Introduction: The study aims to evaluate the anti-hyperglycaemic effect of turmeric and the histological changes in the pancreas of adult Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: Forty adult Wistar rats were divided into four groups of [A-D] ten rats per group. Group A was normal control, group B was diabetic control, group C was treated with 300mg/kg weight of extract and group D was 500mg/kg body weight. All animals had access to food and water ad libitum.  Aqueous extract of turmeric was administered orally, once daily for 14 days. The rats were then anaesthetized with dichloromethane before sacrifice and sample collection. Pancreatic tissues were processed, stained using the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) method. Blood glucose estimation was determined using the glucose oxidase method. Results: The mean body weights of the rats across groups were not statistically significant. Similarly, blood glucose levels across groups revealed a progressive statistically significant increase from group A to D and from day one to day 17. Pairwise comparison of group A with B, C and D showed a statistically significant increase but a comparison of Group B with C and D were not significant. Discussion: There was progressive body weight increase of the rats from day one to the final day across all groups and reduction in the blood glucose levels of the animals treated with 300mg/kg and 500mg/kg body weights, after seven days of treatment, but these, progressively increased with time even with treatment. Carica papaya Linn. (Family: Caricaceae) is a perennial, herbaceous plant used traditionally among the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria for the treatment of various human and veterinary diseases including malaria, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, Jaundice, intestinal helminthiasis. Therefore, this study was designed to assess some of the effects of aqueous extract of C. papaya leaf on the liver of Streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic adult wistar rats. Experimental diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of 60 mg/kg STZ freshly dissolved in 0.1M Sodium Citrate at PH buffer at 4.5. Hyperglycemia was confirmed four days after injection by measuring the tail vein blood glucose level with an Accu-Check Sensor Comfort Glucometer (Roche, Mexico City). Only the animals with fasting blood glucose levels <200 mg/dl were considered diabetic. A total number of 48 adult wistar rats weighing between 100 -250 g of both sexes were used for this study. The rats were acclimatized to the experimental room having temperature of 25°C. Four groups were used for this study, group A served as the control which were fed with feeds and water ad libitum daily for six weeks and group B,C &D  were induced with 60 mg/kg of STZ after which were diagnosed of diabetes after 4 days of induction. Group B served as the diabetic control group and were fed with only feed and water ad libitum daily for six weeks whereas, group C and D were treated with different doses of C. papaya extract (1.5 and 3.0 mg/100 mL) as drinking water daily for six week and were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and the liver was removed and weighed before fixing in 10% formol saline for histological procedures. The result showed a significant decrease in body weight of diabetic -induced rats (P<0.05) while the body weights  increased significantly (P<0.05) in diabetic induced rats treated  with 1.5 and 3.0 g/100 mL of the aqueous extract of C. Papaya leaves when the initial and final weights of the rats were compared at the end of treatment. However, the liver weights increased significantly (P<0.05) in diabetic induced rats when compared with the diabetic rats treated with extract. The aqueous extract of C. papaya (1.5 and 3.0 g/100 mL) significantly decreased (P<0.05) blood glucose levels in diabetic treated rats. There was significant increase in serum biomarker enzymes: ALT, AST and ALP in diabetic rats (Group B) at P<0.05 when compared with control rats (Group A). Conversely, biomarker hepatic enzymes: ALT, AST and ALP decreased significantly (P<0.05) in diabetic rats treated with 1.5 and 3.0 g/100 mL aqueous extract of C. papaya leaves when compared with both Group A and Group B. The histological section of the liver of diabetic rats treated with 3.0 g/100 mL aqueous extract of C. papaya leaves showed improvement in hepatic histo-architecture as the extract ameliorated hepatic morphological disruption occasioned by induced diabetes in wistar rats. This study concluded that aqueous extract of C. papaya leaf ameliorated hepatic induced damage in the liver of Streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic adult wistar rats.

Abstract: Indonesian has various natural resources, second as largest after Brazil. One of the traditional medicine that has been used is watermelon. The part of watermelon that is known to be used as medicine is its white layer between the peel and the fruit, albedo. This study aimed to determine the effect of yellow watermelon albedo juice on blood glucose levels in wistar rats induced by alloxan. Subjects consisted of 18 male Wistar rats divided into 6 groups as follows: a negative control group, 3 groups of hyperglycemic rats induced with alloxan 120 mg/kg body weight; and 2 groups given only yellow watermelon albedo juice. Hyperglycemic rats were given yellow watermelon albedo with dose of 9 g/kg body weight and 4,5 g/kg body weight; positive control group was given novomix; and two other groups were given only yellow watermelon albedo juice. Blood glucose levels of each rat were evaluated on day 1, day 2, and day 3 before the treatment after 6 hours, 12 hours, 18 hours, 24 hours. The results showed that administration of yellow watermelon albedo juice 9 g/kg body weight of Wistar rats reduced the blood glucose level until 126.67 mg/dl, meanwhile the dose 4.5 g/kg body weight reduced the blood glucose level until 173.67 mg/dl. Conclusion: Administration of yellow watermelon albedo juice of 9 g/kg body weight and 4.5 g/kg body weight could reduce blood glucose levels of hyperglycemic Wistar rats induced by alloxan. Salah satu obat tradisional yang digunakan ialah buah semangka. Bagian dari semangka yang digunakan ialah lapisan yang berwarna putih yakni antara kulit dan daging buah semangka disebut albedo. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji pengaruh pemberian air perasan albedo semangka kuning terhadap kadar glukosa darah pada tikus wistar yang diinduksi aloksan. Subjek penelitian yaitu 18 ekor tikus Wistar jantan yang dibagi menjadi 6 kelompok, yaitu: kelompok kontrol negatif; 3 kelompok tikus Wistar hiperglikemik yang diinduksi aloksan dengan dosis 120 mg/kg BB; dan 2 kelompok tikus Wistar yang hanya diberikan albedo semangka kuning. Kelompok tikus yang hiperglikemik diberi albedo semangka kuning dengan dosis 9 g/kg BB dan 4,5 g/kg BB; kelompok kontrol positif diberikan novomix; dan 2 kelompok hanya diberikan albedo semangka kuning. Pemeriksaan kadar glukosa darah dari semua kelompok tikus Wistar dilakukan pada hari ke-1, hari ke-2, dan hari ke-3 pada jam ke 0, 6, 12, 18, dan 24. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan pemberian air perasan albedo semangka kuning dosis 9 g/kg BB dapat menurunkan kadar glukosa darah sebanyak 126,67 mg/dl sedangkan dosis 4,5 g/kg BB sebanyak 173,67 mg/dl. Simpulan: Air perasan albedo semangka kuning dengan dosis 9 g/kg BB dan 4,5 g/kg BB dapat menurunkan kadar glukosa darah tikus Wistar hiperglikemik yang diinduksi aloksan.Kata kunci: albedo semangka kuning, hipeglikemi, kadar glukosa darah

In recent years, many authors have investigated the possible antidiabetic effect of lactic acid bacteria. Lactobacillus species constitute a major part of the lactic acid bacteria group and have been found to exhibit beneficial effects on the development of diabetes and its complications. In the current study, we investigated the effects of newly characterised Bulgarian Lactobacillus strains, Lactobacillus brevis 15 and Lactobacillus plantarum 13, on blood glucose levels and body weight of rats fed a fructose-enriched diet. An experiment was conducted over a period of 8 weeks with 24 2-month-old Wistar rats randomly assigned to receive a standard diet (Con, control group), fructose-enriched diet (Fr group), standard diet with probiotics given twice a week (Pro group), and fructose-enriched diet with probiotics given twice a week (Pro+Fr group). At the end of the experimental period, a statistically significant increase in body weight was observed in all experimental groups (P<0.0001). The highest rise was seen in the fructose group (Fr, 169±19 g), followed by the Pro+Fr group (153±15 g), Pro group (149±13 g), and Con group (141±5 g). Moreover, the final blood glucose levels had risen significantly in the groups receiving fructose either without (Fr; P<0.0001) or with lactobacilli (Pro+Fr; P=0.002), while the rise was insignificant in the group of rats given probiotic supplementation only (Pro, P=0.071) and inexistent in the Con group (P=0.999). The highest elevation of blood glucose levels was observed in the Fr group (3.18 mmol/l), followed by the Pro+Fr group (2.00 mmol/l) whereas the Pro group showed the lowest levels (0.60 mmol/l). The results of our study suggest that the newly characterised Bulgarian Lactobacillus strains, L. brevis 15 and L. plantarum 13, could be considered as possible probiotics and might be able to prevent some metabolic disturbances.

Background: The extract of Corchorus olitorius has a reasonable content of vitamins A and C, calcium, iron and fibre, and therefore enjoys a universal application in the treatment of some disease conditions, even as the whole leaf is a very important component of food in so many cultures. Purpose: The study was designed to investigate the effect of Corchorus olitorius extracts on the testis of adult Wistar rats. Method: A total number of thirty two adult Wistar rats weighing between 180 and 200 grammes separated into four groups labeled A,B,C and D respectively were used for the study. Animals in group A which served as the control group were fed with the normal rat chow and water only. The group B rats were administered 100mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of Corchorus olitorus; while those in group C were administered 500mg/kg body weight of the extract. The group D rats received 1000mg/kg body weight of the extract. For a period of four weeks, the different experimental animal groups received the respective aforementioned treatments once daily, around nine- o’clock in the morning through oral intubation. At the end of the 28 day treatment, the animals were sacrificed and the testes harvested for histological, investigation, and through cardiac puncture, blood samples for some hormonal studies was also collected and investigated using standard laboratory standards. Results: Observations made showed that the extract produced no histological distortions, degenerative or defective effects on the testicular tissues. The present study aims to study the hypoglycemic effect of methanol extract of Andrographisechioides (MEAE) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic Wistar rats. Hyperglycemia was induced in rats by single intraperitoneal injection of STZ (55 mg/kg bodyweight). Three days after STZ induction, the hyperglycemic rats were treated with MEAE orally at the doses of 200, 500, and 800 mg/kg body weight daily for 21 days. Glibenclamide (1 mg/kg, orally) was used as reference drug. The fasting blood glucose levels were measured on each 7th day during the 21 days of treatment.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is metabolic disorder syndrome characterized by hyperglycemia due to deficiency of insulin secretion. Patients of diabetic patients increases each year, so it needs proper handling. Corn flour is a source of carbohydrates with a low glycemic index to help reduce the rise in blood sugar levels. In addition, supplementation with tempeh flour containing isoflavones act to protect cells from free radical thereby inhibiting damage cells. Fiber in tempeh affect blood glucose levels because it slows the absorption of glucose.Objective: To determine the effect supplementation of corn flour with tempeh flour on blood sugar levels in diabetes mellitus Wistar rats.Methods: The study was true experimental design with Pre-posttest control group design, samples were 20 male Wistar rats aged 2-3 months were then divided into 4 groups (T0, T1, T2, T3.) T0 was injected with alloxan as 30 mg / 150 grams of BB rats are subsequently treated with standard diet; T1 was dministered by standard diet 50% + 50% corn flour; T2 was administered by standard diet 50% + 30% + corn flour tempeh flour 20%; and T3 was administered by standard diet of corn flour 50% + 15% + 35% tempeh flour for 2 weeks. Blood glucose levels were measured with a glucose kit (GOD FS). Research data were analyzed by One Way ANOVA followed by Tukey's Post Hoc test p-value <0.05.Results: There were significant differences on blood sugar levels in all groups (p = 0.000): control group (only dietary standards), T1 (administered by standard diet 50% + corn flour 50%), T2 (administered by a standard diet 50% + cornstarch 30% tempeh flour + 20%) and T3 (administered by standard diet of corn flour 50% + 15% + 35% tempeh flour).Conclusion: corn flour with tempeh flour supplementation effect on decresing of blood sugar levels.

Background: Polyphenols, antioxidants, dietary fiber, and vitamin contained in the red dragon fruit peel. Red dragon fruit peel can be processed into marmalade. Red dragon fruit peel marmalade has the potential to be a functional food. Functional food is food that has a physiological function based on scientific studies.Objectives: The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of red dragon fruit peel marmalade on fasting blood glucose levels, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides levels of hypercholesterolemic Wistar rats.Methods: This study used a pre-&post-test control group design. Hypercholesterolemic male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into five groups. Hypercholesterolemia was induced by 1% cholesterol powder and 0.5% cholic acid for two weeks. All groups received standard chow. Samples were grouped into five groups: K-; K+; K1 (0.94 g/kg b.wt/day); K2 (1.41 g/kg b.wt/day); K3 (1.88 g/kg b.wt/day). The intervention was carried out for 28 days. GDP level was measured using the GOD-PAP. HDL, LDL, and triglyceride were analyzed with spectrophotometry. GDP, HDL, LDL, and triglyceride levels were measured twice before fasting. A paired t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the data.Results: The result showed that K-; K1; K2; K3 had a significant difference between groups before and after the intervention (p<0.05). Red dragon fruit peel Marmalade was able to reduce the levels of GDP, LDL, triglycerides, and increase HDL (p <0.05).Conclusion: Red dragon fruit peel marmalade reduced fasting blood glucose levels, LDL, triglyceride levels, and increased HDL levels of hypercholesterolemic Wistar rats.

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease with special characteristic which increased blood glucose level (hiperglicemic), its happens because of the abnormality of insulin secretion, insulin mechanisme or both of them. Belimbing wuluh and red guava extract can become alternative functional drink that contain rich of vitamin C to help controlling blood glucose level. The aimed of this study was to determined the effect of belimbing wuluh and red guava extract on blood glucose levels of Rattus novergicus strain Wistar diabetic model. This research was an true experimental study with a randomized post-test control group design. Twentyfour (24) male wistar strain rats weighing 200-250 grams, aged 2-3 months, were divided into 4 groups. The control group (K-) non-diabetic rats, the control group (K+) diabetic rats given standard diet, and the treatment group diabetic rats given standard diet and belimbing wuluh and red guava extract intervetion doses 10,7 ml/day (P1) and 21ml/day (P2). Measurement of pretest posttest fasting blood glucose levels was carried out using biolyzer. The data were analyzed by One Way Anova test. The results showed that there were significant differences in delta pretest and posttest fasting blood glucose levels between all groups. Blood glucose levels decreased at 55.6%. In conclusion, belimbing wuluh and red guava extract 21ml/day most effectively decreased fasting blood glucose levels in diabetic wistar rats moldel.   Keywords: belimbing wuluh, blood glucose level, diabetes mellitus, red guava

Abstract: Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is one of many herbal medicine that have been used worldwide to prevent and treat diabetes mellitus. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of garlic bulbs extract administration on elevated blood glucose levels on Wistar rats (R. norvegicus) induced by alloxan. The subject in this research were male Wistar rats with total of 15 samples divided into 5 groups, consisting of one negative control group, one positive control group who were induce by 130 mg/kgBW of alloxan that cause the Rats in conditions of hyperglycemic, and three groups of Rats were given okra extract with dose of 0.375 ml/100 gBW of rat, 0.75 ml/100 gBW of rat , and 1.5 ml/100 gBW of rat. Blood glucose levels was measured on day zero, day one and day two every thirty minutes on 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, and every six hours on 0, 6, 12, 18, and 24. Data from the measurement showed that 0.375 ml/100 gBW, 0.75 ml/100 gBW , and 1.5 ml/100 gBW of okra extract can’t reduce elevated blood glucose levels on Wistar rats.Keywords: Abelmoschus esculentus, okra, blood glucose levels, alloxan Abstrak: Buah Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) diyakini masyarakat sebagai salah satu tanaman obat yang mampu mencegah dan mengobati penyakit diabetes. Subjek penelitian berupa tikus Wistar berjumlah 15 ekor yang dibagi dalam 5 kelompok, terdiri atas satu kelompok kontrol negatif, satu kelompok kontrol positif yang diberi aloksan dengan dosis 130 mg/kgBB yang menyebabkan tikus Wistar dalam keadaan hiperglikemik yang kemudian diinsuksi insulin, dan tiga kelompok Tikus hiperglikemik diberi ekstrak buah okra dengan dosis 0,375 ml/100 gBB tikus, 0,75 ml/100 gBB tikus, dan 1,5 ml/100 gBB tikus. Data diperoleh dari pemeriksaan kadar glukosa darah pada semua kelompok tikus Wistar pada hari ke nol, pertama, dan kedua pada menit ke-0, 30, 60, 90, 120 dan jam ke-0, 6, 12, 18, dan 24. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak buah okra dengan dosis 0,375 ml/100 gBB tikus, 0,75 ml/100 gBB tikus, dan 1,5 ml/100 gBB tikus tidak mempunyai efek menurunkan kadar glukosa darah tikus Wistar. Hypoglycaemic potentials of aqueous root extract of Jatropha curcas (250 and 450 mg/kg body weight of rats) was investigated in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Effect of the extract on some haematological parameters was also investigated. Thirty albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) of mean weight 165.0 ± 2.50 g were randomly selected into normal and diabetic groups, each with six rats. Diabetic treated rats were placed on 14.2 mg/kg body weight glucophage (reference drug), 250 mg/kg and 450 mg/kg body weight of extract. All treatments were administered orally, once daily for fifteen days. The blood glucose levels were monitored and the haematological parameters like haemoglobin (Hgb), red blood cell (RBC) count, white blood cell (WBC) count, packed cell volume (PCV), percentage lymphocytes (LYM) and neutrophils (NEUT) were also analyzed. A significant (p<0.05) reduction in fasting Blood Glucose Levels (BGL) was observed in alloxan-induced diabetic rats treated with the extract. There was a significant (p<0.05) reduction in Hgb, PCV, RBC and WBC and its differentials of the diabetic untreated rats while administration of glucophage, 250 and 450 mg/kg body weight of the aqueous extract (Jc250 and Jc450) to diabetic rats significantly (p<0.05) increase all these parameters. These results suggested that the aqueous root extract of Jatropha curcas possesses hypoglycaemic activity and also improved the aberrations in the blood parameters of alloxan-induced diabetic rat.
