Students of Mathematics education often struggle with integration problem, but yet the root of the problem related to critical thinking is rarely investigated. This article reports research where the first-year students of Mathematics Education of PGRI University Semarang were given an integral problem, then individually they were interviewed related to the answer they have made. The findings of students' difficulties in working on integration problem were confirmed through several questions in the interview which aimed to uncover their critical thinking process related to concepts, procedures, and problem solving. This study shows that student difficulties in Integration by disc method such as failure in identifying radius of a rotary object, specify partition, and integration bounds are closely related to their failure to think critically related to concept, skills, and problem solving aspects of critical thinking.

Abstrak Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan profil berpikir kritis mahasiswa PGMI UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta dalam memecahkan masalah matematika dasar. Pemecahan masalah merupakan proses mental tingkat tinggi dan memerlukan proses berpikir yang lebih kompleks termasuk berpikir kritis. Pemecahan masalah juga mempunyai hubungan timbal balik dengan berpikir kritis. Berpikir kritis pada penelitian ini mengacu pada berpikir kritis dengan kriteria FRISCO. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Pada penelitian ini diambil 9 subjek penelitian, yaitu 3 subjek pada kemampuan matematika dasar tinggi, sedang, dan rendah. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan pemberian soal pemecahan masalah dan wawancara. Ada 5 tipe masalah yang digunakan dalam soal pemecahan masalah yaitu: simple translation problem, complex translation problem, process problem, applied problem, dan puzzle problem. Profil berpikir kritis mahasiswa dalam memecahkan masalah matematika dasar menurut kriteria FRISCO pada setiap langkah pemecahan Polya sebagai berikut: a) Mahasiswa dengan KPM tinggi mengetahui fokus, alasan, situasi dan kejelasan dalam setiap tahap pemecahan masalah juga menjelaskan inferensinya pada setiap tahap pemecahan masalah Polya pada simple translation problem, complex translation problem, dan applied problem, tetapi belum dapat untuk 2 masalah lainnya; b) Mahasiswa dengan KPM sedang, mengetahui fokus, alasan, situasi dan kejelasan dalam setiap tahap pemecahan masalah juga menjelaskan inferensinya pada setiap tahap pemecahan masalah Polya pada simple translation problem dan applied problem tetapi belum dapat untuk 3 masalah lainnya; dan c) Mahasiswa dengan KPM rendah, mengetahui fokus, alasan, inferensi, situasi, klarifikasi dan memeriksa kembali pada setiap langkah pemecahan masalah Polya pada masalah simple translation problem, dan belum dapat pada puzzle problem, sedangkan untuk 3 masalah lainnya mengetahui fokus dan alasan hanya sampai pada langkah melaksanakan strategi, tetapi belum dapat mengetahui inferensinya. Kata kunci: berpikir kritis, pemecahan masalah, kemampuan matematika dasar Abstract The purpose of this research is to describe the critical thinking profile of PGMI UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta students in solving basic mathematics problems. Problem solving is a high level mental process and requires a more complex thinking process including critical thinking. Problem solving also has a reciprocal relationship with critical thinking. Critical thinking in this study refers to critical thinking with the FRISCO criteria. The type of this research is descriptive research with qualitative approach. In this study, 9 subjects taken, that is 3 subject to the ability of high-basic mathematic, medium, and low. Data was collected by way of tests and interviews. There are 5 types of problems used in problem solving tests: simple translation problem, complex translation problem, problem process, applied problem, and puzzle problem. The profile of critical thinking of students in solving basic mathematics problems according to FRISCO criteria at each polya solving step as follows: a) Students with high problem solving abilitys know the focus, reason, situation and clarity in every problem solving step also explain the inferences at each stage of solving Polya problem on simple translation problem, complex translation problem, and applied problem, but not yet for 2 other problems; b) Students with medium problem solving abilitys know the focus, reason, situation and clarity in each stage of problem solving also explain the inferences at each stage of polya problem solving on simple translation problem and applied problem but not yet for the other 3 problems; and c) Students with low problem solving abilitys know the focus, reason, inference, situation, clarification and re-examine each step Polya problem solving on the problem of simple translation problem, and not yet in the puzzle problem, while for 3 other problems know the focus and reason only to the step of implementing the strategy, but not yet know the inferences. Background. Studies of various scholars confirm the relation between the application of stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence, but there is a lack of research about the relationship between individual coping strategies and emotional intelligence levels among the first- and the fourth-year students. The aim of the research was to reveal peculiarities of emotional intelligence and stress coping strategies of undergraduate students of physical education and sport study programs.Methods. The Shutte Self-Assessment Questionnaire was used to measure the level of emotional intelligence of the participants (Schutte & Malouff, 1999). The questionnaire composed by Grakauskas and Valickas (2006) was used to identify the stress coping strategies. It consists of four factors: social support factor, problem-solving factor, emotional discharge factor and avoidance factor. The research was based on the following ethical principles: confidentiality, anonymity, impartiality and privacy. The first- and the fourth-year students of the Lithuanian Sports University and Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences, Physical Education and Sports Programs were surveyed. The research sample consisted of 123 participants. Male participants comprised 66.7% of the sample, and the female participants comprised 33.3%. of the sample. The first-year undergraduates made up 57.7% of the sample, and the fourth-year undergraduates made up 42.3% of the sample.Results. Analyzing the data on the stress coping strategies according to the participants studying experience, it was found that the fourth-year students used the social support strategy more frequently in comparison with the first-year students. In addition, the fourth-year students applied emotional discharge and avoidance strategies more often than the first-year students. Comparing stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence according to the gender of participants, no statistically significant differences were found. There was a statistically significant relationship between the stress coping strategy and the ability to evaluate and express one’s emotions.Conclusions. Comparing emotional intelligence of the first- and the fourth-year students of physical education and sports study programs, no statistically significant differences were found. Comparison of stress coping strategies applied by the first- and the fourth-year students of physical education and sports degree programs revealed that the fourth-year students tended to use social support, emotional discharge and avoidance strategies more frequently than the first-year students. Comparison of stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence according to gender did not show any statistically significant differences. However, there was a statistically significant relationship between stress coping strategies and emotional intelligence, though it was a weak, but significant difference between emotional intelligence components such as the ability to express and manage emotions and problem-solving focused stress coping strategy.Keywords: stress, stress management strategies, emotional intelligence.

Specific training may be required to develop creativity in design students. At the very least, training is valuable in developing creativity in first-year students. Creativity is a skill that can be examined, used and taught - and it is one that is central to designing. This paper presents the results of empirical research from a class in creative problem solving for design students. The nature of creativity and the structure of the class are described, and this is followed by an outline of the research methodology and the use of the verbal Torrance Test of Creative Thinking. Creativity, as measured through the test, significantly increased.

This article describes the implementation of writing in Mathematics as an effort to improve students’ problem solving skill. The research method was classroom action research which was conducted in three cycles. Research participants were 24 first-year students at PGSD FKIP Syiah Kuala University. Data was collected using a written test consisted of mathematical word problems presented to the students at the end of each cycle, and interview. Students’ problem solving skill was analyzed based on the four steps of problem solving proposed by Polya: 1. the ability to understand the problem, 2. the ability to plan a strategy to solve the problem, 3. the ability to execute the plan, and 4. the ability to re-check. Result shows that writing in Mathematics improve students’ problem solving skill. In cycle 1, the average score of students’ problem solving skill was 51.7. In cycle 2, the average score was 75.6, and finally in cycle 3, the average score was 83.4. During interview, the students confessed that writing helped them organize their thinking so that they can solve a problem satisfactorily.

Researchers have suggested that case library learning is an effective instructional method that promotes argumentation skills for ill-structured problem-solving. However, little research has examined scaffolding strategies to implement effective case library learning. The aim of this research was to examine the effects of indexing prompts as scaffolds on argumentation skills during problem-solving in case library learning. A quasi-experimental design was employed for the research. A total of 111 first-year students in a university across three sections in a career development course participated in the experiment. Participants were provided with three different indexing prompts: explanation-based indexing prompts (focused on self-explaining anomalies of individual cases), difference-based indexing prompts (focused on self-explaining similarities and differences between cases), and no prompts (allowing spontaneous self-explanations when studying cases). Learners’ argumentation essays comprising initial arguments, counterarguments, and rebuttals were collected. The results found that learners who were prompted to generate mental indices outperformed the learners in the control group when constructing argumentation. More specifically, explanation-based indices were beneficial in making counterarguments and rebuttals, and difference-based indices were helpful when making rebuttals. These findings suggest that indexing cases based on both exploration of the anomalies of each case and comparisons between cases improves argumentation by facilitating case retention, retrieval, and reuse. Critical thinking is a thinking process in processing information logically starti from understanding, analyzing, evaluating and making precise conclusions. Critical thinking indicators are clarification, assessment, inference, and strategy that referred to Jacob and Sam. Mathematics is designed to improve students' critical thinking in a solving problem. One of the factors that affect students' critical thinking in solving a problem is AQ. This research is descriptive study with qualitative approach. The aim is to describe critical thinking profile of climber, camper, and quitter students in solving mathematical problems. The subjects were three students of VIII grade junior high school who represented each AQ category and had good communication skills. The instrument used was the ARP questionnaire, mathematics problem solving tests, and interview guidelines. The results shows that students’ critical thinking profile in understanding the problem is climber and camper student do all indicators of critical thinking in the clarification phase. Quitter student is only able mentioning known and asked information. In devising a plan, climber student implements all indicators of assessment and strategy phase. Camper student implements all indicators in assessment phase, but do not discuss the possible steps in strategy phase. Quitter student does not do both assessment and strategy phase. In carrying out the plan, climber and camper students do all indicators of inference phase, while quitter student does not. The article deals with the psychoemotional state of students when studying the modules "Integral calculus" and "Differential equations" in the course of higher mathematics. The factors that affect the degree of assimilation of educational material by first-year students are described, and the causes of emotional (psychological) stress are noted. The study is confirmed by an empirical description, which was conducted using the "colour painting" technique, first used to assess the psychoemotional state of first-year students when studying sections of the higher mathematics course. The proposed method makes it possible to "see" the mood of students on each topic of the module, to track the dynamics of emotional states in the team on the topics of each module and the overall picture of the mood of each individual in the student group. Colour matrix allows recording the emotional response to events (for the authors of the article, these are modules of the course) and finding out how it was perceived by students, who of them is experiencing difficulties. The study of the psychoemotional state of respondents was conducted by means of a questionnaire, where the authors were interested in how the study materials on the topic "Integral calculus" and "Differential equations"affect the students' health/mood. Based on the analysis, the most difficult topics for learning modules were identified, and recommendations were given on their possible forms and methods of teaching.

Developing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills of students as rapidly as possible is a key requirement in improving learning outcomes at every stage of their degree. The Department of Physics at the University of Liverpool has entirely redeveloped years 1 and 2 of the undergraduate degree with a focus on students becoming independent learners as early as possible. The aims are to better integrate the undergraduate teaching provision and to complete the Institute of Physics core curriculum in years 1 and 2, in order to focus on research led teaching and independent projects in years 3 and 4. This new programme, entitled New Physics, starts in Welcome Week with the Undergraduate Physics Olympics and continues through the Year 1 Project (Mission to Mars) in the first week of semester one. The aim is to set the standard for collaborative achievement and introduce students to the way that physicists think. Innovative problem solving classes incorporating active learning such as peerassessment,group learning and exemplars designed to improve these skills andenhance the quality of learning among its first-year students have been introduced.
