This study is concerned with Grade nine applied level students’ attitudes toward learning French. The following paper provides an in-depth case study of one group of 18 students from a Core French class in a South-Western Ontario inner city high school. Specifically students’ attitudes toward learning French through the Arts were examined. Guided by the tenets of Constructivism and Arts-based research, with the collaboration of the classroom teacher, French/Arts lesson plans were prepared through which I examined students’ motivation, attitudes, and enthusiasm to speak French whilst in the process of creating art. Students’ comments of learning French through Art were compared with their stories of past experiences within Core French programme. Grounded theory, an emerging theme design using qualitative methods of data collection and analysis was used to address the research concerns of this study. Observational data, questionnaires, and focus group interviews were conducted in order to triangulate the data collection for analysis. Students’ attitudes toward learning French via Arts-based activities found that students learned French in meaningful ways in the Arts (visual art, music, movement, and drama) and their enjoyment, motivation to learn, and spoken French in the classroom increased.

This book is an examination of what psychologists have discovered about how art works—what it does to us, how we experience art, how we react to it emotionally, how we judge it, and what we learn from it. The questions investigate include the following: What makes us call something art? Do we experience “real” emotions from the arts? Do aesthetic judgments have any objective truth value? Does learning to play music raise a child’s IQ? Is modern art something my kid could do? Is achieving greatness in an art form just a matter of hard work? Philosophers have grappled with these questions for centuries, and laypeople have often puzzled about them too and offered their own views. But now psychologists have begun to explore these questions empirically, and have made many fascinating discoveries using the methods of social science (interviews, experimentation, data collection, statistical analysis).

How can arts-based methodologies offer unique insights into contemporary migration and settlement experiences? Informed by qualitative research and a literature review which analyzes identity theory, social construction theory, and Canadian art organizations which support newcomer artists, this paper explores the potential for the intersection of the arts in immigration and settlement assessment. An exploratory investigation of the theory of art as linked to migration is illuminated by the experiences of a group of artists who have gone through a significant migratory experience and share their reflections on being artists in Canada. This paper argues that analyzing art created by immigrant artists offers insight into the contemporary Canadian immigration experience which quantitative data is unable to capture. Learning about the barriers which immigrant artists face through using arts-based research includes the subject in the research, thereby empowering and validating their lived experiences as valuable epistemologies and ontologies. Findings reveal the impact of acculturation on the identities of and opportunities available to immigrant artists in Canada. Key Words: Immigrant Art; Immigration and Toronto; Place-making; Acculturation; Hybridity; Identity

This paper explores the gap between teachers and students’ attitudes toward learning about domestic violence and gay/lesbian issues in the EFL classrooms in a Japanese university. Results showed that students had positive feelings toward learning about domestic violence and gay/lesbian issues, whereas college instructors were sometimes hesitant or disliked teaching about these issues. Students had an intellectual curiosity toward these issues and indicated the connection between learning about these issues and personal growth. On the other hand, instructors showed a lack of confidence or anxiety about discussing these issues in their classrooms.

DO YOUR STUDENTS LIKE MATHEmatics? Are they confident in their ability to do mathematics? All too often, we focus on ensuring that students develop mathematical content knowledge, paying little attention to such affective issues as students' attitudes toward mathematics and their beliefs about their abilities to do mathematics. Yet instruction affects students' attitudes toward, and beliefs about, mathematics; likewise students' attitudes influence mathematics instruction (McLeod 1992; Reyes 1980). Students should learn to value mathematics and become confident in their ability to do mathematics (NCTM 1989).
