This article examines the effect of metacognitive instruction on students' achievement in introductory programming courses over traditional predictors of performance. Metacognitive instruction was conceptualized as a package, aimed at inducing students to develop a metacognitive strategy relevant for computer programming via interactive teaching. The metacognitive strategy consisted of a five-step planning strategy to guide students' program planning process. The interactive teaching approach involved explicit modeling, coaching and collaborative learning. An experimental field study conducted with twenty-eight experimental and twenty-eight matched control students revealed that metacognitive instruction is a better explanatory construct for students' computing performance than traditional person variables such as background knowledge, program major, gender or age. The impact of metacognitive instruction on the learning processes and outcomes of students with different personal characteristics was systematically examined.

Street children become one of the problems that exist today, so it needs non-formal education efforts through its programs to overcome these problems. To get maximum educational results, a non-formal education program planning strategy is needed for these street children. This study aims to analyze the planning process of non-formal education programs for street children in Klinik Jalanan Samarinda. This study uses a qualitative approach because it will reveal how the non-formal education program planning process is for street children. This type of research is a descriptive study that will produce a description of the focus of the research conducted. Data collection techniques using interviews, observation, and study of documents. While the data analysis technique uses data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The analyzing the validity of the data using data triangulation. The results of the study revealed that the planning process carried out by the Klinik Jalanan Samarinda was divided into several processes including the approach to street children as a means of learning citizens. The next process is identifying the learning needs of street children to design non-formal education programs such as what is suitable for street children. Next is the preparation of learning to get an agreement with street children because street children have their preoccupations, so the need for an agreement on the time and place for the implementation of learning.

Learning programming can be challenging, particularly object-oriented programming (OOP). However, using visualization could be useful in enhancing students' learning OOP concepts. In this study, the impact of using a 3D visual programming tool – Alice 2 – on student performance and attitude was explored in an introductory computer programming course using Java. Research participants were undergraduate computing students at Arab Open University – Jordan branch. Quasi-experimental design was adopted in this research, where two groups of students were chosen. The findings of this research showed that using Alice has positively impacted on students' performance and attitude towards computer programming and learning OOP concepts. The study suggests the incorporation of Alice in teaching introductory programming courses.

This research aims to determine the management of campus-based mosques in improving community empowerment, through the planning process, organizing, actuating, and controlling of activities in building cooperation with the community, so that all the empowerment carried out by DKM mosques can run effectively and efficiently. The method used in this research uses descriptive methods with a qualitative approach. The research at the Al-Jabbar Mosque in the ITB Jatinangor Campus can be obtained from the management data of the Al-Jabbar mosque covering several stages in arranging the planned program of activities. There are several steps used in empowering the community through the Al-Jabbar mosque in accordance with the management functions used. First is program planning carried out by the DKM Al-Jabbar mosque in improving community empowerment. Second, organizing is applied to the division of work tasks to DKM administrators. Third, the implementation is implemented through guidance, giving motivation to the board, having a relationship. Then the last is the supervision applied by the Al-Jabbar DKM mosque through direct and indirect supervision.

This study reports a pre-experimental research on the impact of metacognitive instruction on EFL learners’ metacognitive awareness and their listening performance. To obtain the goal of the study, a group of 30 Iranian intermediate EFL learners, including 14 males and 16 females, were selected randomly. Their ages range from 20 to 24. The participants took part in 16 weeks’ intervention program based on metacognitive pedagogical sequence consisted of five stages. The metacognitive awareness listening questionnaire (MALQ), and a listening test were also used to find changes in metacognitive awareness and listening performance before and after the treatment. The results of comparing pre and posttests scores revealed that metacognitive instruction raised the learners’ metacognitive awareness and helped them improve their listening comprehension ability.

This chapter explores the effect of the interplay of personal characteristics and news coverage on issue salience during the 2009 to 2015 period and during the election campaign in 2013. We selected four topics that played a considerable role during this period: the labor market, pensions and healthcare, immigration, and the financial crisis. The evidence from pooled cross-sectional data and panel data supports the notion that news coverage affects citizens’ issue salience. For obtrusive issues, news coverage does not play as large a role as for rather remote topics like the financial crisis and immigration. The results also lend credence to the idea that political predilections and other individual differences are related to issue salience and constrain the impact of news coverage on voters’ issue salience. However, the evidence for the interplay of individual differences and media coverage proved mild at best.
