While the hospitality industry in the Kenyan Coast has adopted Information and Communication Technology (ICT), application of the same is limited to internal operations and control. The industry’s e-business adoption lags behind similar industries such as tours and travel. Earlier research in e-business adoption does not suggest intervention for improvement of Small and Medium Enterprises’ (SMEs) status and lacks focus on any specific industries. The aim of this chapter is to address this gap by analyzing the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers & Caterers’ (KAHC) e-business readiness using a three-interrelated-level framework; namely, firm level, market and industry, and institutional and regulatory levels. This chapter presents results of an ongoing project that we are currently working on, related to one of the authors’ graduate degree research program that began in 2008. In this research, we adopt a survey approach that is supplemented by case studies of other countries’ implementations from literature. Findings show that the hospitality industry at the Kenyan coast is not ready for e-business adoption and we develop a framework to help facilitate readiness. The findings imply that as a competitive strategy, establishments which have been competitors need to become collaborators; and KAHC and its membership need to adopt e-business to not only remain competitive, but also to survive. The findings are beneficial to KAHC and the Kenyan government in evaluating the status of e-business readiness as well as adoption in similar industries. Other developing countries can also adopt the framework.

Purpose:  The purpose of the study was to establish the effect of determinants of access to microcredit on financial performance of retailing SMEs in Wajir County, Kenya.Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The target population comprised of all the 5000 retailing small and medium enterprises in Wajir County where the units of analysis were the SME owners. The study used stratified random sampling and simple random sampling technique to come up with the sample. The target population was stratified into 6 strata (the 6 sub-counties in Wajir County). Further, random sampling was used to select 146 SMEs from each sub-county. The study used primary data which was largely quantitative and descriptive in nature. The questionnaires were self-administered with the help of two research assistants. The data analysis was undertaken using SPSS Version 20 where the statistics generated included descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Results: The study findings revealed that savings, meeting the eligibility criterion, loan structuring and some socio economic characteristics positively and significantly affected the financial performance of SMEs in Wajir County.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: the study recommended that SMEs should take the initiative to increase the amount they saved so that they could increase their borrowing capacity. The study also recommended that SME owners needed to take the initiative of ensuring that they were all the time able to meet the necessary requirements needed for obtaining loans especially their documentation, business and repayment plans and aim at ensuring that they acquired the necessary collateral. It was further recommended that MFIs needed to ensure that the loan structure presented to SMEs were favorable. The study also recommended that it was necessary for SMEs to expand/grow their asset base so as to increase the ability to repay the loans. There is a conceptual problem in the adequate application of internal audit and internal control in the real business of the marketing environment. Although both of these managerial tools are theoretically defined, they are practically interchangeable in business. This limits their application. It is therefore necessary to focus on both concepts and make the theory and practice more precise or remove any overlaps. The aim of this paper is therefore a theoretical and practical comparison of internal audit and internal control concepts in the marketing environment. To fulfil this purpose and verify the hypotheses, this paper uses computer assisted self interviewing. The research was conducted in Q1 2021 with a sample of 3052 small and medium enterprises from the international environment of the EU 27. The research conclusions show a strong correlation of the theoretical perception of the terms of internal audit and internal control. At the same time, they show a weak correlation with the audit and control tools used in practice. They also define audit as planned independent assurance (soft consultation) and control as operational managerial assurance (hard comparison). This defines and clarifies scientific theories for managerial practice, thus enhancing and increasing the efficiency of internal audits and internal control in the business environment.

Contribution of MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) in the economy is significant enough. It indicates the importance of support for MSMEs to maintain and double the capacity their businesses. In conducting its business, 76% of respondents already use the Internet (e-business) but still not optimally because the average does not have a website as a forum for the promotion and selling activity. Total mean score of 4.2 in adoption of innovations indicates that it has been realized, done, evaluated and adopted as a whole. Therefore, it is necessary to perform an assessment on what extent of e-business application that has been done by reviewing the readiness of MSME industries and the aspects of the utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) by MSMEs particularly of those located in Jabodetabek. The purpose of this assessment is to get an overview, status and position of the support of implementation of e-business owned and how the adoption process of e-business application can run in Jabodetabek. With the assessment of e-business technology use, we expect the planning, implementation and control of programs as well as the implementation of e-business can be conducted more directedly and controlled.

Notwithstanding the emergent indications and fears about the effect of cybercrime, only a few speculative studies have explored the topic to complement those published by consultancy firms, cybersecurity companies, and private institutions. The review of all these studies shows that there is no consensus on how to delineate and measure cybercrime or its effect on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises. Against this background, this research paper had four objectives namely to: determine the effect of Cybercrime on Small and Medium Scale Businesses; identify the real cost of Cybercrime to Ghana SMEs; identify the reasons for the increase of cybercrimes in Ghana SMEs and; identify the causes of cybercrime in Ghana SMEs. A cross-sectional study is used to assess the burden of cost or IT needs of a population and are particularly useful in informing the planning and allocation of IT resources. The study consists of forty-nine (49) participants. The target population is small and medium enterprises in Ghana. Simple random sampling was used to recruit and select the study respondents. As the name implies, simple random sampling means that, in this case, small and medium enterprises in Ghana will be chosen entirely by chance, and each of these enterprises in Ghana has an equal chance or probability of being selected. Furthermore, eight small and medium enterprises in Ghana were involved. And these SMEs include businesses that buy and sell, transportation companies, etc. The findings of the research confirmed the assumptions put forward since there were statistically significant variations in the proportion of people who participated in cybercrime activities based on their age and the size of the business in which they worked.
