From the perspective of formalism theory, this study aims to reveal that a research on literary texts does not only pay attention to textual facts existing in literary works, but also needs to pay attention to what exists outside the text. In the literary works, the element of defamiliarization holds that literary language is able to express facts of stories using unfamiliar languages. From the perspective of structuralism theory, this study aims to reveal that structuralism is conceptually a continuation of formalism which largely depends on language. Structuralism theory has a close relationship with linguistics, especially in analyzing the functions of the language used. The analysis of language function can help understanding language semiotics that views literature as a sign that then led to literary semiotics. Therefore, functioning to examine a phenomenon, the concept of semiotic structuralism emerged as a social fact.  Critical approach was deemed suitable to be used in this study because formalism theory and structuralism theory are part of a social construction and part of a discursive formation in the formation of subject and reality. As a result, it could be seen the position of formalism theory and structuralism theory in literary research of which raw material is language. The findings in this study are that the formalism theory in its development is dynamic and its language construction stimulates readers to respond. In principle, literary work is not autonomous because it contains author’s feelings and society’s mind. Literary research should exceed the boundaries of formalism and be able to create new vocabularies in writing novels. In the novel, there is intertextual polyvalence, which is a series and intensive dialogic linkages that are capable of giving birth to new novels. Another finding is that structuralism theory has a close relationship with linguistics, for example phonological elements in linguistics which can help literary theory in analyzing sound levels in oral literary works. This theory has also developed a study of poetry to the aesthetic level so that this study has shifted from its original aspects of verbal art only to all art and artistic aesthetics in the present time. This shift distinguishes the views between formalism and structuralism in relation to norms and values inherent in language.

This article identifies a body of work—films, literary texts, and theories of the aesthetic—that can help us reopen the question of what it means for an artwork to project a vision of classlessness. The article begins by focusing on early-twentieth-century proletarian modernism, in particular in the cinematic work of Sergey Eisenstein and in British literary works that repurposed Woolfian and Joycean styles during the later interwar years. Proletarian modernism, I argue, highlights an alternative route taken by modernist literature and art: unlike the late modernists feted in much recent scholarship, proletarian modernists aimed to retool modernism, opening up new and global political futures for it rather than anticipating its end. The article concludes by showing that the cultural genealogy of proletarian modernism mapped out here doubles as a prehistory of contemporary aesthetic theory: it enables us to recognize the significant political and theoretical erasures that structure recent accounts of art's democratic potential.

This study presents a critical approach to the poetic aspects of Qassim Haddad’s texts (Oh coal, my master) in his rewritings of Van Gogh's life. The importance of the study lies in the new experience of the text as Qassim has provided a distinguished artistic style where he presented the biography of the Dutch artist based on the heterobiography logic. He explored the artist’s paintings which reflected his attitudes towards life and art and invested in the content of his massages. The attractiveness of this topic is the reason for conducting the study as the poet Qassim Hadadd was able to explore deeply Van Gogh's ideas and consequently presented to us a biography of an exceedingly beautiful poetic style that presented his reading of the paintings and messages. Furthermore, texts are written in an elegant poetic language and are rich in color interpretations. The study adopts the Artistic Analytical approach that analyzed the figurative expressions of colors that have poetic connotations different from their denotative meanings which led to appreciate the aesthetic aspects of such literary texts.

Defining the functional nature of English anthroponyms in literary texts for children is complicated philological problems as these language elements perform an essential role in creating the system of images of any literary work. The complex study of anthroponyms functioning in literary texts for children is rather important because it meets the requirements of a new scientific paradigm of literary onomastics. The purpose of the research is to describe a scientific assumption of the phenomenon of literary anthroponymy in general, and that of proper names and literary anthroponyms in particular, and describe their functional peculiarities in literary texts for children. Special attention is paid to anthroponyms and their stylistic expressive abilities, which originate from the time when ancient philosophers regarded proper names in terms of their semantics and purpose of use only. The rapid development of literary onomastics makes it possible to point out different kinds of onyms, anthroponyms, toponyms, and the names of characters in fiction. The key feature of literary anthponyms is their distinguishing stylistic possibilities. It is proved that the functional nature of anthroponyms lies in the fact that they operate in literary texts as vivid markers of the author’s intention, implementing definite ideological, esthetic, and cultural tasks. In a word, they update stylistic features (informative and emotive) at the textual level. Consequently, the wide use of stylistic expressive properties of anthroponyms in literary works led to the need to conceptualize their functional nature in literary texts for children.

The Malay and Minangkabau people are those who like to speech and act on literature. This can be seen through the existence of several genres of literary works from those ethnic, ranging from the form of saga, tale, and legend. Among them are Hang Tuah and Cindua Mato saga. Hang Tuah saga grew and developed in Malay society, while Cindua Mato saga grew and developed in Minangkabau society. Both sagasare interesting to be studied as an analytical study. First, Hang Tuah and Cindua Mato saga is a great literary work owned by both ethnic groups. As a masterpiece, they both have an appeal to be analyzed in many ways. Secondly, Hang Tuah and Cindua Mato figures by both ethnic communities have become a big myth. Hang Tuah became myth by the Malay community as a brave and loyal figure to the king. So did with the figure of Cindua Mato who became myth by Minangkabau society as a brave and loyal figure to the king. As with other literary works, Hang Tuah and Cindua Mato saga contains the aesthetic, moral, and cultural elements of their owners. It is as stated by Taum that oral literature has an aesthetic effect and moral context as well as a particular society culture. This research analyzed and examined the cultural similarities and differences (characters) in Hang Tuah and Cindua Mato saga. This study is expected to produce the same perception of both sagas. Likewise, the possibility of a kinship element exists between ethnic Malay and Minangkabau.

Abstract This paper tackles repetition in literary texts from a semantic, generic, and translatological perspective. It deals with repetition in Arabic texts as well as in Modern English poetry, and explains the problems that are likely to arise in translating repeated elements in English literary texts into Arabic. The theoretical framework rests on the supposition that a literary work in general, and poetry in particular must be examined as a total meaningful structure which entails the semantics and pragmatics of the text. In other words, repetition is a stylistic feature that involves a non-ordinary use of language, which does significantly shift the information content of the text. In translating literary works harbouring repetition from English into Arabic, significant problems usually emerge since what is considered stylistically and/or semantically marked in English might not be seen or conceived as such in Arabic. So, a translated text may miss important meaning elements intended by the English author. The effect is that the mental representation and understanding of the poem are drastically distorted. Moreover, this case applies to Arabic as well, for what is semantically and/or stylistically marked in Arabic repeated elements may lose its markedness in the English translation. The paper at hand addresses these issues providing several examples and suggesting some solutions.

This article discusses the importance of literary criticism in multiliteracy perspective. Literary work is an autonomous object. But it has close relationship with the various issues and cultural aspects that underlie the author’s life. Literary works are also dealing with readers with diverse cultural backgrounds. In the development of literary works, they encounter transformation, metamorphosis, or switch mode into film, theater performances, musicalization, comics, digitalization and so forth. Literary works undergo the process of reproduction of various, multilevel and intertext sign systems. The discourse construction in it is not independent, but interconnected with the various discourses beyond. Therefore, the interpretation and criticism of literary works is done with multiliteracy; multiperspective, multimodality, and multidisciplinary. From these points, the concept of literary criticism in multiliteracy perspective begins. Literary criticism is the culmination of the literary works appreciation. Literary criticism in multiliteracy perspective can produce comprehensive meaning because the message is not only seen from a single perspective but also involving various sign systems and other knowledge aspects.

Starting with the definition of style by K.A. Dolinin, the article proposes to reflect on the perspectives of an interdisciplinary approach to stylistic research, using primarily the achievements of psychology and philosophy, as the style of a literary work is the result of the subject’s choices, which in turn result from his/her individual way of thinking. The interdisciplinary approach will also allow for more effective aesthetic assessment of the work. The article analyses three literary texts based on memories: The childhood years of Bagrov-grandson, serving as a continuation of the Family Chronicle by S.T. Aksakov, The Life of Arsenyev by I.A. Bunin and Be Like Children by V.A. Sharov. On the example of language constructions forming the concept of MEMORY, the researcher shows the factors that influence the choice of language means that ultimately create the individual style of the author. The study proves that this choice is influenced by non-linguistic factors: the situational context, era, the author’s professional and personal experience and education, philosophicaland aesthetic ideas, and other important circumstances that guide the artist’s thinking. Genre rules and current tastes are also of importance. The study shows that the ratio of the number of language constructions regarding experience memory and information memory can characterize the individual style of a given author. It also proves that a broader interdisciplinary view of style allows to see more determinants of the aesthetic value of a work. Among them are: the harmonious structure of the text including its spatial and temporal organization, and the compliance with the broadly understood norm that involves not only the linguistic but also the mental layer of the text, as expressed by appropriately selected means.

Background: On the one hand, the literary works of A.G. Matoš were studied by Croatian scholars in the context of the philosophy and poetics of modernism. The authors of fundamental studies about A.G. Matoš are Dubravko Jelčić, Dubravka Oraić Tolić, Mladen Dorkin, Zlatko Posavac, Miljenko Majetić and Nada Iveljić. On the other hand, Ukrainian researchers Mykola Ilnytskyi, Solomiya Pavlychko, Oksana Melnyk, and Polish researcher Agnieszka Matusiak analyzed and studied M. Yatskiv's creative style in the context of the aesthetic canons of the modernism. The novelty of this article is in addressing the influence of E. Poe on the literary texts of the Ukrainian and Croatian modernists using the comparative approach. Purpose: This is the first attempt to analyze the influence of E. Poe on A. G. Matoš and M. Yatskiv. This article treats the actual and yet not studied question of a multilayer impact (composition, imagery set) of the American writer on the Croatian and Ukrainian modernist writers. Results: Romanticism writer Edgar Poe undoubtedly influenced Mykhailo Yatskiv and Antun Gustav Matoš, especially with his essay “The Philosophy of Composition”. In this essay the author demonstrates the principle of constructing the plot with the logic and the hidden mechanisms of imagery construction. But in the biography of the American writer we can find facts that poems such as “Nevermore”, “Ligeia” and others weren`t the result of logic, but they were yearning for his wife who passed away being very young. The author of this study found a numerous allusions on the essay “The Philosophy of Composition” by E. Poe, his images of a horror crow and a cat, as well as the images of dead beloved beautyis in many literary works of A.G. Matoš and M. Yatskiv. Croatian and Ukrainian symbolists also used E. Poe`s technique of the total effect. Mystery element is generalized in the literary texts of three authors in the images of the sphinx, which has several meanings. The most common meaning is the abstract definition of something mysterious that needs to be answered. Similarities between Matoš's and Yatskiv's imagery with American writer E. Poe prove, that Ukrainian and Croatian writers were inspired by the world art achievements, creatively transforming ideas that were contemporary both to the romanticism and modernism. Key words: Edgar Allan Poe, Antun Gustav Matoš, Mykhailo Yatskiv, modernism, romanticism, “The Philosophy of Composition”, art scenography.
