Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS), a comprehensive condition is universally described as a group of several causative factors or abnormalities directly linked with insulin resistance that obviously augment the threat mainly for coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus Type 2, some types of cancers and sleep disturbances, etc. MetS is a contemporary condition that covers a wide-ranging display of disorders with definite metabolic anomalies demonstrating at different times. Consequently, the threat of MetS remains epidemic. This review will potentially study significant factors such as central adiposity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia; increased inflammation, environmental factors, and genetic predisposition are involved in MetS development. Purpose: This review provides the available facts to validate the relationship between MetS and quality of life. Methods: A thorough exploration in many search engines such as PubMed, Medline, Science direct, EMBASE, and Google scholar was carried out to recognize qualified studies. Results: Almost all studies suggested that MetS is significantly associated with impair quality of life. Lifestyle intervention holds the early preference and such non-pharmacological therapy combines specific suggestion on diet and physical activity with behavioral strategies. For the individuals, where contributing factors are not sufficiently condensed with lifestyle changes, pharmacological treatment should be considered. Conclusion: Therefore, the current study reviews the outline of literature interrelated with the MetS’s characterization, epidemiological existence, pathological process, and management advance for all the risk factors encompassing metabolic disorder.

Introduction: The lifestyle of quilombola communities has changed due to extra community influence, thus affecting their environmental and behavioral factors related to the Metabolic Syndrome (MS). However, little is known about the influence of MS on the Quality of Life (QoL) of quilombola residents. Objective: We aimed to study the association between MS and QoL in quilombola communities in northern Tocantins, Brazil. Methods: The QoL of 147 adults from five quilombola communities from Tocantins was assessed using the WHOQOL-BREF instrument. Blood pressure, abdominal perimeter, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides and HDL-cholesterol were measured, and the presence of MS was defined as the alteration of at least three of these clinical aspects. The association of the clinical components and the SM presence with the Quality of Life was evaluated by Student’s t-test for independent samples. Results: We observed that in the total population, an altered abdominal perimeter had an inverse association with both the Physical (15.2 vs. 14.0, p=0.002) and General QoL domains (14.4 vs. 14.0, p=0.045), and MS was inversely associated with the Physical domain (14.9 vs. 14.0, p=0.030). When stratified by sex, the altered abdominal perimeters in men were inversely associated with the Physical (16.5 vs. 14.4, p<0.001), Environmental (14.0 vs. 12.6, p=0.020) and General domains (15.5 vs. 14.0, p<0.001). MS had an inverse association with the Physical (15.8 vs. 14.4, p=0.026) and General domains (14.8 vs. 14.0 p= 0.042) in men. In women there was no association between any risk factor studied and QoL domain. Conclusions: The status of MS was negatively associated with the quality of life of the male population, highlighting the abdominal perimeter, which influences the Physical and General domains of QoL, but in the female population the MS does not interfere in the perception of QoL. Understanding the relationship between chronic diseases and QoL in quilombola communities is necessary to reduce health inequalities in historically vulnerable communities.  


Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine-metabolic pathology among women at reproductive age. It has a multifactorial character, and its etiology has not yet been precisely explained. The pathogenesis of PCOS is related to metabolic issues such as hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance, and is also associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes and increased cardiovascular risk. Manifestations such as irregular menstruation, acne, hisurtism and androgenic alopecia are common in addition to the consequent psychological and quality of life impacts. Thus, knowing that the adoption of healthy habits have therapeutic impacts in the face of various signs and symptoms of PCOS, there is a need to analyze the influence of lifestyle on the prognosis of PCOS. The present study carried out its searches in the PUBMED database, using the descriptors "polycystic ovary syndrome", "life style" and "prognosis", using the Boolean operator "and". Inclusion criteria were used: articles written in Portuguese, English and Spanish, published in the last 5 years. 19 results were obtained, 5 of which were excluded, resulting in 14 articles chosen for theoretical reference. The influence of lifestyle on the prognosis of PCOS is notorious, especially in patients with overweight and obesity. Thus, healthy behaviors have the potential to improve pathological conditions and bad habits demonstrate that they can induce clinical manifestations of PCOS in predisposed people. Lifestyle changes, mainly associated with weight loss, show improvements in aspects such as insulin resistance, free testosterone, acne, hirsutism and reproductive function, reduced cardiovascular risk, in addition to positively influence to the psychic and quality of life in analyzed patients. Therapeutic strategies that combine lifestyle changes and drug interventions have been shown to be more effective, as well as strategies structered with the monitoring of professionals tend to increase adherence to treatment.

Introduction: Dementia is a cognitive decline with patients often exhibit behavioural and psychological symptoms, severely affecting the quality of life and placing a heavy burden on caregivers. Acupressure has reported benefits for dementia. This study aims to critically review the available evidence for its use as a non-pharmacological therapy. Methods: Systematic search of major research databases for human clinical trials using acupressure as an intervention for dementia patients was conducted. Results were synthesised for the effects of acupressure on various outcome measures of interest for dementia.Results: Twelve clinical trials (N=973), including eight randomised control studies, were included in this review. The study sample was predominantly institutionalised residents with moderate to severe dementia. Baihui (GV20), Shenmen (HT7), Fengchi (GB20), Neiguan (PC6), Sanyinjiao (SP6), and Yingtang (EX-HN3) were the most used acupoints for intervention. Acupressure techniques employed in these clinical trials vary greatly with no standardised approach. This review finds inconsistent evidence in the effectiveness of acupressure in reducing agitation and behavioural disturbances. However, the treatment appears to improve their ease of care and reduce physical stress. Affixing acupressure devices on selected acupoints can also potentially improve psychiatric pain, anxiety, and depression. Long-term (6 months) treatment can potentially improve the cognitive function, activities of daily living, and quality of life of patients with mild to moderate dementia. The effect of acupressure on sleep disturbances remains unclear. Conclusion: More high-quality research on acupressure is needed to fill the gaps in knowledge and inform better care for dementia patients in the future.

Lifestyle changes in diet and physical activity are necessary for managing metabolic syndrome. The aim of this longitudinal study was to examine temperamental and personality traits as moderators of lifestyle changes prompted by motivational intervention. The sample consisted of 50 patients aged 22–65years (M=45.26; SD=9.79) who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome and were undergoing treatment at the Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw. There were two measurements: an initial measurement and a second 15months after motivational counseling. Each patient completed the questionnaires: Formal Characteristics of Behavior – Temperament Inventory, NEO Five Factor Inventory, Inventory of Health Behavior, and Short Form Survey SF-36. Body Mass Index (BMI), Fat Mass, Fat-free Mass, Intracellular Water, and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) were also measured. Data were analyzed using dependent samples t-tests to detect the changes in consecutive measurements, the hierarchical regression analysis was used to investigate temperamental and personality traits as predictors of change, the cluster analysis was used to extract the subgroups of patients with distinct profiles of temperamental and personality traits, and the analysis of variance was used to analyze extracted profiles as potential moderators of change. Three subgroups were extracted using k-means clustering: patients with higher Neuroticism, Perseveration, and Emotional Reactivity; patients higher Extraversion, Briskness, Sensory Sensitivity, Endurance, Activity, and Conscientiousness; and patients with lower Perseveration. All patients improved significantly in terms of physical quality of life (QoL), health behaviors, BMI, BMR, and Fat-free Mass (p&lt;0.05). Regression analysis found that higher Sensory Sensitivity, lower Perseveration, and higher Agreeableness fostered positive change (p&lt;0.05). Patients with higher Neuroticism, Perseveration, and Emotional Reactivity also improved in terms of their Emotional Quality of Life and Health Practices, reaching parity with other patients, which was verified on the basis of statistically significant interaction (p&lt;0.05). The temperamental and personality trait profiles moderated the changes in health practices and emotional QoL. Motivational counseling was effective for patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome in general, but patients with higher Neuroticism, Perseveration, and Emotional Reactivity benefited even more, as they were in poorer psychological condition before the motivational intervention.

Abstract Values for insulin-mediated glucose disposal vary continuously throughout a population of apparently healthy individuals, with at least a sixfold variation between the most insulin sensitive and most insulin resistant of these individuals. The more insulin resistant a person, the more insulin must be secreted to prevent decompensation of glucose tolerance. Insulin resistance is not a disease, but a description of a physiologic state, and approximately one third of an apparently healthy population is sufficiently insulin resistant to be at increased risk to develop a cluster of abnormalities and related clinical syndromes. The primary value of the concept of insulin resistance is that it provides a conceptual framework with which to place a substantial number of apparently unrelated biological events into a pathophysiological construct. In contrast, the metabolic syndrome was introduced as a diagnostic category to identify individuals that satisfy three of five relatively arbitrarily chosen criteria to initiate lifestyle changes with the goal of decreasing risk of cardiovascular disease. Consequently, the value of the notion of the metabolic syndrome must be considered not in pathophysiologic terms, but as a pragmatic approach to obtain a better clinical outcome. In this review, an effort is made to critically evaluate the concept of the metabolic syndrome, the criteria chosen to identify individuals with the syndrome, and the clinical utility of making, or not making, a diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome.
