This study aims to estimate the total phenolics, flavonoids and tannins contents then to investigate both in vitro antioxidant capacity models of aqueous extract (AqE) from the stems of Pituranthos scoparius, growing in Algeria. Total polyphenol contents were determined using Folin Ciocalteu's reagent; flavonoids were quantified employing the AlCl3 and method tannins using haemoglobin precipitation test. The in vitro antioxidant property was assessed by DPPH-scavenging radical and lipid peroxidation assays. The results revealed that aqueous extract presented a high total phenolic and tannins contents with values of 150.89 ± 0.68 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/g and 71.24 ± 0.09 mg TAE (tannic acid equivalent)/g dry extract, respectively. This extract show an essential effect toward DPPH-scavenging assay and lipid peroxidation inhibition with 96.19 ± 0.00 µg/mL, 91.53 ± 0.98 %, respectively. This study indicates that the aqueous extract from Pituranthos sciparius has potent antioxidant effects and may prove to be of latent health benefit as well as supplementary sources for natural antioxidants drugs. Honey is a well-known natural sweetener and is rich in natural antioxidants that prevent the occurrence of oxidative stress, which is responsible for many human diseases. Some of the biochemical compounds in honey that contribute to this property are vitamins and phenolic compounds such as phenolic acids and flavonoids. However, the extent to which these molecules contribute towards the antioxidant capacity in vitro is inconsistently reported, especially with the different analytical methods used, as well as other extrinsic factors that influence these molecules’ availability. Therefore, by reviewing recently published works correlating the vitamin, total phenolic, and flavonoid content in honey with its antioxidant activities in vitro, this paper will establish a relationship between these parameters. Based on the literature, vitamins do not contribute to honey’s antioxidant capacity; however, the content of phenolic acids and flavonoids has an impact on honey’s antioxidant activity.

Crataegusfruit is one of most important fruits in Tunisian flora. Some fruits of this genus are edible. This study was undertaken in order to examine the benefits of these fruits in human health and their composition of antioxidants including total polyphenol, flavonoids, proanthocyanidins content, and total anthocyanins. The antioxidative properties of the ultrasonic methanolic extract were assessed by different in vitro methods such as the FRAP, DPPH, andβ-carotene/linoleic acid assay. We concluded that peel fraction of red fruits possessed relatively high antioxidant activity and might be a rich source of natural antioxidants in comparison with the pulp and seed fruit extract. The results also showed that hawthorn yellow fruit presents lower amounts of phenolic content, absence of anthocyanins, and less antioxidant capacity. Most of peel and seed fractions were stronger than the pulp fractions in antioxidant activity based on their DPPH IC50, FRAP values, and results ofβ-carotene/linoleic acid. The total phenolic compounds contents were also highly correlated with the DPPH method and the FRAP assay.

Reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen species (RNS) are produced in all cells and play important roles in physiology. The loss of the redox balance, either by an increase of oxidant molecules ROS and RNS or by decreased antioxidant system activities cause a state of oxidative stress. Several studies are going on worldwide directed towards finding natural antioxidants of plant origin. Plants containing phenolic compounds have been reported to possess strong antioxidant activity. The objective of this study is to evaluate total polyphenols and flavonoids contents (TPC and TFC) as well as examine the in vitro antioxidative properties from aqueous extract of Ammoides atlantica (AqE). TPC was estimated utilizing Folin-Ciocalteu's reagent. TFC was evaluated utilizing the aluminum chloride method. The antioxidant properties were evaluated using metal chelating and cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assays. Indeed, results showed that the AqE is rich in polyphenols (141.74±0.44 µg gallic acid equivalents/ mg of dry weight), and flavonoids (61.87±6.7 µg quercetin equivalent/ mg dry weight). These phytochemical compounds possess significant antioxidant activities. The results showed that AqE exhibited a good Metal chelating activity with an IC50 of 36.57±4.73 µg/ mL. CUPRAC assay showed that AqE extract exhibited high cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity with an A0.5 of 8.58±0.13 µg/mL. These findings provide evidence that AqE of Ammoides atlantica is a potential source of antioxidant which have many benefits towards human health. Fruit peels are increasingly being used as functional foods nowadays. Peelings of twelve varieties of Persea americana fruits consumed in Cameroon were investigated for their phenolic compounds (polyphenols and flavonoids) using three solvents systems, water, ethanol: water (50 : 50 v / v ), and ethanol, and antioxidant activity using total antioxidant capacity (TAC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging methods. Total polyphenol, flavonoids, and antioxidant potential of the peels significantly varied with P. americana variety and also with the extraction solvents in the order ethanol > ethanol: water > water. Total phenolic content varied from 2407 (Fuerte florid) to 673 (Semil) mg GAE/g DM, respectively, while flavonoids varied from 986 to 119 mg QE/g DM for Fuerte florid and Hickson varieties, respectively. TAC, respectively, varied between 132.87 and 126.85 mg AAE/g DM with Hass and Semil varieties, respectively. The highest DPPH scavenging capacity was recorded for the ethanolic extract with Lula (86.33%) and the least for the aqueous extract with the Semil (30.11%) variety. With FRAP, the highest capacity was obtained with hydroethanolic extract of Fuerte florid (0.43 mg AAE/g DM) and the least for aqueous extract with the Semil (0.269 mg AAE/g DM) variety. In conclusion, varieties of avocado peels are a good source of antioxidants. Solvent extraction significantly affected the concentration of bioactive compounds but not the potency of the antioxidants. A weakly positive correlation but not significant between the quantity of polyphenol, flavonoid, and antioxidant capacity of avocado peelings was obtained in this study.

Berries of sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) are characterized by increasing popularity due to their presumable healtheffects. The aim of this study was to compare the antioxidant capacity and total polyphenolic content in the berries of six Hungarian grown sea buckthorn genotypes and characterize the genetic variability in this trait. The harvest time of sea buckthorn berries affects the antioxidant capacity and total phenolic contents in berries of three popular cultivars of German origin. Berries harvested in October had higher antioxidant capacity compared with those harvested one month later. The extent of the difference was genotype-specific. Our analysis revealed a nearly 3-fold difference between the lowest and highest antioxidant capacities of the 6 tested genotypes with ‘Leikora’ showing the highest ferric reducing antioxidant power and total phenolic content. The TEAC values ranged between 1.76 and 3.13 mmol Trolox/100g fresh weight with Pető 1 and ‘Frugana’ having the highest values. The results presented in this study demonstrated that Hippophae rhamnoides berries possess in vitro antioxidant activity strongly determined by genotype but also influenced by harvest time.

The study assessed the influence of varying cooking temperatures on the antioxidant properties of the aqueous extract of Piper guineense seeds. Different portions of the aqueous extract of P. guineense seeds were cooked at different temperatures which include 50 oC, 70 oC, and 90 oC for 10 minutes, while the remaining portion was allowed to stand for 10 minutes at room temperature of 29 oC and all were assessed for the evaluations of reducing power, radical scavenging capacities, and total phenolic contents. The results showed that there was a significant increase in the ferric reducing power at 90 oC, however, there was no significant difference between the raw and the cooked P. guineense seeds at 50 oC and 70 oC. In addition, the radical scavenging potential of the extract was highest at 70 oC, however, none of the cooked P. guineense seeds at the selected temperatures exhibited lower DPPH scavenging property. A similar trend was observed for the phenolic content of the extract with a significant reduction at 90 oC. The study suggests that cooking at 70 oC could enhance the antioxidant potentials of P. guineense seeds

Present study reports a comparative screening of three ecotypes of Ziziphora tenuior L., sampled from three region with different elevation in middle and northeastern Turkey, based on their essential oil composition, total phenolic content and antioxidant capacities. Z. tenuior ecotypes showed twenty compounds, representing 89.18-91.44% of the essential oil (EOs) identified by GC-MS. The major components of EOs in ecotypes were pulegone (37.23-49.12%), and followed by 1,8-Cineole (2.26-7.78%), limonene (4.20-5.44%), ?-Caryophyllene (3.88-5.11%) and thymol (2.68-4.11%), respectively. Ecotypes showed variable pulegone content and it was increased with elevation increase. The total phenolic contents varied among ecotypes ranged from 21.13 to 27.50 mg of gallic acid equivalent/g EOs. Antioxidant capacity was determined in vitro using DPPH radical-scavenging and FRAP (Ferric reducing power) assays and expressed as concentration of each extract required to inhibit radical by 50% (IC50 and EC50) values that ranged from 0.80 to 0.97 mg/ml in DPPH and 0.42 to 0.55 mg/ml in FRAP assays, respectively. Our results indicated that antioxidant capacity changed among ecotypes. Taking into account the essential oil content, it seems that to select ecotype was the most appropriate to obtain more pulegone for this plant from its wild habitat.

The antioxidant and antimycotic activities of the essential oils and extracts of two native PortugueseLavandulaspecies,L. stoechassubsp.luisieriandL. pedunculata, were evaluated byin vitroassays. The total phenolics and flavonoids content were also determined. The antioxidant potential was assessed through DPPH radical scavenging, inhibition of lipid peroxidation (ILP), and DNA protection assays. All samples displayed a high DPPH scavenging activity, some of them showing concentration dependence. The majority of the samples were also able to inhibit lipid peroxidation. A strong correlation was observed between the results of DPPH and ILP assays and the flavonoids content of the samples. In the DNA protection assay, all the extracts were able to preserve DNA integrity. The antimycotic activity was performed against twelve fungi belonging to Basidiomycota and Ascomycota Divisions.L. stoechassubsp.luisieriexhibited the broadest activity spectra.L. pedunculataextracts were active against five fungi.Cryptococcus neoformanswas the most sensitive, being inhibited by all the extracts. Our results led to the conclusion thatL. stoechassubsp.luisieriandL. pedunculatacan be useful as new sources of natural antioxidants and antimycotic agents, providing a possible valorization of the existing biodiversity and resources of Portuguese flora.

Scrophularia tenuipes is an Algerian-Tunisian endemic species, which has not been studied yet. Ethyl acetate (EA) and n-butanol (Bu) fractions obtained from Scrophularia tenuipes were investigated for their health benefit properties, in particular with respect to in vivo/in vitro anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, as well as their potential to inhibit key enzymes with impact in diabetes (α-glucosidase and α-amylase). The fractions had a distinct phytochemical composition, of which EA was richer in total phenolic compounds (225 mg GAE/g) and mostly composed of the phenylethanoid acetyl martynoside. Compared to EA, Bu had higher amounts of total flavonoids, and according to the result obtained from UHPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn analysis, harpagoside (iridoid) was its major phytochemical. EA fraction was quite promising with regard to the in vivo (at 200 mg/kg, po) anti-inflammatory effect (62% and 52% for carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and xylene-induced ear edema tests, respectively), while Bu fraction exhibited a stronger antioxidant capacity in all tests (IC50 = 68 µg/mL, IC50 = 18 µg/mL, IC50 = 18 µg/mL and A0.50 = 43 µg/mL for DPPH●, ABTS•+, O2•− scavenging assays and cupric-reducing antioxidant capacity method, respectively). Both fractions also showed a strong effect against α-amylase enzyme (IC50 = 8 µg/mL and 10 µg/mL for EA and Bu fraction, respectively).

Phytotherapy has known a great evolution all the world and some medicinal plants are important remedies of some diseases. Ammoides atlantica is one of the medicinal plants used in folk medicine. This study aims to estimate the total phenolics and flavonoids contents then to investigate both in vitro antioxidant activity models of aqueous extract (AqE) from Ammoides atlantica. Total polyphenol contents were determined using Folin Ciocalteu's reagent; flavonoids were quantified employing the AlCl3 Method. The in vitro antioxidant property was assessed by DPPH-scavenging radicals and lipid peroxidation assays. The results revealed that Ammoides atlantica aqueous extract presented a high total phenolic and flavonoid contents with values of 85.56±4.71 µg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/mg and 40.55±4.09 µg QE (quercitin equivalent)/mg dry extract, respectively. This extract shows a good DPPH radical scavenging and β-carotene bleaching activities with an IC50 of 107.48±5.9 µg/mL and 130.17±5.52 µg/mL, respectively. This study indicates that the aqueous extract from Ammoides atlantica has potent antioxidant effects and may prove to be of latent health benefit as well as supplementary sources for natural antioxidants drugs.
