The use of technology in our everyday lives has become a very common occurrence and it is integrated in all facets of our lives. This is even more apparent in the field of academia where the leaders of the future are very astute users of technology. Technology, with its fast pace of change, has led to numerous new methods of communication between the students themselves and between the students and their lecturers. Communication is not the same anymore. Educational institutions worldwide have been forced to make better use of technology in order to better interact with students and to improve on the level of education that they provide. Open and Distance Leaning (ODL) Institutions, by their very nature, need to ensure they stay on the forefront of developments in this field in order to provide a better learning environment and service to its students. This article aims to determine the level of acceptance of e-learning systems and technology in ODL institutions by faculty, as well as their inclination to support it.

Technology has provided many new methods of communicating and has changed the way in which students interact with each other. This had an impact on the way in which students of today interact with their learning environment as well. Educational institutions have started to make use of technology to better their interaction with students and the level of education that they provide. Open and Distance Leaning (ODL) institutions have made use of this technology to provide a better learning environment and service to the students. This article aims to determine the level of acceptance of e-learning systems and technology in ODL institutions.

E-Learning and distance education have become common choices for academic institutions. Based on advances in information technology systems, educational institutions have enabled the employment of e-learning systems as teaching courses and evaluation students. However, security issues related to e-learning systems have been raised by e-learning environment stakeholders which including faculty members, and students as well as data. In addition, e-learning opponents argue that incapability of e-learning environment to authenticate examination takers is one of the major challenges. E-assessment is an important element of LMS based e-courses, and student authentication is mostly realized as one of the major concerns for e-assessments. For this reason, the main challenge facing the security of e-assessment and the e-learning environment is how to authenticate students because unauthorized persons can access and manage information. In this work, we propose a novel security scheme that contributes in resolving this vital issue by introducing an efficient secure model for supervising online evaluation including e-assessment or e-exam. The scheme addresses this imperative problem by proposing a novel approach that incorporates available databases authentication technologies in conjunction with e-learning environments for controlling unethical behavior during e-learning evaluation. Moreover, the proposed scheme considers the continuous random authentication using students' information stored previously in the databases that guarantee identity and authentication. To validate our proposal, and evaluate its performances and effectiveness, extensive simulation work is conducted over e-learning platform similar to Desire to learn (D2L).

The article considers the issue of school digitalization as an important condition for improving the quality of education. The e-learning environment provides students with greater independence. A necessary condition for improving the education system is the creation of new teacher competencies necessary for the digital economy.

t In response to the global COVID-19 situation, quarantine measures have been implemented at the educational institutions around the world. This paper aims to determine the antecedent factors predicting the university students’ satisfaction with e-learning systems during the COVID-19 situation. We used structural equation modelling (SEM) and evaluated a conceptual model on the basis of a sample of university students from Finland (n = 131) and South Korea (n = 114). The SEM results showed that the COVID-19 related factors, i.e., COVID19 awareness, perceived challenges during COVID-19 and the educational institutions’ preparedness indirectly influence the satisfaction with e-learning systems. Moreover, we found a statistically significant moderating effect of course design quality, and instructor’s teaching style between the COVID-19 related factors and the satisfaction with e-learning systems. The implications of these results for the management of e‐learning systems are discussed.

This paper proposes cybersecurity features in the National e-Learning policy. Cybersecurity in the learning environment is becoming an issue that has been considered by the community.  DePAN 1.0 and DePAN 2.0 policies have not been carefully planned in any related security concerns. Amongst security domains in e-learning are authentication and accountability, access control, and non-repudiation issues. However, as the functionality of e-learning is expanding, information must be actively protected in this bigger context to avoid the loss of its confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Therefore, the existing policy and guidelines on e-learning have been studied thoroughly.  A very feasible study has been conducted on the existing literature and related works to e-learning and e-learning.  The security threats are also reviewed in this paper.  Based on the established e-Learning policy, therefore, the proposed security features are namely (CSF1) authentication and accountability, (CSF2) access control, (CSF3) protection of communication, and (CSF4) non-repudiation issues.  The findings from this study can be added to the implementation of e-learning in the future.

With the development of new technologies and their implementation in all areas of life, especially education, it is important to understand and accept all the new educational/technological concepts and their benefits. Through the concept of virtual learning environment, educational institutions can improve the quality of the learning process, reduce costs, but also improve communication between students and lecturers. The main objective of this paper is to present characteristics of two most used e-learning systems (Moodle and Blackboard) and provide results of the literature review on the differences of these two systems. Based on the results of literature review, a comparison between Moodle and Blackboard based on ISO 25010 framework is made. Through this secondary research, it was concluded that Moodle is the best solution for introducing a learning management system, but there are numerous opportunities for improving the education system at all levels.

This work investigates the integration of e-Learning systems and knowledge management technology to improve, capture, organize and deliver large amounts of knowledge. First, a model is proposed for the phases of knowledge management. The model is then enhanced with concepts and technology from e-Learning. The model is then used to illustrate real world scenarios that add increasing amounts of knowledge management to an e-Learning environment. The system, AMID promises high interactivity, efficiency and effectiveness of integration of knowledge management and e-learning. In addition, the developed system will enhance technical learning process.

Online collaborative learning systems have emerged as one of the most valuable aspects of e-learning systems. E-learning products that lack features for online collaboration among participants are deemed to be incomplete or sub-standard. Collaboration modules within an e-learning system consist of assets for group communication and work “spaces” and facilities. Activities within the collaborative framework of an e-learning system advances collaborative social interaction and the social construction of knowledge. Participants in an e-learning environment get involved in many activities which if not well coordinated could hamper collaboration instead of enhancing it. Therefore, the need to create measurable tools (models) that can coordinate these collaborative activities and provide up-to-date information or status of individual participant and group participants in collaborative activities within an e-learning environment has become inevitable. This work seeks to presents the design of activities management system model for online collaborative learning systems. The model contains some mathematical models for determining the level of involvements of a participant or groups in online classes (class attendance), discussions, project and polls. Their levels of participation are assigned weights and their aggregate value interpreted to give up-to-date status of their involvement in collaborative activities. The model is developed using WAMP tools.

Today, extremely fast developments take place in science and technology. These changes and developments reflect upon all systems and give rise to changes in some concepts and processes. Lifelong learning is one of the concepts affected by these changes. Educational institutions are considered to be responsible for spreading knowledge through e-learning, virtual university, Web-based education, distance education, which offer professional development. Therefore, distance education institutions have an important place in the education system of the future. However, innovations and developments have to be followed closely and operationally used for adaptation to the education system of the future within the distance education system as well. A scientific and realistic way of adapting to these developments is possible only if program development efforts are constant. Looking from this framework, teaching design, internationalization, entrepreneurship have given rise to differentiation in the program development of distance education. This is explored in this chapter.
