There can be a rich exchange of information and techniques between gerontologists and oral historians working with the elderly. Oral history provides a way of making concrete one's experiences and wisdom and of creating from them a heritage to hand down to one's family and communal heirs. There are great therapeutic benefits or enhancement-of-life benefits to the narrators doing an oral history. Benefits are directly in proportion to how rigorous a historical effort it is, and therefore, the less “therapeutic” the goal, the more therapeutic the result will be.

Background: Arginine is considered a semi-essential amino acid in healthy adults and the elderly. This amino acid seems to improve the immune system, stimulate cell growth and differentiation, and increase endothelial permeability, among other effects. For those reasons, it has been theorized that arginine supplementation may be used as an adjuvant to conventional cancer therapy treatments. Objective: This review aims to evaluate the existing knowledge of the scientific community on arginine supplementation in order to improve the efficacy of current cancer treatment. Results: Despite the continued efforts of science to improve treatment strategies, cancer remains one of the greatest causes of death on the planet in adults and elderly people. Chemo and radiotherapy are still the most effective treatments but at the cost of significant side effects. Conclusion: Thus, new therapeutic perspectives have been studied in recent years, to be used in addition to traditional treatments or not, seeking to treat or even cure the various types of cancer with fewer side effects.

There is a long history of using videogames in a therapeutic capacity including rehabilitation for stroke patients, people with traumatic brain injuries, burns victims, wheelchair users, Erb's palsy sufferers, children undergoing chemotherapy, children with muscular dystrophy, autistic children and individuals looking to overcome real-life challenges (including symptoms of depression) and boost their wellbeing (including boosting life satisfaction, self-efficacy and social support). This paper briefly and selectively examines a number of areas including: (1) videogames as physiotherapy and occupational therapy, (2) videogames as distractors in the role of pain management, (3) videogames and cognitive rehabilitation, (4) videogames and the development of social and communication skills among the learning disabled, (5) videogames and impulsivity/attention deficit disorders, (6) videogames and therapeutic benefits in the elderly, (7) videogames in psychotherapeutic settings, (8) videogames and health care, (9) videogames and anxiety disorders, and (10) videogames and psychological wellbeing. It is concluded that there has been considerable success when games are specifically designed to address a specific problem or to teach a certain skill. However, generalizability outside the game-playing situation remains an important consideration.

ABSTRACTThe population aging has brought social issues of great repercussion, among them try to identify the role of caregiver, as humanizing agent, in this dynamic process of aging was the challenge that gave rise to this study. The attempt of our project is to give importance to the history of the Elderly Life, valuing it as a unique, experiencing your opportunity to speak and be heard, approaching caregiver and elderly and involving them in a therapeutic process.RESUMOO envelhecimento populacional têm trazido questões sociais de grande repercussão, dentre eles procurar identificar o papel do cuidador, como agente humanizador, neste processo dinâmico do envelhecimento foi o desafio que originou este estudo. A tentativa do nosso projeto é dar importância à História de Vida do Idoso, valorizando-o como ser único, experenciando sua oportunidade de falar e ser ouvido, aproximando cuidador e idoso e envolvendo-os num processo terapêutico.

This study examines the effects on elderly worriers, of a focus group discussion about the topic of worry. All subjects ( N = 21) were self-designated worriers, and at least seventy years of age. Pretest and Posttest measures included questionnaires on worry, life satisfaction, and psychological symptom domains unrelated to the focus group topic. The percentage of the day spent worrying variable, which was the criterion variable for admittance into the groups, showed a significant reduction from pre to post. The focus group participants also evaluated the focus group experience as positive and beneficial. The value of focus groups for therapeutic effectiveness and data collection with the elderly are discussed.

It is not unbeknownst to us that since the very onset of the COVID-19 outbreak, many patients from different age groups have suffered greatly, and in a remarkable number of cases, succumbed to their untimely demise as a result of infection with the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV- -2. The elderly are perhaps the most vulnerable community, who stand at the pinnacle of morbidity and mortality rates due to contracting severe forms of COVID-19. Hopefully, based on the recent findings and the present evidence, there might be a number of medications that would possibly be of great prophylactic and therapeutic value to the elderly patients diagnosed with COVID-19. According to an interventional study, Thymosin α1 is arguably one such medication that has recently been indicated to be an effective therapeutic agent for inpatient management of lymphocytopenia and T cell exhaustion caused by COVID-19.

Music is often employed as a therapeutic tool for individuals with dementia, facilitating memory recall, fluent speech and recovery of other cognitive and noncognitive abilities. There are several current discussions of the mechanisms that underlie these therapeutic effects, but no integrative model that can account for the benefits of music on multiple levels of analysis. Thompson and Schlaug (2015) proposed that seven capacities of music may be especially relevant to its therapeutic value for a range of neurological conditions; namely, that music is persuasive, engaging, emotional, personal, physical, and social, and that it encourages synchronization in rhythm and pitch. This chapter elaborates on this model by considering how each of these seven attributes of music has therapeutic benefits for people with dementia.

Improved means of cancer prevention and treatment remain key goals of global health programmes. This is particularly true in Western society, where the elderly represent a large proportion of the population, and where the likelihood of tumour development is compounded by risk factors such as poor fibre/high fat diets and environmental pollution. Dietary intervention represents an attractive, non-invasive means of providing anticancer preventative and therapeutic benefits to at-risk individuals. This review focuses on the evidence for anticancer properties of bovine milk and milk-derived components. Evidence of a role for whole milk constituents, as well as purified minor components, in combating tumorigenesis is outlined. Shortcomings in current studies are highlighted, and future opportunities for targeted research to characterize important anticancer properties of milk are discussed.

Experimental studies disagree on the frequency and effects of reminiscence among the elderly. However, efficacy in working with recollection can be increased by an understanding of three types of reminiscence: informative, evaluative and obsessive. Informative reminiscence involves recollection for the pleasure of reliving and retelling. Reviewing memories can be used to revive interest, self-esteem, and personal relationships. Evaluative reminiscence is based on Butler's life review. A more favorable resolution is likely when it ranges over the lifetime and is shared. Groups and oral history projects can be tailored to support informative and evaluative reminiscences. Obsessive reminiscence may result from guilt, stress or grief. Relieving stress and finding new outlets can be combined with techniques like psychodrama and Progoff's journal workshop, to work through obstructing experiences.
