between ABO types and COVID-19 infection as well as to find out the riskier group that is associated with hospitalization and the need for O2 support. Methods This observational cross-sectional study was done to identify the risk and relations between ABO blood groups and Rh factor of 530 Iraqi-Kurdish patients affected with COVID-19 infection. Among them, 184 patients were severe cases that needed hospitalization while 346 patients were mild to moderate cases that were treated at home. The diagnosis of COVID-19 infection was based on Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test, high-resolution Chest CT scan, strong clinical suspicion plus history of the close home or job contact with COVID-19 confirmed patient. Results There were no significant differences in the distribution of ABO blood grouping in the total COVID-19 cases, however, the severity in form of hospitalization and O2 demand was higher in blood group A whereas the lowest in group B. Male patient were significantly older than females with more prolonged illness duration. The duration of COVID-19 illness, the need for plasma, and the rate of mortality were very significantly higher among hospitalized COVID-19 patients than non-hospitalized. In 37.2% of the patient, the initial presentation was a combination of more than one symptom. In 28% of cases, myalgia was the 1st mono-symptomatic presentation. Conclusions Blood group A is associated with the highest rate of hospitalization and O2 demand, besides, the duration of illness and rate of mortality in males were more than females.

BACKGROUND: The development of periodontal diseases depends on the presence of causative microorganisms, host immunity and risk factors. Although variability present among the types of periodontal diseases, all are represented to a shared interaction between host and bacteria. ABO blood groups are the most investigated erythrocyte antigen system. However, limited investigations have been conducted to explore the alliance between ABO blood groups and periodontal diseases. AIM: Our purpose was to explore any possible association between the severity of chronic periodontitis with ABO blood groups and Rh factor. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 205 patients out of 1126 generalised chronic periodontitis patients (GCP) who were referred to Al-Farabi Colleges, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. They were categorized into; group I (mild), group II (moderate) and group III (sever). RESULTS: The patients with blood group O were at a greater risk to develop GCP irrespective of its severity, followed by those with blood group A, B, and AB. The dispensation of the Rh factor in all groups exhibited a significantly greater distribution of Rh positive. CONCLUSION: Genetic factors such as ABO blood group antigens may act as a risk influencer that affects the progression and severity of the chronic periodontitis.

Background. Determination of the various ABO/Rh blood group distributions and their association with malaria infection has paramount importance in the context of transfusion medicine and malaria control. Methods. Facility based cross-sectional study was conducted from February to June, 2015, to assess ABO/Rh blood groups distribution and their association with asymptomatic malaria. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Blood grouping was done using monoclonal antibodies. Thin and thick blood films were examined for Plasmodium parasites. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Results. A total of 416 blood donors participated with median age of 22±0.29 (median ± standard error of the mean). Distribution of ABO phenotypes, in decreasing order, was O (175, 42.1%), A (136, 32.7%), B (87, 20.9%), and AB (18, 4.3%). Most of them were Rh+ (386, 92.8%). The overall malaria prevalence was 4.1% (17/416). ABO blood group is significantly associated with malaria infection (P=0.022). High rate of parasitemia was seen in blood group O donors (6.899, P=0.003) compared to those with other ABO blood groups. Conclusion. Blood groups O and AB phenotypes are the most and the least ABO blood groups, respectively. There is significant association between ABO blood group and asymptomatic malaria parasitemia.

The present study is a retrospective analysis of allelic frequency of ABO and Rhesus (D) blood groups of donors attending the Deaprtment of Transfusion Medicine of Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM), Dhaka. BIRDEM IS a 625 bed hospital, where patients and blood donors come from all parts of Bangladesh. A total of 1, 28,506 blood donors of both genders were included in the study over fourteen years from June 1995 to June 2009 for analysis. Blood group was determined by performing the both tube and slide method blood grouping method. The distribution of blood groups in our population was B>O>A>AB in Rh positive groups donors and O>B>A>AB among Rh negative donors. Blood group B was more common among the males (37.42%) while O was predominant among female donors (33.83 %). On the other hand, blood group O negative was predominant in both genders (36.88%). In this study, Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium law was used to calculate the allelic frequency for ABO/ Rh system. Homozygous allelic frequency for Rh negative population was only 0.0007. Although phenotypically B group was dominant and AB was rare in our population, but according to Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium law the estimated allelic frequency of A (0.3694) and O (0.3040) showed higher frequency than B type (0.2300) in Bangladeshi population in both homozygous and heterozygous state. So, with increasing population of Bangladesh, this changing trend in estimated blood group in ABO system may play an important role in our genetic pattern. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are counted as a public health issue worldwide. The virus is transmitted to infect others through blood and blood products. Appointed blood groups and Rh-positive are more prone to the transmission of the infection by blood transfusion. The aim of this study is to find out the frequency of hepatitis B and C in apparently healthy blood donors and whether there is an association between ABO and Rh blood groups. ABO blood groups and their relationship with HBV and HCV infections were studied in 87,124 blood donors of both genders. Out of these donors, 353 individuals were found to be infected with HBV and HCV with a ratio of 1:250. The study was conducted between January to June 2018, which was presented to the Central Blood Bank in Baghdad and Al-Razi Medical Centre. It found that most hepatitis B and C blood donors were blood group O with a prevalence of 33.7 and 45.5%, respectively, while the results for those with blood group A showed 28.5 and 22.7% HBV and HCV infections, respectively. On the other hand, the incidence of HBV in individuals with blood group B was 29.8%, and HCV was 23.8%. AB blood group donors demonstrated the least incidence at 7.9% for both HBV and HCV. In conclusion, it has been found that there is a significant association between blood groups and Rh factor with hepatitis B and C infections.

Background: Dengue can result in high mortality. Several studies have shown an association of blood groups with the severity of dengue. In our study we attempt to associate the prevalence of blood groups with the known hematological prognosticators and thus derive its impact on the severity of dengue. We aim to study the patterns and prevalence of different ABO blood groups in dengue fever.Methods: A total of 100 serologically proven dengue cases over a month’s period in November 2016 were recruited for our study. Their relevant hematological data (obtained by automated haematology analyser and peripheral smears) and blood grouping results were recorded and analyzed.Results: The age range was 5 months to 65 years with a slight male predominance. Analysis of the blood group patterns showed prevalence of O group (42%) followed by A and B group (27% each). B group was more prevalent in children (34%) and females (31%) with dengue.The patients with B group showed increased derangement in hematological parameters namely higher number of cases with B group showed rise in haematocrit (59%), an increased number of cases with leucopenia (56%), higher proportion of cases with lymphocytosis (45%) and  severe thrombocytopenia  (74%) when compared to the other blood groups.Conclusions: Our study shows that blood groups can impact severity of dengue and that B group is a risk factor for severity hence, such individuals warrant close supervision especially in the presence of other risk factors.

ABO, Rhesus D and subgroups of ABO are highly immunogenic and are the common cause of antibody production in mismatched blood transfusions, haemolytic transfusion reaction and maternal alloimmunization. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of ABO, Rh D and subgroups of ABO among blood donors attending Specialist Hospital Sokoto, Nigeria. ABO, Rhesus D and subgroups of ABO antigen status of 176 blood donors with mean age of 30.44 ± 8.210 years attending Specialist Hospital Sokoto were determined using tile method for ABO and Rh D and conventional tube method for anti- A1, anti- H reagents for ABO subgroups respectively. Among the 176 subjects tested, blood group O+ was the most frequent group with 93 (52.8%), 39 (22.2%) were blood group B+, 37(21.0%) were blood group A+, 5 (2.8%) were blood group AB+, 2 (1.1%) were blood group O-. No data was obtained for A-, B- and AB- blood groups.  Out of 37 A blood groups obtained, 31 (83.8%) had A1 antigens and 6 (16.2%) had A2 antigens. Out of the 5 AB blood groups, all had A1B antigens. The study also shows that there was statistically significant difference between blood group A and ethnic groups (Hausa, Fulani and Yoruba) (p<0.05). Blood group O was found to be the most frequent followed by B, A and AB except among Hausa which revealed a pattern of O> A> B> AB. ABO, subgroups shows majority had A1 followed by A2 and A1B respectively.
