This paper explores the association between common facility space occupancy and spatial configuration and aims to have higher space occupancy by spatial design. The spatial configuration includes geometric metrics and topologic metrics from Space syntax theory.The association between space occupancy and spatial configuration in twelve nursing homes is evaluated using the multiple linear regression model. The results show that spatial integration, connectivity, and area size are significant factors to space occupancy correlation. Therefore, allocating space with higher spatial integration, more connectivity, and the large area size are three effective ways to increase space occupancy in Japanese nursing homes. This article analyzes changes of common space spatial characteristics in Japanese nursing homes in the past 35 years, aims to provide a reference for future common space design. The analysis is done by using Space Syntax theory. Totally 62 nursing homes from Japanese architecture publications are selected and analyzed. The analysis shows that compared with classical large-scale care nursing homes, the spatial integration of community space in modern unit care nursing homes is increased by 15%, but service station and dining room are reduced about 10% and 13%, which indicates the spatial importance of community space in modern nursing homes. The research aims to examine the spatial dominance by evaluating the relationship between the spatial configuration of streets network andthe proportion of pedestrians. In analyzing the street networks in Space Syntax, thequestion arises; to what extent the movement and activity may explain street integration among gender-based pedestrians. Theresult found that there is a correlation between spatial configurative analyses and women present in the streets -the more integrated and localized streetsattract more women pedestrians compared to the men. The research is relevant to spatial design interventions and policymaking to improve the gender-equal access to public space. Understanding crime has been in focus for a few decades. Significant research has begun to understand the relationship between spatial configuration and crime occurrence, which related back to human behaviour. In recent year, space syntax has been used as a method to analyse space and its spatial properties. Urban design researchers have employed the space syntax technique to analyse the geographic distribution of crime due to spatial and socio-demographic factors that could influence crime patterns. This paper describes how space syntax could be used to assess crime possibility in heritage areas, and the result supports the hypothesis. This article analyzes the spatial layout in Japanese nursing homes, and to clarify the core space and spatial characteristics of the common facility. By using the Space Syntax DepthMapX tool, we analyzed 62 nursing homes from Japanese architecture publications. Then, we use the spatial integration metric to identify the core space and transition of the common core facilities. The result shows the core space changed from the corridor in the 1980s to the hall nowadays; the community space and physical training room have also become the common core facility in Japanese nursing homes. This contribution investigates the correlation between street noise levels and the spatial configuration of the street network in four different types of neighbourhoods in the Algerian city of Biskra. Space syntax methods are used to analyse spatial relationships, where accessibility, intelligibility, and legibility of urban spaces can be evaluated. The degree of spatial integration is used as an accessibility indicator and is correlated with recorded noise level data at 154 points from the selected neighbourhoods. As the results show, there are strong correlations between spatial integration and recorded sound pressures on streets and roads in colonial and unplanned neighbourhoods. The reason is that these types of neighbourhoods have a street network with high correlations between street connectivity and global spatial integration. There are weak correlations between connectivity and global spatial integration throughout the modern planned neighbourhood, which again affects the correlation between noise and space. The experiment shows that space syntax methods have the potential to predict degrees of accessibility and orientability for people with visual impairments in urban planning.

Natural surveillance strategy in public areas can be established with high crowd engagement. Consideration of the type of pathway layout of green roof would determine the rate of public engagement, thus creating a safe environment for people to use the facility. Application of Space Syntax allows the analysis in determining pathway design layout with the highest rate of traffic engagement. Comparing a similar number of nodes and axial lines shows that axial line with more intersecting points creates more possibility of human interaction, higher crowd engagement thus functioning as natural surveillance in green roof setting. This research examines the quality of streets and public life among women through observation. Axial analysis models are combined into Space Syntax to hypothesize the effect of grid layout on street vitality and sociability in shopping streets by using global and local integration to measure how women use the space. The distribution of crime is not uniform across either time or space and believed influenced by environmental design. This study examines the layout and identifies the risky space in a residential area of Kuala Lumpur. Four space syntax parameters and three years of burglary data analysed across two neighbourhoods. The correlation between the burglary rate and the parameter value carried out to identify the relationship. Results show a significant relationship between visibility parameter and burglary rate while there were similarities temporal patterns for both study areas. As an outcome of a comprehensive study on an area of 385.401 acres, a township in Alor Gajah, Malacca, was redesigned based on an innovative idea, ‘concept of night city’. The concept is believed to be economically viable. By using space syntax, an analysis of movement as well as the amount of activity likely to result from the movement is performed on the layout to determine if the redesign functions successfully. Results of the spatial analyses showed improvements in connectivity, integration, intelligibility and synergy levels. Based on the findings, the future town of Alor Gajah looks viable spatially. Spatial and spatio-visual analysis are space syntax analysis techniques that examine spatial configuration with graphs and numeric data. This study is based on spatial and spatio-visual analyses of traditional residences and comparison of these analyses. The historically and strategically important city of Bitlis in eastern Turkey was chosen as the study area. The most important structures that constitute the historical urban fabric within this protected area are the traditional residences in Bitlis. The spatial integration values obtained by the accessibility graphs and the visual integration values obtained by the visibility graphs are compared in 15 traditional residences plans using space syntax analysis techniques. For “accessibility” graphs, “Agraph” software and for “visibility” graphs, “Depthmap” software were used. Both programs are based on the theoretical and conceptual basis of space syntax analysis techniques. This research is important in terms of interpreting the existence of social and cultural information as well as environmental factors behind the space configuration of Bitlis traditional residences by examining them using scientific data.
