Development of oil palm plantation on peatland was faced with hydrophobicity problem caused by over drained. Hydrophobicity could reduce water retention and nutrient availability in the peat soil. Beside of proper water management application, addition of soil ameliorant which contain iron could increase stability and improve peat soil fertility. The study was conducted to obtain the effect of steel slag on peat soil properties and hydrophobicity. In this study, peat soil was incorporated with steel slag and incubated in 60 days period. The research was employed completely randomized design (CRD) factorial 2 x 2 x 4. First factor is peat maturity consists of two levels: sapric (S) and hemic (H), while the second factor is soil moisture which also consist of two levels: field capacity (W1) and dry (under the critical water content) (W2). The third factor is steel slag dosage which consist of four levels: 0 g pot (TB0), 7.17 g pot (TB1), 14.81 g -1 -1 pot (TB2), and 22.44 g pot (TB3). The result showed that application of steel slag significantly increase of soil pH, ash content, and water retention at pF 4.2. Furthermore, application of steel slag significantly reduce time for water reabsorption (wettability) in sapric. On the other hand, there are negative corellation between water penetration and soil pH, ash content, and water retention at pF 4.2. Overall, application of steel slag could increase wettability and prevent peat soil hydrophobicity.

ABSTRACT The elemental sulfur (S0) application may reduce soil pH, benefiting plants adapted to acid conditions and lessening problems of overliming. Nevertheless, there is no official recommendation for its application. The objective of the study was to quantify the S0 doses required to reduce the pH of soils from Southern Brazil. The experiment was carried out in the laboratory in a factorial scheme (5 × 5), with a completely randomized design and three replicates. The treatments consisted of five soils, and five doses of S0, corresponding to 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200% of the estimated dose need to reach pH 4.0. The applied doses of S0 resulted in reduction of pH and base saturation (V%) and increase of potential acidity (H + Al). These effects, however, were reduced due to the low rate of oxidation of the S0 applied (0.76-3.36%). The soil variables correlated with S0 oxidation were Mg2+ (0.86***), Al3+ (-0.82***), H + Al (-0.89***), V% (0.68***) and aluminum saturation (m%) (-0.87***). In the evaluated soils the oxidation of 50 kg ha-1 of S0 was required to reduce one unit of pH in H2O.

Abstract Biochar offers option for managing land as a source  of carbon and soil conditioner. The ability of biochar in  increasing soil  fertility associates with its ability to retain water, reduce soil acidity, and keep the availability of essential nutrients for plant thus increasing crop produc-tivity, and reducing the risk of soil erosion. Biochar is also substance to provide a  suitable environment for the growth of beneficial microbes, including an isolate of  Trichoderma harzianum used in this study, that has been proven capable in stimulating plant growth and suppressing soil borne diseases. The purpose of this research was to determine the in vitro compatibility of T. harzianum DT38, Indonesia Biotech-nology Research Institute for Estate Crop (IBRIEC) collection, in mixtures of  EFBPO biochar and peat during 28 days. This research was performed in completely randomized design with single factor, comprising of five formulas: 1) 100% EFBOP biochar (K1), 2) 100% peat (K2), 3) Mixture of EFBOP biochar and peat = 1 : 4 (F1), 4) Mixture of EFBOP biochar and peat=  1 : 8 (F2), dan 5) Mixture of EFBOP biochar and peat=  1 : 12 (F3). The colony forming units were determined after storage to express the amount of fungal propaguls in each mixture. The results was analized using one-way ANOVA test and Duncan Test. Result showed that the total of  T. harzianum DT38 propaguls was not significantly difference among five mixture preparations tested during 0 and 7 days storage. The total propaguls were insignificantly difference between F1 and K2, and also between  F2 and F3in 14, 21 and 28 days incubation. Peat addition on biochar increased the total of  T. harzianum DT38 propaguls during 28 days incubation. The total propaguls which are remain high in F1, F2 and F3 formula up to 28 days storage indicating that the mixtures suitable for microbe media and biofertilizer formula.

Improper disposal of human waste is one of the most serious health problems in developing countries due to pollution of the  environment. The use of chemical fertilizers for agriculture increase the plant growth to meet the food security of the world, but also causes environmental problems including lowering of soil pH. On the other hand, anaerobic pasteurization digester systems enable the recovery of nutrients from human faces and urine for the benefit of agriculture, thus helping to preserve soil fertility. Therefore, the present work aims to assess the potential of using ammonium sulphate processed from anaerobic pasteurization digesters latrines  (APDLS) effluent to stabilize soil pH. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with four treatments replicated four times. The treatments were Ammonium sulphate, Compost manure, Di-ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and control. The results showed that soil pH increased significantly (p<0.05) from 4.7 -4.9 before planting to 5.6 - 5.7 after planting. The organic and inorganic fertilizers as well as the interaction between the fertilizer and time did not have significant effect on soil pH (p > 0.05). The Ammonium sulphate recovered from APDLs final effluent could act as effective as a chemical fertilizer without significant reduction in the yield.

Cihateup (West Java highland) and Rambon (West Java lowland) ducks  are two local ducks which are commonly raised by farmers in West Java under extensive systems. The decline of land availability as a result of increasing human population has meant that the ducks should be raised under intensive system. An experimental research was conducted to evaluate the effect of energy-protein balance in the diet on semen characteristic of Cihateup and Rambon  drakes under restricted water system (intensive system). The research was designed in Completely Randomized Design; there were six energy-protein balance in the diets as treatment, which were G1 ( 3000 kcal/kg ME, 20 % CP); G2 ( 3000 kcal/kg ME, 16 % CP); G3 ( 3000 kcal/kg ME, 13.5% CP); G4 (2700 kcal/kg ME, 20 % CP); G5 (2700 kcal/kg ME, 16 % CP); and G6 ( 2700 kcal/kg ME, 13.5 % CP); each treatment was replicated three times. Semen was collected when the drakes reached the age of nine months and semen evaluation for volume semen, sperm motility and sperm abnormality was conducted. The results show that semen characteristics show that the highest motility was produced by G5 (2700 kcal/kg ME, 16 % CP) for Cihateup drakes and G6 ( 2700 kcal/kg ME, 13.5 % CP) for Rambon drakes. There was no significant different effect among treatments on abnormality of Cihateup drakes semen; anyhow G5 (2700 kcal/kg ME, 16 % CP) can be considered as the best diet for  Rambon drakes based on its semen abnormality. It can be concluded that at feeding diet containing similar Metabolizable Energy level, Cihateup drakes required higher protein level than Rambon drakes to produce a good quality of semen. Keywords: energy-protein balance, west java local drakes, semen
