Improved means of cancer prevention and treatment remain key goals of global health programmes. This is particularly true in Western society, where the elderly represent a large proportion of the population, and where the likelihood of tumour development is compounded by risk factors such as poor fibre/high fat diets and environmental pollution. Dietary intervention represents an attractive, non-invasive means of providing anticancer preventative and therapeutic benefits to at-risk individuals. This review focuses on the evidence for anticancer properties of bovine milk and milk-derived components. Evidence of a role for whole milk constituents, as well as purified minor components, in combating tumorigenesis is outlined. Shortcomings in current studies are highlighted, and future opportunities for targeted research to characterize important anticancer properties of milk are discussed.

Background: Arginine is considered a semi-essential amino acid in healthy adults and the elderly. This amino acid seems to improve the immune system, stimulate cell growth and differentiation, and increase endothelial permeability, among other effects. For those reasons, it has been theorized that arginine supplementation may be used as an adjuvant to conventional cancer therapy treatments. Objective: This review aims to evaluate the existing knowledge of the scientific community on arginine supplementation in order to improve the efficacy of current cancer treatment. Results: Despite the continued efforts of science to improve treatment strategies, cancer remains one of the greatest causes of death on the planet in adults and elderly people. Chemo and radiotherapy are still the most effective treatments but at the cost of significant side effects. Conclusion: Thus, new therapeutic perspectives have been studied in recent years, to be used in addition to traditional treatments or not, seeking to treat or even cure the various types of cancer with fewer side effects.

In the present study, a novel approach for mid-infrared (IR)-based prediction of bovine milk fatty acid composition is introduced. A rapid, solvent-free, two-step centrifugation method was applied in order to obtain representative milk fat fractions. IR spectra of pure milk lipids were recorded with attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FT-IR) spectroscopy. Comparison to the IR transmission spectra of whole milk revealed a higher amount of significant spectral information for fatty acid analysis. Partial least squares (PLS) regression models were calculated to relate the IR spectra to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) reference values, providing particularly good predictions for fatty acid sum parameters as well as for the following individual fatty acids: C10:0 (R2P = 0.99), C12:0 (R2P = 0.97), C14:0 (R2P = 0.88), C16:0 (R2P = 0.81), C18:0 (R2P = 0.93), and C18:1cis (R2P = 0.95). The IR wavenumber ranges for the individual regression models were optimized and validated by calculation of the PLS selectivity ratio. Based on a set of 45 milk samples, the obtained PLS figures of merit are significantly better than those reported in literature using whole milk transmission spectra and larger datasets. In this context, direct IR measurement of the milk fat fraction inherently eliminates covariation structures between fatty acids and total fat content, which poses a common problem in IR-based milk fat profiling. The combination of solvent-free lipid separation and ATR-FT-IR spectroscopy represents a novel approach for fast fatty acid prediction, with the potential for high-throughput application in routine lab operation.

The effects of heat treatment and homogenization of whole milk on chemical changes in the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) were investigated. Heating at 80 °C for 3–18 min caused an incorporation of whey proteins, especially β-lactoglobulin (β-lg), into MFGM, thus increasing the protein content of the membrane and decreasing the lipid. SDS-PAGE showed that membrane glycoproteins, such as PAS-6 and PAS-7, had disappeared or were weakly stained in the gel due to heating of the milk. Heating also decreased free sulphydryl (SH) groups in the MFGM and increased disulphide (SS) groups, suggesting that incorporation of β-lg might be due to association with membrane proteins via disulphide bonds. In contrast, homogenization caused an adsorption of caseins to the MFGM but no binding of whey proteins to the MFGM without heating. Binding of caseins and whey proteins and loss of membrane proteins were not significantly different between milk samples that were homogenized before and after heating. Viscosity of whole milk was increased when milk was treated with both homogenization and heating.

There can be a rich exchange of information and techniques between gerontologists and oral historians working with the elderly. Oral history provides a way of making concrete one's experiences and wisdom and of creating from them a heritage to hand down to one's family and communal heirs. There are great therapeutic benefits or enhancement-of-life benefits to the narrators doing an oral history. Benefits are directly in proportion to how rigorous a historical effort it is, and therefore, the less “therapeutic” the goal, the more therapeutic the result will be.

There is a long history of using videogames in a therapeutic capacity including rehabilitation for stroke patients, people with traumatic brain injuries, burns victims, wheelchair users, Erb's palsy sufferers, children undergoing chemotherapy, children with muscular dystrophy, autistic children and individuals looking to overcome real-life challenges (including symptoms of depression) and boost their wellbeing (including boosting life satisfaction, self-efficacy and social support). This paper briefly and selectively examines a number of areas including: (1) videogames as physiotherapy and occupational therapy, (2) videogames as distractors in the role of pain management, (3) videogames and cognitive rehabilitation, (4) videogames and the development of social and communication skills among the learning disabled, (5) videogames and impulsivity/attention deficit disorders, (6) videogames and therapeutic benefits in the elderly, (7) videogames in psychotherapeutic settings, (8) videogames and health care, (9) videogames and anxiety disorders, and (10) videogames and psychological wellbeing. It is concluded that there has been considerable success when games are specifically designed to address a specific problem or to teach a certain skill. However, generalizability outside the game-playing situation remains an important consideration.

<p>Considering the need for new products to meet the portion of the population with lactase enzyme deficiency, the study processed and characterized the physical, physical-chemical and sensory parameters of a dulce de leche made with soy-based extract. The research was developed at the Food Engineering Laboratory of the Federal University of Campina Grande. The soybean milk used in the preparation of the product was the UHT type and pasteurized cow’s milk, both purchased commercially from the city of Campina Grande, PB. Three sweet formulations were prepared: the first one containing 100% whole bovine milk; the second one with 100% water-soluble soy extract and the last one with 50% water-soluble soy extract and 50% whole milk. There were significant differences in all physicochemical analyses, except for the ash one. Regarding the addition of the soybean water-soluble extract in the dulce de leche, this procedure altered the traditional flavor, resulting in less acceptance of the product and 90% of the judges declared that they would not buy that. Through the instrumental analyses, it was verified that the addition of water-soluble soybean extract changed statistically (p &lt;0.05) the characteristics of color and texture</p>

AbstractMilk is a highly complex, heterogeneous biological fluid that contains bioactive, membrane-bound extracellular vesicles called exosomes. Characterization of milk-derived exosomes (MDEs) is challenging due to the lack of standardized methods that are currently being used for milk pre-processing, exosome isolation, and RNA extraction. In this study, we tested: 1) three pre-processing methods to remove cream, fat, and casein proteins from bovine milk to determine whether pre-processing of whole milk, prior to long-term storage, improves MDE isolations, 2) two commonly-used exosome isolation methods, and 3) four extraction protocols for obtaining high quality MDE RNA from bovine and human milk. MDEs were characterized via Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA). We also present an optimized method of TEM sample preparation and isolation of total soluble protein from MDEs. Our results indicated that: 1) pre-processing of bovine milk prior to storage does not affect the final exosome yield or the purity, 2) ExoQuick precipitation is better suited for MDE isolation than ultracentrifugation for bovine and human milk, and 3) TRIzol LS produced the highest RNA yield in bovine milk, whereas TRIzol LS, TRIzol+RNA Clean and Concentrator, and TRIzol LS+RNA Clean and Concentrator methods can be used for human milk.

Whole bovine milk should not be fed to infants during the first year of life because of its association with occult gastrointestinal bleeding, iron deficiency anemia, and cow's milk allergy. The consumption of whole milk after the first year of life should be discouraged because of its potential role in a variety of disorders including atherosclerosis, recurrent abdominal pain of childhood, cataracts, milk-borne infections, and juvenile delinquency.
