Purpose Integrating the transactional model of stress with risk analysis perspectives and death awareness theory, this paper aims to explore how job-related risks and the experience of a critical job injury influence work stress and withdrawal intentions for workers in dangerous occupations, as well as the relationship between stress and job performance. Design/methodology/approach The study relies on survey and archival data from Mexican police officers, taking into account the occupational and national context. Findings The results showed differences between officers who had or had not been injured in the line of duty and a complex stress-performance relationship for the former group. Officers who had been injured reported higher job-related risks and work stress. Also, for them, work stress had a direct, positive relationship with job performance, as well as an indirect, negative relationship with such outcome through work withdrawal intentions. Research limitations/implications The uniqueness of the setting may present problems with generalisability, but the study provides a rich contextual description to guide scholars and practitioners. The complex work stress – job performance relationship implies that managers can assess and use workers’ construction of danger and risk to improve their work performance, but that they should be mindful of potential adverse repercussions on work withdrawal. Originality/value The study informs the transactional model of stress and the monolithic model of police culture, affirms the role of perception of resources to manage risk and stress in dangerous occupations, introduces the role of mortality cues in shaping risk perceptions and points to the benefits of performance metrics in risk and work stress research.

This article aims to determine the influence of workload and quality of work life on the performance of police officers at Korlantas Police Headquarters with job satisfaction as an intervening variable. The research sample was 249 police officers at Korlantas Mabes indonesian police. The sample selection method uses probability sampling techniques. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires. The questionnaire used was tested for validity and reliability first, before entering the further analysis stage. Analysis of research data using SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) with processing program AMOS software. The results showed that workload has no effect on job satisfaction and work performance while quality work of life has positive and significant effect on job satisfaction and work performance. Meanwhile, job satisfaction has positive and significant effect on job performance. Job satisfaction has no mediating effect on the relationship between workload and performance of temporary employees job satisfaction was found have a mediating effect on the relationship between quality work of life and employee performance. Kata kunci: stres kerja, performa kerja, motivasi berprestasi   Abstract   The work performance of members of the Police determines the good and bad quality of service to the community. In carrying out their duties, police officers need to manage work stress so that they can achieve the desired work performance. This study aims to analyze the relationship between work stress and work performance which is moderated by achievement motivation. The design of this research is correlational quantitative research. Determination of the subject using accidental sampling. The subjects of this study were 341 Blitar police officers with a sample of 150 people. The scale used to measure stress is the New Job Stress Scale, a scale to measure the work performance of the Individual Work Performance Questionnaire, and in measuring achievement motivation using the Mcclelland Theory with achievement motivation scale. Analysis of the data used in this study is Hayes analysis. Based on the results of the analysis showed a positive and significant relationship between work stress and work performance. From the results of the analysis of the three variables, the decision β = 0.616 with p = 0.00 was made, achievement motivation moderates the relationship between work stress and work performance.   Keywords: job stress, work performance, achievement motivation

In a field study conducted in a multi-ethnic selection setting at the Dutch police, we examined the construct validity of a video-based situational judgment test (SJT) aimed to measure the construct of integrity. Integrity is of central importance to productive work performance of police officers. We used a sample of police applicants, which consisted of a Dutch ethnic majority group and an ethnic minority group. The ethnic minority applicants came from one of the four largest ethnic minority groups in The Netherlands, namely groups with a Dutch Antillean, a Moroccan, a Surinamese, or a Turkish background. A critical issue is the often-found construct-heterogeneity of SJTs. However, we found that a construct-driven approach may be fruitful in the development of SJTs aiming to measure one single construct. Confirming our expectations, we found support for the construct validity of the SJT intended to measure the construct of integrity. These results held across ethnic majority and ethnic minority applicants. Therefore, the SJT is a promising test for personnel selection in a multi-ethnic setting.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) for Korean policemen that included protective clothing, a helmet, and a shield were evaluated and redesigned based on ergonomic principles. Major functional improvements were made by reduction of equipment weight, reduction of heat stress through improvement of equipment ventilation, and improvement of usability and safety. Redesigned prototype models were made for the protective equipments. The redesigned three components of PPE are helped to enhance work performance and job safety of police officers for anti-riot operation. Currently a helmet company is trying to export newly designed helmet to other countries.

This study investigated the relationship between measures of college education and work performance for a cohort of 84 police officers over a 10-year period. College education variables showed a statistically significant relationship with promotions (average r = .31), and supervisory ratings of job knowledge (average r = .25). However, there was an inconsistent relationship with measures of disciplinary action. These patterns of relationships may indicate that college education is relevant to many aspects of police work but should not be assumed to predict all areas of job performance.

Industrial injury and, conversely, chronic illness have well-described consequences on work performance, including the individual's ability to maintain paid employment and the necessity for medical retirement and/or benefits payments. Return to work following prolonged illness has long been valued as a goal and an outcome measure of varied models of rehabilitation, including back schools, work hardening, work conditioning and pain management programmes. Age, gender, length of sickness time, psychological factors, and type and duration of rehabilitation programme, among others, have all been presented as predictors of outcome and continue to be debated in the literature. This article describes the initial outcomes of a return-to-work programme established specifically to address the development of chronicity following injury or illness in police officers. Early findings, that is, return-to-work rate, increases in lifting capacity and grip strength, appear positive. No correlation was found between length of time since diagnosis, age or number of sessions attended. The limitations of these findings are also discussed.
