[ACCESS RESTRICTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI AT AUTHOR'S REQUEST.] This experiment uses a 2x2x2 experimental design to assess the influence that type of appearance-related surgery (reconstructive or cosmetic), stigma management strategy (accepting or avoiding), and gender (male or female) have on participants' likelihood to grant an employee one weeks' worth of job-protected leave. This study used a combined theoretical lens of Stigma Management Communication (SMC; Meisenbach, 2010) and Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA; Fishbein and Ajzen, 1975) to guide predictions on the decision-making process of participants. While type of surgery (reconstructive or cosmetic) and stigma management strategy (accepting or avoiding) had no influence on participants' likelihood to grant unpaid leave, participants in reconstructive surgery conditions were significantly more likely to grant paid leave to requestors than participants in cosmetic surgery conditions. Similarly, while neither the gender of the requestor nor the gender of the participant had significant influence on participant decisions, the gender of the participant was significantly related to other factors within the study, such that female participants had significantly higher acceptance of cosmetic surgery, more positive attitudes toward people with disabilities, and a greater likelihood of knowing someone who had cosmetic surgery than men. Stigma management strategy did influence some variables within the study, such that women in reconstructive conditions perceived requestors using the "avoiding" stigma management strategy to be significantly more masculine than requestors who used the "accepting" stigma management strategy. Practical and theoretical implications of this study are discussed.

Violence against women seems to be more of an economic than a sociological problem. In Ghana, no study has investigated the economic causes of domestic violence against women. The chapter seeks to investigate the economic factors that are likely to drive domestic violence among married couples. The study uses a survey of 260 married women from selected communities around the University of Cape Coast. Due to the nature of the measurement of domestic violence, the study adopts the binary logit model to estimate the key economic variables that affect the likelihood of being subjected to domestic violence. Average income, property ownership, economic activities, and their interactions seem to drive domestic violence after controlling for some household covariates. It is found that income and a combination of being economically engaged and owning an asset significantly affected domestic violence at their desired level of significance. Stemming from this, the authors call on the appropriate authorities to make credit facilities available to women to enable them to be economically engaged. Empowering women through the provision of micro-credit facilities has the potential to reduce the economic dimensions of domestic violence.

Purpose More and more companies use physical space as a way to enhance creativity, create change and stimulate interaction. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how space affects this interrelationship and explores how space can support organizational strategy. Design/methodology/approach Using a qualitative approach, this study explores three cases from an educational, a cultural and an industrial setting to illustrate how space can be used to support an organization’s policy and help its strategic intentions. Findings The findings demonstrate how space can be used to enhance organizational strategy and demonstrate how closely the creation of space can be related to the development of that strategy. Specifically, the study finds that the “’space-organizational strategy’ link has three uses: “Space as an organizational meeting place” in the University campus, (2) “Space as a network organization” in the culture and production center and (3) “Space as a cell organization” in the private manufacturing company. Originality/value The study will show that the design and operationalization of spaces can influence management and organizational strategy because space influences relations between people and that organizations can use space to support their strategic intentions seems to have been overlooked in the literature.

In the recent years, major economic developments have occurred in rural Alaska that have permanently changed the social, political and institutional landscape. The 150 Eskimo, Indian and Aleut communities have borne the brunt of these changes. Few have had available to them the indigenous human resources, the technical skills and educational preparation necessary to assume full control over these forces. In 1980 the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, in cooperation with several native organisations, successfully approached the Bernard van Leer Foundation with a proposal to assist Alaska Native communities in developing their own capacity to shape their future. This is the story of how the ‘Van Leer Project’ has attempted to respond to those developments.
