Background Various online rumors have led to inappropriate behaviors among the public in response to the COVID-19 epidemic in China. These rumors adversely affect people’s physical and mental health. Therefore, a better understanding of the relationship between public emotions and rumors during the epidemic may help generate useful strategies for guiding public emotions and dispelling rumors. Objective This study aimed to explore whether public emotions are related to the dissemination of online rumors in the context of COVID-19. Methods We used the web-crawling tool Scrapy to gather data published by People’s Daily on Sina Weibo, a popular social media platform in China, after January 8, 2020. Netizens’ comments under each Weibo post were collected. Nearly 1 million comments thus collected were divided into 5 categories: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and neutral, based on the underlying emotional information identified and extracted from the comments by using a manual identification process. Data on rumors spread online were collected through Tencent’s Jiaozhen platform. Time-lagged cross-correlation analyses were performed to examine the relationship between public emotions and rumors. Results Our results indicated that the angrier the public felt, the more rumors there would likely be (r=0.48, P<.001). Similar results were observed for the relationship between fear and rumors (r=0.51, P<.001) and between sadness and rumors (r=0.47, P<.001). Furthermore, we found a positive correlation between happiness and rumors, with happiness lagging the emergence of rumors by 1 day (r=0.56, P<.001). In addition, our data showed a significant positive correlation between fear and fearful rumors (r=0.34, P=.02). Conclusions Our findings confirm that public emotions are related to the rumors spread online in the context of COVID-19 in China. Moreover, these findings provide several suggestions, such as the use of web-based monitoring methods, for relevant authorities and policy makers to guide public emotions and behavior during this public health emergency.

Communication is the sharing of information between individuals or groups to reach common understanding or goals. Ensuring effective and efficient communication is important when dealing with complex structures such as a nuclear power generation environment. This calls for a need for partnership and dialogue between major stakeholders in government, industry, employees, and the public at large. Even though communication can alarm people to seek safety, it can be used to calm employees as well as generate a sense of urgency. This chapter uses a survey to investigate the relationship between communication and 13 critical factors of lean management principles in an organization where safety is the fundamental component of the process. Data was collected and analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and regression analysis. The results show that friendliness, willingness, guarantee, criticism, self-esteem, and acceptance are positive predictors of a lean communication while responsibility is negative.

The aim of this study is to contribute to knowledge as regard the relationship between the social services and the public system for crisis preparedness as seen from the perspective of social services staff with direct contact with clients and/or first-line leaders. Empirically the study concerns the staff’s experience of severe events and of activities and processes pertaining to crisis preparedness, such as risk and vulnerability analysis, education and exercises. Further, it concerns staff’s valua- tion of major risks and of crisis preparedness as an area of operation. The material was obtained with a web based questionnaire (N=1020) with closed and open questions and with room for free text. The material was analysed in terms of frequencies and subjected to open qualitative coding. The results suggests that the staff are not involved in the activities and processes of crisis prepared- ness to a significant extent, although they seem to be motivated. They do not seem to have been given opportunities to develop an understanding of crisis preparedness and how it affects social services. They also seem to have a composite understanding of central concepts in the area of crisis preparedness such as crisis, extraordinary events, risk and vulnerability. Their understanding seems to be underpinned by considerations involving intersubjective dimensions of security. It is concluded that it would be beneficial for the system of crisis preparedness if the social servi- ces were systematically involved and differing notions of central concepts were clarified. Further, given an acknowledgement of the role of intersubjective dimensions of security the social services could contribute perspectives informed by their close contacts with users and the general popula- tion as regards risks, vulnerability and consequences of crisis and disasters. It is argued that this would contribute qualitatively to crisis preparedness as an area of operation.

Families who reside in the surrounding flood-prone areas require flood preparedness to undertake preparedness so that family members do not create new problems such as anxiety. This study aims to determine the relationship of knowledge with experience in dealing with the level of anxiety of household head anxiety. This research is a cross-sectional descriptive correlation study and the sample used in this study is 225 households. The results of the study using the Anova test showed that the knowledge and experience of dealing with floods were related to the anxiety of household heads in disaster-prone areas (p = 0.001; α = 0.05). Multivariate of results were found that the most related factor was an experience. This study recommends that the family knowledge needs to be increased through simulation training to deal with floods by involving the Regional Management Agency, the local government and the Public Health Center

Personal hygiene products are used on a daily basis by many people. Many are comparable to the Trojan horse. On the outside, they appear to be harmless. They are contained in attractive bottles and they rely on misleading ads to attract consumers. However, these products may contain potentially harmful chemicals and many people are unaware of how individuals, societies and environments are affected in the various stages of the life cycle of many personal hygiene products. Our STSE issue deals with an everyday product that falls under the Trojan horse analogy–lotion. We are concerned that our peers and other young adults are purchasing lotions without the knowledge of how they came to stand on the shelves of a store. We conducted a correlation study between gender and popular lotion brands among teenagers and the reasons behind their choices. We came to the conclusion that more females than males were interested in popular lotion brands due to enticing features that targets mainly feminine interests (e.g. scent is an aspect of lotion that more females than males consider when purchasing the brand). For our actions, we prepared an educational mind-map on our issue and a video compilation where we interviewed female students on their reactions to various lotion brand commercials. Our actions are meant to inform the public about the controversies surrounding our issue and the techniques companies use to gain the attention of potential consumers.

This paper maps the basic opposition groups that influenced the Egyptian political system in the last years of Hosni Mubarak’s rule. It approaches the nature of the relationship between the system and the opposition through use of the concept of “semi-opposition.” An examination and evaluation of the opposition groups shows the extent to which the regime—in order to appear that it was opening the public sphere to the opposition—had channels of communication with the Muslim Brotherhood. The paper also shows the system’s relations with other groups, such as “Kifaya” and “April 6”; it then explains the reasons behind the success of the Muslim Brotherhood at seizing power after the ousting of President Mubarak.
