This article focuses predominantly on analysing the role of the northern area of Poland in the security system of Poland following World War II. The separation of the area from the national defence system of the country resulted from the specific nature of incorporating a part of the former Eastern Prussia into Poland and its neighbourhood with the Soviet Union. In view of the Polish national administration, the area included the Olsztyn Voivodeship and part of the Gdansk Voivodeship east of the Vistula and the Bialystok Voivodeship bordering the Kaliningrad District. According to the military division of the country, the area was part of the Warsaw Military District and the Pomeranian Military District. The time frame was determined by the establishment and ultimate designation of the northern border in 1957, when Poland and the Soviet Union signed a treaty regarding the marking of the existing national border between Poland and the Soviet Union adhering to the Baltic Sea (5 March 1957).The article examines the political and military circumstances in which Poland’s northern border was determined, it assesses it operationally and determines the status of the northern area of Poland in the country’s security system. The subject has not been widely examined and literary sources are scarce. Most of the materials can be found in the Central Military Archives and the Border Guard Archives in Kętrzyn.Northern Poland has always been a key operational area, yet its defensive weakness, in the former political arrangement, was greatly affected by the proximity of the Soviet Union. The problem of defending Poland’s northern border was a dilemma that was increasingly growing in difficulty over the years. There were a large number of factors causing it, and it was in the sphere of defence that they manifested themselves most visibly.

Two are the facts to which A Satyr Against Mankind (1675) owes its critical interest and fame. To begin with, as the first example of its kind written in English, its numerous literary sources can be traced back from the Classics to the contemporary works of the XVII century intellectuals. Secondly, considering Rochester's own polemic character and personality, there is something in its satirical voice that seems to be revealing but the poet's own frustration and rejection of his destiny as a man. Nevertheless, Rochester's mastery does not lie in the originality of the subject matter but in the N vay he handles his materials. Thus it is possible to question the controversial issue of biographical evidence in this poem by analysing the structure of its content and the way thought is organised under the rhetoric principies in vigour at the time.

The article explores the patterns of form making in architecture through the prism of archetypes and archetypal images. Ancient civilizations’ spatial form making is considered in the context of the general system of archetypal images that are the source of meaning formation in an artificial environment. The main advantage of the article is the delimitation of the architectural archetype and the archetypal images in architecture. In this context, the article studies various options for spatial archetypes of the urban environment at the macro and micro levels. The House and the Temple are considered as the fundamental archetypes in architecture. The authors determine the role and place of form making in the contemporary cultural situation. However, there is noted that the spatial archetypes are a broader concept than just the application field of the architectural archetype. Thus, the article reveals the hierarchy of this cultural phenomenon in the spatial arts. As is often the case in the field of art, it is difficult to draw a clear line between the archetypal and spatial images. The tower, being a perfect example of the architectural archetype, is simultaneously considered by us as a spatial archetype. The article notes the possibility of a new archetypal image emergence in modern Russia, the general cultural situation of which can be characterized as extremely volatile and ambiguous. Does this suggest creating other archetypal images or just abandoning the traditional ones replacing them with pro-Western patterns? In any case, there is a possibility of creating new models and images that determine the emergence and development of a new paradigm in the period of global transformations. When creating a new image in culture and art, the archetypes of artistic form making, as well as in its traditional version, leave their imprint on the appearance of the material and spatial environment. The emergence of a new dominant image in the space of Russian architecture and environmental design is determined not only by its creative potential, but also by economic and political reasons, as, for example, in the case of creating a comfortable environment of buildings’ yards. Meanwhile, the yards in Russian culture, in our opinion, can claim the status of an archetype. We can assume that everyone will remain keeping some ideal space of their own interpretation, associated with their childhood memories, and that is why it is so important for us to preserve the paternal house with its adjacent territory for gaining some psychological comfort. The House and the Temple in this context are almost equal.

Introduction. The article examines intra-family relations in Bashkir society in the mid-19th to early 20th centuries. Goals. The work aims at outlining the characteristics and new phenomena in Bashkir intra-family relations during the period under consideration. Materials and Methods. The main sources are archival documentary materials and published sources. The analysis of the source material, the assessment of events and phenomena were implemented through the principles of historicism, objectivity and scientific nature. The study employs such methods as comparative historical, problem-chronological, retrospective, logical ones, etc. Results. On the basis of unique sources, such as archival documents, published sources, works by famous Russian scientists, public figures and local historians, the paper provides insight into the family life of Bashkirs in this period — with due account of turning events in Russia’s social life and its actual phenomena. The latter initiated certain changes in this sphere and had a serious impact on intra-family relations, positions of family members. That especially affected the status of women which has also been highlighted in published scientific and local history works. Changes took place in the woman herself, in her self-awareness and behavior, radically different from the established norms. This is evidenced by the increased number of cases when women turned to the Orenburg Mohammedan Spiritual Association with requests for divorce, permission for a new marriage, with complaints against their husbands, as well as by the emergence of women’s societies which became first experience of their self-organization outside homes and that of social life. However, family was still dominated by man, and other members remained as humiliated and dependent. All this attests to the strength of traditional intra-family relations. Conclusions. During the period under review, Bashkir intra-family relations remained virtually unchanged. Nonetheless, the events that took place in the early 20th century in Russia’s social life resulted in that positions of family and its members became noticeably complicated and unstable. The position of woman in family was undergoing serious changes as well: it became different, like the traditional Bashkir society itself.

During the last two decades a spate of publications forcefully brought to our attention the importance of the Roman house in the socio-political life of the élite in the late Republic and early Imperial period, both in Rome and in “provincial” towns like Pompeii, the metropolitan center of power setting the patterns for the lifestyle of local grandees. The focus is on the rôle of architecture in shaping the spatial, and thereby social, articulation of the domus. Literary sources concerning Roman domestic life and known for a long time are scrutinized for the light they might shed on the archaeological evidence, especially on the functions of rooms and other parts of the house. Roman wall-painting also attracts fresh attention in this context. The main focus in recent studies is on its synchronic formal variety, allowing painters, or perhaps rather their commissioners, to underline and at the same time refine the hierarchical organisation of space inherent in the architectural design.
