BACKGROUND Caregiver burden associated with dementia-related agitation is one of the most common reasons a community-dwelling person living with dementia (PLWD) transitions to a care facility. The Behavioral and Environmental Sensing and Intervention (BESI) for Dementia Caregiver Empowerment system uses sensing technology, smartwatches, tablets, and data analytics to detect and predict agitation in PLWD and to provide just-in-time notifications and dyad-specific intervention recommendations to caregivers. The BESI system has shown that there is a valid relationship between dementia-related agitation and environmental factors and that caregivers prefer a home-based monitoring system. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to obtain input from caregivers of PLWD on the value, usability, and acceptability of the BESI system in the home setting as well as their recommendations and insights for the next stage of system development. Methods. A descriptive qualitative design with thematic analysis was used to analyze ten semi-structured interviews with caregivers. A medical case study model was introduced to incorporate clinical and qualitative data and better inform the intervention recommendations piloted. METHODS A descriptive qualitative design with thematic analysis was used to analyze ten semi-structured interviews with caregivers. A medical case study model was introduced to incorporate clinical and qualitative data and better inform the intervention recommendations piloted. RESULTS Post-deployment caregiver feedback about the BESI system and the overall experience was generally positive. Caregivers acknowledged the acceptability of the system by noting ease of use and saw the system as a fit for them. Functionality issues such as timeliness in agitation notification and simplicity in the selection of agitation descriptors on the tablet interface were identified. Caregivers indicated a desire for more word options to describe agitation behaviors. Caregivers reported mild to moderate burden with caring for their PLWD but did not report significant distress. Agitation intervention suggestions were positively received in the caregiver interviews. Case study analyses showed that the intervention suggestions were well received and the decreased number of agitations helped confirm that BESI has good value and acceptability. The categories of ‘caregiver needs’ and ‘interpersonal communication’ were both received equally positively. Agitation scores, caregiver distress, caregiver depression, and stage of dementia in the PLWD were judged pertinent. Thematic analysis suggested a cascade of subjective experiences and yielded the themes of Usefulness and Helpfulness. CONCLUSIONS Caregiver acceptance of this developing technology was consistently demonstrated by tolerance, commitment to its use, and in feedback received on ways to improve the system. The themes of Usefulness and Helpfulness were discerned thematically and support the use of caregiver knowledge and experience to inform further development of the technology. The case study method provided helpful insights for the research team in determining associations between clinical data, sensor data, and the just-in-time notifications and intervention recommendations.

A prototype medical device and protocol that work well in a clinic would not necessarily work reliably in the home setting. The goal of this work is to identify factors to consider when translating a device evaluated in a clinic for use by home caregivers providing chronic wound care for persons living with dementia. One must consider the current device, the associated bundle, the protocol and how they may need to be modified. Semi-structured interviews with the research assistants who have applied a prototype device were conducted to generate a list of known issues with the current clinical protocol in terms of ultrasound application The researchers performed a set of specified tasks by following the current device protocol and explaining any difficulties with use\execution. They embellished the descriptions with details about what had happened with actual patients in the clinic. Using thematic analysis, analysts identified themes and subthemes. Issues potentially relevant to translating medical devices to the home are discussed.

The important mediating influence of Coach Educators (CEs) delivering a programme of learning has been largely ignored in research seeking to find the key to effective CPD. This paper aims to bring CEs to the fore by reporting the experiences of 7 CEs and 2 Programme Managers delivering a sport National Governing Body coach development programme. Qualitative data were collected via semi-structured interviews and interpreted through the theoretical lens of relational interdependence (Billett, 2008) using a retroductive research strategy. The findings identified the subjective and idiosyncratic processes through which CEs developed their understanding of the programme resulting in individual differences in construal. The high degree of workplace affordance gave CEs autonomy to deploy their personal agency and intentionality to shape practice leading to wide variations in CPD delivery. The results suggest the subjectivity of CEs can have a potentially significant impact on the fidelity of the programme being delivered.

This study was conducted in response to the lack of green office buildings in Malaysia, despite the fact that the green concept has been initiated in Malaysia for many years. The Penang State Government has taken the initiative to establish the Penang Green Council (PGC) as the first state in Malaysia, and the implementation of green offices is one of its programme initiatives. Nonetheless, green offices are still in scarcity across Penang. This study identified the challenges faced in implementing green offices. Data were collected from five green building owners using semi-structured interviews and the data were analysed using thematic analysis. The outcomes revealed that the main challenges faced by green office adoption were lack of budget, lack of awareness, lack of expertise, ownership factor, and type of building. This study offers several implications for practitioners and policy makers to improve the adoption of green office in Malaysia. The results may be applied to raise awareness amongst practitioners and office owners regarding green practices in office buildings. The study outcomes may serve as reference to policy makers on enhancing the development of green buildings.

In this chapter, the construct of operant resource is explored in the context of young independent travel. The main purposes of the study are to analyze young travelers' perceptions about independent travel and operant resources that contribute the most to its success. A qualitative design was adopted, given the explorative nature of the research. Online semi-structured interviews were conducted to a sample of young travelers, using the snowball sampling procedure. Qualitative data analysis was conducted subsequently and main findings indicate that freedom, being in control, and authenticity are predominant feelings within this sample. They also show that most valued operant resources in the context of independent travel are informational and human. Conclusions drawn contribute to a better understanding of independent travel by youths and may help tourism businesses and destinations to strategically approach this market segment.

This study was conducted with a team of senior managers at a Korean shipyard in an effort to elicit particular motivators for implementing management by walking around (MBWA). To identify the key motivators and communication issues associated with them, a theoretical framework was produced based on the key tensions of social psychology of communication and upward communication as well as modern organizational theories. For this qualitative research analysis, 12 semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face with the executives; the data were then supplemented by five field observations during MBWAs at the shipyard. Coding frame was used to organize modal salient themes for thematic analysis. The organizational and individual motivators identified were then analyzed in-depth to elicit communicational factors underlying these motivators. While identifying 10 salient motivators as organizing themes, the research concludes that MBWA is a contingent management strategy intended to promote upward communication within organizations.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a British Academy funded project that investigated the knowledge sharing activities of volunteers within three Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) festivals. Design/methodology/approach – Three case study festivals were selected based on factors such as longevity and size. Rich qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews with volunteers in key festival roles and focus groups with a range of other volunteers. Findings – A range of inhibitors and enablers to sharing festival knowledge were identified, some of which have not yet featured in the knowledge management (KM) literature. Riege's categorisation of individual, organisational and technological barriers to knowledge sharing was used to frame discussion of the findings. Research limitations/implications – Volunteer-led festivals are a novel context for knowledge sharing research yet the principles of volunteer working and the project-based approach to most festivals means they are a fertile arena for lessons in KM. Practical implications – Insights into knowledge sharing activities were generated from this study which could improve KM practices in festivals. They included the use of the master-apprentice model, raising the value of post-project reviews and designing festival layout with knowledge sharing in mind. Originality/value – The study of knowledge sharing is an original contribution to the field of event management.
