The present work aimed to determine the phytochemical components and evaluate the in vitro anti-inflammatory and anti-mycobacterial effects of hydroethanolic extracts of Allium sativum L bulbs, Drypetes gossweileri S. MOORE stem-barks and Pentadiplandra brazzeana Baill roots against several resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The phytochemical screenings of extracts were carried out according the colorimetric and precipitation tests to reveal the presence of phytochemical compounds. The anti-inflammatory effects of extracts were evaluated using in vitro Bovine Serum Albumin denaturation and proteinase inhibitory action assays. The inhibitory parameters of hydro-ethanol extracts were evaluated by the microdilution method agaisnt Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The phytochemical screening of hydro-ethanol extracts revealed the presence of phenols, polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, cathechic tannins, triterpens, steroids, anthocyanins and leucoanthocyanins. The anti-inflammatory activity of hydro-ethanol extracts of D. gossweileri, P. brazzeana and A. sativum have shown the inhibitory concentrations 50 (IC50) values ranging from 356.70, 183.30 and 226.30 mg/mL for BSA denaturation and 31.92, 33.62 and 56.93 mg/mL for proteinase inhibitory action respectively. The hydroethanolic extracts of D. gossweileri, P. brazzeana and A. sativum exhibited moderate and weak anti-mycobacterial activities with the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranging from 312.5 to 2500 μg/mL. A. sativum hydro-ethanol extract has shown the highest anti-mycobacterial activity with MIC of 312.5 μg/mL against isoniazid resistant of M. tuberculosis and extremely resistant drug strain of M. tuberculosis. These results suggest that hydro-ethanol extracts of A. sativum, D. gossweileri and P. brazzeana are efficient against tuberculosis caused by multi-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains and are able to resorb the inflammation induced during infection. Belimbing wuluh merupakan tanaman jenis buah dan obat tradisional. Tanaman belimbing wuluh sudah sering dimanfaatkan masyarakat salah satunya untuk mengobati penyakit seperti batuk dan radang rektum. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menguji senyawa fitokimia, menganalisis kandungan total fenolik dan flavonoid, serta aktivitas antioksidan dan antiinflamasi secara in vitro pada ekstrak etanol daun belimbing wuluh. Metode yang dilakukan pada penelitian ini adalah ekstraksi daun belimbing wuluh, skrining fitokimia, perhitungan total fenol dan flavonoid, uji aktivitas antioksidan, dan uji aktivitas antiinflamasi. Senyawa fitokimia yang terkandung pada ekstrak etanol daun belimbing wuluh adalah saponin, tanin, steroid, flavonoid, dan alkaloid. Kandungan total fenolik dan flavonoid ekstrak etanol daun belimbing wuluh secara berturut-turut sebesar 39,03 dan 97,28 µg QE/mg. Ekstrak etanol daun belimbing wuluh memiliki aktivitas antioksidan yang tergolong sangat kuat, sementara aktivitas antiinflamasinya terutama ditunjukkan pada konsentrasi ekstrak 200 µg/ ml, memiliki nilai persen inhibisi hemolisis yang paling tinggi. Kesimpulannya, ekstrak etanol daun belimbing wuluh dapat menjadi salah satu sumber antioksidan dan antiinflamasi alami.Ethanol Extracts of Averrhoa Bilimbi Leaf Demonstrated Antioxidative and Anti-inflammatory ActivityAbstractAverrhoa bilimbi, a fruit-bearing plant, has been traditionally used for medicinal purposes such as treatment of cough and rectal inflammation. In this current work, ethanol extract of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf was analyzed, with regard to phytochemical composition, i.e. total phenolic, and flavonoid, antioxidant activity, and in vitro antiinflammation activity. Extraction of carambola leaves, phytochemical screening, total phenolic and flavonoid contens, assay of antioxidant activity, and assay of anti-inflammatory activity were done in this research. As a result, the leaf extract positively contained some phytochemical compounds, i.e. saponin, tannin, steroid, flavonoid, and alkaloid. Furthermore, total phenolic and flavonoid of the leaf extract was found at 39.03 and 97.28 µg QE/mg extract, respectively. Additionally, antioxidant activity of the leaf extract was classified as very strong, while its anti-inflammatory feature at extract concentration of 200 µg/ml exhibited the highest inhibition of hemolysis. In summary, the ability of Averrhoa bilimbi leaf ethanol extracts to act as antioxidative and anti-inflammatory agents was determined and this may open the use for natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents.

Oral hygiene is important to the generality of the human healthcare system. For this, the antifungal activities of the aqueous and ethanol extracts of four medicinal plants of Jatropha curcas (stem), Eucaluptus golbulus (leaves), Vernonia amygdalina (stem) and Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides (root) were carried out in vitro against three species of Candida associated with oral thrush namely C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis using the disc diffusion agar assay. The zones of inhibition varied with the test organisms as well as the extracts. The ethanolic extract of Jatropha curcas showed the highest zone of inhibition of 10.88 ± 0.22 mm against C. albicans while the least zone of inhibition (6.13 ± 0.13 mm) was exhibited by the ethanol extract of Z. zanthoxyloides on C. glabrata. The preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of tannin, saponin, alkaloids, flavonoids and reducing sugar in all plant samples. This study can be further used as a foundation for the screening of phytochemical constituents by pharmaceuticals for the control and eradication of oral thrush.

Anti-inflammatory effect of ethanol rhizome of turmeric was conducted toward white mouse which is induced the carrageenan solution (lambda carrageenan) 1 %, research was conducted by dividing the animals into 5 groups.Group A was given CMC 0,5%, group B was given Indometacin with dose 100 mg/kgBB, group C was given  ethanol rhizome extract of turmeric with dose 400 mg/kgBB, group D was given ethanol rhizome extract of turmeric with dose 500 mg/kgBB, group E was given ethanol rhizome extract of turmeric with dose 600 mg/kgBB. Result of phytochemical screening toward powder and ethanol extract of rhizome of turmeric shows that chemical compounds which are involved are alkaloids, flavonoids, and aetheric oil. In the other hand, result of phytochemical screening toward ethanol extract of turmeric’s rhizome are alkaloids,flavonoids,anthraquinones, glycosides. Result of anti-inflammatory test shows that there is the real difference among groups of mouse which were given CMC suspension (control), suspension of ethanol extracts of turmeric’s rhizome with dose 400 mg/kg BB, 500 mg/kg BB, 600 mg/kg BB (material test) and suspension of indomethacin with dose 100 mg/kg BB (positive comparison). Suspension of ethanol extract of turmeric’s rhizome with dose 600 mg/kg BB shows that anti-inflammatory capability is better than dose 400 mg/kg BB and 500 mg/kg BB, and suspension of ethanol extract of turmeric’s rhizome dose 600 mg/kg BB shows the anti-inflammatory effect which is not really different with suspension of indomethacin with dose 100 mg/kg BB, it is showed by  ANOVA statistic analysis among those comparisons toward indomethacin suspension as positive comparison.Keywords:Anti-inflammatory, Indomethacin, Turmeric Rhizome

Epidendrum coryophorum belongs to the Orchidaceae family. Traditional uses of some species for this genus include infusions of the leaves used for kidney problems, treat influenza, conjunctivitis, liver pain, relieve kidney symptoms, and hypoglycemic effect. This work's objective was to determine the phytochemical profile of the ethanolic extract of Epidendrum coryophorum leaves and to evaluate the potential anti-inflammatory activity in vitro of the extract employing the erythrocyte membrane stabilization method. The phytochemical screening carried out in this work suggested phenols, coumarins, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and sterols in the ethanolic extract of Epidendrum coryophorum leaves. Cardiotonic glycosides and carbohydrates were also found. The ethanolic extract's UV-Vis spectrum showed absorption maxima at 268 nm and 332 nm, which could correspond to flavonoids of the flavonoid classes, 3-OH substituted flavonols, or isoflavones. The quantitative determination of total phenols of the ethanolic extract was carried out using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The total phenolic content expressed as mg Gallic acid equivalent (G.A.E.) per gram of extract was found to be 19,96 mgGAE/g of Epidendrum coryophorum. The ethanolic extract of Epidendrum coryophorum leaves showed hemolysis inhibition values ​​of 18,19% at 1,0 mg/mL, 38,98% at 1,5 mg/mL and 40,94% at 2,5 mg/mL compared with aspirin (positive control) giving values ​​of 65,33% at 1,0 mg/mL, 72,26% at 1,5 mg/mL and 73,75% at 2,5 mg/mL. The values ​​obtained for inhibition of hemolysis with ethanolic extract, compared with the values ​​obtained with a pure anti-inflammatory, are significant and demonstrate anti-inflammatory activity in Epidendrum coryophorum. Sea cucumber body wall contains several naturally occurring bioactive components that possess health-promoting properties. Isostichopus badionotus from Yucatan, Mexico is heavily fished, but little is known about its bioactive constituents. We previously established that I. badionotus meal had potent anti-inflammatory properties in vivo. We have now screened some of its constituents for anti-inflammatory activity in vitro. Glycosaminoglycan and soluble protein preparations reduced 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced inflammatory responses in HaCaT cells while an ethanol extract had a limited effect. The primary glycosaminoglycan (fucosylated chondroitin sulfate; FCS) was purified and tested for anti-inflammatory activity in vivo. FCS modulated the expression of critical genes, including NF-ĸB, TNFα, iNOS, and COX-2, and attenuated inflammation and tissue damage caused by TPA in a mouse ear inflammation model. It also mitigated colonic colitis caused in mice by dextran sodium sulfate. FCS from I. badionotus of the Yucatan Peninsula thus had strong anti-inflammatory properties in vivo.

Inflammation is a fundamental process for defending against foreign antigens that involves various transcriptional regulatory processes as well as molecular signaling pathways. Despite its protective roles in the human body, the activation of inflammation may also convey various diseases including autoimmune disease and cancer. Sorbaria kirilowii is a plant originating from Asia, with no anti-inflammatory activity reported. In this paper, we discovered an anti-inflammatory effect of S. kirilowii ethanol extract (Sk-EE) both in vivo and in vitro. In vitro effects of Sk-EE were determined with lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, while ex vivo analysis was performed using peritoneal macrophages of thioglycollate (TG)-induced mice. Sk-EE significantly reduced the nitric oxide (NO) production of induced macrophages and inhibited the expression of inflammation-related cytokines and the activation of transcription factors. Moreover, treatment with Sk-EE also decreased the activation of proteins involved in nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling cascade; among them, Src was a prime target of Sk-EE. For in vivo assessment of the anti-inflammatory effect of Sk-EE, HCl/EtOH was given by the oral route to mice for gastritis induction. Sk-EE injection dose-dependently reduced the inflammatory lesion area of the stomach in gastritis-induced mice. Taking these results together, Sk-EE exerts its anti-inflammatory activity by regulating intracellular NF-κB signaling pathways and also shows an authentic effect on reducing gastric inflammation.
