A crack removal has the purpose to stop crack propagation and prevent future crack reinitiation, thus fatigue life of the component is extended. A profile design for the removal of fatigue cracks that grow under bending loading is presented. The design is based on the preferred shape development of surface defects under bending loading. Preferred shape development of surface defects was experimentally identified and validated with observations previously reported by other authors. The design of a crack removal profile consists on determining a notch geometry and its dimensions to cut out a crack. The crack removal profile presented here induces crack reinitiation, if it would occur, on the surface plate at the notch ends rather than in the bottom of the notch, so original plate thickness is reinstalled for propagation and inspection is easier. This repair procedure is recommended for the removal of fatigue cracks in tubular joints of offshore jackets steel structures.

The paper researches the free vibration of a rectangular plate with one or more cracks. The plate thickness varies along the x-axis with linear rules. Using Shi's third-order shear deformation theory and phase field theory to set up the equilibrium equations, which are solved by finite element methods. The frequency of free vibration plates is calculated and compared with the published articles, the agreement between the results is good. Then, the paper will examine the free vibration frequency of plate depending on the change of the plate thickness ratio, the length of cracks, the number of cracks, the location of cracks and different boundary conditions

This research deals with the choice of the suitable filler metal to weld the similar and dissimilar metals (Low carbon steel type A516 & Austenitic stainless steel type 316L) under constant conditions such as, plate thickness (6 mm), voltage (78 v), current (120 A), straight polarity. This research deals with three major parts. The first parts Four types of electrodes were used for welding of dissimilar metals (C.St A516 And St.St 316L) two from mild steel (E7018, E6013) and other two from austenitic stainless steel (E309L, E308L) various inspection were carried out include (Visual T., X-ray T., δ- Ferrite phase T., and Microstructures T.) and mechanical testing include (tensile T., bending T. and micro hardness T.) The second parts done by used the same parameters to welding similar metals from (C.St A516) Or (St.St 316L). The third parts deals with welding of dissimilar weldments (C.St And St.St) by two processes, gas tungsten are welding (GTAW) and shielded metal are welding (SMAW).        The results indicated that the spread of carbon from low carbon steel to the welding zone in the case of welding stainless steel elect pole (E309L) led to Configuration Carbides and then high hardness the link to high values ​​compared with the base metal. In most similar weldments showed hardness of the welding area is  higher than the hardness of the base metal. The electrode (E309L) is the most suitable to welding dissimilar metals from (C.St A516 With St.St 316L). The results also showed that the method of welding (GTAW) were better than the method of welding (SMAW) in dissimilar welded joints (St.St 316L with C.St A516) in terms of irregular shape and integrity of the welding defects, as well as characterized this weldments the high-lift and resistance ductility good when using the welding conditions are similar.

In this work, the resistance and deformation characteristics of a brittle material against rain erosion are examined by using the non-linear, explicit software LS-DYNA. The water jet with varying speeds impinges at 90° on silica float glass plates with different thicknesses. In the simulations, the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian method is used for modelling of the water. In order to analyse the deformations on the brittle material Johnson–Holmquist–Ceramics (JH-2) is used as the material model. Minimum plate thickness (for constant water jet speed) and maximum water speed (for constant plate thickness), which do not cause any damage to the target, are determined depending on the geometry, boundary conditions and assumed failure strain value for erosion. The results are compared with the water-hammer pressure.

The paper deals with the problem of stress concentration at the weld toe of a plate T-joint subjected to axial, bending, and shearing loading modes. Theoretical stress concentration factors were obtained from numerical simulations using the finite element method for several thousand geometrical cases, where five of the most important geometrical parameters of the joint were considered to be independent variables. For each loading mode—axial, bending, and shearing—highly accurate closed form parametric expression has been derived with a maximum percentage error lower than 2% with respect to the numerical values. Validity of each approximating formula covers the range of dimensional proportions of welded plate T-joints used in engineering applications. Two limiting cases are also included in the solutions—when the weld toe radius tends to zero and the main plate thickness becomes infinite.

AbstractPenetration and non-penetration lap laser welding is the joining method for assembling side facade panels of railway passenger cars, while their fatigue performances and the difference between them are not completely understood. In this study, the fatigue resistance and failure behavior of penetration 1.5+0.8-P and non-penetration 0.8+1.5-N laser welded lap joints prepared with 0.8 mm and 1.5 mm cold-rolled 301L plates were investigated. The weld beads showed a solidification microstructure of primary ferrite with good thermal cracking resistance, and their hardness was lower than that of the plates. The 1.5+0.8-P joint exhibited better fatigue resistance to low stress amplitudes, whereas the 0.8+1.5-N joint showed greater resistance to high stress amplitudes. The failure modes of 0.8+1.5-N and 1.5+0.8-P joints were 1.5 mm and 0.8 mm lower lap plate fracture, respectively, and the primary cracks were initiated at welding fusion lines on the lap surface. There were long plastic ribs on the penetration plate fracture, but not on the non-penetration plate fracture. The fatigue resistance stresses in the crack initiation area of the penetration and non-penetration plates calculated based on the mean fatigue limits are 408 MPa and 326 MPa, respectively, which can be used as reference stress for the fatigue design of the laser welded structures. The main reason for the difference in fatigue performance between the two laser welded joints was that the asymmetrical heating in the non-penetration plate thickness resulted in higher residual stress near the welding fusion line.
