The Psychosocial Benefits of Recreational Oncology Camp for Childhood Cancer Patients and Survivors: Study Protocol (Preprint)

BACKGROUND Patients and survivors of childhood cancer may experience negative outcomes following treatment. This may result in negative developmental experiences such as social isolation, academic delays, and altered elective participation in developmental activities. Opportunities that offer experiences to children who have had cancer are important to help mitigate the potential outcomes of cancer treatment. One such opportunity is recreational oncology camp (“Camp”); the focus of this research project is Camp Ooch and Camp Trillium located in Ontario, Canada. OBJECTIVE There are two primary objectives of the current study: 1) examine the impact of recreational overnight Camp on social, psychological, emotional, and physical function in childhood cancer patients; and 2) inform an evidence strategy that can be implemented across the organization. METHODS A total of 40 children ages 7 to 18 will be recruited from Camp Ooch and Camp Trillium registration lists. All cancer diagnoses and stages of treatments will be included. No intervention will be added above regular camp programming which participants will opt into, same as campers that are not participating in the study. A No-camp control Group (n=40) will be recruited from The Hospital for Sick Children. Social, Psychological, and emotional functioning will be assessed by questionnaires including the Social Provisions Scale, General Self Efficacy Scale, and The Profile of Mood States (POMS-40). Stress will be measured via salivary cortisol. Physical function will be measured by via activity tracking (FitBit Charge™ 3), and physical literacy will be assessed by the PlaySelf™ scale. Testing will occur pre-camp, during camp, immediately and 6 months post-camp. RESULTS We hypothesize that compared to the non-camp control group, the camp experience will lead to improved social connectedness, reduced salivary cortisol levels (i.e., reduced stress), improved mood states, and increased self-efficacy. We also hypothesize that compared to the non-camp control group, children in the camp group will have increased physical activity participation, which will be associated with improved physical literacy. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, work on this study has been delayed. We are currently completing our application for institutional research ethics approval. Depending on the COVID-19 pandemic status, data collection is projected to begin in the spring of 2021, with the majority occurring during the 2021 summer camp season. Data collection and analyses are expected to be completed by Spring 2022. CONCLUSIONS Overall, we expect the current project will increase knowledge on the psychosocial impact of childhood cancer and a prospective model for supporting positive youth development through social connections, self-efficacy, physical activity, and interaction with the natural environment. Background:: Inadequate physical activity (PA) in childhood cancer survivors may lead to compromised health outcomes. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and effect of a PA intervention in childhood cancer survivors ages 8–12 who report < 1 hour of moderate-to-vigorous physical (MVPA) per day.Methods:Twenty survivors were randomized to a 6-month group PA intervention or to a control group. A pre/post measure of MVPA was completed by all participants, and a pre/post measure of self-efficacy was completed by the intervention group. Analysis included measures of feasibility, change in percentage of awake time spent in MVPA, self-efficacy scores, and correlations in MVPA and self-efficacy.Results:All feasibility parameters were confirmed. Increases in percent of awake time spent in MVPA were seen in 67% of the intervention group and 14% of the control group. A medium effect size (r = 0.55) was calculated for the correlation between change in MVPA and change in total self-efficacy scores; the largest effect size (r = 0.62) was found for the subscale for adequacy.Conclusions:Increases in MVPA can be seen in childhood cancer survivors who participate in a group intervention that includes support of self-efficacy.

This longitudinal study investigated the effects of a mastery motivational climate in physical education (PE) classes on 2×2 achievement goal orientation and dominance, self-regulated learning (SRL), and physical activity (PA) in leisure time. A total of 408 (264 women, 144 men) university students were randomly assigned to two groups: experimental and control. For 12 weeks (24 one-hour sessions), the experimental group received an intervention programme based on TARGET model, which emphasized a mastery climate. The control group carried out the same content but without highlighting such strategies. By means of the structural equation model, true intraindividual change in relation to orientation to 2×2 achievement goals, SRL, and PA in leisure time was analyzed. An increase in different variables within the experimental group was confirmed, these being: (a) the orientation to and dominance of mastery-approach (MAp) goals at the expense of the remaining goals; (b) competences in SRL; and (c) moderate and vigorous levels of PA in their free time. In addition, intraindividual changes in the MAp goals were positively related to intraindividual changes in self-efficacy of learning, which, in turn, positively predicted intraindividual changes in PA, regardless of the group (experimental or control). Thus, the mastery climate increases the percentage of participants with a dominant MAp goal and can effectively help to promote regular habits of PA in free time, by mediation of self-efficacy in SRL.

Context: This study analyzed whether self-efficacy (SE) and perceived environmental characteristics (EC) are determinants of the decline in physical activity (PA) time in adolescents. Methods: This used longitudinal observational approach, with 4 years of data collection, involving 355 adolescents (57.7% girls and 42.3% boys), average age of 11.8 years (0.1 y), from João Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil. SE and EC were measured by scales and PA by a questionnaire. Ordinal logistic regression was used to associate SE and EC with a decline in PA. Results: There was a linear trend toward a decrease in average PA duration (58.3 [13.7] min/wk/y) and a rise in average access to places for PA (point per year) (0.6 [0.1]), urban safety (0.2 [0.1]), and traffic safety scores (0.5 [0.1]). The results of multivariable analysis indicated that SE and EC were not associated with the decline in PA. Conclusion: There was a decline in PA time, and SE and perceived EC were not determinants of this decline.

To analyze the effect of nursing measures based on self-efficacy theory on the state self-esteem of breast cancer patients. 110 breast cancer patients who were treated in our hospital from October 2018 to October 2019 were randomly divided into control group and observation group. The control group was given routine nursing measures, and the observation group was given nursing measures under the guidance of self-efficacy theory. Before operation, 1 week after operation and 3 months after operation, the general data of the two groups before and after treatment were recorded. The self-efficacy level and self-esteem level of the patients before and after treatment were assessed by the self-efficacy scale (GSEs) and state self-esteem scale (SSEs). The compliance of functional exercise and shoulder joint activity (ROM) of the two groups were compared, and the physical status of the two groups were analyzed. To analyze the effect of nursing measures based on self-efficacy theory on the state self-esteem of breast cancer patients. The GSEs score of the two groups increased with the time, and there was no significant difference between the two groups before operation (P > 0.05). After 1 week and 3 months, the GSEs score of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). The compliance evaluation table of functional exercise in the two groups increased with the time, and the compliance evaluation table of functional exercise in the observation group was significantly higher than that in the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). ROM of the two groups increased with time, and ROM of the observation group was significantly better than that of the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The self-esteem level of the two groups increased with time, and the self-esteem level of the observation group was significantly higherthan that of the control group, the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). The nursing measures under tne guidance of self-efficacy theory can help patients to complete functionalexercise, improve theirquality of life, improve their self-esteem level, a nd can be widely used in clinical practice.

This research aimed to investigate the effects of resistance exercise on symptoms, physical function, and quality of life (QoL) in gastrointestinal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Patients were quasi-randomly divided into the resistance exercise group and the relaxation control group, and machine-based resistance exercise was performed twice a week for 12 weeks under the guidance of experienced therapists. The QoL of patients was analyzed by EORTC-QLQ-C30. Resistance exercise training significantly reduced the incidences of lack of energy (inter-group P = .011), nausea (inter-group P = .007), acid reflux (inter-group P = .042), and back pain (inter-group P = .0009). Twelve weeks of resistance exercise training significantly elevated the muscular strength of leg press (inter-group P = .021) and leg extension (inter-group P = .041), and the muscular endurance of leg press (inter-group P = .005). The participants’ performance in 6-m fast walk (inter-group P = .008), 6-m backwards walk (inter-group P = .016), and chair rise (inter-group P = .031) were dramatically improved. Fatigue (inter-group P = .024) and appetite loss (inter-group P = .012) in the resistance exercise group were significantly lower than the relaxation control group. In conclusion, the beneficial effects of resistance exercise on symptoms, physical function and QoL in gastrointestinal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy were demonstrated. Resistance exercise training reduced the incidences of nausea and acid reflux, improved physical function, and alleviated fatigue and appetite loss in gastrointestinal cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Abstract Background fear of falling and reduced fall-related self-efficacy are frequent consequences of falls and associated with poorer rehabilitation outcomes. To address these psychological consequences, geriatric inpatient rehabilitation was augmented with a cognitive behavioural intervention (“Step by Step”) and evaluated in a RCT. Methods one hundred fifteen hip and pelvic fracture patients (age = 82.5 years, 70% female) admitted to geriatric inpatient rehabilitation were randomly allocated to the intervention or control group. The intervention consisted of eight additional individual sessions during inpatient rehabilitation, one home visit and four telephone calls delivered over 2 months after discharge. Both groups received geriatric inpatient rehabilitation. Primary outcomes were fall-related self-efficacy (short falls efficacy scale-international) and physical activity as measured by daily walking duration (activPAL3™ sensor) after admission to rehabilitation, before discharge and 1-month post-intervention. Results in covariance analyses, patients in the intervention group showed a significant improvement in fall-related self-efficacy (P = 0.025, d = −0.42), but no difference in total daily walking duration (P = 0.688, d = 0.07) 1-month post-intervention compared to the control condition. Further significant effects in favour of the intervention group were found in the secondary outcomes “perceived ability to manage falls” (P = 0.031, d = 0.41), “physical performance” (short physical performance battery) (P = 0.002, d = 0.58) and a lower “number of falls” (P = 0.029, d = −0.45). Conclusions the intervention improved psychological and physical performance measures but did not increase daily walking duration. For the inpatient part of the intervention further research on the required minimum intensity needed to be effective is of interest. Duration and components used to improve physical activity after discharge should be reconsidered.

Objective The aim of this study was to determine the effect of web-based education and counselling for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus on self-efficacy, fatigue and assessment of care. Methods The study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial. The study sample consisted of 80 patients divided into two groups: the experimental group ( n = 40) and a control group ( n = 40). Randomization was performed by simple random sampling. At the beginning of the study (month 0), data-collection forms were administered to both groups. Web-based education was carried out for the first three months, and counselling and information updates were given for the next three months for the experimental group. In the intervention process, the control group just received standard care. After six months, data-collection forms were administered to both groups again. Results The mean age of the participants in the experimental and control groups was 35.58 ± 8.40 years and 39.00 ± 12.71 years, respectively. In both groups, 95% of patients were women. Wilcoxon’s test was used for within-group comparisons before and after the study. The Mann–Whitney U-test was used to evaluate the difference between the two groups before the intervention and between the two groups after the intervention. We found that there was a significant improvement in fatigue, self-efficacy and assessment of chronic illness care in the experimental group at the end of the study ( p < 0.05). Conclusions The intervention had a positive effect on self-efficacy, fatigue and satisfaction with chronic illness. In accordance with the results, similar studies should be conducted for different patient groups in order to strengthen the results.

A small group of psychiatrically institutionalized adolescents (16 boys, 11 girls) were assigned to a three-day-per-week running/aerobic exercise program or a regular physical activity class. The complete program continued over 9 weeks, with 11 subjects remaining throughout the program. Dependent measures of body-mass index, timed performance on a one-mile run, resting, exercise, and recovery heart rates, and measures of depression, mood-states, and self-efficacy were assessed pre-, mid-, and post-9-wk. treatment and at a 4-wk. follow-up. Improvements in depression, anxiety, hostility, confused thinking, and fatigue were shown in treated girls, with increases in vigor and self-efficacy for all treated subjects.

A majority of U.S. children age 6–17 years do not meet the recommended 60 min of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day. Girls are less likely to meet these daily physical activity guidelines than boys. Following a call for greater gender-relevant physical activity programming, Aggie Play, an after-school physical activity program, engaged female student athletes to serve as active role models who lead girls through high-energy activities twice a week over a school year. The purpose of this study was to explore how Aggie Play affected girls’ self-efficacy and expected enjoyment for physical activity, time spent in various physical activity intensities during free play, and fitness, relative to a control group. Results revealed that the girls participating in Aggie Play increased ratings of physical activity self-efficacy and enjoyment compared with girls at a control site. Aggie Play girls also demonstrated greater improvements on the muscle-endurance test than girls at a control site. Results are consistent with prior gender-relevant physical activity and physical education research. This study extends prior results by documenting the benefits of gender-relevant physical activity programming when led by active female role models.

Abstract Background The importance of physical activity on health is clear, but changing behaviour is difficult. Successful interventions aiming to improve physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour is therefore of importance. The aim of this study was to evaluate effects on motivation, self-efficacy and barriers to change behaviour from two different behavioural intervention focusing either on reducing sedentary behaviour or on increasing physical activity as compared to a waiting list control group. Methods The study was designed as a cluster randomized control trial (RCT) within two private companies. Self-efficacy, motivation and perceived barriers were together with demographic variables assessed before and after a 6-month intervention. Participant cluster teams were randomly allocated to either the physical activity intervention (iPA), the sedentary behaviour intervention (iSED), or control group. The intervention was multi componential and included motivational counselling based on Cognitive behaviour therapy and Motivational interviewing, group activities and management involvement. Group differences were determined using Bayesian multilevel modelling (parameter estimate; credible interval (CI)), analysing complete cases and those who adhered to the protocol by adhering to at least 3 out of 5 intervention sessions. Results After the intervention, the complete cases analysis showed that the iPA group had significantly higher autonomous motivation (0.33, CI: 0.05–0.61) and controlled motivation (0.27, CI: 0.04–0.51) for physical activity compared with the control group. The iSED group scored less autonomous and controlled motivation compared to the iPA group (0.38, CI: − 0.69- -0.087 respectively − 0.32, CI: − 0.57-0.07) but no significant differences compared with the control group. Among individuals that adhered to the protocol, the results showed higher scores on Exercise (3.03, CI: 0.28–6.02) and Sedentary self-efficacy (3.59, CI: 0.35–7.15) for individuals in the iPA group and on Sedentary self-efficacy (4.77, CI: 0.59–9.44) for the iSED group compared to the control group. Conclusion These findings indicate that the interventions were successful in increasing self-efficacy in each intervention group and autonomous motivation for exercise in the iPA group, in particular when actively participating in the motivational counselling sessions.
