Abstract This paper examines the case of Ard Ayush [the commoner Ayush], a widely recognised national hero constructed in the socialist movement and an exemplar who survived the post-socialist rejection of socialist heroes and was reconstructed within the post-socialist democratic and nationalist movements. The paper’s title borrows the notion of a ‘national people’ from David Sneath and the notion of the ‘exemplar’ from Caroline Humphrey. Extending Sneath’s discussion of ard [commoner and/or people] and ard tümen [national people], this paper shows how the concept of ard that was constructed through the use of exemplars has become ard tümen. Then, extending Humphrey’s discussion of the moral influence of exemplars, this paper shows how some exemplars constructed during socialism helped the socialist government shape and govern a national people.

Yokozuna Hakuhō, a prominent Sumo wrestler, is a Mongolian-born Japanese national hero. However, he, as other Mongolian wrestlers, presents Sumo with tensions between worldviews, which are battled both within the hierarchical setting of the Sumo association, and in public opinion. Those concern questions of etiquette and ethical behavior, between what is understood the “real Japanese” spirit, and the Mongolian attitude. Moreover, the Mongolian attitude also coincided with modern tendencies and the culture of celebrities so that those tensions are also a case of a Japanese way of dealing with the external influences of globalization. Moreover, since both Japanese and Mongolian cosmos are “inclusive,” namely, tend toward the non-dual, the tensions are not resolved but rather create a cultural enclave of shifting assemblages yielding both new regulations and popular opinions. And while those tensions are negotiated, the common belief as to what constitutes true Japanese traits is also forged and inculcated.

Abstract: The purpose of this essay was to put the Scottish king and war hero, Robert the Bruce on trial based on the model of the Ted-Ed miniseries ‘History on Trial’. The overarching argument is explored through a dialogue between the prosecutor and defendant of Robert and centres on how Robert Bruce should be remembered; either a Scottish nobleman fueled by personal ambition or a good, strong-willed king who did what was best for his kingdom and people. Both sides present evidence surrounding Bruce’s dedication to his personal ambition to becoming king which included murder and is contrasted by the clemency he should to his rivals/enemies upon becoming king. This leads to a critical approach on the nature of Robert’s loyalty during the early period of Scottish War for Independence and his later uncompromising drive to see Scotland become independent. The nature of how Robert achieved independence is also brought under scrutiny with the suffering he brought to the English and Irish populations. Concluding remarks on Robert’s verdict express the difficult nature of how to accurately remember national heroes and in ensuring a balance between the good and bad sides of them.
