A natural and environment friendly refrigerant propylene and propane are proposed as the substitute of R22 in air conditioner. The experiments were respectively conducted on an existing enthalpy potential lab. Refrigerant charge was held at the constant superheat condition. It is founded that the cooling capacity of R1270 was 96% of R22 system while the R290 was 92% of R22 system, but the COP bother higher than the former system, the refrigerant charge of R1270 was reduced 56.8% of R22 while R290 was 58.4%. With the condensing temperature increased, the system’s cooling capacity is gradually reduced, the cooling capacity of R1270 and R290 are decreased faster than R22, this indicate that R1270 can improve the running performance of system and has more advantages than R290 as substitute for R22, if do some improvement to the original system, can obtain a better results.

The paper presents the investigation of a prototype cold accumulator using water–ice latent heat for the cold storage process. The concept of the cold accumulator was based on a 200-L-capacity cylindrical storage tank in which spherical capsules filled with water were placed. Beds of polypropylene capsules with diameters of 80 mm, 70 mm, and 60 mm were used in the tests. The cold accumulator operated with a water–air heat pump. Based on the test results, the following parameters were calculated: the cooling capacity, cooling power, energy efficiency of the cold storage, and energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the accumulator. The obtained measurement results were described with mathematical relationships (allowing for measurement error) using criterial numbers and the developed “Research Stand Factor Number” (RSFN) index. It has been found that, for the prototype cold accumulator under investigation, the maximum values of the cooling capacity (17 kWh or 85.3 kWh per cubic meter of the accumulator), energy efficiency (0.99), and EER (4.8) occur for an RSFN of 144·10−4. The optimal conditions for the operation of the prototype cold accumulator were the closest to laboratory tests conducted for a bed with capsules with a diameter of 70 mm and a mass flow of the water–glycol mixture flowing between the accumulator and the heat pump of 0.084 kg/s. During the tests, no significant problems with the operation of the prototype cold accumulator were found.

A stepped capillary tube consisting of two serially connected capillary tubes with different diameters is invented to replace the conventional expansion device. The mass flow rate of refrigerant R410A in stepped capillary tubes with different size were tested. The model of stepped capillary tube is proposed, and its numerical algorithm for tube length and mass flow rate is developed. The experimental results show that the performance comparing between stepped capillary tube system and capillary tube assembly system, the cooling capacity is reduced by 0.3%, the energy efficiency ratio (EER) is equal to each other, the heating capacity is increased by 0.3%, the coefficient of performance (COP) is decreased by 0.3%. That is to say, the performance index of the two kinds of throttle mechanism is almost identical. It indicates that the stepped capillary tube can replace the capillary tube assembly in the R410A heat pump type air conditioner absolutely. The model is validated with experimental data, and the results show that the model can be used for sizing and rating stepped capillary tube.

An experimental setup is designed and built to study the operation characteristics of the air-cooled heat pump system for small residential in this paper. Based on the experimental setup, the characteristics of the energy efficiency ratio(EER) and cooling capacity have been researched when the outlet temperature of cooling water and outdoor environment temperature change. The experimental data demonstrate that the cooling capacity and EER of the system increases with increasing outlet cooling water temperatures and decreases with increasing outdoor environment temperatures. In addition, the correlation of the system EER is calculated by using the least square method based on the experimental data.

Performance test-bed of heat pump unit in central air-conditioner needs the intelligent and multifunctional software. So the monitoring software is designed with a good human-machine interactive interface, based on Visual C# development platform. The software can dynamically configure channels and measurement points to improve the defects of fixed channels for all measuring points in the traditional monitoring systems, which enhanced the flexibility and reliability of system. In order to increase the data accuracy, the improved digital filter algorithm was adopted. In addition, multi-threading mechanism was used to achieve serial communication and data processing, which meets the requirements of monitoring program for multi-tasking and real-time. The results show that monitoring software is powerful, easy to operate, reliable, high fault-tolerant and good user-friendly. It is suitable for using in other monitoring systems.
